Me encantaron todos los Mexicanismos en el comic, en especial la apariencia de Coyolxauhqui despedazada usado como comedia, ¡me morí a carcajadas!

Donají es fantástica, pero no me puedes mostrar un chamaco con alas sin que lo dibuje. Le di un cuervo sinaloense de amigo porque parece ser la única especie de cuervo que vive cerca de Oaxaca, donde me parece que es la aventura. Ojalá adiviné correctamente.

Summary: Donají is a fearless Zapotec girl who, even though she’s only fifteen, is heralded as a hero by her village. In Codex Black, Donají sets out on an adventure--accompanied by the god that lives inside of her poncho--to find her missing father. Along the way, she meets a 17-year-old winged Mexica warrior named Itzcacalotl, and over time their temporary partnership blooms into an incredible friendship.  The search brings the young pair closer to danger and deeper into mystery than either could have predicted. What exactly was Donají’s father involved with? And how did a simple search for a missing relative lead Donají and Itzcacalotl into a fight with a terrifying bat monster to defend an entire village?!

Codex Black (Book One): A Fire Among Clouds by Camilo Moncada Lozano

I really enjoyed this book! Not only was the story a great read, but I learned a bit about the culture of the Mesoamerica area. I also loved the artwork and the outfits of all of the characters.

The story starts with a forbidden ritual where we get a view of what I can only assume is going to be the Big Bad as the volumes progress. Then, we meet Itzcacalotl, a Mexca warrior who becomes separated from his group and winds up in a forgotten temple where he gains magical powers. There's also Donají, a Zapotec girl who has a poncho that gives her great strength as it is inhabited by a god.

Itzcacalotl and Donají cross paths as Donají is on a quest to find her father, who vanished 11 years ago. Together, they start to uncover unrest amongst the tribes and the demons that are attacking villages while finding small clues about Donají's father.

There's a name glossary in the back to help you pronounce the names and places that are throughout the pages, as well as information about the gods and mythical creatures that show up.

It was quite a long graphic novel, packed with laughs, adventure, and more, so I was surprised that this was a volume 1. Can't wait to pick up the next one.

Everyone should read "Codex black" by Camilo Moncada Lozano: it's well-written, well-drawn and well-researched.

There’s no Codex Black update this week, but here’s a little piece of trivia: Many of my character designs for the comic are closely based on sculptures. Since the story has only developed in Oaxaca so far, it’s mostly Zapotec sculptures. And the same is true for the antagonists’ masks.

I also often look at codices, but I use them mostly for clothing and ornamentation, while sculptures are my go-to for faces and masks, as they give me an idea on how the people I’m representing actually represented themselves.
