Navy Birthday
On October 13th, the United States Navy observes its birthday every year.
The United States Navy (USN) is the naval warfare service branch of the United States Armed Forces and one of the seven uniformed services of the United States. The U.S. Navy is currently the largest, most powerful navy in the world, with the highest combined battle fleet tonnage. The service has over 340,000 personnel on active duty and more than 71,000 in the Navy Reserve.
With only two ships and a crew of eighty men, the Continental Army was born on October 13, 1775. The decision of the Continental Congress set the Continental Navy on course to carry arms to the British army, not to defend against it. However, these two ships and crew represent the birth of the United States Navy.
Throughout the Revolutionary War, their importance grew. Today, the United States maintains 40 naval bases across the country, including the world’s largest Naval Station Norfolk, in Norfolk, Virginia.
Below the sea, submarines became a part of the Navy during World War II. While experiments began in the late 1800s and during the Civil War, they did not become a large part of the Navy inventory until World War II. At that point, subs became necessary for surveillance and rescue, even though they were also armed.
With the advent of the airplane, the Navy became vital stations for the Airforce as well. As a result, the Navy modified ships into floating landing strips. Today, joint Naval and Airbases such as Pearl Harbor-Hickam provided necessary fleets of sea and air defense.
NAVY BIRTHDAY HISTORY
On October 13, 1775, the Continental Congress authorized the first American naval force. Thus began the long and prestigious heritage of the United States Navy. Between 1922 and 1972, the Navy celebrated its birthday on October 27th, the date of Theodore Roosevelt’s birth. The Navy League of the United States designated the date due to Roosevelt’s foresight and vision in elevating the U.S. Navy into a premier force. Regardless of when the Navy observed its birth, the celebration has always been one of pride.
The change to October 13 was seen as a more relevant date in line with the first official action legislating a navy. Since 1972, the Navy has officially recognized October 13th as the official date of its birth.

On the morning of 11 September 2001 the entire continental US was being defended by just 14 military aircraft.
Republicans claim they are better at defense. That is entirely bullshit. What actually happens is that they start wars after a preventable slip-up which leaves the United States vulnerable. They hope people pay more attention to the following wars than to the initial slip-up.
When George W. Bush became president after the disputed 2000 election, his main defense focus was reviving Ronald Reagan’s discredited star wars missile program. His mindset was stuck in the Cold War and he surrounded himself with Cold War retreads like Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld. Bush ignored the increasing risk of terrorism and even demoted his counterterrorism czar Richard Clarke.
So on September 11th the Bush administration was unable to defend the United States against 19 hijackers armed only with box cutters and utility knives.
And there were just 14 fighter jets scattered around the continental US to deal with any air defense emergency that morning – as the BBC reported. (emphasis added)
Huntress Control contacted Otis Airforce Base in Cape Cod - they had two of just four fighter pilots on alert covering the North Eastern United States.
In fact, the threat of an attack was considered so small that the entire US mainland was being defended by only 14 planes.
As the first plane hit the World Trade Center the two F15 fighter pilots were taking off, they were still 153 miles from New York.
The pilots flew supersonically and headed for New York, but the US Air Force was unable to identify the second plane. At 0902 the second plane struck, the F15 pilots were just 70 miles out.
One of the pilots said: "It was like you were in the middle of a bad B-movie, flying over Central Park chasing down planes and watching the towers burning."
Other fighter jets were found. However there were not enough planes to adequately patrol the skies immediately. Some had to be diverted from training missions and some of those were not even armed.
Colonel Marr said they had to contemplate launching their own suicide missions, using the fighters to crash into the hijacked planes.
He said: "It was very possible that they would have been asked to give their lives themselves to try to prevent further attacks if need be."
So all that may have been possible for a while was to have Air Force pilots conduct suicide missions by crashing into hijacked airliners to keep them from killing people on the ground.
Fortunately that was unnecessary. Every non-military and non-police aircraft in US airspace was ordered to land. In under three hours there was not a single civilian aircraft in US skies; all civilian aircraft remained grounded for several more days.
Defense equals protection. On 9/11 George W. Bush failed to protect Americans in the US from very preventable mass attacks.
The 2002 BBC documentary about what went on in US airspace on 9/11 “Clear the Skies” is still available.
youtube
BONUS: The Air Force pilots identified only by their call signs “Duff” and “Nasty” in the BBC docu spoke with WBUR in Boston in 2011. They are Lt. Col. Dan Nash and Col. Tim Duffy. In some ways they were the first of the first responders on 9/11.

On June 6, 1944, more than 160,000 Allied troops landed along a 50-mile stretch of heavily-fortified French coastline, to fight Nazi Germany on the beaches of Normandy, France. Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower called the operation a crusade in which, “we will accept nothing less than full victory.” More than 5,000 Ships and 13,000 aircraft supported the D-Day invasion, and by day’s end, the Allies gained a foot-hold in Continental Europe. The cost in lives on D-Day was high. More than 9,000 Allied Soldiers were killed or wounded, but their sacrifice allowed more than 100,000 Soldiers to begin the slow, hard slog across Europe, to defeat Adolf Hitler’s crack troops. #lestweforget #dday #normandy #rangers #rltw #omahabeach #wwii #wwiihistory #army #airforce #navy #armyaircorps #fubar (at Omaha Beach) https://www.instagram.com/p/CBGmspoAbeU/?igshid=no2jawdwxoji

Nancy Harkness was born on February 14, 1914 in Houghton, Michigan, the daughter of a wealthy physician. She developed an intense interest in aviation at an early age. At 16 she took her first flight and earned her pilot’s license within a month. Although she went to all the right schools, including Milton Academy in Massachusetts and Vassar in New York, she was restless and adventurous. At Vassar she earned extra money taking students for rides in an airplane she rented from a nearby airport.
In 1936 she married Robert Love, an Air Corps Reserve Major. They built their own successful Boston-based aviation company, Inter City Aviation, for which Nancy was a pilot. She also flew for the Bureau of Air Commerce. In 1937 and 1938 she flew as a test pilot, performing safety tests on various aircraft modifications and innovations. In one project she served as a test pilot on the new three-wheeled landing gear, which subsequently became standard on most planes. In another, she helped mark water towers with town names as a navigational aid for pilots. In May, 1940, soon after the Second World War broke out in Europe, Nancy Love wrote to Lt. Col. Robert Olds. who was in charge of establishing a Ferrying Command within the Army Air Corps, that she had found 49 excellent women pilots, who each had more than a thousand flying hours and could help transport planes from factories to bases. Lt. Col. Olds took the suggestion to Gen. Hap Arnold, Chief of Staff, who turned it down. In 1942, Robert Love was called to active duty in Washington, D. C. as the Deputy Chief of Staff of the Ferry Command. His wife accompanied him to his assignment and soon landed a civilian post with the Air Transport Command (ATC) Ferrying Division Operations Office in Baltimore, Maryland. She piloted her own airplane on her daily commute from the couple’s home in Washington, D. C., which caught the attention of Col. William Tunner, who was heading up the domestic wing of the Ferrying Division and was, at that moment, scouring the country for skilled pilots. Nancy Love convinced Col. Tunner that the idea of using experienced women pilots to supplement the existing pilot force was a good one. He then asked the 28 year old Love to write up a proposal for a women’s ferrying division. Within a few months, she had recruited 29 experienced female pilots to join the newly created Women’s Auxiliary Ferry Squadron (WAFS). Nancy Love became their Commander. In September, 1942, the women pilots began flying at New Castle Army Air Field, Wilmington, Delaware, under ATC’s 2nd Ferrying Group.By June, 1943, Nancy Love was commanding four different squadrons of WAFS at Love Field in Texas, New Castle in Delaware, Romulus in Michigan and Long Beach in California. The WAFS’ number had greatly increased because of the addition of graduates of the Women’s Flying Training Detachment (WFTD) at Avenger Field, Sweetwater, Texas. On August 5, 1943 Love’s ferrying squadrons merged with the WFTD and became a single entity: the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP). Nancy Love was named as the Executive for all WASP ferrying operations. Under her command, female pilots flew almost every type military aircraft then in the Army Air Force’s arsenal, and their record of achievement proved remarkable. Between September, 1942 and December, 1944, the WASP delivered 12,650 aircraft of 77 different types. Over fifty percent of the ferrying of high-speed pursuit type aircraft in the continental United States was carried out by WASP, under the leadership of Nancy Love. Her personal contributions included some equally remarkable accomplishments. She was the first woman to be checked out in a P-51. By March, 1943, she was also proficient in fourteen other types of military aircraft. She was the first woman in U.S. military history to fly the B-25, flying it coast-to-coast in record time, and was one of the first two women to check out in a B-17. The WASP were disbanded on 20 December 1944. At the end of the war, Nancy Love and her husband had the unique distinction of being decorated simultaneously. He received the Distinguished Service Medal, and she was awarded the Air Medal for her ‘Operational leadership in the successful training and assignment of over 300 qualified women fliers in the flying of advanced military aircraft’. After the war, Nancy Love became the mother of three daughters, but she continued as an aviation industry leader, as well as a champion for recognition as military veterans for the women who had served as WASP. Nancy Harkness Love died on October 22, 1976. Among the things she left behind was a box she had kept for more than 30 years. Inside was a handwritten list of women pilots she had compiled in 1940 and clippings and photographs of each of the women who had died under her command. Her job had not been easy, but the love and respect she received from the WAFS and WASP she commanded during WWII is indisputable.

multiples of 10 for the cute asks! :D
maddie i LOVE you
10) do you sleep on your back, side, or stomach?
primarily my stomach and side- though i roll and flip around a lot while falling asleep and even after im unconscious whoooops
20) what’s your favorite eye color?
tbh im SUCH a sucker for green eyes like..... the Mystery... the Majesty...... the Magic.... i just find them beautiful and enchanting
30) think of it: have you ever been truly scared?
i have anxiety so i live in a pretty constant state of stress and near-panic but like. honest to god full on terror? probably not, just bc im too anxious and straightlaced to do anything that’s going to put me in the situation to be that level of scared
but like. fear and the concept of “scared” is so personal and subjective, man, it really depends on you and your personal experiences and other peoples’ relationship/s with fear shouldn’t inform or negate your own
40) think of a piece of jewelry you own: what’s it’s story? does it have any meaning to you?
i have a couple really important and sentimental pieces of jewelry! the most important one is probably a charm necklace i have that i’ve curated over a few years; it has five charms on it- a little star charm given to me by a friend, a deathly hallows symbol i got from my parents, a comedy/tragedy masks charm (also from my parents), a cherry blossom charm i got in Arlington, DC, when we went to have my grandparents’ memorial service there after they passed, and a thin metal ribbon charm that reads ‘the journey is the reward’ along it that i got from my aunt and uncle for my 16th (i think) birthday, right before my uncle passed away
all the charms are super important and symbolic and sentimental to me- especially the last two in the list- and i wear it pretty regularly, if not daily
50) what’s an odd thing you collect?
i have a huge collection of decorative spoons, most of which i inherited from my grandmother, who collected them herself, there’s this big flat display board they hang from that’s on my wall in my room that used to hang in my grandparents’ house and i always loved to examine all the different spoons hanging there when i was little- they’re all different shapes and sizes and designs and most are old and/or from specific places from all around the world that my grandmother got herself while travelling (my grandfather was in the us airforce and they lived in airbases all around the world and the continental US when my dad was little) and those she recieved as gifts from friends and family’s travels- i have a few ive gotten or been gifted myself, and i think its a really cool piece of art and history and family that i get to hang on my wall!
I also have a shit ton of mugs and plan on collecting as many cool and ridiculous ones as i can, ideally getting one from every trip i go on in the future, as a way to memorialize them
60) do you like poetry? what are some of your faves?
yes! i love poetry! i always enjoyed when we did it at school and i dabble a little in writing it myself- top pieces off the top of my head- Do Not Stand At My Grave And Weep, Mary Elizabeth Frye; Tell The Truth But Tell It Slant, Emily Dickinson
i know embarrassingly little poetry off the top of my head, frankly, but i always enjoy reading and writing it (though i don’t know how good my poetry is)
70) have you ever used a ouija board?
i have not but me and my [former] best friend got REALLY into ghosts/spirits/the occult/etc for like two months in the seventh grade and tried to hold a seance in my house- my mom overheard us and banged on a wall outside my room and managed to convince all of us that it was a ghost for at LEAST 15 minutes
80) what color are your bedroom walls? did you choose that color? if so, why?
my bedroom walls are a lovely light periwinkle (blue/purple)! I didn’t choose the color, its what my parents painted my room when they made my nursery, but frankly i love it
90) talk about your one of you favorite cities.
i haven’t traveled much, and even less to big cities so i can’t really speak to having a favorite or not- but i visited NYC last summer with my mom and- like every other dreamy art girl in the US- fell in love and absolutely adored it, so. there’s that.
100) if you were presented with two buttons, one that allows you to go 5 years into the past, the other 5 years into the future, which one would you press? why?
the one that goes into the future, undoubtedly. ive taught myself not to look back on the past with regret- my actions, whatever they might have been, got me to where I am now, which is something to be thankful for, and there’s nothing to be gained by wishing you could change the past, if you ask me- and i’ve always kind of wished to jump forward to the indeterminate time in my life where things settle in and i can start living; though, i suppose, that’s more about how you live your life than when you are in your life, huh?
thank you so so so so sooo much for these asks love!!
send me cute asks!!

And the responses to Trump’s 4th of July speech pore in, just like the rain that poured down on it.
Freedom loving Americans find it regrettable that not a single classic movie from liberal Hollywood depicts when the George Washington Army successfully manned the amperts, ranned the ramparts, and took over the airports. https://t.co/6jsiyOwbf8

Trump’s misreading of basic facts of US history he appeared to encounter for the first time on the teleprompter led him to claim that Congress named the Continental Army “after” George Washington, who defeated Cornwallis “of” Yorktown, and the US army took over “airports” in 1814 https://t.co/CMYhbGwqeC

Hp dmi tool 2018
The initial production design, 75 built for RTAF (24) and RAAF (51).
CT/4A: Powered by a 210 hp Continental piston engine.
The second example the only single control CT/4 built, presented by NZAI to the Thai King, later used by the Royal Thai Police.
CT/4: Two prototypes, the first example was used by AESL to develop the CT/4 to meet RAAF requirements, retained by AESL/NZAI until NZAI bankruptcy in 1982.
The last CT/4 produced so far has been a CT/4E built for use as a company demonstrator, and in 2013 it was shown at the Airshow at Durban, South Africa.Ī total of 155 aircraft had been built by 2008. In 20 a further 8 CT/4Es were delivered to the Royal Thai Air Force to bring the total of RTAF CT/4Es to 24. Two CT/Es were delivered to the Singapore Youth Flying Club in 2002. One new-build CT/4E was built for a private Israeli owner in 1999. Many former RAAF and RNZAF aircraft are owned by private pilots and by companies contracted to provide training for airforces or airlines. In Australia the type is commonly known as the plastic parrot, (a reference to its original gaudy RAAF colour scheme-the aircraft is, in fact, of all-aluminium construction). It is currently in use with the RTAF and was formerly used by the RAAF (until primary training was sub contracted) and by the Royal New Zealand Air Force until replaced by the Beechcraft T-6C. The CT/4 proved to be an agile and capable military training aircraft. Both nations used the CT/4E to replace their earlier model CT/4A and B.
Neither attracted production orders at the time but, in 1998, CT/4E production commenced with orders for the Royal New Zealand Air Force for 13 and Royal Thai Air Force for 16. In 1991, in an attempt to win a lucrative United States Air Force contract, two new developments of the CT/4 airframe were flown-the CT/4C turboprop and the CT/4E with a 300 hp piston engine, a three-bladed propeller, 100 mm longer fuselage and wing attachments moved rearwards. This caused financial difficulties for the manufacturer, which led to the firm re-emerging as the Pacific Aerospace Corporation.įor several years Airtrainer production ceased, although the type remained nominally available for orders. These aircraft were then embargoed by the New Zealand government after being built and spent six years in storage before being sold to the Royal Australian Air Force. Breco was discovered to be a sanctions busting front for the Rhodesian Air Force. The CT/4B was ordered by the Royal New Zealand Air Force (19) and 14 were ordered ostensibly by a Swiss company, Breco Trading Co, on behalf of a Swiss flying club. The 64th machine was the first CT/4B, with detail improvements, mostly in instrumentation. The type was then selected as the primary trainer for the Royal Australian Air Force. Production was launched against an order for 24 from the Royal Thai Air Force. Two prototypes were built, and on 1 March 1973 AESL became New Zealand Aerospace Industries Ltd. The CT/4 prototype first flew on 23 February 1972. Structurally there are changes to the skin and upgrading of the four longerons in the fuselage from sheet metal to extrusions. Externally the CT/4 differs from the Airtourer and Aircruiser designs by its larger engine and the bubble canopy-designed in an aerofoil shape. AESL's chief designer, P W C Monk, based the new aircraft on the stronger airframe of the Aircruiser. In 1971, the Royal Australian Air Force had a requirement for the replacement of the CAC Winjeels used as basic trainers at RAAF Point Cook. Pacific Aerospace Corporation predecessor, AESL, derived the CT/4 from the earlier four-seat prototype Victa Aircruiser, itself a development of the original Victa Airtourer two-seat light tourer, 172 of which had been built in Australia from 1961 to 1966 before the rights to the Airtourer and Aircruiser were sold to the New Zealand company AESL, which built a total of 80 Airtourers at its factory at Hamilton in the 1970s.

Facts you didn't know about URA defender Nyakoojo
Benjamin Nyakoojo displays a man of the match plaque after a Uganda Premier League match against Sports Club Villa A lion’s share of sportsmen world over are nurtured from the grass-root part by way of nicely deliberate coaching periods. A fraction choose up the interest at the latter stage, most get trained and turn out to be perfectionists within the varied games undertaken. Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) Football Club defender Benjamin Nyakoojo will boldly attest he started playing serious football while in senior five at the St Mary’s Boarding Secondary School, Kitende. “I kicked off my football career at St. Mary’s Kitende SSS from 2015 to 2016. Later, that year I was was promoted to the senior team, Vipers SC where I instantly became a force and got first team football.” Nyakoojo recounts. Before that, Nyakoojo was studying at Nyakasura SSS in Fort Portal where football was never a priority. It was during the La Mennais tournament as he was featuring for St Edwards Bukuumi where he was spotted by David Bbaale, then a coach at St Mary’s Boarding SS Kitende. It was during the Le Mennais tournament hosted by St Henry’s Kitovu where I was scouted by coach Bbaale (David). Interestingly, I was playing for St Edwards Bukuumi. So, I was admitted at St Mary’s Boarding SSS, Kitende and the rest is now history. Benjamin Nyakoojo, URA Football Club defender

The Washington Monument is an obelisk within the National Mall in Washington, D.C., built to commemorate George Washington, once commander-in-chief of the Continental Army (1775–1784) in the American Revolutionary War and the first President of the United States (1789–1797). Located almost due east of the Reflecting Pool and the Lincoln Memorial, the monument, made of marble, granite, and bluestone gneiss, is both the world's tallest predominantly stone structure and the world's tallest obelisk, standing 554 feet 7 11⁄32 inches (169.046 m) tall according to the U.S. National Geodetic Survey (measured 2013–14) or 555 feet 5 1⁄8 inches (169.294 m) tall according to the National Park Service (measured 1884). Construction of the monument began in 1848 and was halted for a period of 23 years, from 1854 to 1877 due to a lack of funds, a struggle for control over the Washington National Monument Society, and the American Civil War. Although the stone structure was completed in 1884, internal ironwork, the knoll, and installation of memorial stones were not completed until 1888. A difference in shading of the marble, visible approximately 150 feet (46 m) or 27% up, shows where construction was halted and later resumed with marble from a different source. The original design was by Robert Mills (1781–1855) of South Carolina, but he did not include his proposed colonnade due to a lack of funds, proceeding only with a bare obelisk. The cornerstone was laid on July 4, 1848; the first stone was laid atop the unfinished stump on August 7, 1880; the capstone was set on December 6, 1884; the completed monument was dedicated on February 21, 1885; and officially opened October 9, 1888. #SayTheirNames #NeverForget #NeverForgotten #flagsofhonorescorts #rollcallflag #projectrollcall #america #armedforces #fallen #fallenheroes #freedom #heroes #honor #merica #respect #salutethefallen #soldiers #supportourtroops #tactical #usa #military #warriors #army #usveterans #usmilitary #airforce #mission_22 #22aday #veterans Projectrollcall.org https://www.instagram.com/p/CLFS0cYHfYW/?igshid=vad8wbyt0dms

Pursuing LLM from abroad, working in Europe- Germany, London- A Webinar Brief
This summary is written by Sharanya Ghosh, from Symbiosis Law School, Noida.
The Guest Speaker: Abhijit Narayan completed his senior secondary education from Airforce Bal Bharti School and went on to study Political Science. Later, he picked up law and studied at Campus Law Centre (Delhi University) before pursuing his LLM in Corporate Law from New York University School of Law. After that, he returned to India and worked as a corporate lawyer for a few years. However, he wanted to go abroad and thus began working in Germany. Today he is Foreign Counsel; Head of India Desk and Middle East Desk for Continental Europe at Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe LLP.
The Host: Ramanuj Mukherjee is an alumnus of National University of Judicial Sciences, Kolkata. He is currently the CEO of LawSikho and the co-founder of iPleaders. His previous work experience includes being a part of the Private Equity and M&A Team at Trilegal, Mumbai.
Why should I pursue my LLM from Europe?
The real question here is why you want to pursue LLM in the first place. After you have answered that, you may consider the fact that the standard of education in European nations is very high and the cost of living and studying much lower as compared to the United States. Thus, pursuing LLM from Europe can be very useful.
How realistic is it to want to work in a European country abroad?
Anti-immigration sentiment may exist in a few countries but even otherwise, finding a job in Europe in the legal field is not easy. Some people don’t go for LLM directly after graduation. Some people study LLM only because they want to work abroad. The supply of LLM graduates is much more than demand LLM graduates globally. One reason why international law firms have few Indian lawyers because they are expected to handle India related transactions.
What are the chances of getting a job after I get my degree in LLM?
The chances of getting a job after getting an LLM depends on the market demand. It is important to develop contacts and understand the client requirement. It is very important to understand that the client is not coming to you for a lesson in law but because they seek solutions.
A lot of people are interested in working abroad. What are some of the pros and cons of working in Europe?
There is a long list of benefits of working abroad. The stipend is decent, depending from place to place, there is a great experience and exposure and with the technological advancements of the world, you can stay connected with your family back home. There aren’t many cons of working or studying abroad according to Mr. Narayan.
What is the situation of Indian lawyers abroad?
Several Indians tend to go back home since it is not easy to grow in an international firm. Even if you become a partner, it is difficult to be accepted unless you build a brilliant case. In fact, even today, there are few Indian equity partners in German and other European firms. This, however, should be looked at as an opportunity instead of a downside.
Some students face the issue of language barriers. How should they deal with that?
The best solution to a language barrier is to learn it. It is not a prerequisite in a world where English and other global languages do exist. However, it is an essential skill that one may develop to add value to their own profile.
How long does it take to learn a language?
Depending on the language and its difficulty level, it can take around two years to become fluent in speaking a European language. It looks good on your resume and around three years of studying the language, one may even be able to use it comfortably in the business process.
When should you start learning the language? How do you choose which language to go for?
Choosing the language depends on your interest level and the field and country you want to work in. As for when you should start learning it, the earlier the better.
Why should I pick up a language?
Most people feel more comfortable speaking in their domestic languages and if you are able to interact with them through it, it adds value to your image. Whether you are into litigation or corporate, if you have clients from that foreign country, you can speak to them in that language. This is a major benefit. It opens doors for you across countries and creates more job opportunities for you.
Does learning a foreign language help if I plan to stay in India after my LLM?
Yes. There are firms in India that work across countries and thus they have language desks. You can approach such firms to join their teams. Not only that, it allowed you to collaborate with people and widen your circles.
What should I do in order to land a job in a foreign law firm?
These law firms will look at what you bring to the table and thus it becomes important to reach out to the right people, such as lawyers in a firm who have worked on cases related to India. Cover letters are an essential feature of your application and need to be created in a way that the person reading it feels like it was created for him alone.
What kind of a track record should I have before I apply for a job?
Here it becomes important to put yourself in the shoes of the person reading your application, since they must be receiving multiple applications. What sets you apart? What value will you add to the firm? A cover letter becomes so important that you may be rejected based on that alone.
How do I build my connections and set myself apart?
You should think out of the box in this situation. You need to work on your profile and ensure that you come across as a professional. You should also be ready to face rejections from Universities and job applications. You only need one job to kickstart your career and a lot is riding on your job profile.
Where in Europe should I go for an LLM?
Any European country such as Germany, France and Spain offer great education at subsidised rates. The quality of education is superior and the overall cost is less as compared to the United States (and also the United Kingdom if we look specifically at the European Union). Getting an education in big cities will help you intern at big law firms too.
Why is it better to work for a while after my graduation and before I go for my LLM?
Working before going for LLM is quite helpful in getting a scholarship. You may even be able to work in India that have connections with those respective countries, such as Germany. If you plan to settle abroad, you may join Indian companies based abroad or even foreign companies that work with Indian organisations.
Some questions asked by the audience and students of the LawSikho community:
How do I write a good Statement of Purpose?
A good statement of purpose generally does not have a single formula. It is one way of connecting with a person. Statements of Purpose have word limits when it comes to law universities and it is important to condense your thoughts in a sensible manner. Mr. Narayan also suggested that universities while looking for unique messages still keep an eye out for some clichés.

Is going abroad for a PhD in law a good idea?
Going for a PhD in law is a good decision because not only does it ensure that you get a decent stipend, it also enables you to connect with people. Your references increase and it propels your career forward. It is important to get on the Internet and do some research first, though.
I’ve been working for four years. Is it too late to consider going for an LLM? Will it add any value to my resume?
Mr. Narayan mentioned that if you want to pursue an LLM you should definitely consider it. Not only does it add to your resume, it also gives you more exposure and improves your overall profile. Mr. Mukherjee also added that it depends on the field that you would like to enter as well.
What are some tips you can give for planning an education abroad, especially financially?
If you are a law student who is planning to go abroad, it is very important to add to your resume. You need to participate in moot court competitions, go for internships, write papers and publications and most importantly, it is essential to maintain a good quality of these activities. You also need a good plan that you can keep in mind. This might even help you land a scholarship.
Even if I get an LLM, generally law students are required to get local qualifications. How does that affect my education? Does LLM really help?
It is important to first identify which field of law you want to enter and what you want to pursue. Depending on that, you should choose your specialisation and plan for any local qualifications that you will need. Again, based on what your field of law is all about, you can go for both an LLM and cover the local qualifications.
If I’m already enrolled in the LLM programme of a good University. What is the next step to get a job?
Mr. Narayan says that you must utilise your time well. Getting good grades during your LLM is essential if you want to land a good job. You should also utilise your time while in the programme to go for informational interviews and try to have conversations with people instead of looking at jobs immediately. This will help you build your contacts and your profile.
Can it be a problem is a person is only a foreign legal consultant?
It is usually not a problem to simply be a foreign legal consultant. Most big firms internationally use standardised language in their work and overall it is a global job. However, if you really want to build a career, you should strive to become a partner in a firm. For this, local qualifications become extremely important.
Should I go for a specialised LLM or a general LLM?
It is best to go for a specialised LLM. You can also cover different courses under a specialisation and focusing on one field helps you gain proper exposure and a greater understanding.
What steps should I go for in the future if I have studied under an International Human Rights LLM programme in the United Kingdom?
It becomes essential here to know what kind of a field you are going for. You may return to India and go into litigation while keeping in mind this field. You may go into teaching. Otherwise, you should try to get a job at the United Nations and at well-known large NGOs.
I have a work experience of over three years and had applied to a few German Universities for LLM. However, what with the pandemic, I am unsure about the admission currently.
To this, Mr. Narayan responded by saying that it would be best to wait for a year or so before pursuing an LLM abroad. Since it is a trying time, it is best not to take a risk. Even so, you should go for it or defer it by a year.
Do top universities in the Europe have top placement cells like we have in India?
It’s the same in Europe, they have internships and also collaborate with Indian colleges. There are firms there that even hire international interns from time to time.
