From Lulu Wang's grandaunt playing the lead's grandaunt in The Farewell, to Sean Wang's grandma playing the lead's grandma in Dìdi, to Maya Erskine's mother playing her character's mother in Pen15, to Donald Glover's mother playing his character's mother in Mr & Mrs Smith (2024), to Mawaan Rizwan's entire immediate family playing his character's family in Juice. Just creators of colour casting their relatives to play the family members of the leads in their shows ❤️❤️

caught a free screening of dìdi (弟弟), and i'm hoping it will be one of tumblr's movies du jour b/c i rly enjoyed it and am still chewing on it mentally. aside from it being so funny and being the first movie i've really seen to Capture what it was like for even normies to grow up on internet, it also conveyed this very timeless quintessentially teenage feeling where like. you feel like there's a smell on you. you want to be liked and you want to fit in so badly and you feel like people can SMELL it on you. and the smell is so intrinsically part of you, you will never get rid of it, it follows you around between friends and schools and phases of self. and everything you do to try and shake it just makes you smellier

The film is set in 2008 in the Bay Area, and is a funny, irreverent, and affecting ode to first-generation teenagers navigating the joy and chaos of adolescence as seen through the lens of a 13-year-old Taiwanese American boy, played by Izaac Wang.
