Behavioral Addiction
What do you think of when you hear the word addiction? For most of us an images of a homeless alcoholic or someone with a syringe in their arm. All very bleak images influenced by media stereotypes. And while that is the reality for some people - addiction has many different faces. For some addiction looks like gambling all night, every night, while their family sleeps, getting deeper and deeper into debt. For others, it’s the lure of pornography. Maybe they compulsively shop or cannot put down the gaming controller and go to sleep.
More and more professionals agree that these sort of compulsive behaviors can be classified as addictions and meet many of the same criteria. Underlying them all, whether a substance or behavioral addiction, is something that the individual is trying to cope with, hide from or control. That root cause can be anything - low self esteem, mental illness and trauma are just some of many things that can lead to someone struggling with addiction.
Behavioral addictions often start because the person experiences a “high” of some sort when engaging in that behavior which releases dopamine - telling the brain that whatever they have just done is worth doing again. For some people, this is intoxicating - they keep repeating the behavior until it is a compulsive behavior. They will carry on doing it despite any negative consequences for themselves or others.
It’s easy to let someone carry on with these sort of behaviors because they don’t seem instantly harmful but someone with a behavioral addiction needs treatment and support to deal with what is going on underneath. So, how can we help?
Talk to them - don’t ignore the issue! Let them know you understand and are there to support them. They may not be receptive at first but just remain open and available - they will know you are there when they are ready.
Treatment - help them research and get the support they need. Recovery will come when they get to the root issue and they will very likely need a professional to help them work through this and change their behavior.
Support group - many people dealing with addiction find being part of a group of people also in recovery can help keep them going and manage relapses. Help them find the right group for them, locally and at a time that won’t conflict with other obligations.
Look after yourself - we are no use to any one if we aren’t functioning. So establish good boundaries with the person you are supporting and find someone that you can talk to.
You can’t go back and make a new start, but you can start right now and make a brand new ending.

Chapter 1.3
Somewhere along the line, I started collecting other types of cards…football…hockey…basketball…soccer…yo mtv raps…marvel cards, etc. After…maybe…5 years of collecting, I realized I had an obsession, and I didn’t like it.
There was a rich kid who lived down the mountain who admired my tenacity in collecting sports cards. I remember I had another card that was worth quite a bit…a Charles Barkley 86-87 Fleer rookie card. It was worth around $100 at the time but had a huge crease across the middle. He came over one time to take a look at my collection and said to me ‘I’ll buy your whole collection for $300.’ At the time, $300 was an incredible amount of money for a 9 year old kid…I got a $10 a week allowance at the time and had to put in a lot of work to get that $10 allowance, so $300 was astronomical.
I remember I deliberated…I talked with my parents…I stressed back and forth for a few days…and then he gave me an ultimatum: “This offer is only good for one more day.” I didn’t like how obsessed I had become, so I said to him “OK, but I’m keeping the Berra card.” He agreed and the next day, his mother drove him over to my house and I packed up everything and I said goodbye to my cards.

Getting Unstuck From An Addiction Or Compulsive Behavior…
Today I’m going to take a chance and explore some tricky but important concepts with you.
There’s a fellow in the UK called Jamie Smart.
Jamie Smart lives up to his name – he’s smart.
He tackles difficult topics and makes you think.
Jamie is best known for his work around “Clarity.”
I’ll give you a resource later if you want to know more about Jamie and clarity.
But today I want to discuss his thoughts around addiction, compulsive habits and making changes.
I consider it important for people who are going through addiction of any type to understand what is going on. Jamie’s work helps us understand so we can move forward and make changes.
You see, it's difficult to move forward until you know what is going on. You’re stuck.
At the core is a misunderstanding people have about feelings and why they’re “tricked” into being addicted to a behavior.
Understanding how your mind works is key to finding freedom from life-damaging patterns.
Jamie explains the misunderstanding that drives addictive patterns is the mistaken belief our feelings can come from somewhere other than our own thoughts.
Jamie cites this common example:
For example, every adult knows a child’s security blanket involves a trick of the mind as there really isn’t anything about a blanket that can “give” a child a feeling of security or comfort. It just seems to the child as though the feelings come from the blanket – something from outside them.
Consider how often we look to adult “security blankets” or “teddy bears” such as work, possessions, money, food, relationships, substances and other behaviors, as though they’re different?
When you have feelings of stress, boredom, emotional discomfort it often seems these are coming from somewhere other than our current thoughts such as our workload, the boss, an argument, your bank balance.
We equally feel our feelings of relief, peace and excitement are coming from an external factor such as a drink, a drug, a cigarette, food, gambling, – which are all habitual behaviors.
Jamie argues both sets of feelings though are coming from our own thoughts in the moment.
Every good feeling you’ve experienced, including those you’ve attributed to a substance or behavior, have really come from a source within you.
The same can also be said for any uncomfortable feelings. Certainly, external factors can trigger a feeling but the feeling itself comes from your thought in the moment and purely from within you.
Let’s pause here as this an important point in Jamie’s teachings. He’s trying to make us see the deceptive trick we can all get caught up in with this misunderstanding.
The misunderstanding is we associate many of our feelings with external factors but in reality these feelings come from our thoughts in the moment.
Thought in the moment is a term Jamie uses a lot with this topic. Simply put it’s the thought you have in the moment you generate the feeling.
So we all possess the ability for inner peace, security and well being and we already tap into this without realizing it to get the happiness feelings.
We may need help and guidance from others if we’re stuck in bad patterns but we have innate capacity within us already to "fix ourselves."
This last sentence is vitally important for you to recognize because it’s a primary role of therapists – including hypnotherapists - to help guide and coach people to the resources and tools they already have within themselves to solve their addiction problems be it: smoking, food, alcohol, drugs, etc.
As promised you can learn more about Jamie Smart and his Clarity work by going here >>>
Let me know your own thoughts about the topic discussed today, and do check out Jamie's information... it may just change your life.
