20 questions for fic writers
Thank you for inviting me, @chrononautintraining!
1. how many works do you have on ao3?

2. what’s your total ao3 word count?
1,392,316
3. what fandoms do you write for?
I tend to be a serial fandom monogamist; right now I'm writing for CQL/The Untamed, but my other biggest fandoms were White Collar and Hockey RPF (biggest in terms of how much I wrote for them, not the size of the fandom).
4. what are your top 5 fics by kudos?
So Wise We Grow and its sequel, it may be that the gulfs will wash us down (Star Trek AOS); Unorthodox Methods (SPN/White Collar crossover); Living Proof (White Collar); and Concord (The Untamed).
5. do you respond to comments? why or why not?
Almost always! If I'm feeling really low-energy, I may not reply to comments that are solely emojis, but I try to respond to those as well with at least a thank-you. The only exception to my general policy of responding is comments where I seriously cannot tell if they are positive or negative (e.g., "I hate you for making me cry" - I get that one a fair amount), because I don't want to be like "I'm glad you liked it!" when they actually didn't - I feel like that would make me look really arrogant lol. I respond to comments because I treasure them and want to encourage folks to keep commenting!
6. what is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
Definitely Hands Open, Eyes Closed... and I was so bothered by it that I wrote a 200k follow-up getting those characters to their happy ending!
7. what’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
Oh, jeez, I almost only do happy endings, so that's tough. I am partial to the ending of Dangerous, which is happy both interpersonally (WWX and LWJ are together! they have a baby!) and politically (that baby is going to blow up entrenched prejudices! yay!)
8. do you get hate on any fics?
I don't, and I have no idea why not, beyond the fact that I usually have anon commenting turned off. Don't get me wrong, I do get strongly negative comments sometimes, but nothing I would characterize as "hate."
9. do you write smut? if so, what kind?
Oh, definitely. I guess I would say I tend toward tender, talky, d/s-inflected smut, but ultimately I do whatever the situation between the characters calls for.
10. do you write crossovers? what’s the craziest one you’ve written?
Almost never - it's pretty much just Unorthodox Methods.
11. have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not to my knowledge.
12. have you ever had a fic translated?
Yes! I've been fortunate to have multiple fics translated, especially my hockey RPF fics.
13. have you ever co-written a fic before?
Nope!
14. what’s your all time favorite ship?
See above re: serial monogamist - right now I would swear that it's Wangxian 4EVA but check back in in a couple years.
15. what’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
Definitely my Wangxian lawyer AU. I have big chunks of it written, but it would be more than 100k and I have so many other WIPs in line ahead of it. It'll probably end up as WIP Amnesty, though it breaks my heart to say it.
16. what are your writing strengths?
Dialogue and worldbuilding.
17. what are your writing weaknesses?
Physical description is often an afterthought. I default to describing lighting when I have to set a scene. I struggle to create a sense of the passing of time unless I have an external scaffolding to set the story on - in hockey RPF, the rhythm of the hockey season could give me that scaffold, but in my fics for CQL, the struggle is back.
18. thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
Best kept to a minimum, when it comes to actual dialogue, but when it comes to individual terms (Wen-guniang, hai shi, zhiji, etc., and Russian and Czech terms in hockey rpf), I do it pretty liberally. It's good for English speakers to have to look stuff up sometimes. It builds character. 😂
19. first fandom you wrote for?
Stargate: Atlantis!
20. favorite fic you’ve written?
My favorite fic I've written is actually a WIP Amnesty piece I never finished (but which readers have told me is satisfying as-is, thankfully): The Words in Your Head, an X-Men: First Class modern AU in which Charles and Erik are college students who help start a GSA (that's a gay-straight alliance, for those of you who were not queer teenagers in the late nineties or early aughts 😂) at Raven's high school. It's so personal to me (the kid who started her own high school's GSA 20 years ago) and carries so much of my own feelings about gender and queerness and queer community, and I feel so tender about the characters. I think, ultimately, the fact that it made me feel so raw is the reason I couldn't take it across the line to a polished final draft. But I will love it forever.

I'm still sorting through things I need to address from 2022, and posting more of these artist table photos is one of them. These photos come from the Spring 2022 Kids Con, which happened at the Everett Arena in Concord, NH. It was such a loud and cramped venue, which was even more noticeable since the temperature reached into the high 80s. In May! I was scheduled to host an illustration workshop there, but I'm so glad it was pushed off until the October event.
Several years ago, I tabled at a comic convention in a hockey rink in May and I was freezing. On the other hand, the Everett Arena was too warm. I ran into several friends of mine who were also tabling at Kids Con, including Magenta Arts, whose table was next to mine!
Afterward, Chris and I went to Chuck's Barbershop for dinner in downtown Concord and ran into Mr. Hinkle Draws again! The restaurant had so much character, and the food was excellent. I will definitely go there again in the future!

Or for example he is going to build a hyperloop that will revolutionize transportation. It’s only going to cost 10 billion of our Earth dollars to build and it’s going to be like a "cross between a Concorde and a railgun and an air hockey table" according to him. It’s going to use magnetic levitation and vacuum-sealed tubes to transport people at 700 mph to their destinations. It also never worked and was never even built or even funded, but it may have slowed or stymied support for California’s planned high speed rail build. High speed rail is, unlike the hyperloop, something that can be built and would transport people at high speeds. You might even think that the world’s smartest man only proposed the hyperloop specifically to prevent high speed rail from being built, but you may only think that because you are not the world’s smartest man who happens to own a car company, and also maybe because he admitted to his biographer that this was exactly what he hoped would happen to the high speed rail plan, in the context of his proposed hyperloop.

Everybody else thinks Butthead is a tiresome ignorant socially maladapted fool, and they think this because that is what Butthead is. It strikes me that every Butthead needs a Beavis. Without Beavis, Butthead would be left with nothing but the opinion of everybody else. And it strikes me that Twitter is full of Beavises, all ready to tell the world’s smartest man that everything he does is epic and hilarious, even though he can’t actually think of anything smart to do or anything funny to say. So that’s interesting.”

Today I’m sharing this piece by Brett Pardy about NHL’s Military Appreciation Nights.
Brett is a PhD Candidate at McGill University and a sessional instructor in Media Studies at the University of the Fraser Valley. His research studies the emotional impacts of media on learning/unlearning about individualism, racism, masculinity, and/or mental health.

Each winter, six of the seven Canadian NHL teams host Armed Forces Appreciation Night, where teams ask season ticket holders to donate tickets to members of the Canadian military.
My criticism is not a statement against people serving in the military, who may or may hold these beliefs, but a statement against the institution of the military. Among the ideas militarism brings are beliefs such:
men “are natural protectors” and women “should be grateful for manly protection”
hierarchies of command are both good and inevitable
the division of the world into allies and enemies
the use of force to resolve difference
Hmm… do these values seem familiar? The worst traits of the NHL! The NHL may be fond of calling soldiers “the real heroes”, but they are happy to stress the resemblance between the cultures. There’s a reason this is the only profession which teams want their fans to “thank” for service to the nation, despite many other groups providing more for the country (while receiving less recognition). If the military provides the highest form of citizenship, and the NHL resembles it, then the exultation of military serves as a shield against having to address why it doesn’t better and more accurately reflect the Canadian population.
The NHL needs a healthier masculinity and this can not happen in concordance with militarization. Canadians can not take comfort in their supposed moral superiority to Americans while accepting neoconservative politics like militarization. For the NHL to become a more progressive space, fans must participate in de-militarizing hockey culture and find a better form of citizenship for athletes to model.

Yay, thank you for playing! Such fun questions to think about. 🥰 These questions are about favorite lines/scenes, most-read or most-kudos'ed fics, and word or phrases I use a lot. The ask game post is here!
9. What’s your favorite line(s) or scene(s) that you have written?
Oof, this is probably the hardest question on the list. The scene that immediately comes to mind is the parking garage scene from To Be Seen Aright, which I did a commentary on here. It's one of only two scenes I've ever cried while writing (the other is the lotus scene from Dangerous) and I think it succeeds in capturing something very deeply felt and visceral.
Honorable mentions for favorite lines go to:

Trying to pick one line from The Words in Your Head was so hard. I put my best writing of all time in that fic and then didn't finish it - what's wrong with you, Dea?! 🤣 I guess it's a tie between “I think you and I took different lessons from history,” and “Is it better?” Erik asks, staring him down. “To die by incompetence, or indifference, rather than malice? Or are you just as dead?”
10. What are your top five fics by kudos or by reads?
By reads, it's: So Wise We Grow, its short sequel it may be that the gulfs will wash us down, my two Hockey RPF Sid/Geno longfics, They Say Love Heals All Wounds and To Be Seen Aright, and my longest White Collar fic, Living Proof.

This is info that anyone could find by sorting my works page, so I assume the question is also asking how I feel about the results lol. I feel okay about them! Inevitably, if you've been writing for a long time, your most-read or most-kudos'ed work is unlikely to be your best work, because you get better over time (so your newest work is best) but your oldest work has had more time to accumulate hits and kudos. Plus, longfics and fics in juggernaut fandoms will do better (that Supernatural crossover has a wild number of kudos for a fic that's only 3,000 words!). So I'm at peace with the fact that these are not lists of my five best fics or my five favorite fics.
(For the CQL folks, my CQL work doesn't show up until #8 in kudos (Concord, as I expected), and #17 in hits (River-to-the-Sea Sure, which I did not expect, given its "Abortion" tag and Concord's popularity - despite my banging the drum for other A/B/O configurations, though, the people love an alpha LWJ/omega WWX fic, I guess!).
15. Are there words, phrases, mannerisms or scenes you tend to use a lot?
Oh, boy, are there ever. Is there any fanfic writer who has not been tormented by the paucity of ways to describe how people's eyes move when they smile?? I wouldn't say there are scenes I tend to use a lot, and for mannerisms, I try to stick to "canonical" mannerisms (Wei Wuxian's slouching and nose-rubbing, e.g., or Jin Ling's stubborn chin-thrust). But I find the metaphor of a dislocated joint being reduced so useful that I allow myself to use it once per fic if I want. 😂 After 132 fics, total originality of language is just not a feasible goal. And I have noticed that when describing a physical place, I tend to default to describing the lighting, and when describing a character's actions, I tend to default to describing where they are looking (down, away, making eye contact, etc.). There are also repetition concerns related to specific characters: for example, when writing Jin Ling or Jiang Cheng, I have to be careful or I'll use the word "scowl" five times per scene. 🤣 (I have given myself a pass for writing multiple fics where Wei Wuxian thinks about how good Lan Wangji looks in moonlight because I'm pretty sure that is a 100% accurate depiction of Wei Wuxian's internal monologue. 🤣)

le week-end dernier, je suis allé voir Cademon. Nous sommes allés au Concord Mills Aquarium et avons vu beaucoup de vie marine ! Nous avons traversé ce tunnel marin et avons regardé tous les requins, raies pastenagues et petits poissons nager. Ensuite, nous sommes allés chez Dave et Busters et avons joué au skew ball, au air hockey et au cademon joué au pac-man. J'ai battu Cademon au air hockey et skew ball ! Plus tard dans la soirée, je nous ai préparé un dîner : des pâtes au citron et des asperges, les préférées de Cademon ! Puis hier, j'ai eu ma leçon et j'ai monté Roxy, elle était tellement amusante

HERE’S WHAT YOU MISSED THIS WEEK (9.25-10.1.19):
NEW MUSIC:
· Pale Waves debuted a brand new pop-punk song titled “Tomorrow” at a gig in Glasgow last Monday. The band was also recently unveiled as the opening support for Halsey on her upcoming tour.
· State Champs released a new cover of Matchbox Twenty’s song, “Real World,” for the upcoming compilation album, Songs That Saved My Life Vol. 2. Hopeless Records and Sub City’s compilation benefits mental health and suicide prevention organizations.
· Pierce the Veil frontman Vic Fuentes announced that the band’s next album is “getting closer and closer” to completion. He recently took to Instagram to give fans an update about his life, as well as other band-related news.
· The Almost dropped their first new music since 2013, a song titled “Chokehold,” as well as unveiled plans for an upcoming full-length album and tour. The band, spearheaded by Underoath drummer/vocalist Aaron Gillespie, have recently signed to Fearless Records.
· Creeper teased their fans with cryptic, paranormal videos and tweets on their social media pages. Last November, they appeared to announce their breakup onstage in London, and recently played an intimate gig under the name “Fugitives of Heaven” in the same city.
· Waterparks dropped an emotional new track titled “High Definition,” as well as a music video, from their upcoming third studio album, Fandom. Lead singer Awsten Knight tweeted that the song is “probably [his] favorite thing [he’s] written.”
· Issues dropped a video for their new song, “Flexin,” that shows that features a star from RuPaul’s Drag Race. The video stars Farrah Moan, also known as former MySpace scene kid, Cameron Ugh.
· Bayside dropped the newest single, “Bury Me,” off their upcoming studio album, Interrobang. The band is also getting fans hyped by giving fans the chance to open for them with a “battle of the bands” contest.
· Dance Gavin Dance released an instrumental version of their 2011 album, Downtown Battle Mountain II. The newly released instrumental album comes after the release last month of the instrumental version of the band’s fourth album, Acceptance Speech.
· Disney’s Frozen 2 has unveiled the official soundtrack featuring covers of “Into the Unknown” by Panic! at the Disco, “Lost in the Woods” by Weezer and more. Country singer Kacey Musgraves has also signed on to put her own spin onto a track from the film.
· Go Radio announced their return six years after their final show. The band released a statement on Instagram, as well as a short video, that detailed their plans to make new music.
· Green Day will be unveiling a new song during a video montage that will air ahead of a National Hockey League game. The new song is called “Fire, Ready, Aim” and comes from the band’s upcoming album Father of All… out on February 7, 2020.
TOUR ANNOUNCEMENTS:
· All Time Low unveiled eight show dates in Los Angeles, Chicago and Sayreville, New Jersey, in celebration of the 10th anniversary of their studio album, Nothing Personal. Selling out almost immediately, they also announced they’d be re-recording the album and dropping a documentary on its making.
· Slam Dunk unveiled its first wave of acts for its 2020 festival. The stacked lineup includes Don Broco, Mayday Parade, State Champs, Four Year Strong, the Wonder Years, Motion City Soundtrack, Knuckle Puck, Bayside, Issues, Hands Like Houses, Ice Nine Kills and many more.
· Fans of Twenty One Pilots accused fellow music duo the Chainsmokers of copying the stage setup for The Bandito Tour after seeing the latter’s show. Both bands are currently on massive world tours with the former starting their tour last October.
· Waterparks have unveiled a series of acoustic shows that will take place at various music stores in the U.S. The band will be performing and signing their upcoming record Fandom at the five exclusive shows.
· Solo artist and former Panic! At The Disco guitarist Ryan Ross covered one of his former band’s songs at a show on Monday. Ross performed “Northern Downpour” at a gig in Arizona that he performed with the Dead End Kids Club, alongside Z Berg of the Young Veins.
OTHER NEWS:
· Starbucks recently announced the addition of a Jack Skellington-inspired Frappuccino to its secret menu. The drink consists of a pumpkin spice Frappuccino with a shot of chai syrup, and was created by fans of the Nightmare Before Christmas.
· Avril Lavigne responded in an interview with Billboard to comparisons that fellow pop singer Billie Eilish has been receiving to her music. She talked about how she feels she is similar to Eilish because they are both “individuals.”
· Panic! at the Disco unveiled they’re getting their own music pack in popular virtual reality rhythm game, Beat Saber. The pack will be dropping next week, with both the band and the game tweeting the news.
· AMC Theatres debuted a brand new ICEE drink inspired by the upcoming Addams Family animated film. The movie releases on October 11th and the drink, called a Spooky Clack Cherry ICEE, and is black in color.
· The Umbrella Academy, popular comic series turned Netflix show originally created by My Chemical Romance’s Gerard Way, announced its first spinoff. The 32-page comic book will be called Hazel and Cha Cha Save Christmas: Tales from the Umbrella Academy.
· Fall Out Boy bassist Pete Wentz was announced as a producer and music supervisor for a forthcoming Snapchat original short-form series dealing with mental health. Wentz will serve as both producer and musical supervisor for the series, bringing original music to the show.
· Founding Set It Off guitarist, Dan Clermont, announced his exit from the band after a five-month hiatus following allegations against an “unnamed member of the band.” Clermont also took to Twitter to comment on his departure.
· Concord Records has acquired the legendary Victory Records in an estimated multi-million-dollar deal. The iconic punk and emo label has been a mainstay in the scene for breaking major artists such as Taking Back Sunday, A Day to Remember and more.
