The sky grew dusk as nightfall grew over the city of Miami. Laying in your shared bed with Armando, each of you was doing your own thing. Coming back from a heated mission, all he wanted to do was to be cuddled up next to you and chill. Both wanting a peaceful night.

Well, that’s what they thought.

“¡¡Cúbreme de mierda!!” Armando screamed into his headset as his fingers frantically pressed the buttons on the ps5 controller, trying to capture the flag of the opposing team. “Todos ustedes son tan inútiles.” The male spoke as he got sniped from the opposition who was hiding in a building, placing his controller down gently before shouting out of anger.

“Babe.”

“lo siento amor.”

2 more hours went by. constant shouting and loud echos bounced off the floor at Armando paced up and down the room while stomping, shouting at the screen to his friends. “¡¡Maldita sea, revíveme!! ¿Qué estás haciendo?” Pointing at the screen , the mexican’s face was slowly turning red in anger at not only the frustration of his team’s incompetence but also the disbelief of it all.

You was used to it all. He mentioned this is how he liked to “de-stress” after missions, yet it did everything but that.

Nevertheless it was funny. He acted exactly how he did in missions , like he did in the video games. Always showing the same energy. His friends shouted back at him, not understanding Armando’s complaints or tactics, raising some of their own before they got shut down by the stubborn male.

They were always loud to the point where you could hear their voices through your man’s headset.

“¡Escúchanos Armando, tus tácticas son horribles!” His team exclaimed.

“My tactics are-“

And then the arguing started again. However, in the end they won the game. After everyone finished praising each other, Armando turned off his playstation and climbed into bed with you, kissing your forehead delicately as a way to apologise again for his outburst during his gaming sessions.

“Sorry babe.” The male whispered, kissing your cheek. Smiling at the comfort of his touch, you just turn to him. “You know i’m used to it already babe.”

Clicking his tongue, the male just turned back forward before shaking his head while slightly chuckling. Embarrassed by his own outburst as he recollects what happened 30 minutes beforehand. Reaching for the remote, Armando began to flick through the movie selection on his fire stick on the shared tv that hung on the middle of your white wall. LED lights were decorated around the tv, syncing with the background of the movie or show playing on the screen.

Scrolling through tiktok, you was bored. A collection of hair, cooking and funny videos made up a multitude of your for you page. Your eyes eventually landed on a specific video where girls pranked their boyfriend with this sound. Playing it lowly while turning on the captions, you watched the video secretly so Armando couldn’t hear.

“I’m so doing this..”

After a couple minutes, Armando finally found a tv show to watch and settled in bed. Flicking on the reality tv show called “Perfect Match” where reality influencers come on the show to find love ultimately and win money. Both enjoying trash tv, each episode you commentated and gave your thoughts. With Armando laid next to you sucked into the TV, you thought it would be the perfect time to do the prank.

Clicking the start button, the sound started playing.

You lipsynced along to the words, being a bit skeptical of how your man was going to react.

“It’s 7PM, Friday,

It’s 95 degrees.

I ain’t got no nigga,”

Slowly turning the camera slightly onto him, you saw Armando give you a death stare. Looking up at you confused. “You got a man the fuck?”

Not being able to lip-sync the rest of the sound, you burst out laughing. The video quickly coming to an end. Watching it back, you started laughing again, watching how his eyebrows furrowed in confusion.

“Babe, it was just a prank.” Laughing while slapping his chest.

He was unfazed. Looking up at you with a nonchalant look, however, something was up in his eyes.

“Babe?”

“Te voy a mostrar que tienes un hombre.” He lowly expressed before attacking you with kisses and throwing the covers over the both of you.

now felix found himself agonising over a present sitting on his desk. 

“plagg, can’t you help me out here or something? and stop playing on my ps5 without asking.” he said through gritted teeth and snatched the controller away. plagg, the cat-like faerie, dangled trying to hold onto it for dear life.

“hey! give it! im almost done battling liquid flame!” 

“not when i’m in a crisis.”

with one last yank, plagg dropped to the floor, sprawling dramatically on the carpet.

“what sort of crisis justifies interrupting final fantasy?”

as much as felix liked ffxvi, some things are just more important. this, was one of them. he walked to his desk and picked up the present. the crisp wrapping paper crinkled under his tightening grasp.

“you know how long i’ve been trying to give this to her, don’t you?”

“yeah, which is lame. just call her, arrange a date to meet, and give it. voila, simple as that.”

“‘simple as that’, my ass.” felix spat.

“what else do you want me to say?” 

“i don’t know, maybe try being supportive for once.”

a lightbulb lit up above plagg and a smirk stretched across his face. shit, he’s scheming again. but too late, felix couldn’t take back his words. maybe he shouldn't announce his feelings to this little devil spawn creature next time, he mused bitterly. everything involving plagg had consequences, one way or another.

by the time felix snapped out of his thoughts, plagg was already dancing atop his phone, punching buttons while giggling like a madman. that number sequence, felix recognised it too well. 

he dived to catch plagg but then a beep came from the phone. a honeyed voice spoke first, delicately yet filled with liveliness.

“felix?”

his throat dried instantly.

“w-well uhm…”

in a corner, plagg toppled over from laughing too hard. felix shot him a glare.

“do you need anything?” 

“i-i’m sorry, my younger cousin, he uh-” felix scrambled to put his phone to his ear, heart pounding so loudly he almost couldn’t hear himself. “he was playing around with my phone and accidentally called…”

“oh really? i see! haha kids these days are really playful aren’t they? i have a younger cousin myself so i understand, no worries!” her voice… it was so warm. felix felt like melting just from hearing it so close to his ear, but it was no time to be doing that! he hated to admit but plagg had helped him, albeit in a sudden and cruel way. and he didn’t want to waste the opportunity he had now.

“bridgette wait!” felix gripped the phone until his knuckles turned ghostly white. 

“hm?”

“do you… want to uhm.. i don’t know…meet up with me? if that isn’t too much trouble! i don’t want to trouble you at all! you can say no it’s fine!” felix had no clue what he was rambling on about. all he could see was his life flashing before his eyes. what if she said no? oh god that would be so embarrassing. 

“sure, i would love to!” bridgette answered bubbly. love… to? felix couldn’t believe his ears. he pranced around his room, trying to digest her words and reply at the same time. she said she would love to! a dream come true!

“then if it’s okay with you, how about meeting at bassin de la villette? i know it’s not the most appropriate place but…”

“sounds good to me! see you later!” beep. felix stared blankly at the call ended screen. in the background, plagg inched slowly toward the top shelf where felix placed the controller. silence… then...

“WAIT LATER? TODAY?”

his voice boomed through the house. plagg fell off the shelf in a shock and hit the floor hard, back to square one.

"plagg! what do i do?" felix cried. "i can't do this! i'm not prepared!"

but plagg, heartless as ever, only rubbed his head and crossed his arms. "that's on you nitwit! you only said you wanted to meet. it's obvious she would think it was today. and hell you screaming like a girl for? it would be funny if i wasn't hurt in the process!"

"suck it up and stop being a drama queen. faeries don't feel pain."

"it hurts emotionally. my ego. aughhh, i'm leaving. your presence pains me." with that, plagg sweeped the imaginary dust from his imaginary pants and flew out the door, leaving felix in a pile of anxious, blubbering mess on the ground. only after a few minutes, did felix finally look up.

"wait where did you go? plagg? dude... plagg? hold on i need you, you can't just do this to me. plagg!"

Suicide Squad Kill the Justice League terá temporadas com diferentes personagens

Um insider que alega saber dos planos da Rocksteady divulgou o que o estúdio tem preparado para Suicide Squad Suicide Squad Kill the Justice League chega em pouco mais de duas semanas e novos rumores continuam acontecendo. O mais novo deles revela o conteúdo pós lançamento, com diferentes temporadas envolvendo a adição de novos personagens e histórias.

Claro que esse vazamento terá spoilers, então esteja avisado. As informações vêm do insider Miller Ross.

Segundo ele, Suicide Squad Kill the Justice League chegará na “temporada 0”. Cada temporada terá dois episódios, mas a primeira delas oferecerá somente um episódio. Cada episódio é uma atualização separada e tem seus próprios conteúdos, histórias, cutscenes, equipamentos e mais.

A primeira temporada, de acordo com o insider, terá os episódios “Fear” e “Duality” com a presença do Coringa (Joker), que morre em Batman Arkham Knight, mas não sabemos a linha do tempo do novo game da Rocksteady e se tem alguma ligação com a franquia Batman Arkham.

Em seguida, a segunda temporada trará os episódios “Frozen Heart” e “Winter”, com a participação de alguém que o insider só identifica com um emoji de uma carinha congelando, então muito provavelmente ele se refere a Mr. Freeze.

A terceira temporada trará Lawless, que foi um integrante do Esquadrão Suicida no passado, junto com os episódios “Thives” e “Balance”. Esse conteúdo deve chegar próximo do Halloween.

Para fechar os conteúdos extras de Suicide Squad Kill the Justice League, a quarta temporada contará com os episódios “Assassin” e “Control”, além do personagem Deathstroke.

De acordo com Miller Ross, o segundo ano de conteúdos ainda não tem as temporadas organizadas e pode acabar acontecendo sem a estrutura do primeiro ano. Mas o segundo ano de conteúdos extras só existirá se o jogo for bem durante o primeiro.

O insider confirma ainda que o novo game da Rocksteady terá presença de Barbara, Robin e Mulher Gato em algum momento. O que não foi revelado é se os personagens citados aqui serão jogáveis.

De qualquer forma, a “temporada zero” de Suicide Squad Kill the Justice League estreia no dia 2 de fevereiro, quando o jogo chega para PC, PS5 e Xbox Series X|S.

okay so just to be clear, i have this song on his playlist referring to the years prior to percy joining vox machina. i know the information we have about what he’s doing is pretty limited. we know he’s seeking revenge, tracking down anna ripley to the best of his ability & tearing through aything & anyone who gets in his way. i think during this time orthax has a lot of influence over him because it is the first time he’s had to grapple with such extreme rage & it’s like the Perfect Opportunity for a demon to encourage evil to be inflicted into this world. 

though percy grapples with the morality of it all a lot & fights himself on it, he also views morality as relative to the situation. he doesn’t know that the demon orthax is influence him, enouraging & tending to the darkness percy had already began to grow. but what is most terrifying to him is that he kind of likes it. he kind of likes the power in the palm of his hand, the scent of gunpowder & gore. it’s the most power he’s had since his family was killed & it’s the power he’s going to use to avenge them. so of course he gets tunnel vision. he starts hand feeding the darkest parts of himself. 

vox machina quite literally saves percy from himself. he’s still stubborn & makes hasty decisions but they encourage the good that’s always been in him. even when they’re being a bunch of assholes, they make him want to be better. even if he won’t admit this.... but that’s a different conversation entirely. i’m gonna dig into a few specific lines

percy was raised to be a kind kid. it was' always a super loving environment but his parents raised him to be good as they could. he was given the opportunity to thrive & grow on his own terms. he began inventing because he wanted to make life better for those around him, to help advance the technology in whitestone to the best of his ability. he knew that as a de rolo it was his responsibility to be good to his people the best way you know how to. there was always the scratch that he could use his brain for something ore devastating, but it was never his intention to use his brain to put weapons into this world. to make it more violent.

but when he got older & the briarwoods betrayed his family???? his destiny became more clear. he knew if he ever escaped he would reject those expectations of kindness. the people who taught him to serve his fellow man were dead, rotting in shallow graves if they were even alotted that decency. where percy could have become an asset to the briarwoods if they hadn’t killed his family & tortured he & his sister, instead they forge the only two people that can take them down. percy has a line in the show that is like  ‘ i am what they made me ‘ while lamenting about the cruelty it takes to exact his vengance. they tortured the kindness right out of him via meathook & co

of course as orthax gains more influence over percy, his cruelty grows. what was once a nescessity is almost sport. not saying that he is hunting people for sport but there is such control in taking a man’s life that in the moment, on occasion, he almost likes it. of course this is a sentiment he beats himself up about because he wants to make better decisions. he wants to value life. but it’s hard when you have a ps5 in your brain telling you to kill all your friends. 

the cruelty is so deeply a part of him at one point that he thinks it will always be so. so he doesn’t always fight it? not until he understands that it’s not just him. he is not the only one making these decisions. when he understands that orthax is a demon it’s the first time he considers that he can be an ok person, which is the first step to embracing good.

ahhhh yes. here is that theme i love about losing the future someone thought they were going to have & being unable to visualize a future without those hopes. he spent his whole life thinking about who he would be, who he could help, where he would fit into his family & then it’s all gone one day. his new future only goes as far as bloodshed & he has no idea what happens next. he thinks he’s the last de rolo for a long time but he is unwilling to rule. cruelty wouldn’t suit his people well & he’d already proven himself to be so. of course this perception shifts when he finds out he has a sister [ cassandra ] who survived... but until cassandra, the only plans he had were to kill. regardless of the price. but cassandra being alive changes everything, it makes him want to not only survive but live as well. but tht doesn’t change the fact that he was stuck there for soooo long. 

also the allusion to him not being rich anymore. i am constantly thinking about how he went from having endless privledge, the finest things, so much opportunity to sleeping barefoot on the icy streets because he had nowhere else to go when he escaped from the briarwoods. but there is also useful anonymity in being poor, being someone people don’t look at. blessed are the poor bcs no one is going to notice the blood spatter up their arm when fleeing a murder scene u know ???

ahhhhh yes. yes yes yes. though the briarwoods made him he is unwilling to be used by them. he is unwilling to be a pawn. he plans to be a catalyst, the catalyst that changes their life as they were that to him. in his rage he doesn’t consider the guilt. the rest of his life he faces the consequences of making his gun, of putting forth that kind of technology into the world. it changes warfare forever when more people start making them [ ana ripley literally has a line about spreading the idea just because she knows that it will make percy FURIOUS to know people are making guns & putting more of that evil into the world ] 

but it isn’t about that when he makes his first gun. it’s about revenge, it’s about mad genius, it’s about walking the path he’d set in front of him regardless of the consequence. but there will always be a tinge of pride he has in his invention, mixed in with the guilt & everything else. he made something that was not in the world beforehand. something that has helped fell vampires, dragons, motherfucking ana ripley. though he inflicted evil onto this world it can’t be undone. so why not reclaim it? why not use it to protect the world & those he loves that live in it.

while we’re on the subject of the guilt when he passes this time where he embraces the darkest parts of him, he looks back & knows how wrong he was. rage is not all a person is & he comes to understand this with a lot of healing. it doesn’t undo the things he’s made, the things he’s done but it does give him a deeper understanding & appreciation of what doing good in the world can do. what a person is capable of, regardless of what they think of themselves. no man is truly righteous, just as no man is truly evil. there is cruelty in all of us it is just a matter of deciding what to do with it.

Horizon Forbidden West - Review

Em Junho de 2020, Horizon Zero Dawn teve a sua sequência anunciada, o Horizon Forbidden West, que foi lançado em 18 de Fevereiro de 2022 para PS4 e PS5.

A história se passa 6 meses depois do fim de Zero Dawn. O mundo está correndo risco novamente devido ao sistema de terra formação que está fora de controle e está destruindo o planeta. Nessa sequência iremos acompanhar a jornada de Aloy em busca de um backup do sistema Gaia para conseguir parar o processo de terra formação antes que seja tarde demais. E Aloy é a única capaz de fazer isso.

Os personagens estão bem mais carismáticos e cativantes. Os personagens novos são interessantes.

O jogo possui uma pegada Sci Fi muito interessante na história. Essa mistura de dinossauros robôs com civilizações não tecnológicas, dá um charme muito especial ao jogo.

Primeiro de tudo, o impacto visual que você tem ao iniciar esse jogo é muito forte. Eu joguei ele no modo performace de 60 FPS. Digo com facilidade que Horizon Forbidden West é o jogo mais bonito que eu já vi no PS5. Os cenários são um espetáculo visual, repletos de detalhes e super coloridos. As cidades do jogo são bem vivas, principalmente a cidade de Sonora, ela é a minha favorita.

O jogo possui loadings extremamente rápidos na versão de PS5.

O gameplay deu uma boa melhorada. Agora a exploração do jogo está bem mais dinâmica e divertida, ela possui uma verticalidade maior e agora também é possível nadar. A água desse jogo é mais bonita que a da vida real.

Além do combate com arco e flecha e estilingue, o jogo também conta com combate melee usando a lança. O confronto contra os outros humanos deu uma melhorada, está mais diversificado e menos chato.

No combate também é possível utilizar armadilhas para lutar contra os seus inimigos, desde armadilhas que causam dano de explosão até de dano elemental como ácido ou de eletricidade. Também é possível utilizar partes caídas dos robôs como armas, apesar delas só poderem ser usadas por tempo limitado, ou seja, até quando durar a munição.

Uma maneira mais fácil de derrotar os inimigos é atingir os pontos fracos e utilizar armas que possuam o dano elemental referente a fraqueza daquele inimigo.

A variedade de inimigos deu uma aumentada, agora conta com robôs tartarugas, crocodilos, cobras e muito mais.

O jogo conta com várias atividades no mapa, como missões secundárias, colecionáveis para serem adquiridos, contratos de coletas, corridas, caldeirões, acampamentos rebeldes e muito mais.

Eu senti que esse jogo pega tudo do jogo anterior e melhora. Aspectos que eu não gostava do Horizon Zero Dawn como a pouca presença da trilha sonora, lutas chatas contra os seres humanos e algumas boss fights bem desinteressantes e cansativas, tudo isso não se encontra mais aqui no Forbidden West. É uma melhora muito grande de um jogo para o outro, isso me surpreendeu bastante.

Eu levei em torno de 23 horas para terminar o jogo. Ele possui um bom ritmo e não senti que ele tem muita barriga.

Horizon Forbidden West é o exemplo de uma sequência que aprendeu com os erros do jogo anterior e fez a sua lição de casa. É um jogo muito divertido, que te mantém curioso com os rumos que a história está tomando. É uma obra bem sólida, sem dúvidas, ele é um dos melhores jogos que está disponível para o PS4 e PS5.

März 2023, aber auch viele Jahre davor, so ungefähr ab 2015

Von Asteroiden, Raumschiffen, Säbelkämpfern und mittelalterlichen Burgen. Und Laborgeräte werden kurz erwähnt 

Ich kann das zum Aufschreibezeitpunkt 2023 leider nicht mehr ganz genau datieren, aber es muss wahrscheinlich im Spätsommer 2015 gewesen sein. Da fand eine Hochschulveranstaltung statt, auf der ich das erste Mal ein Headset für virtuelle Realität (VR) auf dem Kopf habe. Ich bin völlig geflasht: Ich weiß, dass ich mich in einem vollkommen normalen Hörsaal befinde, die Tische und Stühle sind aber an die Wände geräumt. In der Mitte des Hörsaales ist also eine große freie Fläche, ein Bereich ist mit Klebeband markiert, in den soll ich mich für den Beginn stellen. Von dem mit Klebeband markierten Bereich geht ein provisorisch auf den Boden geklebtes Brett mit ca 10 cm Breite und ca 1 cm Höhe ab. In den vier Ecken des Raumes stehen vier Stative mit Antennen drauf, die dazu dienen, das Headset und die Controller im Raum sehr genau zu lokalisieren. Am Headset befinden sich dicke Kabel. Der Kollege setzt mir also dieses Headset auf, das ist wegen der dicken Kabel etwas mühsam - aber sofort befinde ich mich auf einem hohen Turm einer mittelalterlichen Burg. Der Kollege drückt mir noch in jede Hand einen Controller. Die ganze folgende Zeit bleibt der Kollege so ca 1-2 m hinter mir stehen um sich darum zu kümmern, dass die Kabel des Headsets, die zu dem Computer an der Wand laufen, mir nicht das Headset vom Kopf ziehen oder ich die Kabel aus dem Computer ziehe.

Ich finde es unfassbar, wie schnell ich die optisch vorgegaukelte Burg als Realität akzeptiere. Ich sehe von der Burgzinne eine schmale Brücke, die zu einer anderen Burgzinne führt. Ich trete vorsichtig auf die schmale Brücke, unter mir sehe ich in einen bestimmt 20 m tiefen Abgrund. Ich fühle an meinen Füßen, wie schmal die Brücke ist, und ich sehe, wie es daneben in die Tiefe geht. Ich weiß, dass ich mich auf diesem Brett befinden muss, das nur ca 1 cm hoch ist, aber mein Kopf tut sich sehr schwer damit, diese Realität zu akzeptieren. Die Virtualität vor meinen Augen ist so viel glaubwürdiger! Ich balanciere also vorsichtig rüber zum andere Burgturm. Dort kann ich einige Fässer aufheben und von dem Turm werfen. Die Flugbahn und die Kollisionen der Fässer wird, wie mir der Kollege später erklärt, von einer "Physics Engine” berechnet. Ich empfinde dieses Erlebnis in der virtuellen Realität als unglaublich beeindruckend.

Seit  2019 benutze ich für die Virtualisierung von Laborgeräten in meinen eigenen Lehrveranstaltungen auch VR Headsets. Die haben ihren Computer mit vollständiger Rechenpower jetzt mittlerweile eingebaut und brauchen keinen externen Steuercomputer und auch keine Antennen in den Ecken des Raumes zur Lokalisierung mehr, nur noch eine WLAN-Verbindung.  Kurz probiere ich darauf zum Kennenlernen auch zwei oder drei Spiele aus, unter anderem das von Kathrin hier bereits beschriebene Beat Saber. Ich muss zugeben: die spontane Faszination ist riesig, führt aber nicht dazu, dass ich eines der Spiele häufiger oder länger spiele. Ich bin aber auch nicht so ein Computerspiel-Freak.

Im Februar 2023 besucht mich ein Freund, der sehr digitalaffin und vor allem auch wesentlich computerspielaffiner ist als ich. Ihm zeige ich ein VR Headset, er probiert es aus und an seiner Reaktion erinnere ich mich an mein erstes Benutzen so eines Headsets: Er ist ebenfalls vollkommen fasziniert. VR ist also noch nicht alltäglich geworden. Ich sehe, wie er in einem virtuellen Raum herumtastet, und dabei den virtuellen Raum als Realität wahrnimmt. Eine PS5 besitzt er bereits, und am nächsten Tag erzählt er mir, dass er sich auf die Warteliste für das neue VR Headset der PS5 hat setzen lassen.

Sonic X Shadow Generations (PS5)

Though I did get the PS4 version to see if the extra grunt can be used, at some point.

First, Sonic's side: this is a real good version of Sonic Generations, it runs fucking immaculately and looks so nice, and I swear if it's not just performance making it feel better they've definitely boosted Sonic's base speed before any skill upgrades, so it's a dream to boost in. There are some glitches which I didn't experience on PS3 originally or on PC a year or two ago, mainly Classic Sonic (I call him Snoic as I dislike him) has troubles going up loop-de-loops below a certain size, rather consistently.

There's also some changes to cutscenes and dialogue which stick out and are plainly because of Sega's odd "we must make it The Brand" mandates lately. Amy isn't being held back at arm's length in the opening cutscene any more, for example, because she isn't meant to be hyper-crazy for Sonic now...even though, in the games, that didn't really start coming about til Sonic Frontiers, set a few stories after this. Tails drops a lot more names of settings of past games rather awkwardly, Sonic brings up the Time Stones (it's weird coming from him, I feel like, that should be a Tails line) and some jokes are stripped out pointlessly - it was Lost World that lost the fucking plot, Generations' jokes were fine. Like, the game is hyper-light on plot and dialogue, so it doesn't ruin it or anything, but it does stick out.

Otherwise Sonic Generations is Sonic Generations: Modern Sonic has lovely, beautiful levels that feel like dreams to play (except Planet Wisp), and then you have to play as Snoic the bastard where obstacles are haphazardly placed to ruin all sense of flow because otherwise Youtube Videogame Design Essayists would tear their clothes in the street and endlessly cry "momentum". They're not awful but they aren't satisfying. The final boss is also still an awkward heap that barely cares about your input and just kind of happens regardless. They also added Chao collectibles to levels which invariably require slowing or completely stopping to find, and thus don't jar well, but also don't matter at all.

Now, Shadow Generations: this is the real treat of the package. Shadow feels fucking incredible to play as and all of his levels are good to fucking great, with a really good boss fight spread all of which play much better than Sonic's (which are mostly just fine, final aside). There's not a bad or even slightly iffy one among them, and while Shadow has fewer levels (5 worlds with 2 Acts each, to Sonic's 9 with 2 Acts; Shadow has 4 challenge levels per world to Sonic's 10, 5 for each Sonic) all of Shadow's are good, whereas there's a few iffy or outright stinkers for Sonic.

Shadow gets alien transformation powers that provide new forms to play with or new abilities to use, and has a whole set of skills Sonic doesn't, from Chaos Control to stop time, to Chaos Spears to stun enemies and hit switches, to the Doom Blast where he rinses slightly sturdier enemies and then blasts them across the level before teleporting after them. They are all stylistically rad and also provide a lot of dynamism to levels, helping to provide more avenues for path forks and more ways to enhance the flow of a level. They also all chain together pretty well - you can sling Chaos Spears super-fast so you can throw one mid-Homing Attack to stun an enemy you're zooming at, for example - and that means there's lots of technical skill room with his moveset, more than Sonic's already considerable amount. Chaos Control, for example, also stops the level timer, giving you 5 seconds of breathing room each use for hitting the S-rank time requirements, which also means Shadow Generations gets to be just a bit stricter about S-rank time limits in contrast to Sonic not really giving a shit at all.

Where the gameplay is excellent, and has me hope we stay with Generations/Frontiers boost formulae games for years more, the story leaves a lot to be desired. There was a lot of hype built up for it, there's a whole set of animated shorts emphasising Shadow's backstory and setting up for this, they talked a big game of having Sonic comics writer Ian Flynn on, only for the plot to be a holding pattern as they turn in a circle and sort of retread Shadow's arc from the 2005 Shadow the Hedgehog game.

There was a lot they could've done, they could've advanced Shadow's character at all, but they didn't, and at the end they do a return-to-status quo that takes away Shadow's alien powers because they're fucking cowards. They can't claim to not want to fuck up chronology because Shadow gets a Forces level and thus must go into Forces (two games after Generations) knowing it will come to pass!

Also for all the hype he's got, Ian Flynn is either being constrained massively or isn't living up to it; despite being a handful of hours long and not really doing much, Shadow Generations still manages to have weird moments where it feels like plot threads were chopped out or were brought up for the reference power. Shadow gets the fake emerald from Sonic Adventure 2 at the start and passes it off to Sonic after Sonic rinses him, but that not only means Shadow has the real yellow Chaos Emerald sitting around, he doesn't do much with it. I guess he's using its power as he has a slight golden glow when he's powering up in the final fight, but he doesn't need it to do Chaos Control the way Sonic does and it doesn't factor into anything explicitly. It's a weird thing to add when it doesn't really go anywhere and isn't needed for much; I don't really believe that Shadow needed it to beat Black Doom.

Like, if you were going to bring it into things, surely you would have Shadow use the fake emerald this time to flex on an enemy? There's a fucking cool touch where Metal Overlord, Metal Sonic's final boss superform from Sonic Heroes and Shadow's second boss fight here, will keep moving and sass you for using Chaos Control because he has it too, a real cool "I also move in stopped time" moment; there's also a rad finishing QTE moment in Black Doom's fight where he starts Chaos Control to stop time and you have to hit the button to let Shadow do that same trick Metal Overlord does. Surely you'd make it so Shadow needs an emerald to move in Black Doom's superpowered Chaos Control or something, and he does it with the fake one to mirror Sonic doing Chaos Control for the first time with the fake one?

Or like, given Metal Overlord jeers that Shadow's a fake and a copy of Sonic to cope with being a literal robot copy of Sonic, maybe his powered up state's Chaos Control needs Shadow to use an emerald to move in it, so he does it with the fake emerald and Metal Overlord melts the fuck down when Shadow "the fake" uses a fake emerald to rinse him.

You know, do something with it. Anything. If you didn't want to advance Shadow as a character why centre Black Doom as the villain when Mephiles is right there? In Mephiles' fight he even desperately yells that he will tear his way back into existing, having been erased from the timeline with 06 - why wasn't he the real villain, given his overt time theme and direct connection to Shadow? That one's not on Ian Flynn, that's on Sonic Team and the decisions made to make this game to tie in with the third Sonic movie that's also focusing on Shadow and thus will likely integrate the Black Arms as the real villain in some capacity (and also Venom is real popular at the moment so they can give Shadow symbiote-esque alien fleshy powers), it just, you know, jars.

Any which way Shadow Generations is a fucking great game to play, I just think they have one more game to actually start advancing and developing Sonic plots and characters again before they just get written off entirely. Frontiers was a needed "alignment" moment where not much ultimately happens, and this is an okay display of "We're embracing the things games journalists kept calling cringe because they aren't our audience and never have been", but if they really want to sell this "Sonic has found his footing" thing, they need to step forward.

You don't actually want to become Mario, Sonic Team, you have too much foundational material to become a plotless void that exists as a vehicle for fine platforming. Shadow Generations reaches a gameplay tier superior to that, but you need to bring the whole package up to par.
