California zoo accessibility data dump
I just recently got back from a short (and fully covid-cautious) zoo road trip in Oregon and California, and wanted to share my notes re: accessibility at the facilities I visited. I'll get this all integrated into the spreadsheet, too.
Wildlife Safari - Winston, Oregon
This is a large drive-thru safari park with a free walk-about area attached that contains some small exhibits. Guests stay inside their cars the entire drive-thru, although there's at least one place to stop and sit in a gazebo to rest and use the bathroom (porta-potty only). You can pull over to watch animals for longer, and go through multiple times if you missed anything. It's a long drive-thru and there isn't really a good way to truncate the experience if you've got some kind of emergency. The roads are not flat, but they're well maintained and not bumpy.
The walkabout area is very small and contains bathrooms, food options, and other guest services. The paths are mostly concrete and well tended, although you do have to cross the steam train tracks to get to lion/some of the lemur viewing. I believe the Australia walkabout area was also unpaved. There's lots of parking in a big, flat, paved lot.
Sacramento Zoo - Sacramento, CA
This is a very cute, small inner-city facility - a good option if you don't want to try to walk a huge zoo in one day. There's lots of shade from all the plants and a good amount of benches throughout, including picnic tables with shade canopies. The paths are almost entirely flat and paved, with the exception of a boardwalk ramp up to the giraffe feeding and okapi viewing platforms. The cafe has gluten-free and vegetarian listings (maybe vegan?) on their menu. No straws are provided for animal safety, but if you need one, they can give you a reusable curly-straw from the slushies (kinda long and awkward for a normal cup) as an accommodation. They've got both water fountains and water bottle filling stations. Being build in a larger city park and recreation complex, there isn't a dedicated parking lot just for the zoo: the closest is across the street, shared with another attraction, and is kinda small. I've never had issues finding parking when I've gone, but sometimes it does involve a bunch of walking to get to the zoo entrance - if you have mobility or stamina limitations, probably best to get dropped off at the entrance and wait (there are benches).
San Francisco Zoo - San Francisco, CA
The SF Zoo is huge. There's lots of green / garden / swamp space that doesn't have habitats in it, but it means exhibits can be pretty far away, so plan your route accordingly. (Going out to the grizzly bears is the longest loop). Depending on the time of day, there's not always a ton of shade for guests either. There's a decent amount of benches, and quite a few are in decent proximity to animal viewing. After a somewhat long but not steep hill right at the entrance, the paths are all paved and fairly flat. There's a hill going down into/up from the Australia area / kids playground, but it's the only one I really noticed. There's a long elevated boardwalk through the lemur habitats that connects to the top of the new Madagascar construction - if you can't do stairs, as of Spring 2024, that's the only way to get up there to look down on the mandrills or see the top of the fossa habitat. (It's still under construction, so there might be an elevator in the building in the future). Back by the grizzlies, there's an old indoor rainforest building - while there's buttons to automatically open the door going in, I didn't find any on the first inside door going out. It makes sense they don't want both doors to open at once since it's a bird airlock, but not having independent ones on each door meant the day I used an ECV I got stuck in there until a nice staff member noticed.
All three times I've ever been to SF most of the little food kiosks haven't been open, and the vending machines for drinks have been hit and miss - so bring your own, or stock up at the cafe if you need to have supplies with you - but there are water fountains and water bottle filling stations around the zoo. There are interpretive audio boxes through the zoo in English and Spanish, used with a key you get at the entrance(?), but I heard a lot of complaints in passing about some of them not working. There's lots of parking at the zoo in a flat paved lot, and there's a specific dropoff area on one side for rideshares/mobility needs.
Oakland Zoo - Oakland, CA
To be clear up front - Oakland was the hardest facility to visit on this whole trip, with regards to mobility. We went twice, and I used an ECV (electric scooter) one and walked the other. Neither option was easy and both were exhausting. Oakland is a super hilly facility - you basically have to drive up a major hill to get to the zoo. The bottom half of the lower zoo can only be reached by going down pretty steep paths. The hills are also not graded to be "flat", so if you're in a wheelchair or ECV, you're going to have to lean to compensate for the tilt and balance the chair... while controlling it going down a steep hill. It's exhausting and kinda scary. (I don't even let other people carry my camera because $$, but I had to ask for help so I could focus on driving the ECV on those hills). There's also a lot of areas of the pathways that are not in the best repair, or patterned with pressed-in images, and multiple places actually have brass bugs embedded in the pavement so that they stick out above the surface. Lots of tripping hazards and/or things to rattle your teeth out rolling over. A couple places in the upper zoo (the California wilds area) the paths switch from paved to sand and back again, for drainage, maybe? On the upside, there's a lot of benches everywhere, including directly across from prime viewing areas.
Getting up to the upper zoo requires using a gondola - there's no walking option. You can actually take wheelchairs and ECVs on these, but you have to be ready to advocate for yourself. Normally, they don't stop the carriages completely, and expect people to walk on while they're still moving slowly. You can ask them to slow them down for you (I did, because knee issues plus torque is bad), or stop it completely if you need the time/help. When I took an ECV on, they had me disembark and get in one carriage, and they loaded it into the subsequent ones. This is fine because I can walk and stand on concrete for a while without it, but I'm not sure how that practice would work for people who need their mobility aids the whole time. They were very nice about managing the stopping and the loading and didn't make it feel like an imposition, too. If they stop the carriages completely at any point, there will be a loud buzzer/alarm when the ride starts back up. If you're close, it's pretty loud and startling. As they leave the track at the bottom the gondolas tip and dip a little, which can be scary if you're not expecting it - I think it's just the transition of the car from the loading bay onto the track itself. The rest of the ride is very smooth. The track is pretty high up and gives a great view of the bay and the surrounding cities, but face uphill if you don't do well with heights. Once at the upper zoo, the path from bald eagles through jaguar is mostly a boardwalk, but it's not too bumpy.
Oakland's parking is hard if you're not there early in the day, IMO. The overflow parking gets pretty far from the entrance, and starts to go up the hill towards the upper zoo. If the lot looks busy, drop anyone with mobility/stamina issues off at the entrance before parking. Unlike many other zoos I've visited, Oakland's ECVS have added sunshades, which is really nice (and which I should have used).
Monterey Zoo - Salinas, CA
This is a fairly small facility with most habitats on one level, but some big cats and bears are up a pretty big hill. The walkways are paved and flat, and there's an ADA-graded boardwalk ramp that takes you to the top of the hill. The pipes used for the handrails on both the stairs and the ramp get very hot in the sun, however. There's a boardwalk up to the rhino overlook. They indicate that their bathrooms are accessible, but the ones in the main building didn't have bars for transferring - I didn't check the ones up on the hill. At one point in the day speakers along the path started playing really loud pop music (drowned out the birds) and it was very overwhelming. There's lots of handicapped parking spots across from the front entrance, but if you don't have a tag, the rest of the spots are up a bit of a hill and a small walk from the entrance. They do have a note, though, that they can help if you need accessible parking and don't see any, so you could probably call/have someone to go in and ask for an accommodation.
Sequoia Park Zoo - Eureka, CA
This is another nice small facility, very doable for a half-day trip. The paths are paved and flat, and there's benches available. There's a lot of shade, although it can depend on the time of day, and places to fill a water-bottle. The sky-walk through the redwoods is accessible, but might be a little difficult depending on mobility limitations - its' a very sturdy boardwalk through the canopy of the tall trees. (I had more thoughts on this from my last visit, I'll dig out those notes). If you can do even part of it, it's worth it, and there's places to turn around. Because it's in a residential area of the town there's not a huge dedicated parking lot, but lots of street parking and a decent lot directly across the street. I've never had difficulty finding parking, and you can drop people off at the entrance easily.

Ohio
The first operational ( Jerry O’Malley and Ed Payne) mission of an SR-71 was carried out by SR-71A #17976 before concluding its career with about 3000 flight hours. It is among the first SR-71s to be permanently exhibited and best preserved. It is displayed at the National Museum of the United States Air Force, Wright-Patterson AFB, OH.
Oregon
Below the right wing of Howard Hughes' H-4 Hercules at the Evergreen Aviation Museum in McMinnville, OR, is the most complete and accurate SR-71, SR-71A #17971, which has accumulated over 3500 flight hours.
Utah
As mentioned, after January 11, 1968, when half of the SR-71 trainer fleet was lost due to the crash of #17957, a replacement trainer was built, designated SR-71C #17981. This aircraft is currently on display at the Hill Aerospace Museum, Hill AFB, UT. Irregular maintenance procedures and aftermarket construction caused constant yaw of the aircraft; therefore, the SR-71C was used on a limited basis between 1969-1976.

Universe Falls Timeline (New and Improved)
Finally got around to creating a new, from the ground up UF timeline, including all pre-story events, UF, UF2, and UFF and even beyond (aka MK2 or at least the start of it). Bear in mind that nothing in this timeline is finalized or official until it is actually written into UF proper, everything here is subject to change and shift around, and spoilers are abundant for all three stories, but there are some that I think are too spoilery that I've blocked out for ya'll. So with all that said, enjoy! (below the cut bc this is EXTREMELY LONG)
Ancient History
Pre-History
The Axolotl comes into existence, presiding over time and space
Bill Cipher is born in Euclydia to Euclid and Scalene
In an attempt to "liberate" Euclydia from the second dimension, Bill ends up destroying his home dimension and everyone in it
Bill conquers a slowly decaying dimension known as the Nightmare Realm and forms his gang of Henchmaniacs
The universe is born along with its countless lifeforms. (Humans and Gems included)
Bill sets his sights on Earth, wanting to merge the Nightmare Realm with it and conquer it as his own
Eons Ago
White Diamond, acting as the leader of all Gemkind, constructs the Gem Homeworld society
White Diamond creates Yellow Diamond and Blue Diamond to aid her in colonizing other worlds
White emphasizes the importance of perfection, creating Homeworld's caste system, bans cross-Gem fusion, and punishes Gems deemed "imperfect"
Under the Great Diamond Authority, the Gem race expands and cements their control over 43 planetary bodies and two star systems through colonization
Pink Diamond is created as the last of the Diamonds, coming out smaller than the others
Fluorite, Rhodonite, Padparadscha, and the Rutile Twins are considered "off color" by Homeworld standards and remain in hiding underground in an abandoned Kindergarten to avoid the Shattering Robonoids
Pink Diamond is given Pink Pearl, who she ends up damaging in a fit of rage; after this, White Diamond takes Pink Pearl away and takes control of her
Pink Diamond is given Spinel as a playmate and Pearl is given to Pink to replace her old one
Over 6,000 years ago
Ruby, Sapphire, Bismuth, and Lapis Lazuli are created on the Gem Homeworld or one of its colonies
Gems arrive on Earth, their first scout ship crash landing in what would eventually become Gravity Falls, Oregon; the impact of their ship's landing forms a deep valley
Pink Diamond is granted access to colonize Earth; she abandons Spinel in the garden to focus on running her colony
Gems begin to emerge in the Prime Kindergarten; Structures such as the Lunar Sea Spire, Communication Hub, Sky Spire, Moon Base, and Sea Shrine are constructed; Amethyst is formed (but does not emerge) in the Alpha Kindergarten
Pearl inspires Pink Diamond to disguise herself as a Rose Quartz so she can explore the Earth; while on Earth, Pink becomes fascinated by the beauty of the planet and realizes that her colony would destroy all of it
Pink contacts the other Diamonds to tell them that she does not wish to complete the colony and instead wants to preserve the life on Earth; in response, Blue Diamond creates a Human Zoo for her and she along with Yellow Diamond kidnap humans from their families and stored them inside the Zoo
Over 5,750 Years Ago
Pink Diamond decides to use her Rose Quartz alter-ego to make a stand that her fellow Diamonds could not ignore. She originally intended to use Rose Quartz to scare away other Gems
Pink Diamond (as Rose Quartz) and Pearl defect from Homeworld and form the Crystal Gems
The cut of Rose Quartz is thereby recognized as a threat and every Rose Quartz is removed from service, specifically from Pink Diamond's entourage; they are bubbled in the human zoo
Blue Diamond and members of her court arrive on Earth and oversees the removal of the then-forming Rebellion
Sapphire is sent to Earth along with three Ruby guards at the request of Blue Diamond; after Rose and Pearl launch a direct attack, Ruby and Sapphire accidentally form Garnet for the first time
Rose tells Pearl how fascinated she is that two completely different Gems fused. Pearl attempts to fuse with Rose but fails. Rose and Pearl run into Garnet where Rose tells her to never question who she is, recruiting her to the Crystal Gems
Over 5,500 Years Ago
Pink Diamond tries one more time to persuade Yellow and Blue to end colonization, this time using Rose Quartz as an excuse. The other Diamonds continued to ignore her pleas
Rose meets Bill Cipher for the first time; he offers to help her save the Earth from the other Diamonds and the two become friends, eventually developing feelings for each other
The Gem War officially begins
Bismuth is recruited to Rose's cause, outfitting the Crystal Gems with weapons; she creates Rose's Sword
True to his word, Bill assists the Crystal Gems' cause by possessing Homeworld Gems, using them to shatter their comrades before forcing them to shatter themselves; Rose is largely unaware of this but over time, Pearl becomes suspicious of his motives
Rose and Bill's romance continues as they fuse for the first of several times, forming Druzy Quartz
Humans begin to become involved in the Gem War; wanting to protect them without raising suspicion from the other Diamonds, Pink Diamond commissions the creation of Ambers, a new cut of Gem specializing in organic preservation, claiming they're meant to work at the human zoo; Rose ends up recruiting most of the Ambers to her cause
Over 5,300 Years Ago
Lapis Lazuli arrives on Earth to visit for a short time and is caught mid-war and poofed by a Bismuth-type warrior Gem
Lapis Lazuli is then collected by a Homeworld soldier and was mistaken for a rebel. She is imprisoned in a mirror to be used as a source of information
Over 5,000 Years Ago
The Beta Kindergarten is established mid-way through the Rebellion in haste to create more troops; Jasper is created among these troops
Bismuth presents Rose with the Breaking Point, a weapon designed to shatter Gems, specifically the Diamonds. Disagreeing, Rose poofed and bubbled Bismuth (upon Bill's suggestion), later storing her in Lion's pocket dimension
Pearl presents her worries about Bill to Rose; Rose attempts to contact Bill to set things straight but he refuses to answer her for unknown reasons; Realizing they're on their own, Rose and Pearl develop a last-ditch plan to save the earth
Pink Diamond and Pearl plan a ruse to stage Pink Diamond's shattering. Pearl, shapeshifted into Rose Quartz, "shatters" Pink Diamond by poofing her after she has swallowed fake gem shards
From then on, Pink Diamond permanently identifies herself as Rose Quartz and continues leading the Crystal Gems in the Rebellion
In grief over Pink Diamond's 'shattering' the remaining Diamond Authority makes a deal with Bill Cipher to get revenge on the Crystal Gems and the Earth
Homeworld officially enters Era 2
White, knowing Pink is Rose Quartz, makes a separate deal with Bill to return Pink's gemstone to Homeworld so she can be (spoiler)
Earth is deemed an unviable colony by Homeworld, commencing Forced Fusion experiments using the gemstone shards of fallen Crystal Gems; The Cluster is embedded in the Earth's core at some point as part of these experiments
Blue Diamond takes over Pink Diamond's Zoo in her absence
During a battle between Rose and Hessonite, the Light Prism is lost
Over 4,500 Years Ago
Homeworld Gems are commanded to evacuate Earth
Lapis Lazuli's mirror is abandoned at the Galaxy Warp and her gemstone is trampled over and cracked during the evacuation. Many Homeworld Gems such as Centipeetle get left behind
A flash of light is set off by the Diamonds, corrupting all Gems caught in it; The only known Gems who were unaffected are Pink Diamond/Rose Quartz, Pearl, Garnet, Bismuth, and Lapis Lazuli
Following the corrupting light, Rose begs Bill to restore the corrupted Crystal Gems; Bill rebuffs her, however, claiming that his true intentions were to drive Gems off of Earth so he could take it for himself as their "relationship" officially comes to an end
Bill changes the conditions of his deal with Rose and desires her gemstone as payment for his "services" during the war; Rose refuses to give it to him and Bill retreats for the time being, promising that he will return to take what's his eventually
The Galaxy Warp becomes inactive
Unknown
Era 2 of Gem production begins on Homeworld
Jasper is transferred to Yellow's court
Amethyst is found in the Prime Kindergarten and joins the Crystal Gems
Unnatural anomalies and strange creatures begin to congregate in the area that would become Gravity Falls
Peridot is formed and receives her limb enhancers on Homeworld
Pearl finds Lapis Lazuli's mirror at the Galaxy Warp and stores it in her Gem
Rose and Bill continue to encounter each other throughout the centuries, opposing each other each time they do
1000 AD
Bill attempts to trick a shaman named Modoc the Wise into building a portal between the Nightmare Realm and the Earth, though their deal falls through when Modoc prophesies an apocalyptic event involving Bill
Gravity Falls' native population evacuates the valley under fear of the land being cursed following contact with Bill Cipher, leaving pottery, blankets, and remnants of their language behind
19th Century
1837
Quentin Trembley wins the 9th Presidential Election of the United States in a literal landslide. However, his many silly and embarrassing policies lead him to be forced out of office, and William Henry Harrison is declared the 9th president of the United States
1842
8½th United States President Quentin Trembley discovers the valley of Gravity Falls and subsequently founds the town
1843
Drawn to the valley due to its odd properties, the Crystal Gems arrive in Gravity Falls and begin to investigate its anomalies

Basic Rights Oregon, which has been working since the 1990s to end discrimination against LGBTQ2SIA+ people, is running a weekly newsletter with an emphasis on counter-actions and reasons to hope. Each issue contains a measured evaluation of how immediate a given threat is, a round-up of what is being done about it, and how we can best protect each other in the meanwhile.
I highly recommend it as an antidote to the panic and anxiety so many of us are feeling right now.
Items are a mix of national and Oregon news. Highlights from this issue on national topics:
Court rulings that have blocked Trump's executive order on gender-affirming care and returned LGBTQ+ information to CDC websites.
Protests supporting queer art at the Kennedy Center
ACLU lawsuit challenging the anti-trans passport policy
A notice about the removal of trans history from the National Park Service's Stonewall materials.
Info about how to support the Trans Youth Emergency Project, which assists trans youth in the 26 states that DON'T protect trans rights.
And about stuff happening in Oregon:
Bills currently before the Oregon legislature, how to support the good ones and the unlikelihood of the bad ones passing.
Local fundraising events, including a trivia night and a movie showing.
In short, if you want to stay informed about queer news but are trying to keep from getting burned out by the news-cycle rollercoaster, this is a good resource. I particularly commend it to people in Oregon who are looking for constructive ways to protect queer rights from this administration.

Bigfoot Trap in Rogue River–Siskiyou National Forest
The now-defunct North American Wildlife Research Team built a Bigfoot trap in Oregon's Rogue River–Siskiyou National Forest in 1974. Growing interest in Bigfoot, the mythical ape-like creature that lives in isolated wildernesses, motivated this enormous endeavor. They baited the massive wooden trap with animal carcasses to capture Bigfoot alive. They caught multiple bears in the trap, but they never found Bigfoot. The initiative was part of a larger cultural moment in the 1970s, when cryptozoology and the search for Bigfoot were popular.
Tumblr media
The Bigfoot trap's failure led to its abandonment in the early 1980s after years of maintenance. Maintaining the trap was likely unsustainable without Bigfoot evidence or encounters around it. The North American Wildlife Research Team disbanded, leaving the trap as a fascinating remnant. The abandoned building deteriorated and blended into the woodland. But the trap remained a local attraction, a reminder of how far people have gone to solve cryptozoological puzzles and humanity's infatuation with mythical animals. The US Forest Service rehabilitated the Bigfoot trap in 2006 to honor its history and culture. The trap now attracts tourists from around the world who are fascinated by Bigfoot and the trap's odd history along the Collings Mountain hiking trail. This unique monument in the Rogue River–Siskiyou National Forest attracts hikers who take photos and learn about its construction. Although the trap never served its initial goal, it now symbolizes human curiosity and imagination. A serious attempt to catch a mythological monster has become folklore, preserving a part of Bigfoot history for future generations.

Levity Creek!
Chapter One (?)
Grammar? I hardly know 'er
I really need to brush up but we're going right for it instead. Don't know how often I'll update this, or if it'll get any reception at all. Here you go, folks! Don't expect too much to happen right away.
____
Entry 1.
You know, I'm not even sure I could tell you the last time I spent three hours on the phone with someone. Let alone someone I felt growing further from my touch each year, but it was like the connection never really left as soon as we spoke. Hell, it felt like a blessing to hear from Fiddleford — some kind of proverbial spark reignited. Sounds silly, but I swear it's like we were kids all over again.
He always was as friendly as they come, and damn it if I didn't looked up to him for it. The guy could make a friend quicker than I could get my mouth open. Then again, I hardly ever did open it.
Fiddleford's still everything I knew him to be, actually. I guess I'd just been afraid that we were too different nowadays to be as close as we were. After all, he's got a kid now. Tate. How about that?
In his fashion, he forgot why he called me until the very end. He landed a freelance job up in Oregon that he wants my help with. I don't think I've ever agreed to anything quicker. If it'll get me outta here for a while, it's a gift.
I'm heading for Oregon tomorrow. Hope my van makes it.
___
If it weren't for the obnoxious rumble of the engine and the undeniable need to keep the vent windows open to accommodate it, I might have been able to hear the radio. Every now and again, I manage to hear the static of leaving and entering broadcast range — sometimes a dull guitar riff, but nothing satisfying. The speaker nestled in the driver's side has been busted for as long as I can remember. I think I've started to enjoy complaining about it, so I reckon that's why I never fix it. No, instead, I get to sit with my thoughts and a rattling doghouse. In hindsight, it was a miserable choice to make for such a long drive.
In fact, driving from the East Coast to the West Coast in a metaphorical brick, which reaches fifty-five miles an hour on a good day, is undoubtedly one of the stupidest decisions I've ever made. Sure, I could have flown, but then I would have left this marvel of machinery behind. And what am I without my office?
From floor to roof, I'd turned the back of my van into a space as comfortable as my apartment back home. More often than not, I spent my time in it. As long as I could hook it up to a power source, I could relax on the beanbag chair and type for hours. I've gotten better sleep and more work done in the back of this van than anywhere else to tell you the truth. At least, that's been the pattern so far. I'm starting to hope that Oregon changes that. I could use a change.
While I'm excited for the job, it's bound to be a big adjustment. From what I understand, which isn't a lot mind you, Gravity Falls is the town sending out contracts for the construction of the software service. When Fiddleford mentioned the name, I thought he might have been joking, but then I got the document in the mail. It looked incredibly legal, not to mention formal, for such a small job in a place that can only be described as "nowhere". Then again, most places were keen on adapting to new systems so they don't get too far behind.
It sort of made me wonder if the whole "nowhere" front has a purpose. After all, I did sign something that effectively mirrors an NDA.
By the time I reach Oklahoma and park, I recount that I've stopped about ten times for one reason or another. I had stayed in Memphis last night, which wasn't much of an annoyance, but the stops prior had been. A flat tire, the engine stalled, I suddenly really had to use the bathroom. Though that last one seems more like a poor lunch decision, I could almost swear that it was like the universe telling me to turn around and go back home before I got too far. I'd considered it while cursing over the carburetor as it hissed at me.
The only reason I still lay here in my motel with the intention of continuing tomorrow is for Fiddleford if nothing else. I called him when I first got here, half ready to let him know that it's just not a trip I can make, but he sounded so excited that I couldn't bring myself to crush his enthusiasm. He was already planning things we could do and prattling on about places he wanted to take me. The thought of disappointing him seemed wrong.
Pushing the covers of the stiff bed down toward my ankles, I roll onto my side and stare out the window. Each time I shift it feels like I'm getting further from sleep. Either the matress springs make an unholy creaking noise, they press into my back, or the people in the next room over get rowdy.
Eventually, I decide it isn't worth it. If I can't sleep, I may as well get going. So, I grab up my keys and my bag and sling everything into the passenger seat. Slamming the driver's side door shut behind me, I gas up the engine while it whines and protests before it finally relents. It isn't until then that I actually let some relief wash over me.
"I know you're tired," I mumble, "but I gotta get the hell outta Oklahoma."
I started hearing the radio a little more clearly after that.

Excerpt from this story from Inside Climate News:
Drive 50 miles from Boise, Idaho, past the suburbs, exurbs and farms into Oregon, and you’ll find yourself in the largest conservation opportunity left in the continental U.S.
In the Owyhee Canyonlands, Western sagebrush landscapes surround rock formations reminiscent of the Colorado Plateau, leading some to liken it to the Grand Canyon. It stretches across roughly 7 million acres of high desert in Oregon, Idaho and Nevada. Roughly a third of that landscape is high-quality wilderness—more land than in many existing national parks—with no roads or cell service.
Some of the last pristine sections of the rapidly declining sagebrush habitat that once dominated much of the Western U.S., the Owyhee Canyonlands—named for the phonetic pronunciation of Hawaii after three island natives were lost in the wilderness and never found—have remained wild despite little federal protection. “Its remoteness protected it,” said Ryan Houston, the executive director of the Oregon Natural Desert Association, an environmental group leading efforts to protect the area.
But the Owyhee is under threat. The population in Idaho’s Treasure Valley and Boise, to the north of the canyonlands is growing, with suburbs expanding into the area. The south is home to a new mining boom, with the second approved lithium mine in the U.S. now under construction just over the Nevada border. In between, invasive weeds have invaded the area, sparking bigger and hotter wildfires that are turning portions of the region from sagebrush to grasslands, threatening the entire ecosystem and the cultural sites found throughout the canyonlands that are important to local Indigenous tribes.
For decades, groups have pushed to protect the Owyhees and come up short. Current legislation introduced by Oregon’s senators to protect the area has broad local support but stalled in Congress. So a growing grassroots coalition is taking matters into its own hands, urging President Joe Biden to designate just over 1 million acres in the Owyhee Canyonlands as a National Monument under the Antiquities Act, which allows presidents to protect naturally or historically significant places without Congress.
“It used to be you could find a place like this, write a bill and protect it,” said Aaron Kindle, the director of sporting advocacy at the National Wildlife Federation, who has helped lead the conservation group’s involvement in the monument push. But times have changed, he said, so communities and conservationists are turning to the nation’s highest office, rather than just representatives from their state.
They believe now is their best chance to protect this stretch of land in eastern Oregon. In his first few weeks in office, Biden issued an executive order tasking his administration to conserve 30 percent of America’s lands and waters from development by 2030, establishing conservation as key to addressing the climate crisis. That led to the America the Beautiful initiative, which outlined how to work with local community stakeholders to protect biodiversity, the natural resources needed to address climate change and Americans’ access to wild spaces.

Newberry National Volcanic Monument, OR (No. 26)
A United States Forest Service fire lookout tower was built on the summit in 1931, and in early 1933 a steep, single-lane road was constructed spiraling up to the summit. In February of that year, the local Skyliners ski club proposed a ski jump on Lava Butte, but it was never built. In June 1946, widening of the road up Lava Butte to two lanes was completed, along with constructing two small parking lots at the summit. The road was later paved in July 1950. The original lookout was replaced with a larger one in 1957, which was subsequently enlarged in 1962 to accommodate a small visitor center and museum on the first floor. In 1998 this was replaced with a new lookout built in the original L-4 style of 1931.
In July 1966, twenty-two astronauts trained in Central Oregon for the upcoming Moon landings, at sites including Lava Butte, Lava River Cave, and Newberry Crater. In May 1967 the U.S. Forest Service created the 8,983 acres (3,635 ha) Lava Butte Geological Area to protect the cinder cone, with plans for recreational and interpretive development. Construction of the Lava Lands Visitor Center located just south of the cone began in April 1969 and it was finally dedicated in September 1975. In November 1990, Newberry National Volcanic Monument was created encompassing Newberry Crater, Lava Cast Forest Geological Area, Lava River Cave, and the Lava Butte Geological Area.
From early May to mid October, a shuttle transports visitors up Red Cinder Road from the Lava Lands Visitor Center to the lookout on Lava Butte. Hiking up Red Cinder Road is a year-round option. A scenic rim trail around the top of Lava Butte is 0.35 miles (0.56 km) long.

The History of Millhaven
In the late 1800s, the Davis family owned a large amount of farmland in what would later become Millhaven, Oregon. Seeking to capitalize on the area's natural resources, they built a mill. But they didn't stop there. The Davis family also invested in creating an entire town around the mill, with homes, businesses, and public services to attract workers and their families.
Their efforts paid off. Many people looking for work flocked to Millhaven, eager for a chance to make a living there. The town quickly grew and became a hub of economic activity. The Davis family's influence and power expanded along with it, as they controlled much of the town's infrastructure and resources.
However, the working conditions at the mill were notoriously bad. The Davis family cut corners and ignored safety regulations, leading to long hours, low pay, and frequent accidents. Many workers suffered from respiratory problems, hearing loss, and other ailments as a result of their work at the mill. Despite protests from the workers and their families, the Davis family refused to improve conditions or compensate the victims.
In the year 1909 the workers at the mill had finally had enough. Inspired by the growing labor movement in the United States, they organized a strike demanding better pay, safer working conditions, and the right to unionize. The Davis family responded with violence and intimidation, using their control over the town's law enforcement.
The situation quickly escalated, with the workers forming a picket line outside the mill and the Davis family bringing in scabs and armed officers to break the strike. The resulting violence led to several deaths and injuries, and the workers' demands remained unmet.
The strike received national attention, with labor leaders and politicians speaking out in support of the workers. The Davis family's reputation was tarnished, and they were forced to negotiate with the workers. Eventually, a compromise was reached, and the workers won some concessions, including a small pay increase and improved safety measures.
The mill largely expanded by the 1950s. The legacy of the mill and the Davis family's corruption continued to haunt Millhaven for decades. The toxic waste dumping that began in the 1970s only added to the town's problems, polluting the environment and causing health problems for many residents. The mill was eventually forced to shut down but the Davis family still held power over the town.
In 2023, the current mayor of Millhaven is Michael Davis, a direct descendant of the Davis family that founded the town. Michael's brother, Adam, is the pastor of the only church in Millhaven, which has long been a center of community life in the town. The Davis family still holds a significant amount of power over Millhaven, with Mayor Davis using his position to further their interests.
Mayor Davis is currently working on a plan to gentrify Millhaven, which he sees as a way to revitalize the town and attract new investment. His plan includes the construction of luxury apartments and homes, a new megachurch, and a shopping center, all of which would be aimed at wealthier residents and visitors.
However, the gentrification plan has been met with resistance from many of Millhaven's long-time residents, who fear that they will be pushed out of their homes and their community. The majority of Millhaven's residents are low-income, and many have lived in the town for generations. They worry that the new development will only benefit outsiders and leave them stuck with a higher cost of living that they cannot afford.

Why Pole Building Kits Aren’t Worth It: 3 Key Reasons to Avoid Them
A trend that needs to end sooner rather than later is the desire to buy a pole-building kit over a traditionally constructed pole-building. A pole-building kit is a pre-packaged construction bundle designed to simplify the building process of a barn, shed, workshop or any variety of pole-building you can imagine.
Tumblr media
The kits are meant to entice the hands-on type for a do-it-yourself option. You typically receive a bundle of poles, metal panels, trusses, and hardware. While they are touted as cost-effective, the simplicity has huge drawbacks that all consumers need to be aware of. Let’s explore beyond the allure of pole-building kits to see what you are truly getting and the 3 key reasons you should avoid them.
Key Reason #1: Lack of Customization and Limited Design Options
Do you enjoy being limited on your future pole building with no customization? This could be the easiest reason to forgo a pole-building kit. Pole-building kits are made with pre-set designs that may not truly fit your needs and desires.
When you design a pole building, you want to have a space that reflects the size, layout, and functionality you desire. A pole-building kit may not be able to cover all that you desire. The kits might limit any of these areas forcing you to choose to cut back on something.
Professional builders often have solutions and customizations that far surpass any pole-building kit on the market. They will take the time to listen to your exact needs, appreciate the space you have, and design a building that fits all of your criteria.
Key Reason #2: Hidden Costs and Quality Concerns About Pole-Building Kits
While you may have the skill to build your own pole building, you may not have all the tools, equipment, or extra materials needed. What many people do not realize is that pole-building kits are not all-inclusive. This means that extra expenses are not only likely but necessary. The assembly process can be convoluted and timely making it possible for mistakes to happen. These mistakes will also be up to you to fix and pay for.
Furthermore, pole-building kits are not generally comprised of quality material. As the saying goes, buy cheap buy twice. Meaning it is possible that your pole-building kit will not give you the results you desire. The integrity and durability will be much less than a traditionally built pole building. Over time, kits will wither away in the ever-changing climate, high winds, hot summer days, and frigid winter nights.
Tumblr media
A professionally built structure will always stand the test of time when compared to a kit. When mistakes are made, you will not be the one struggling to find a solution and paying for it. Instead, you will have a quality-built building that is meant to last.
Key Reason #3:  Assembly Challenges and Lack of Support
It is no surprise that a pole-building kit requires construction expertise that many buyers just do not have. The nature of the assembly is time-consuming and physically demanding. These criteria can easily steer most buyers away.
Additionally, most pole-building kit companies lack proper technical support. It will be difficult to get professional guidance to help during the construction process. When you have questions, you may not get direct answers.
A professional builder will put your expertise at ease. There will be no worry about guidance or help as your job will be to just dream up your building and its functionality. The rest will be up to your contractor to provide an efficient and safe installation.
Why Professional Builds Are a Better Choice Than Pole-Building Kits
Having a pole-building built properly with the right permits, tailored designs, craftsmanship, and superior quality are all the reasons to choose a professional build. Pole-building kits lack in the all-around building and maintaining process. You will get very little support and end up with a structure that may not even function how you envisioned. Rest easy at night and choose a professional builder.
Final Thoughts on Why Pole-Building Kits Aren’t Worth It
It should be easy to see why pole-building kits are not worth it. From lacking in customization to hidden costs and lack of durability a pole-building kit is not worth it for most homeowners. The process can be convoluted, time-consuming and in the end, you may have something rather impractical. Instead, choose a professional builder to handle your next pole-building project.

Save Trans Lives
The "TransHoming Project" aims to build Tiny Home communities and RV Parks for Minorities fleeing red states. These homes could either serve as temporary lodging or permanent residence.
These communities would be established in sanctuary states such as:
New Jersey
New York
Oregon
Illinois
California
Any other state that is safe for LGBTQ+ individuals, Women, Children, and People Of Color.
The end goal is to have large-scale communities with little-to-no cost for the inhabitants, and a self-sustaining model for water, food, and electricity.
If the United States will not protect us, we will make our own sanctuary.
Why is this project needed?
As of April 7th, 2023, there have been over 450 anti-LGBTQ+ bills proposed in the United States. These bills range anywhere from Banning transgender healthcare for youth (Idaho HB 71) and prohibiting Health Insurance from covering ANY Gender affirming care (Florida HB 1421), to Charging anyone who uses the “incorrect” bathroom with sexual assault (Arkansas SB 270).
To find more information, visit the ACLU’s website.
With these bills in the works, the safety of LGBTQ+ persons, their health providers, and their children are at risk. It is imperative that we start relocating to blue sanctuary states before these bills become law.
With our project, we will ensure that those who cannot afford to quickly relocate on their own can seek proper shelter through us.

At least 5,747 children underwent gender transition surgeries in the US from 2019 to 2023, according to insurance data obtained by the medical watchdog group Do No Harm.
The data relies on insurance claims and therefore excludes surgeries paid for out-of-pocket and those performed at institutions which don’t report claims, meaning it significantly underestimates the prevalence of these surgeries. Nonetheless, it reveals an enormous industry and undermines activists’ claims that such surgeries for minors are exceedingly rare.
Covered surgeries include mastectomies, breast construction, facial surgeries, and genital surgeries. Only two states, Alaska and Wyoming, had zero insurance claims filed for paediatric gender surgeries from 2019 to 2023, and even these states had patients receiving puberty blockers or cross-sex hormones under the age of 18, as did every other US state.
Some states served as hot spots, including California, which had at least 1,359 surgeries. Meanwhile, New York had 616; and Pennsylvania, Oregon and Massachusetts all had more than 300 paediatric gender surgeries during the five year period. Several red states served as the location for surprisingly high numbers of surgeries, such as Texas where there were more than 200, and Florida where there were more than 100.
A 2022 Reuters report, which also relied on insurance data, found that gender-affirming mastectomies and breast construction surgeries performed on children aged 13-17 increased from 238 in 2019 to 282 in 2021. At the same time, there was a steep increase in the prescription of puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones and a surge in gender dysphoria diagnoses, Reuters found. But the new data from Do No Harm reveals that the industry is larger than previously known, and it’s quickly growing despite state-level restrictions. The reported surgeries brought in more than $108 million during the five year period.
The database also tracked insurance claims for puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones. Do No Harm found that more than 8,500 patients underwent hormones or puberty blockers, comprising more than 62,000 total prescriptions and costing more than $11 million. Hormones are relatively affordable and can be easily obtained without insurance, so these findings represent a very conservative estimate.
Paediatric medical transitions have been championed by trans activists as well as the Biden administration — sometimes in concert. Rachel Levine, Assistant Secretary for Health of the Department of Health and Human Services, pressured the World Professional Association for Transgender Health to remove age limits for cross-sex medical treatments, including surgeries, from its guidelines. Most major medical organisations in the US officially endorse these procedures for minors, though doctors remain deeply divided over the issue.
A number of patients who have come to regret gender-related procedures they underwent in adolescence are now suing their providers, which could push malpractice insurers to stop covering the practice. While there are no federal restrictions on child medical transitions, 24 states have laws restricting the procedures. These contentious laws have resulted in legal disputes, one of which is on the Supreme Court’s docket for the current term. Justices are expected to rule in the late spring on whether laws restricting transgender medical procedures for minors violate the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th Amendment.

2024-12-19: Northeast Oregon (Hex 19)
Mountains seem to block the horizon in almost every direction, their peaks seeming to change shape as you travel. Weathered stretches of lava rock are visible here.
Notable Feature: Constructed Landmark
Two nearby rock faces bear wildly different art. One is a petroglyph of an indigenous trickster spirit whose image was painstakingly scratched into the rock. The other rock face is spray-painted with a message scrawled in large white letters: "FOR A GOOD TIME, GO AWAY!"
Hidden: The Garden Man
Despite the desert that makes up most of this hex, there is a curiously verdant parcel of land on an abandoned farmstead. Flowering vines creep over ground and structure alike, the vines staying green and the flowers staying red regardless of season or temperature. Dr. Andrew Brooks is a botanist who has spent several years trying to find this farmstead that was mentioned only on The Routes, and unfortunately, he won't be able to leave the farm.
There is something unusual here that doesn't play by the usual rules of reality or The Routes. Whispers come from the plants, occasionally saying coherent words as the leaves rustle in breezes that seem to be produced by the vines themselves instead of the usual source. Anyone who stays in the vicinity of this green space for longer than two weeks begins to sprout tendrils of plant matter from their skin which grow faster the closer they get to the edge of the green space and trap those who try to escape with deep taproots. Such is the fate that has befallen Dr. Brooks. Although he is alive and able to speak, he is rapidly becoming more plant than person.
Dr. Brooks asks those who are still able to leave the area to deliver a message to his family that he died, and also to deliver his research notes to the his colleagues at the University of Eastern Montana.
Hidden: The Tower Dweller
Intricate designs like those found in a zen garden are raked into the gravel surrounding an old rusting water tower. The tower is home to Pete Holladay, a long-haired artist who neither fits in with the hippies nor traditional society. The inside of the water tower has been transformed into a comfortable loft apartment. He is almost completely self-sufficient, walking 10-ish miles to the nearest town once a month to resupply. If the party is going to Idaho, Pete will ask for help tracking down some folks who stole a sculpture that he built in front of the tower.
Pete doesn't know who stole the sculpture, but knows the general description of the people and their vehicle. He saw them just as they were leaving with the sculpture, but since Pete doesn't have a car, he couldn't pursue them. The thieves were two caucasian men in a blue pickup truck with Idaho plates (here's a picture of what the license plates looked like in 1966). The vehicle's plate number is A 14546. Recovering the sculpture and/or bringing the thieves to justice will make Pete's tower available to stay in for free if the party is ever in the area.
Service Station: Blue Mountain Quick Stop
This service station looks like it was built from relatively flimsy materials. No vehicle service beyond fuel is offered here. Stenciled directly onto one side of the building is a sign that says "US NSF MONITOR SITE". A pair of fuel pumps, one for gasoline and one for diesel, are covered in dust and no longer function. Anyone who attempts to use the pumps will be greeted by a man in coveralls wearing a name tag and thick gloves. Roll 1d6 and consult the table below to see which man it is:
Mr. Brown
Mr. Davis
Mr. Johnson
Mr. Miller
Mr. Smith
Mr. Williams
The attendant has 100 gallons each of gasoline and diesel in 5-gallon jerry cans. He will sell fuel for $1 per can, which is about half the usual price. People can also purchase the jerry can without any fuel in it for $1. The cans have an imprinted logo that reads "United States Army".
Anyone going inside the store will hear a sound that is somewhere between radio static and popcorn (geiger counter noise). Closer inspection of the inventory available for purchase will reveal that nearly all of the snacks here are out of date. It is relatively obvious that this service station is a front for something but the attendant is unwilling to divulge that purpose: its primary function is to monitor the levels of background radiation from the recently decommissioned Hanford nuclear site in southeastern Washington.
Behind the building is a pickup truck that is covered with a gray cloth; underneath the cloth is a black vehicle with government license plates. A dirt service road provides a difficult way to leave The Routes, which leads directly to the Hanford site an hour after leaving The Routes. Any fuel or jerry cans sold are replenished as 7:00AM the following day by the next government employee arriving on site to relieve the current attendant/monitor.

Frog Lake to Barlow Pass on the PCT
As hikers walk north from Warm Spring Reservation heading toward Mt. Hood, they pass Timothy Lake and Little Crater Lake before crossing Warm Springs Highway and reaching Frog Lake, with its popular campground and day use area. One of the smoothest sections of the PCT trail in Oregon is between Frog Lake and Barlow Pass trailheads.  The trail is fairly wide and almost always in great condition, making it a fast run.  The Frog Lake to Barlow Pass distance is just 5 miles.
Tumblr media
Old wooden trail sign at Twin Lakes – PCT trail junction.
Not far north of Frog Lake, the PCT passes Twin Lakes, lakes fed from nearby springs providing crystal clear waters that in the right light provide reflections from Mt. Hood to the north.
Tumblr media

Mt. Hood and Balsamroot at Palmateer Point
Barlow Pass and the famous Barlow Wagon Road, another emigrant route built in 1846, passes not far to the south of Mt. Hood. Its construction allowed covered wagons to cross the Cascade Range and reach the Willamette Valley, which had previously been nearly impossible. Even so, it was by far the most harrowing 100 miles of the nearly 2,000-mile Oregon Trail.
The Pacific Crest Trailside Reader: Oregon and Washington includes a story about the Barlow Road. There are many parallels between the Naches Pass Road mentioned in the previous post and the Barlow Road.

Dinner at Little Crater Lake Campground, 1991
"It was a wonderful swim at Timothy Lake and enjoyable evening at Little Crater Lake which is a 45-foot deep artesian spring . . . absolutely crystal clear and 40 degrees. We are camping in a 'self service' campground with a few people camped here also. It seems a little strange to have cars driving around and other people camped nearby, but it is made up for by having a PICNIC TABLE to sit at, and water from a pump to drink." July 29, 1991 (Jim Peacock)
The next day we walked 16 miles stopping for lunch at Frog Lake, continuing the "unremarkable". I walked in tennis shoes to give a 'hot spot' on my little toe some relief. We continued pass Barlow Pass another three miles positioned for our exit the next morning at Timberline Lodge.
