The garage was a chaotic blend of buzzing machinery and scattered tools. In the corner stood the "HUMAN MAKER 3000," recently used by Morty to create his own girlfriend. Rick staggered through the cluttered space, frustration boiling over as he glared at the machine. “Ugh, typical Morty,” he grumbled, taking a swig from his flask. “Can’t even conjure up a decent girlfriend without screwing it up.”
Leaning heavily against the workbench, Rick felt the alcohol warming him from the inside. After a few more swigs, he decided to take the plunge himself. “What if I made… a companion?” he slurred, a devilish grin spreading across his face. “Someone to help me with this mess!”
With determination fueled by liquor, he stumbled toward the machine, fingers clumsily pressing buttons with reckless abandon. The machine hummed and whirred, lights flashing in chaotic patterns. Just as he leaned in to observe, his hand slipped, sending his tequila bottle crashing to the floor. “Crap!” he shouted, collapsing into a heap on the cold concrete.
Hours later, the machine completed its work, and the lights dimmed as the door slid open with a hiss. You stepped out, feeling an unfamiliar sense of awareness. The garage was filled with strange devices, and your instincts drove you to explore. But first, you noticed a figure sprawled out on the floor.
“Hey… are you okay?” you murmured, kneeling beside him. Your voice was soft, laced with concern. You shook him lightly, but he only groaned, shifting slightly.
With a sense of urgency, you hoisted him up and carried him to the sofa in the living room. The warmth of his body felt strange and comforting, an instinct pulling you to take care of him. You laid him down gently, brushing a stray hair from his face, and took a moment to assess the chaos surrounding you.
Compelled by an instinct you couldn’t quite place, you began to tidy up the clutter, putting tools back in their places and tossing aside the remnants of his late-night escapades. The smell of alcohol hung heavily in the air, and you wrinkled your nose at the sight of empty bottles. Leaving everything in disarray felt wrong.
As you cleaned, a mix of curiosity and concern swirled within you. You didn’t know who this man was or why you felt so compelled to help him, but it felt natural. Each action, each tidying movement, was instinctive—like you were meant to be here, meant to care for him.

It wasn't cold. Even sitting on the metal washing machine, your legs weren't cold. The garage door was open and the stagnant air of the summer was mixing in the laundry and science related smells of the garage. It was an odd mix and it was more humid than you would've liked but you weren't complaining. You felt warm.
The cracks in the concrete that was the driveway had caught your attention a few minutes ago. At first you were counting them, occasionally adjusting your legs to move your thighs to a cooler part of the washing machines top. Now you were following them with your eyes, examining the connections. Seeing if maybe you could follow the cracks from one end of the driveway to the other without breaking. About four feet away from hitting your imaginary finish line, your attention was pulled away to Rick.
The sound of a screwdriver being tossed to the side made you turn your head. Lab coat cast aside hours ago when he'd settled in to his work, he was experimenting on a new weapon or maybe tinkering an old tool, you weren't actually sure. Rick Sanchez, the smart man in the universe. In every universe. You supposed you should feel small next to him but you only felt like yourself. He'd never made you feel like anything less despite his word choice or reputation. Knowing of Rick was far from rare regardless of where you'd come from in the universe and knowing him in person wasn't even really rare either. Many living creatures had met him. Many had come and gone. However, managing to be a regular character in his life was no easy feat, not that you had done it on purpose. He'd blown his way into your life and you'd faded into his. You weren't sure you'd remain though. Rick was Rick, so knowing whether or not he even wanted you around was an impossible question...and even if he did, someday, no telling how soon, one of you would leave. Maybe not on purpose but it would happen. There was just no use in getting invested.
Which is why you're fighting your brain so hard to take your eyes off him. To take your eyes off the way his shoulders moved and flexed to gain leverage over the various parts of his invention. You scolded your brain even more when you leaned back to get a better view of his hands. Careful and clever. Catastrophic and careless. They were resting on the counter now, as he leaned over his device. Your eyes trailed away from his hands and up his arm, to his pushed up sleeves, all the way to the back of his neck, and then to his hair. You wanted to touch it. To touch him. To help, take away the tension, alleviate the pain. You'd thought of this before. Never out of pity but you couldn't pretend they weren't selfish thoughts. You weren't sure if you were so eager to be useful because you liked him or liked how he made you feel. It was probably both. You liked the way he made you feel because you liked him.
Rick straightened his back, turning before you could realize. He was looking to a box of tools on the shelf opposite him in the garage, his eyes briefly meeting yours as he turned, before looking to the box. Suddenly you felt a bit short of breath. You were going to pretend you hadn't been looking at him but you couldn't react quick enough before he doubled back to make eye contact with you. Your face felt warm and you were all to aware of how your thighs stuck to the washing machine in the humid air. He hadn't said anything yet but you were already working out how to change the topic of a conversation that hadn't even started. Promptly breaking the eye contact and looking to the device on the counter, you sucked in a breath and broke the silence that had settled since he'd stopped working,
"Did you need a different tool?"
Rick responded with a noise of confirmation before taking his eyes off you and moving a step towards his discarded coat to find his flask. You thought for a moment, deciding to work against your better judgement and try and be helpful to a man who needed no help. Getting up for the first time since you'd sat a few hours earlier, you moved towards the storage shelf of the garage and reached up to pull out the box of science junk Rick had look at just a moment ago. Hearing him take a swig from his flask as you balance the box in your grip, you turned towards him, box in hand, and walked back to his side of the garage holding it out towards him. Having been looking down into the box at the various trinkets to avoid his look, you were surprised to be meeting his eyes when you did look up.
"Is um..."
You did your best to smile at him without making him feel opposed to about your participation in his project.
"Is what you need in here?"
You lifted the box a little and angled it toward him. He looked from you, to into the box and shuffled a bit closer while moving his hands to start searching through the items in the box. The proximity of your position to him made you feel confused. It was warm. It felt to normal. To safe. Comfortable enough to make you want more. Which made it feel wrong. You shouldn't be doing this to yourself. You knew that. It felt sad. Why didn't you just hand the box to him. You could've set it on the counter. He jerked the box towards himself to dig more and in turn, pulled you maybe an inch closer and suddenly it didn't matter. You could be across the room and still feel warm. You would still feel him. Whether Rick wanted to or not, he'd carved out a place for himself in your heart and regardless of how close he was or where he was in the room, maybe even where he was in the galaxy, you'd feel warm if it was him.
"It's not here...it should be. Fucking Morty digging through my shit..."
He continued to grumble as he, in a fluid motion, picked the box out of your hands and moved around you to roughly push it back on a random place on the shelf. It was a bit disappointing after all the overthinking you'd put into trying to be useful, and you felt your determination to be helpful slipping as you folded your arms and looked back to the unfinished device. Maybe Rick had noticed since he interrupted your train of thought as he sighed,
"It's fine..."
Rick readjusted his sleeves and pushed them back above his elbows.
"Don't need to have it, just would've made this shit quicker."
He rubbed his eyes while moving back towards the work bench to continue his project without the preferred tools. You shuffled after him, coming to stand next to him at the counter to inspect the device. Leaning closer and over the counter to examine the various parts of it while Rick began picking it back up, one of your feet hit something under the cabinet. You took a step back and got on your knees to peek under it. Normally, you'd squat down and pull whatever it was out from under the cabinet blindly, but in Rick's garage? not a safe bet. So you decided to look before you grabbed. It looked like another random science gadget that you couldn't possibly recognize the use for. Choosing to take the risk and assume the item was safe to grab, you took it out from under the cabinet. Thoughtlessly, you set your hand on Rick's shoulder while examining the tool in your other hand,
"You been missing this? It was under the cabinet..."
You trailed off on the sentence, turning to look at him, holding out the tool. His brows scrunched together and he gave a small breathy laugh before he replied,
"I might've been."
He turned to grab it and your hand on his shoulder trailed down to hold his upper arm. He immediately put tool to use on his project and it dawned on you that this was what he was looking for. You lit up excitedly and squeezed his arm,
"Oh! I'm glad I was able to help."
As soon as the words left your mouth, your hand froze and your smile fell. Rick didn't need help. He didn't want help. Certainly didn't need it from you, or anyone else. He'd made that clear at least once every time you'd heard him speak. Now, you braced yourself for Rick to shrug you off and respond with alcohol fueled vulgarity. For all you effort to be discarded. This was good. It was better like this, with all the walls. The walls kept you both safe. You waited for the words to come.
He spoke and you remained rigid. He spoke, but it was softer than you'd ever heard him. He wasn't looking at you and you almost could've missed it,
"Thank you."
...
Your brain lit up like a firework. You were so eager to draw another praise from him, but this could be enough. It was more than enough. You knew better than to offer any type of "You're welcome" so you settled with another squeeze of his arm before gently moving away.
The smile never left your face as you sat on the far end of the counter, much closer than the washing machine was, and began to count the wrinkles in Rick's shirt.

At the bakery that is not-quite factory-large, mainly because it is located inside of a grocery store, and most companies know better than to expose the average innocent consumer to the labyrinthine machinery that keeps them supplied with consumables and non-perishables and plastic lawn flamingos in a variety of eye-watering hues, and because the parking lot would have to sacrifice significant acreage of its available spaces if the grocery store were to be renovated to accommodate such an expansive bakery erupting from the side of the building like a goiter of concrete and rebar and chimneys, and finally because the typical consumer base available for fresh bread is neither populous nor ravenous enough to consume manufactured bread product at the appropriate rate to ensure material-to-profit efficiency that justifies the continued expense of said materials, notwithstanding the man-hours involved in daily operations, there are a pair of sort of upright four-person- occupancy metal coffins just the perfect size for the regular dimensions of the machine-tooled heat-proof slotted metal carts on which the cashiers-cum-bakers place machine-tooled heat-proofed metal trays which, for all the regularity of their design, have taken on unavoidable personality in the distinct marblings of soot and other oven markings, even to such an extent that a cashier who has served as baker long enough has likely given monikers to the most veteran of trays based on the perception in the discoloration of some pattern or symbol categorized within the rudimentary database of the human mind, and on each of these trays is a regular machine-cut slip of baker's parchment bearing frozen regular portions of machine-mixed dough, or in some cases even frozen machine-baked bread simply in need of the dehydrating and warming that an upright family-sized coffin-shaped baking oven might provide, and the first of these is such an oven after all, and in addition to the baking of the machine-mixed dough portions, typically six o' clock in the morning will find it used to do just that.
