thinking about sophie building her confidence up as she’s integrated into a world of support and guidance, even if from the shadows before her conception even started. how despite all the pain and fear, she has a support system.

thinking about fitz’ tall legacy and history of status quo to uphold. the heavy sword that dangles from the hands of the vacker patriarchy looms over his sense of identity. how his emotions are left alone in a family so large and revered.

difference between false cognates and false friends:

cognates are words that share an etymological origin (e.g. father in english and père in french are both descended from proto-indo-european *ph₂tḗr)

false cognates are words that don’t share an origin despite looking like they do (e.g. much in english vs mucho in spanish)

false cognates can mean the same thing!

false friends are words that don’t mean the same thing despite looking similar (e.g. gift in english means present while Gift in german means poison)

false friends can be cognates!

So I have two a priori conlangs that I'm working on right now, they're two related languages spoken by arctic hunter-gatherers on a small peninsular subcontinent in the conworld I'm making.

Anyway, I absolutely love how weird the cognates ended up being, like they're so fun. If I have a word in the protolanguage I have literally no clue whether it's gonna turn out super similar or nothing alike in the two daughter languages. Okay examples, let's take the word for 'berry'. Protolanguage *nhathan'ngha [nˤaˈtˤan.ŋˤa] Léna: nátángá [ná.tá.ŋá] Kkeṛhaqom: naṭannga [nä.ʈ͡ʂäŋ.ŋä]

Like okay that's relatively similar, fair enough. How about the word for 'wind'?
