The property has a C-store and a fully operational restaurant called ''Rocket Burger.''

They don't specify if the things in the museum come with it.

I don't know, there doesn't seem to be much in here. A few displays, t-shirts for sale, souvenirs, and a couple arcade games.

Federal prosecutors today announced charges against four people allegedly involved in a massive dinosaur bone smuggling scheme. Thousands of pounds of dinosaurs and other fossils were secretly excavated from government lands in Utah, according to court documents. Some were sold at gem shows, and others were shipped to China after being mislabeled as construction materials or gems. The poaching and subterfuge, court documents allege, lasted at least from March 2018 to earlier this year.

“By removing and processing these dinosaur bones to make consumer products for profit, tens of thousands of pounds of dinosaur bones have lost virtually all scientific value, leaving future generations unable to experience the science and wonder of these bones,” United States Attorney Trina Higgins said in a press statement.

"It’s certainly a significant volume of dinosaur bones," says David Evans, a paleontologist at the Royal Ontario Museum who’s not involved in the case. He adds that it’s unusual for so much material to be removed from government lands, and that many people likely aren’t aware of the scale of the black market on U.S. dinosaur specimens.

Some of the dinosaur bones were fashioned into commercial products, including dinosaur dig kits, carved figurines, knives, jewelry, and polished bowling ball-like spheres, according to court documents.

Before now, one of the biggest known dinosaur fossil busts occurred in 2006, when 8,000 pounds of fossils—including thousands of dinosaur eggs, petrified pine cones, and prehistoric crabs—were seized by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents at a gem and mineral show in Tucson, Arizona. Those items had been illegally taken from Argentina.

In Utah, dinosaur bones found on private lands may be legally excavated and sold, but it is a crime to dig up and sell fossils discovered on federal or state lands. Charges against the four Utah defendants, who are scheduled to have their initial court appearance later today in Salt Lake City, include conspiracy against the U.S., false labeling, theft of U.S. property, money laundering, and attempted smuggling of goods, among others.

A Dino 🦕 Trafficking Scheme

Beneath Utah’s surface, there’s a rich cache of dinosaur fossils, revealing details about prehistoric animals such as carnivorous allosauruses and spine-backed stegosauruses. Almost three-quarters of the state consists of public lands managed by federal or state agencies, and recent fossil finds there include a huge collection of Utahraptors and an entirely new species, a big-nosed distant relative of Triceratops.

Court documents describing the years-long Utah poaching operation allege that Vint and Donna Wade purchased illegally obtained bones and other fossils to sell at U.S. gem and mineral shows and also to ship to China, and that Jordan Willing and his father Steve Willing trafficked dinosaur bones to China using their company JMW Sales. The documents also allege that two unnamed and unindicted coconspirators illegally excavated fossils from federal lands and sold them off to the Wades.

In total, the Wades sold over $1 million in paleontological material to the Willings, according to the court documents, which were filed in the U.S. District Court in the District of Utah.

The fossil heist also led to $3 million in damages, the federal government claims, including large restoration and repair expenses and the costs of losses to science.

During the years of the alleged smuggling activity, the fossil shipments did sometimes run into problems. One shipment of dinosaur bones that was sent from Scottsdale, Arizona, to China in March 2019 was falsely labeled as items including jasper and wood, but the cargo was ultimately held up in China “due to high radiation levels,” court documents state. The fossilized materials had apparently picked up natural radioactive material over time. (Investigators can sometimes discover the origin of fossils based on radioactive signatures in the specimens that provide clues about where they were buried.)

Paleontologists typically remove dinosaur bones using a methodological process designed to limit damage and preserve evidence found in the fossils and their surroundings—information about when dinosaurs lived, what species they were, and sometimes even how they behaved.

Amateur diggers hunting for recognizable body parts to sell, however, generally do not take such care. Federal prosecutors claim that the loss to science from this poaching ring is largely incalculable.

This number is even higher when we consider the fact that large numbers of low-quality or damaged items are discarded at the first sorting.

What happens to secondhand clothes that don’t sell? Estimates from the United States show that only about 20% of textile donations are sold through thrift shops, while the remaining 80% are sold to resellers [editor's Note: by "reseller" this article is not referring to Depop sellers the top post is referring to, they mean commercial resellers], sorters, and graders, repurposed into low-quality textile materials for stuffing or rags, and sent for disposal. 45% of this remaining amount is domestically and internationally reused and resold, 50% is used for low-grade textile needs, and 5% is landfilled or incinerated. The fiber-to-fiber recycling only amounts to about 1% of this amount. (NIST, 2022, Facilitating a Circular Economy for Textiles Workshop Report) . Almost half of all second-hand clothing donations that don’t sell are exported to different countries. While African countries receive the majority of low-quality items, Latin America receives the medium-quality pieces, and the high-quality, branded items are exported to Japan which has a rich second-hand clothing market. (Hansen, 2010) . It is estimated that between 40-75% of textile donations that don’t sell are resold in bulk to textile sorters, graders, and brokers by charitable donations like thrift shops. These textile recyclers across the United States and Northwestern Europe transport their bulk second-hand textile purchases to warehouses and sorting plants, where the textiles are sorted according to different properties like fiber content, weight, quality, fabric type, and garment type. This intensive sorting labor is often done by underpaid immigrant workers in poor working conditions. (Hansen, 2010) . According to Southern California Goodwill’s vice president of retail operations Ray Tellez, Goodwill locations across the Southern Californian region track how long each piece is displayed for sale in the retail locations and the pieces that aren’t sold in 4 weeks are sent to Goodwill outlet stores. These outlet stores usually sell items for lower prices and per weight (i.e. 99 cents per pound of clothing) in an effort to keep donated and second-hand textiles out of landfills. While there are regional differences in how Goodwills across North America handle this process, this general outline of the process is the same in different regions. (Strutner, 2021) (Goodwill Outlet Store Locator) . According to Brittany Dickinson, who is the manager of sustainability for Goodwill Industries International, only half of all donated clothing is suitable for sale to retail customers through online or offline stores. The remaining half of donations are either sold to Goodwill outlets or to salvage dealers. Of the 50% that’s approved for sale to retail customers, only 38-48% of pieces are sold within the approved time frame. The rest is first sent to Goodwill outlets and later sold in bulk to salvage dealers. (Chiu, 2023) . Buffalo Exchange, which is another popular thrift store in North America, purchases second-hand clothes from their owners rather than accepting donations. For pieces that aren’t in a good enough condition to be bought by Buffalo Exchange and resold, they collect donations for local non-profits. The second-hand pieces that do not get sold in their regular retail locations are sent to their outlet stores in Texas and Arizona. (Porter, 2019)

there is so much unsold clothing from the secondhand market in the United States that we have collapsed the textile industries of several other countries by exporting unsold thrift store donations to the global south. there is no shortage of second hand clothing and never will be. resellers could not possibly buy enough donated clothing from thrift stores to ever make a dent in the global supply even if their market segment (which is borderline nonexistent) was double the size it is now. ask anyone who has actually worked at a Goodwill or Value Village about this, they'll tell you the vast majority of donated clothing goes straight to outlets/landfill/exports, and the majority of the remaining clothing that actually ends up on racks sits there until its time expires and it ends up at the outlet/export/landfill. there is no conspiracy of Etsy resellers taking all the good clothes away from you. it's an entirely invented moral panic from TikTok and I don't think the people I see posting about it ever actually shop secondhand, and if they do they've never been to a Goodwill outlet where they sell (yes, even plus size) clothing shoes and textiles for a dollar a POUND.
