im really trying not to nitpick the latinist and appreciate it in the moment et cetera but if this authors name is supposed to be publius marius scaeva why would classicists commonly call him marius. thats sort of taken
#ribbits#people arent regularly calling catullus ‘valerius’ or cornelius gallus/nepos ‘cornelius’#because broadly speaking when several historical figures share the same names the goal is to distinguish them not get them confused more

Guess what we're finally listening to on a very quiet spring evening, with the window open so that anyone walking down the vennel as dusk falls gets the shit scared out of them by Richard Burton's voice looming ominously out of the darkness
#I need something to get me through this Latin dear god#Cornelius Nepos can be fun but not in bulk#Anyway#I've never actually listened to the entire album before and I know the plot is different to the novel but I think we deserve a treat#Let's see just how intensely 1970s and funky this thing really is#And if Forever Autumn really is the high pointof the whole thing or if there are other delights to be discovered

#it always strikes me how naturally jopson takes to command #being promoted from steward to 5th in command of the whole freaking thing might make someone a bit wary #to give orders and take control of a whole situation like that #but my man has no problem figuring out what needs doing and keeps a cool head! #i want to put him in a terrarium and tap on the glass - @marshmallow--galaxies
THE TERROR ▸ 1.08 terror camp clear
#the terror#thomas jopson#bestie ur tags are *chef's kiss* which is why i had to reblog them#but yes. this exactly#what always strikes me as hilarious about hickey trying to use jops's impromptu promotion to rile up hodge and the remaining crew members#is that while it works to a degree; it doesn't ever really have that “let's all hate on the nepo-baby” impact that hickey was going for#partly because he's never been a sailor before dabbing poor cornelius and leaving him in the canal; and so has no functional knowledge of#shipboard life or the complex hierarchy that goes along with it save what he gleans in the course of a scant few years#but also because none of the crew can actually accuse jopson of nepo behaviour at all#since he's one of the most earnest; hard-working and compassionate men on the expedition; who also just so happens to be#insanely good and talented at everything he tries his hand at; including being a natural-born leader and hypercompetent officer#anyway i stan one (1) certified badass motherfucker and his name is thomas jopson

Look, I’m a historian.
I must relate the deeds of men as they happened even if my people find them shameful.
YES, teenagers from Crete are encouraged to be polyamourous and YES, Spartian widows had sex for money.
But I digress. Now about the great generals of foreign lands…

A huge package arrives at the door labeled “to Helene from your godfather”
The box is full with over 70 books. Multiple books from Plutarch, Cornelius Nepos, Polybios and Arrian. A third of the books were newer looking books about the history of Egypt. The books on the top were all about artillery except for one about modern weapons. On the bottom there was one book by Rousseau, this one looked a lot less cared for and had burn-marks on its sides.
A letter attached read
“It took me a while to pile them all up for you, but I’m sure these books will be a grate influence on you and will be grate for your education.
These are all my personal favorites I’m sure you will enjoy them just as much”
-@alexanderfanboy
“Papa! Can we build one? Pleaaaase?” Helene holds up the book with the instructions on how to build a tabletop catapult. All in the appreciation of history and mathematics, of course.
Bessières, meanwhile, wonders about how many windows will be broken and despairs over his Imperial Majesty’s spelling. Well, it’s still better than Lannes’, he sniffs. “Alright, my sweet, we can build one, as long as you promise to not use it inside or at the house.”
“Yay!” Helene giggles, grinning ear to ear.
“But after you write a thank you to your godfather first. Time to practice your letters, like how Mademoiselle Brown showed you.”
[@alexanderfanboy will receive a crude but cute crayon doodle back, of him in his school uniform with a big cannon going “BOOM” and “tank you” scrawled under it.]

When did Cicero and Atticus meet? Are they childhood friends or have they met later in life? Thought I'd ask a professional since Google is of no help.
Not being a professional or an expert on these two, sometimes I have to remind myself that they did not spontaneously spawn as an old gay couple, but -
In the number of [Atticus' fellow students] were Lucius Torquatus, Caius Marius the younger, and Marcus Cicero, whom he so attached to himself by his intercourse with them, that no one was ever more dear to them.
- Cornelius Nepos: Life of Atticus
Obligatory eyebrow raise on the word intercourse. Anyway, they studied together, and the other two mentioned here with them are also interesting. Marius the younger and L. Torquatus who is going to fight for Sulla very soon?! So these are the roots of Atticus' strategy of being friends with both sides?
#h.#anyway feel free to add atticus lore. i do not know him the way i know cassius for example.#titus pomponius atticus#marcus tullius cicero#gaius marius the younger#lucius manlius torquatus#is he the torquatus of dionysia fame by the way?

Do you think the song "Don't Lose ur Head" would fit Alcibiades? OK, sure, he doesn't get beheaded, but the way you present him to me gives the vibe of someone who just wants to have someone fun, claims that he doesn't want to hurt anyone, but his actions end up hurting people whether intentionally or not.
I think when he does hurt people it's 100% intentional. I do tend to focus on the more wholesome Alcibiades that's in Plato, but in Thucydides he purposefully does things specifically to hurt Athens, for example, and by extention a lot of people.
I do agree that in some occasions, like punching hipponicus, partying, drinking and potentially profaning the mysteries and stuff, he wanted to just have fun but people didn't like it at all.
And yess there were some lyrics in that song that do really fit him!! 🤔🤔🤔
ALSO. Funny little beheading detail: In the account of his death given by Cornelius Nepos, he does actually get beheaded! After the assassins kill him they take his head to the satrap for proof.
For further details on that, here's a pdf on jstor on the various versions of his death:

own a private plane? consider themself self made or a nepo baby?
Own a private plane?
Absolutely not, she was tempted at one point because a private jet would be so convenient but she just finds it wasteful. She's always been a bit of an environment girly so she'll just fly business or first class, nbd.
Consider themself self made or a nepo baby?
She considers herself like 80% self-made, 20% incredibly lucky-- she acknowledges that without her husband financially supporting her while she was trying to make it in the industry and working on her Masters degree, she might have given up or at least struggled much longer than she did struggle. Her husband did not buy her a career, but he did foot the bill for studio time to record quality demos to send to labels.
Cornelius had no industry connections, but his money provided a safety net for her that would not have been there otherwise and she does know how lucky she was. She wouldn't say she's a nepo baby but does acknowledge the fact that before she had a label, her husband's name would've been hyperlinked in blue on Wikipedia.

Early life and education.
Jedaiah Mosha Lim was born on April 24, 1995, in Seoul, and grew up in there. He moved to Jakarta in 2011 due to personal reasons and so he work both in South Korea and Indonesia under the same agency, HLA & Co. Jeremiah Lim, his father, is a Canadian-Korean chef who runs restaurants in several countries. Inggrid Carmelita Lee, his mother, is an Indonesian-Korean. The first born of Lim, Theodosia Lim, is a business woman who owns a beauty brand Skèenosia with the help of Mosha Lim as co-owner and the brand ambassador. His brother, Joe Lim, is an editor for the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).
He is a multilingual speaker. He communicates in Korean, English, and Bahasa Indonesia. Yet he stated that he is not fluent in Bahasa Indonesia¹.
Rise to prominence.
Mosha is a South Korean actor under Hoshka Lim Agency (HLA & Co.). The issue was raging because his name was similar to the agency and people started calling him Nepo Baby. Yet the agency released their statement that Mosha is a self made-up actor who built his reputation from scratch.
He began his career as a kid in television productions, appearing in the drama series Run Away in 2000. In 2004 he made his film debut in the comedy drama How to Be Gangnamian and appeared in Jo Kihyun’s romance film Should Be You as Lee Yoo. Mosha came to international attention with the lead role in Brigitta Kim’s film What Mommy Should Do (2006), earning him a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Actor. Alongside supporting roles in Monica Gerwig's films To The Bone (2007) and I Am You (2012), he took on starring roles as drug addict Denny ‘Sinting’ Yang in the Indonesian movie Kapan Kapok? (2015), Joe Kim in Henry Leigh's fiction film Memory (2020), and a romantic horror film Three of Us (2022), which he also produced.
Public image and fashion.
Several media publications consider Lim to be among the most talented actors of his generation.Remarking upon his performance, Kenneth Turan of the Los Angeles Times wrote that “he might be the male actor of his generation”. In 2018, he appeared in Forbes’s 30 Under 30 Hollywood & Entertainment list.
Off-screen, Lim has been described by the media as a fashion icon, with his looks highlighted as his trademarks. Vogue named him the most influential man in fashion in 2019, writing “those fashion choices are all the more impressive considering that Lim styles himself”. In 2020, GQ ranked him as the best-dressed man in the world.
Personal life.
Lim splits his time between Seoul and Jakarta. Despite significant media attention and public interest, he rarely discusses the romantic aspects of his personal life.
Lim is an avid sports fan; in his youth, he aspired to be a professional swimmer. He enjoys hip-hop music and considers rapper Kid Cudi to be his biggest career inspiration.

"Men's dinner parties are held in these large rooms; for it was not the practice, according to Greek custom, for the mistress of the house to be present. On the contrary, such peristyles are called the men's apartments, since in them the men can stay without interruption from the women ... The Greeks call the large rooms in which men's dinner parties are usually held ἁνδρωνεϛ, because women do not go there."
-- Vitruvius trans. M.H. Morgan
"For instance, what Roman would blush to take his wife to a dinner-party? What matron does not frequent the front rooms of her dwelling and show herself in public? But it is very different in Greece; for there a woman is not admitted to a dinner-party, unless relatives only are present, and she keeps to the more secluded part of the house called 'the women's apartment,' to which no man has access who is not near of kin."
-- Cornelius Nepos trans. J.C. Rolfe
really enjoying this very specific bit of ancient literature I've come across that consists of "roman authors who clearly think it's very strange that greek houses have separate areas for men and women"
#it's not as evident in vitruvius from this but he's just gone through all this stuff about roman houses so btwn this and them not having#atria it comes across as seeming like a sort of strange way of doing things#thoughts#obviously there is a certain amount of exoticizing greece that's happening here but also it is pretty clear from archaeology that greek#houses Were very gendered in ways roman ones absolutely weren't so I think it does kind of stand up in the end#plus greek sources e.g. lysias theopompus etc as the other side of this view
