sokka trying to get katara to give up on her waterbending bc it could get her killed. and katara refuses to give up and continues to practice anyway. bc sokka and katara represent the survival of both the people and the culture. sokka had the safety of their people thrust upon him by his dad, while katara is the only one in their tribe that can carry the weight of their culture. both are heavy burdens, and they're struggling with their roles bc they're just two kids trying to rebuild in the wake of genocide. but they refuse to give up, bc that's what the story is about.
holding onto hope, regardless of what you face.
#so glad they focused on this aspect of katara and sokka's story instead of making them fight abt sexism#highlighting the unique ways in which they struggle to preserve the water tribe hits so much harder#ALSO it's a little unclear but if katara is the one who helped free aang from the iceberg#then katara's insistence on embracing her culture is what breaks the iceberg and frees aang (aka hope)#natla spoilers#avatar the last airbender#netflix atla#live action atla#katara#sokka#atla#natla#🪸

#art#ive literally just been treating this game as a library simuator#i walk from bookseller to bookseller opening up all of their books#vivecs sermons are either a highlight or the point at which i stop reading#ive been trying to convince the ordinators that imitation is the highest form of flattery but it hasnt been working#let me wear your helmets please theyre so funny..#posting morrowind in 2024 isnt a cry for help but youre not wrong to be concerned.#morrowind#almalexia#vivec#im going to explain the chitin armor give me a moment#so the bonewalker nerevar on the shrines is adorable and it was only after drawing it however many times that i realized#it looked relatively close to a modified chitin armor#and so i modified chitin armor a few times and this was probably the cutest result#i also know i drew almalexia relatively pristine and untouched by years and vivec not so much but my thought process was#vivecs role as if not a favorite then the most accessible divine or the most “hands on” in a manner of speaking#acting in ways visible to the general population or actions explicitly brought to their attention#like not that almalexia isnt doing anything she is#but the dissemination of information regarding that is very different etc etc etc#anyways to a certain extent a god is the face on a shrine or in art or upon a statue or carving#but vivecs presence is interwoven with the geography of vvardenfell especially and his actions and writings with pubished materials#and the arts and culture and customs etc etc etc#so to me the face of a god you know and feel a commonality with or a god that walks alongside you is a face you would recognize#and vivec is already otherworldly looking enough#the simple mark of the years on his skin in some way grounding him in reality felt more right#that and i think the ways in which he and almalexia care about outward appearance are slightly different- they prioritize different things#and the ways they present outward power and their embodiment of their respective attributes share some similarities as they both have that#important preoccupation with physical power and physical strength to a certain degree#oh my god nobody read this i am yapping so bad.#tes

A bit late to the trend (the curse of being a slow artist) but have some Polish and Sardinian Miku to celebrate the Brazilian (and from all over the world) Miku trend!
#my art#hatsune miku#miku hatsune#artists on tumblr#brazilian miku#mikus of the world#polish miku#sardinian miku#it was fun researching traditional outfits from my cultures#though they're super detailed and therefore hard to draw#one of the best trends of 2024 i fear#the original artist for Brazilian Miku is @ErinArtista on twitter!#it was super fun to see all the different Mikus people created from their cultures#the “niche”/everyday designs were definitely a highlight for me

In my Zeus bag today so I'm just gonna put it out there that exactly none of the great Ancient Greek warrior-heroes stayed loyal and faithful and completely monogamous and yet none of them have their greatness questioned nor do we question why they had the cultural prominence that they did and still do.
Jason, the brilliant leader of the Argo, got cold feet when it came to Medea - already put off by some of her magic and then exiled from his birthland because of her political ploys, he took Creusa to bed and fully intended on marrying her despite not properly dissolving things with Medea.
Theseus was a fierce warrior and an incredibly talented king but he had a horrible temper and was almost fatally weak to women. This is the man who got imprisoned in the Underworld for trying to get a friend laid, the man who started the whole Attic War because he couldn't keep his legs closed.
And we cannot at all forget Heracles for whom a not inconsiderable amount of his joy in life was loving people then losing the people around him that he loved. Wives, children, serving boys, mentors, Heracles had a list of lovers - male and female - long enough to rival some gods and even after completing his labours and coming down to the end of his life, he did not have one wife but three.
And y'know what, just because he's a cultural darling, I'll put Achilles up here too because that man was a Theseus type where he was fantastic at the thing he was born to do (that is, fight whereas Theseus' was to rule) but that was not enough to eclipse his horrid temper and his weakness to young pretty things. This is the man that killed two of Apollo's sons because they wouldn't let him hit - Tenes because he refused to let Achilles have his sister and Troilus who refused Achilles so vehemently that he ran into Apollo's temple to avoid him and still couldn't escape.
All four of these men are still celebrated as great heroes and men. All four of these men are given the dignity of nuance, of having their flaws treated as just that, flaws which enrich their character and can be used to discuss the wider cultural point of what truly makes a hero heroic. All four of these men still have their legacies respected.
Why can that same mindset not be applied to Zeus? Zeus, who was a warrior-king raised in seclusion apart from his family. Zeus who must have learned to embrace the violence of thunder for every time he cried as a babe, the Corybantes would bang their shields to hide the sound. Zeus learned to be great because being good would not see the universe's affairs in its order.
The wonderful thing about sympathy is that we never run out of it. There's no rule stopping us from being sympathetic to multiple plights at once, there's no law that necessitate things always exist on the good-evil binary. Yes, Zeus sentenced Prometheus to sufferation in Tartarus for what (to us) seems like a cruel reason. Prometheus only wanted to help humans! But when you think about Prometheus' actions from a king's perspective, the narrative is completely different: Prometheus stole divine knowledge and gifted it to humans after Zeus explicitly told him not to. And this was after Prometheus cheated all the gods out of a huge portion of wealth by having humans keep the best part of a sacrifice's meat while the gods must delight themselves with bones, fat and skin. Yes, Zeus gave Persephone away to Hades without consulting Demeter but what king consults a woman who is not his wife about the arrangement of his daughter's marriage to another king? Yes, Zeus breaks the marriage vows he set with Hera despite his love of her but what is the Master of Fate if not its staunchest slave?
The nuance is there. Even in his most bizarre actions, the nuance and logic and reason is there. The Ancient Greeks weren't a daft people, they worshipped Zeus as their primary god for a reason and they did not associate him with half the vices modern audiences take issue with. Zeus was a father, a visitor, a protector, a fair judge of character, a guide for the lost, the arbiter of revenge for those that had been wronged, a pillar of strength for those who needed it and a shield to protect those who made their home among the biting snakes. His children were reflections of him, extensions of his will who acted both as his mercy and as his retribution, his brothers and sisters deferred to him because he was wise as well as powerful. Zeus didn't become king by accident and it is a damn shame he does not get more respect.
#ginger rambles#ginger chats about greek myths#greek mythology#It's Zeus Apologist day actually#For the record Jason is my personal favourite of these guys#The argonauts are extremely underrated for literally no reason#And Jason's wit and sheer ability to adapt along with his piousness are traits that are so far away from what usually gets highlighted#with the typical Greek warrior-hero that I've just never stopped being captivated by him#Conversely I still do not understand what people see in Achilles#I respect him and his legacy I respect the importance of his tale and his cultural importance I promise I do#However I personally can't stand the guy LMAO#How do you get warned twice TWICE both by your mother and by Athena herself that going after Apollo's children is a bad idea#And still have the audacity to be mad and surprised when Apollo is gunning for Specifically You during the war you're bringing to His City#That You Specifically and Exclusively had a choice in avoiding#ACHILLES COULD'VE JUST SAID NO#I know that's not the point however so many other members of the Greek camp were simply casualties of Fate in every conceivable way man#Achilles looked at every terrible choice he could possibly make said “Well I'm gonna die anyway 🤷🏽” and proceeded to make the choice#so hard that he angered god#That's y'all's man right there#I left out Perseus because truthfully I don't actually know much about him#I haven't studied him even a fraction as much as I've studied some of the other big culture heroes and none of this is cited so i don't wan#to talk about stuff I don't know 100%#Anyway justice for Zeus fr#Gimme something give me literally anything other than the nonsense we usually get for him#This goes for Hera too btw#Both the king and queen of the skies are done TERRIBLY by wider greek myth audiences and it's genuinely disheartening to see#If y'all could make excuses for Achilles to forgive his flaws y'all can do it for them#They have a lot more to sympathise with I'll tell you that#(that is a completely biased statement; you are completely free and encouraged to enjoy whichever figures spark joy)#zeus

#with all the kate middleton conspiracies and detective work with photo analysis and media etc.#it just reminds me deeper how so much that occurred during 1D and especially with BG#could’ve only happened in the timeframe it happened in#when twitter and social media as a whole wasn’t as engaging and analytical as it is now#like there’s now such a need to uncover all the lies and curtains that hollywood and the industry pulls over on the GP#and with such a trend of exposing things and people in the industry#it would be like moth to a flame#so much shit could only be pulled off because of the vacuum of the time it was set in#imagine so many things that occurred during that era and the consistent weirdness of BG (especially with photos and videos)#it would’ve been torn to pieces by twitter internet sleuths in 2.5 seconds which would bring so much of the twitter GP obsessed with pop#culture to start threads and jump down rabbit holes etc.#it’s just always fascinating to see#especially when the buzzfeed article that occurred during BG that tried and failed to highlight all the inconsistencies#was like. the peak of coverage about it#on the other hand i’m sorta glad it did happen the way it did because imagine how much would be said about louis over that entire thing#and people would be ruthless#idk just some rambles

Since some of y’all still get it wrong, perhaps you need to hear it from the queen herself:

Am I the only one disturbed by the fact that 99% of what I'm seeing on social media about the Andrew Tate situation is funney jokes about how pwned he got??
This is a man who has built a career on publicly dehumanising women and encouraging other men to abuse women. Has made repeated public comments blaming rape victims in general for what they endured.
And it's just been made widespread public knowledge that he has committed horrific acts of violence based on those beliefs.
And that other public figures visited the home where he was imprisoning women to commit those acts against them and may have participated in that violence.
I get how there would be SOME jokes about his hubris etc but the fact that they're almost the entire conversation right now is deeply, deeply disturbing to me.
#rape culture#abuse culture#Andrew Tate#current events#not to mention how few posts about the situation are trigger tagged#which i feel like really highlights that people aren't even thinking about the violence that occurred#thatdiabolicalfeminist#rape#human trafficking

Hen Begins timeline
"Ah, since the meltdown in '08, everybody's been cutting back.", says one of Hen's co-workers (2.09)
"Gina dragged me to that vampire movie." (2.09): New Moon was released on November 20, 2009 and remained in theaters until at least the end of March. Eclipse came out on June 30, 2010 and lasted on theaters until at least mid October.
"Senate votes 63 to 31 to repeal 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell.'" (6.06): Hen and Karen celebrate the repeal (December 2010) when they're already living together.
"I'm a Black lesbian that joined the fire department at 30" (4.03); "Last time I saw Clive was 1978 [...] I couldn't walk out on the father of my child." (5.09) -> Hen was born in 1978 or 1979, so it's likely she'd be 30 in 2009.
"After 13 years in the same firehouse, why would I know - what supplies we need?" (5.03)
“When I first entered this department, Captain Gerrard didn't even see me as a firefighter. And now, 12 years later," (6.01) -> this is a quote that doesn't quite fit, because it would put Hen starting out in '11, but it's not far off.
Circumstantial 'evidence': It's raining on every call and every time we can see the outside from the firehouse (and they make a point to note how 'rare' it is "it's nice in the sunroom when it's raining. Which is, like, once a decade now."). They don't imply or mention a 'significant' passage of time; we only see Hen meet up with Athena and her friends once ("Three of us we get together once a month, swap war stories."), no montages or timestamps or mention of holidays, and on the contrary, many scenes are connected in time:
Hen arrives during the day, there's a 'raining outside' transition shot, then they all arrive at the station after a call:
Next they're eating, a fade to black, and another transition (still raining, as we can see thanks to the window and the transition shot) this time to night and into the next 9-1-1 callers:
We follow the mudslide call, fade to black, another 'raining in LA' transition shot, and come back to Hen and Chim doing the dishes:
Next up, another transition shot showing a lightening sky with, you guessed it, more rain. From there we get Gerrard berating Hen (gif edited for length; also notice it's still raining!) followed by the 118 leaving on another call, without her. Jump to her dinner with Athena and friends:
The end of that dinner segues into Hen's speech, and then straight to the next call (limo accident). The end of that call fades to black. Lastly we get Hen arriving at the station the next day ('Yo, Wilson. Nice work yesterday') to find Gerrard gone:
After her talk with the Commander and then with Chim, they get called to another accident (and, poetically, it has stopped raining).
--
So we have a period of time from end of November 2009 to December 2010. In that time, Hen worked under Gerrard, and later made friends with Chim, and 'met-dated-moved in' with Karen. Which part of that lasted longer?
Next we have this:
"They're trying to recruit women now, you know?" + "8 women were recruited, and 3 of them make it through the academy" + "the mayor wants to say that female recruitment is up" "Since you've started working here, we've received numerous complaints. [...] It's not just complaints we're receiving. Your colleagues all have some pretty complimentary things to say about you. You've made quite an impression. [...] Why would we do that [fire Hen]? You're the future of the LAFD."
What makes sense to me, is that since the LAFD was making efforts to increase diversity they probably acted fast to oust Gerrard when the 118 started making noise, to avoid the possible bad publicity.
See what happened with Buck's lawsuit:
Bobby: You're gonna get a call tomorrow from the Chief; You're being reinstated to active duty. The brass didn't want the headache, they're afraid of the bad press. [3.05]
So, I would say Hen worked under Gerrard for a few shifts.
Thoughts? corrections?
I know that 911's timeline is hmm dot-on-Jeremy-Bearimy-coded, but this one actually made sense to me.
-
9-1-1 Episode Transcripts
#911#911 on abc#Tv: 911#long post#Btw this isn't meant to dismiss or diminish Hen's experience in any way; on the contrary#my intention is to highlight how what each of these characters did contributed to gradually change the 118#Eli made it easier for Chim to stay on and stay himself; Chim reached out to Tommy#(who after being saved by Chim unfrosted a bit) and to Hen.#Hen stood her ground openly against the toxic culture at the 118.#And so by the time Hen arrived and did that “more than a few” of her colleagues were open to listening to her and willing to act.#Then Bobby and Buck continued making the 118 a better place#Bobby gets a lot of credit for what he did (and that's nice!) but the change started years earlier#and that how it often happens isn't it?

And she was rewarded by the narrative for doing so!!!#And now she gets to mentor and raise many more wild witches like her#who would have much better learning and accepting enviroment than she ever had#Also she following footsteps of Bump who was one of the only teachers who actually believed in her :')#Anyway cop Eda doesnt exist and never will#All hail principal Eda#edalyn clawthorne#the owl house spoilers#toh spoilers#the owl house#the owl house season finale#this was inspired by that one tweet#You know the one

Something that bothers me about a lot of academic analyses of Midsommar is when they stress Josh and Mark as examples of the dynamic of exploitation and manipulation being mutual when...I agree, it is, but simply saying that implies a greater deal of equality than there is?
#sometimes i think that critical analysis of midsommar inadvertantly leans into a degree of cultural relativism that i'm really#not comfortable with#especially when it doesn't fully acknowledge that they're invited guests#i agree that it's unethical for Josh to try to take the pictures#and some of the cut content highlights his character flaws#BUT this really doesn't work for simon and connie#them being shocked and horrified by what they saw isn't colonialism -- it's a justified reaction to not being told in advance what#the ritual actually involved and seeing two people being graphically killed in front of them#i think the material for this reading is in the film and it's intentional#but i also truly don't think you can apply a framework of colonialism...to Sweden.
