Mexico City Recs Part 4: Restaurants
These are based on my time in Mexico City in March 2023
La Chaluperia- Simple place but this is Mexican food at its best, and came recommended by the head chef at my cooking course as his favorite place in the city. Don't miss getting the chalupas with mole, molotes, and tlacoyos. You can get half portions of everything. YUM!
Paradero Conocido- the food here is bright and fresh, and each dish has a twist. Excellent. I had a delicious salad, super refreshing ginger soda, fab mushroom ceviche, and a lovely fish dish. This really is a great place to eat if you are in Centro.
Ticuchi- the place has a sexy vibe and I really wanted to like it. But out of the seven dishes we got only one was spectacular, another two good and the rest not great (too bland or too sweet). Given the caliber of Olivera and the meal I had at Pujol I was quite disappointed. The one spectacular dish, a fish aguachile negro dish, have an insight into how good the meal could have been but wasn’t. They seem to rotate the menu so maybe we just got unlucky.
Azul Condesa- their mole negro really is excellent. I think it’s worth going for that alone. Nothing else was a stand out.
Mux- this is a fabulous place for authentic Mexican food with a team that can give you expert suggestions on what to order (food and mezcals). Every dish we had was stunning, from the tetetlas and their salas de mesas, to the adobo, to their moles. Fabulous.
Ciena- tasty, good quality ingredients. Solid meal but not too exciting.
Campobaja- I was really underwhelmed by the seafood here. Not worth it.
Contramar- As delicious as ever- the seafood is just great, and the tuna tostada continues to utterly delicious. They hold so many tables open for walk-ins that you shouldn’t be discouraged by not being able to get a booking.
Maximo Bistro- I preferred it on this second visit, as compared to my first time, which was at the old location. The food is largely European, which is far less interesting to me, but there are some killer Mexican dishes on the menu, and the quesabirria is just spectacular. I would go there again and again for that.
Pasillo de Humo- tasty clean dishes, definitely a nice place for a meal.
Tetetlan- This place is well worth a visit if you are coming from a tour of Casa Pedregal, and the space is really cool. Food is good, I liked the tuna and watermelon tostada very much.
Bar Montejo- This is a fun spot, with a great cantina vibe. They are famous for their cochinita pibil (I really dont think its that great compared to some other spots), but I loved the mushrooms roasted with chilis.
Rosetta- The food here is fantastic, elevated Mexican blended perfectly with European. I was much more impressed than I had expected to me.

Best Restaurants In Mexico
1.El Turix El Turix excels in the cochinita pibil department—pork rubbed with achiote and citrus, buried underground and slowly smoke-roasted. The meat is topped with pickled purple onion and served on panuchos (lightly fried tortillas stuffed with black beans), tacos, or tortas. (Note that the scarlet-colored achiote seed dyes the whole lot an electric powered orange, so be cautious no longer to stain your garments whilst eating.) Consider this the best location for a speedy lunch in Polanco.
2.Contramar The artsy-upper crust of the La Condesa neighborhood, hangers-on following the scene, businessmen on prolonged lunches, and a smattering of travelers fill out the eating room at Contramar. You'll wholly recognize why lunch is the most important—and longest—meal of the day in Mexico City when you come here: By two P.M. on Fridays, the brandy and rosé begin flowing and a informal meal turns into more than one rounds of meals and drink, smoke breaks on the sidewalk, an ordinary party to kick off the weekend.
3.Quintonil While Pujol lengthy reigned as the quintessential fancy meal for site visitors to Mexico City, Quintonil's Mexican cooking deserves at least as plenty party for its robust feel of location and cuisine. A nine-course tasting menu showcases indigenous Mexican ingredients: corn, beans, squash, chiles, and mushrooms, alongside with a few meat dishes. You can additionally order à la carte if you do not favor to commit the time and cash required for the tasting menu. Desserts, like a cheese flan with celeriac ice cream, shine.
4.Pasillo de Humo Pasillo de Humo is placed upstairs in the newish Mercado Parian, a multi-puesto meals corridor in the coronary heart of Condesa. The focal point right here is on small snacks like plantain croquettes dunked into crimson mole, common crispy flatbread tlayudas with stringy Oaxacan cheese and grilled beef, and pan de yema to go with the warm chocolate.
5.La Docena Save for the shrimp po'boy, it is tough to see why La Docena refers to itself as a New Orleans-inspired oyster bar. No matter—the seafood is clean and there may be adequate cured ham to please everyone. There's solely one dessert on the menu: a molten chocolate cake with banana and ice cream. It's top notch on a late Sunday afternoon when you prefer to sit down outdoor and for larger companies on their way for a night time out.

full list of restaurants/cafe etc we visited in Mexico City
Day 1 dinner at Páramo - taco place, was pretty decent - there might be better places, but this one was close to our hotel and we were exhausted from travelling
Day 2 brunch at Chilpa - chilaquiles were good but gotta eat them fast or they get soggy
Day 2 dinner at Pujol - this is the insanely expensive tasting menu place. its trad mexican dishes but they made it like super fancy. they have a 3100 day aged mole
Day 3 brunch at Matcha Mío Café - REALLY GOOD, stand out for sandwiches and decent matcha lattes
Day 3 dinner at Mi Compa Chava Marisquería - this is the seafood place to die for, order the black sauce ceviche and grilled shrimp. we also had a grilled-fish-of-the-day that was good
Day 4 brunch at Dulce Condesa - cute little bakery, we got some sandwiches and baked goods and coffee
Day 4 dinner at Contramar - this was another seafood place, we got the grilled octopus which was SUPER GOOD, and scallop toastadas, and fried tuna balls
went to mexico city with my friends and googled "best restaurant in mexico city", results giving pujol, so we made a reservation for a $300/person tasting menu. it was so fucking good like i would drink their green mole sauce as a smoothie if they let me.
however the best restaurant imo was actually a dingy little seafood place that had plastic chairs and looked like a cafeteria. insanely good ceviche in this black sauce and grilled shrimp that was to die for. we found it by looking up seafood places and someone's comment was 'dont go here go to this place instead its better and cheaper' and they were right.

Seafood centric menu
Loved the grilled fish with two sauces.
Would skip the strawberry meringue cake though... the coconut flan was much more authentic and tasty

Possibly the most Instagrammable and most Instagrammed dish at #Contramar. The grilled fish with dueling sauces, aka pescado a la talla Contramar. One half rubbed with a red adobo sauce and the other half in a parsley sauce. It was as good as it looks. Surprisingly, I was a bit more partial to the green team. #seafood #mexicocity #cdmx #メキシコ #ごちそうさまでした #mexicanfood #メキシコ料理 #美味しい #gastronogram #foodbeast #forkyeah #instayum #instafood #foodstagram #yahoofood #yougottaeatthis #eater #eatthis #lefooding #foodporn #foodpics #eattheworld #food #foodforthought (at Contramar) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bt6hNXvhxLA/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=znfp0r3c2vt0

GetAwayGang X Mexico City
We love us some Mexico! With Los Angeles being our home base it’s practically a hop, skip and a jump away. As such we jaunt over when possible. In October, we headed to Mexico City for our first Culture Immersion - a series of thoughtfully curated trips that promises exploration of the modern renaissance. Together we dive right in to all that makes a destination wanderlust worthy.
Our 4 day 4 night excursion was robust as can be for our fellow culture vultures. The intimate group arrived to the Airbnb (apparently, the very first CDMX listing) in Chapultapec on a Thursday. They settled in as a welcome supper was being prepared. We had a chance to get acquainted over delicious banana leaf wrapped tamales, chile rellenos, rice & beans. For dessert, we took the group for churros and hot chocolate at El Moro in Condessa. Then had a nice stroll through Parque Mexico. We finished with a restorative yoga class in the shala led by Maria Alana.
Friday morning started on our mats for an energizing flow. Breakfast followed and then Frida! The infamous Casa Azul where artists Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera lived. The (now) museum gives fans a chance to admire their work and have a personal peek at the vibrant compound.
Away from the house, past the gift shop, is a collection dedicated to Kahlo’s wardrobe. This was my favourite part. An eeriness upon entering is felt with the garments and pieces from her unfortunate accident which I think is important to share as it was very much a part of her. Frida’s style sense was otherwise revolutionary in that she often dressed masculine, which at the time was not typical to do. Other times her feminine flare was complimentary to the dresses and jewelry she wore expressing her Latin loving rooted self.
The group reconvened and we went to the local mercados for lunch and some shopping. Blue corn street quesadillas are a must! The tortillas are freshly made to order while Mexican cheese is added and melts your topping of choice such as squash blossom and mushrooms or perhaps you prefer chicharron and asada. Either way be sure to add an horchata or aqua fresca for your beverage and you’re set - all for under $5.
Next stop: Estudio Diego Rivera & Frida Kahlo. This was not only another one of the artist couples creative spaces but also is also sought after as in industrial expression. Their friend and architect, Juan O’Gorman, worked with them to design and build it. Hard to believe that it was said to be an eyesore and had push back from their neighbors at the time. We respectfully disagree.
Returning home in traffic (which is everywhere at all times) seemed like forever but everyone seemed to use the time wisely updating their instagram or getting a brief snooze. We had a chance to wind down and freshen up for dinner at Entremar (Contremar’s sister resto). Two words suffice here: tuna tostadas! Oh and the mezcal cocktails had us opening up more, sharing our personal experience of the day, and laughing to tears saying yabadabbadoobie! Most called it a night from there but a couple of us wanted to keep the part going. And we did just that at Jules Basement, a speakeasy bar boasting a good blend of mixology from the bartenders and tunes from the dj that had us boogie-ing.
Day two (better known as the day we did e v e r y t h i n g) started off with a morning urban hike to Chapultepec Park. With our Gypsy Jetsetter yoga mats in tow we went from city streets to lush forest in under 30 minutes - impressive! We found a perfect spot to do a quick moving meditation at the bottom of a castle. This was not officially approved by the park so we took a chance and it was thrilling to say the least.
With yoga brain taking over, more cardio was calling us to walk up the hill to the opulent Bosque de Chapultepec. A hidden gem that is of historic value as much as it is ecological, recreational, and cultural. The unparalleled views and terraces allowed for an elevated perspective of the city. A bar was starting to be set for our guests of what to expect next.
More shopping awaited them at La Ciudadela. Everyone went their own way to explore and haggle with the plethora of vendors and artisans selling their hand crafted goods and traditional folk art. Perfect stop for souvenirs and such.
With little delay and empty stomachs off to lunch we went to the highly anticipated chef’s tasting experience at PUJOL. The restaurant that has made its way to countless world’s best lists where chef Enrique Olvera cooks up ever changing dishes with Mexican roots at center stage.
Lucky for our guests we arranged to have the private room which looked out the the rest of the space. The staff was extremely attentive and the service was top notch. Course after course was plated with simple elegance. And while we thought we were getting 6 we ended up with 5 more - compliments of the chef!
And as if that was not enough, we had another surprise up our sleeves....a meet and greet kitchen and garden tour. You best believe we left with smiles ear to ear and beyond full of joy (and food!). A well spent fanciful 3 hours indeed.
Even though I’m sure no one would have been opposed to a post meal nap, there was more on the agenda. Mind you, this was still just Saturday. To keep things interesting, Lucha Libre (Mexican wrestling) was the curve ball planned for the next activity. The wrestler’s masks, outfits, and fighting made for hilarious entertainment. The night ended with a quick stop to the city’s cultural center, Palacio de Bellas Artes.
Sunday was dedicated to a day trip adventure to the pyramids which is only about an hour northeast of the city. The history of Teotihuacan is fascinating to witness in all it’s massive steepness which we climbed up, clowned around on top of and did some yoga too.
Brunch in a cave anyone? La Gruta is the place. The wait list was long but went by quick and the menu was actually more than basic so this had our foodie friends satisfied. Performers danced and sang traditional folk numbers which was an unexpected bonus.
At this point in the trip, it’s safe to say appetites were getting smaller by the hour and energy was depleting a slight. All in perfect timing as we were nearing the end. With that said, the rest of the day was kept easy with more free time to reflect, rest, and restore.
Monday came and our guests departed but not without yet another meal. For the farewell we bonded the way we started....over tamales except this time at Chef Olvera’s latest venture Molina El Pujol a casual tortilleria cafe because let’s be honest, one can never have enough Pujol in their life. Scrumptious enough to motivate everyone to buy a couple dozen tortillas (fresh to order) and a jar of salsa to savor the memories we shared. But seriously, from the bottom of our hearts we could not have had a better group for this first immersion. We thank you for being curious, open, supportive, and delightful!
Maria and I sent our lovelies off with hugs. The impression made with a whirlwind of cultural holistic curation is one we hold dear. Feeling proud and accomplished of our work we stayed a couple extra days to celebrate. The following are some spots we checked out:
Blanco Yoga in Roma Norte
Cafe Nin *nostalgic as Anais herself
Panaderia Rosetta *do yourself and get the fig croissant!
Bosques Chocolate Libreria *nestled in Cordoba 25 a cool collective of creative showrooms and shops
Xinú an elevated perfumery with botanic experiential concept in Polanco
Casa Luis Barragan *contemporary architecture which dreams are made of. Be sure to go to the garden across the street.
Archivo *space for design and architecture rotating collections and exhibitions
and just a few more for ya....
Rosetta *fine italian fare
Los Loosers *vegan goodness
Parker Y Lennox *live jazz speakeasy bar and resto in Juarez
Limontour *cocktail bar that with stylish drinks
