For the Dracula ask! <3
🩸BLOOD What is your favourite Dracula adaptation?
🚢SHIP If you had to go on a long journey with one Dracula character, who would you pick?
It's a tie between Count Dracula 1977 and Nosferatu 1979, though as an adaptation of the book 1977 series are of course superior, while Nosferatu is a better movie. Tbh I'm surprised how little love or interest is in the fandom for the BBC series, which I enjoyed more than the book. It follows text very closely, doesn't "nurf" any character to let others shine (except Seward who got screwed over as always lol), is very tender and intelligent and has this lovely melancholic atmosphere that is so specific for the British TV of those years. As for Nosferatu, I remember watching the 1922 original and thinking "why are there sequels, surely no one could surpass this" and then I got to the 1979 version and holy shit, they did surpass this somehow.
I've never quite understood the hype around Quincey, but he would probably be both the most comfortable to hang out with and travel with, considering his experience.
Thank you for the ask!

Just realised something…. back at the castle, the three Brides want “kisses” and blood from Jonathan, he only half conscious and helpless at their mercy. Meanwhile, the three Suitors will give half conscious Lucy their own blood willingly just to keep her alive and well, only one of them can expect a kiss as a reward.

Watching the 1977 version of Dracula with Louis Jordan and it's interesting seeing it while participating in Dracula Daily. Some things of note:
though all the relevant events still happen, Jonathan's time at the castle feels compressed and less of a slowburn compared to the books
the key thing is that this is a tv movie/mini series from the 70s with a small budget and the special effects reflect that. Ex: a weird exposure change to reflect vampire menacing, a dog on a boat playing Dracula-dog who does not look happy to be there, bat-Dracula sometimes played by a real bat just chilling and sometimes an obvious doll flapping about, the famous lizard wall crawl is more slow frog-like flops.
i actually really like Jordan's portrayal of Dracula. He's calm and collected and smugly enjoying tormenting Jonathan. A fun scene is the handling of the mirror, where instead of throwing it dramatically he just kind of casually drops it out the window. There's an interesting variation on his relationship with the three vampire ladies: their accusations of him not loving them comes across as more petulant while he seems more playfully exasperated by their behavior
while the vampires are certainly seductive at points, emphasis is made on them acting more animalistic which makes the feeding scenes feel more like assault than what most adaptations go for. The exception is when he feeds on Mina but the aftermath is very much played for horror.
Arthur Holmwood and Quincey Morris have been combined into a singular American Quincey Holmwood and yes it's jarring. Similarly Lucy and Mina are now sisters, removing the class dynamic between them; no attention is drawn to upper class Mina marrying solicitor Jonathan. Lucy is pretty close to her book self, very much still being a sweet girl everyone adores; it keeps the line about wishing she could marry multiple men so as not to hurt their feelings but it isn't turned into an excuse to make her the slutty one (as some adaptations tend to do)

New video about the Brides has dropped!
youtube
I think it's the first time I hear about the Transylvania Twist movie. Might be one of the few where they are portrayed as Dracula's family members (I don't remember who the vampiress from The Reluctant Werewolf is to him.) And Jonathan (1970) appears to be an even weirder movie than I thought.
