"The prospects of the world staying within the 1.5C limit on global heating have brightened owing to the “staggering” growth of renewable energy and green investment in the past two years, the chief of the world’s energy watchdog has said.
Fatih Birol, the executive director of the International Energy Agency, and the world’s foremost energy economist, said much more needed to be done but that the rapid uptake of solar power and electric vehicles were encouraging.
“Despite the scale of the challenges, I feel more optimistic than I felt two years ago,” he said in an interview. “Solar photovoltaic installations and electric vehicle sales are perfectly in line with what we said they should be, to be on track to reach net zero by 2050, and thus stay within 1.5C. Clean energy investments in the last two years have seen a staggering 40% increase.” ...
The IEA, in a report entitled Net Zero Roadmap, published on Tuesday morning, also called on developed countries with 2050 net zero targets, including the UK, to bring them forward by several years.
The report found “almost all countries must move forward their targeted net zero dates”, which for most developed countries are 2050. Some developed countries have earlier dates, such as Germany with 2045 and Austria and Iceland with 2040 and for many developing countries they are much later, 2060 in the case of China and 2070 for India.
Cop28, the UN climate summit to be held in Dubai this November and December, offered a key opportunity for countries to set out tougher emissions-cutting plans, Birol said.
He wants to see Cop28 agree a tripling of renewable energy by 2030, and a 75% cut in methane from the energy sector by the same date. The latter could be achieved at little cost, because high gas prices mean that plugging leaks from oil and gas wells can be profitable...
He also called for Cop28 to agree a doubling of energy efficiency. “To reduce fossil fuel emissions, we need to reduce demand for fossil fuels. This is a golden condition, if we are to reach our climate goals,” he said.
Birol stopped short of endorsing the call that some countries have made for a full phase-out of fossil fuels by 2050 to be agreed at Cop28, but he said all countries must work on reducing their fossil fuel use."

So having a fossil fuel executive as the president of the UN Climate Summit is going about as well as expected
Fossil fuel companies and the politicians they employ are murderers. And they should be treated as such.
Abolish billionaires. Ban private jets & mega yachts. Invest in renewable energy and stop listening to politicians and corporations over scientists.

Saudi Arabia, the world’s leading exporter of oil, has become the biggest obstacle to an agreement at the United Nations climate summit in Dubai, where countries are debating whether to call for a phaseout of fossil fuels in order to fight global warming, negotiators and other officials said.
The Saudi delegation has flatly opposed any language in a deal that would even mention fossil fuels — the oil, gas and coal that, when burned, create emissions that are dangerously heating the planet. Saudi negotiators have also objected to a provision, endorsed by at least 118 countries, aimed at tripling global renewable energy capacity by 2030.
Saudi diplomats have been particularly skillful at blocking discussions and slowing the talks, according to interviews with a dozen people who have been inside closed-door negotiations. Tactics include inserting words into draft agreements that are considered poison pills by other countries; slow-walking a provision meant to help vulnerable countries adapt to climate change; staging a walkout in a side meeting; and refusing to sit down with negotiators pressing for a phaseout of fossil fuels.
The Saudi opposition is significant because U.N. rules require that any agreement forged at the climate summit be unanimously endorsed. Any one of the 198 participating nations can thwart a deal.
Saudi Arabia isn’t the only country raising concerns about more ambitious global efforts to fight climate change. The United States has sought to inject caveats into the fossil fuel phaseout language. India and China have opposed language that would single out coal, the most polluting of fossil fuels.
…Saudi Arabia has stood out as the most implacable opponent of any agreement on fossil fuels.
“Most countries vary on the degree or speed of how fast you get out of fossil fuels,” said Linda Kalcher, a former climate adviser to the United Nations who has been in negotiating rooms this week. Saudi Arabia, she said, “doesn’t even want to have the conversation.”
Saudi officials did not respond to requests for comment.

1) The UN put a Emirati prince, who is also head of a state oil company, in charge of its climate change talks.
2) CNN is shocked that this fossil fuel billionaire, who somehow hijacked this already-pointless conference for horny alcoholic diplomats, thinks there is no scientific proof for human-caused climate change.
With journalism this embarrassingly absurd, who needs Facebook misinformation?
I don't know anything about this Laura Paddison who works for CNN. But it is obvious I have no reason to.
This is how the world boils to death. And if no one cares this hard, then good riddance.
The Ruling Council of Krypton wasn't this rock-stupid.

These findings reinforce the significant historical responsibility of developed countries for current warming, particularly the former colonial powers in Europe. While they account for less than 11% of the world’s population today, together, the US, EU and UK are responsible for 39% of cumulative historical emissions and current CO2-related warming. Many of these countries now have small and declining emissions. Yet their relative wealth today – and their historical contributions to current warming – are recognised within the international climate regime as being tied to a responsibility to lead, not only in terms of cutting their own emissions, but also in supporting the climate response in less developed countries.

Y'all I saw a tiktok that was like "why is there a panel at COP28 about Responsible yatching? And why is it led by a racing driver?"
And my immediate thought was "please don't be Seb."
I went to look it up and it was moderated by Nico Rosberg 😭😭😭

COP has always been a kick-the-can joke.
each performance ends with some collective resolution that will be phased-in within 30 years. it always seems to be 30 years? phased-in solar or wind energy, phased-in electric cars, reduced emissions, etc…
generational kick-the-can… the wealthy can ride it out, corporations will survive, lobby for concessions & governments will go to war over resources… war/military spending far exceeds financial commitments by the industrial powerhouses.
this joke continues with an oil baron as president of COP 28. & think tanks debating the mealy-mouthed terminology that will be used & how they may be interpreted — 'phased out' or 'phased down' … in 30 years …
in the meantime? 'responsible yachting'
