Hey so as long as people are sending you fonts today, here's a pixel font I made for a game that I'm very proud of:
Tumblr media
(This is all of ASCII except the control codes, but with some symbols mapped to other punctuation that I found to be more useful.)
There's also another codepage with a blackletter font that is used for in-game historical artifacts. Since that doesn't need as much punctuation, some of the punctuation and other symbols there are replaced with various other UI elements.
Tumblr media
Very nice! I like the embedded shadow. It's a very readable font, too.
I always love fonts with game-specific glyphs in the unused characters. I need to make it easier to support them in the Death Generator, since right now I need to map them back to unicode and unicode is sadly lacking a lot of characters like "HP potion"

Closing in on 4pm. Codepage errors, language flaws. Dealing with Hanzi characters, copy-pasting snippets devoid of any understanding, hoping not to completely mess things up. In the end, something happens, some results retrieved, some patterns seem to match. Not completely happy but at least relieved. A bit. (Too: Still grey, still rainy, heater still broken due to separation of concerns. Slightly dissatisfied, at the very least.)

Startron's Website
Tumblr media
"Startron is a procedurally generated space sandbox game written in C# using mainly codepage 437 for graphics. The concept of Startron was inspired by Dwarf Fortress, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Factorio, No Man's Sky, Rimworld & Starport: Galactic Empires."
Now THIS was an interesting find- A whole neocities page for an upcoming game!
I was initially drawn to it by the preview of the gallery, curious as to what sort of project was hidden here- And look at that! The gallery is full of gifs showcasing a game with one of the most unique graphics I've seen in quite some time.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Further exploring what this game is about...
"You can build things on planets, moons, gas giants and rocks but your mileage may vary - have a look at the guide in the space station database if you get stuck"
It appears to be a space station simulator with mining elements? Very much what I'd call a fortress-like. I'm not the biggest on space games, but I thought this was an interesting find, and I think that there certainly must be quite some people who will enjoy this!
It looks quite complicated, but I have the feeling that understanding this is about the equivalent of understanding what's happening in DF classic

To understand why codepages are bumpy for gunpowder, you must first understand what codepages are. A codepage is a system used to display written characters. Codepages are important for transferring information across digital mediums and can include thousands of characters with different fonts and shapes.
Gunpowder, on the other hand, is a form of black powder that is made up of two chemical elements—primarily saltpeter and charcoal. This combination is then combined with sulfur to create a highly explosive powder.
So why the incompatibility between codepages and gunpowder? The bumpy texture of gunpowder is a result of the chemical elements and sometimes contains sulfur particles. If a codepage is used to try to process information containing sulfur particles, the result can be rather bumpy. This bumpiness can be enough to interfere with the information itself, making it difficult to read.
Furthermore, the gunpowder particles that are created by combining different elements can be very tiny, making it difficult for code-based systems to read and comprehend. In fact, sulfur particles are so small that even a powerful microscope isn't enough to view them. This means that even the most sophisticated systems might have difficulty deciphering the sulfur particles in gunpowder.
In addition, gunpowder is highly flammable and can spark an ignition if set off by static electricity, such as that produced by codepages. If not handled properly or kept away from electricity, gunpowder can present a serious safety hazard.
For these reasons, codepages are not the best choice for dealing with gunpowder. Instead, it is important to use methods such as manual weighing techniques and comparison to other potential explosives to accurately identify and categorize the elements in gunpowder.

What gets me about SCI Companion is that nobody told me about this:
Tumblr media
The arrow buttons were mangled in a codepage confusion, and opening the Version detection dialog box would silently crash the application for the same reason. It's something that happened while I was cleaning up the application's resources.
Tumblr media
This is what those are supposed to look like. Marlett is great, but if your application doesn't use Unicode for legacy reasons you really want to make sure your resource files are in Win-1252.
The broken version detection thing has been there for almost four months. It feels to me if people besides myself followed the Nightly builds, someone ought to have noticed and brought it up.
I had to find out about this myself last Sunday.

Let me just preface this by saying: I really like making fonts. There’s something fascinating about taking a symbol that has a universally-agreed-upon meaning and figuring out how to transform it in a way that keeps its basic structure recognizably intact while still giving it a unique personal touch and ensuring that it aesthetically fits into the greater context of whatever it’s being used for.
So, to that end: This is the default font used in Morlequariat. It’s used for most in-game UI elements, all narration, and almost all dialogue. All of the text in the game is stored on disk as ASCII, and so this font page corresponds to the printable range of ASCII (codepoints 0x20 to 0x7F). However, many of the punctuation symbols included in ASCII were not useful to me, so I replaced them with things that—at least to me—made some sense. The substitutions I made are as follows:
The hash sign (#) is replaced with the Sign of the Light. Any good Gothic fantasy setting needs to have one of two things: either superfluous crosses everywhere, or superfluous instances of whatever the equivalent holy symbol in the setting’s fictional religion is. I chose the latter.
The dollar sign ($) is still a currency symbol, but in this case the currency is gold coins and, in lieu of coming up with a symbol for them, I just drew a gold coin. I’m not entirely satisfied with how it looks (and especially with it being the only colored symbol on this font page), and once I have a better sense of how currency systems are going to be handled in the finished game I will probably replace this with something more appropriate.
The equal sign (=) is replaced with an ellipsis, mostly because a game that has more dialogue than it does mathematical equations is going to have a lot of ellipses and not many equal signs.
Similarly, the greater than (<) and less than (>) signs are replaced with arrows, mostly for use on road signs. Once I had these replaced, it was obvious to replace the caret (^) with an upwards arrow, and the underscore (_) being replaced with a downwards arrow was chosen because of its proximity on the codepage to the upwards arrow and because it’s the only symbol that has any connection to the idea of “below”.
The at sign (@) is replaced with a smiley face. Since I’ve never seen that symbol used for anything but email addresses, and email has not been invented yet in the setting of Morlequariat, it was effectively a blank space that I could put anything in; and this is a symbol I’ve seen frequently enough in the fonts of the old games for Nintendo handhelds that were such a major influence on the game’s aesthetic. I think the main reason I chose the replacement I did is because of the tendency of old-fashioned ASCII-graphics roguelikes to represent the player character with an at sign, and the tendency of upgraded versions of those same roguelikes that used the IBM 437 font to use the smiley face character instead.
The curly braces ( { } ) and the vertical pipe ( | ) are replaced with glyphs that can be combined to make variable-width dashes. This is because I have a tendency to use perhaps more em dashes (—) in casual writing than is strictly warranted, and the hyphen (-) is too short for that.
There are at least two other fonts of the same style that are going to be in the game. One is a Gothic Blackletter font, which is going to be used for inscriptions on ancient statues, dialogue spoken by historical figures, and the like. (This fontpage currently also contains a number of color-coded symbols for game concepts such as damage types and health meters, although these may end up getting moved to their own page at some point in the future.) The other is based on my own handwriting and will probably be used primarily for handwritten texts. As an unrelated personal side project (read: “way to procrastinate working on Morlequariat”), I have also expanded the primary font to cover the entire Greek alphabet and have gotten much further than necessary on replicating the entirety of the IBM 437 and Windows 1252 codepages.

Cases where the text was garbled by human mistake or due to a software glitch can’t be solved this way.

This solution, of course, assumes that the text is encoded properly but in an unknown code page. Try these encodings: head file |iconv -f try (LANG environment variable is assumed to be set accordingly to a TUI used) and look whether is the result readable, until success.Compile a list of encodings used by the language(s).At least compile a list of few plausible hypotheses. Investigate/learn/guess which language does the file supposedly encode. That’s why original HTTP/1.1 strongly insisted on declaration of charset in the HTTP Content-Type: header for any text/* media type. But if the file represents, say, a mostly ASCII source code with only one or two words made of high-bit-set octets, then it’s virtually impossible to guess the language and encoding even with such miraculous heuristic algorithm. Update: never tried enca possibly it’s a wonder-decoder made along these lines. Not to say it’s impossible but, to work efficiently, such heuristic detector had to possess a large vocabulary of all most-used languages, a large list of code pages, and know some grammar. at - for others, maybe you just have to look at the corresponding Wikipedia coding tables.Ī file in an unknown 8-bit code page is determined as “unknown-8bit” for a reason: it is not an easy problem without any ideas about the language. Obviously, this is painstaking, slow, and error prone, especially if there are many candidate encodings to choose from.įor some encodings, you can find a list e.g. The Wikipedia page for this encoding has a table of all the characters. Maybe look up a few more bytes to verify this conclusion. If the first byte is 0x94 and you know it should display as ﭖ you have basically established that the encoding is Iran System. If you know what the output should look like, you can also look up individual mappings for bytes in the file. (My version of iconv doesn't actually support MacArabic, but maybe you will have more luck or you can try a different conversion tool.)Įxamine the resulting output files see if one of them seems to make sense. If iconv -f "$encoding" -t utf-8 inputfile >outputfile."$encoding" then I have included MacArabic here mainly for illustrative purposes (though maybe it would even be a feasible alternative for Farsi, too?) for encoding in cp1256 macarabic do

In your case, if you know the original text is in Farsi / Persian, maybe you can identify a number of possible encodings, and iterate over those until you see the output you expect.īased on quick googling, there is no standard, stable converter for the legacy Iran System encoding, and the only remaining popular alternative is Windows codepage 1256. There is no reliable way to convert from an unknown encoding to a known one.

So I am wondering how to know the encoding and eventually convert it to a usable format. Run `enca -list languages' to get a list of supported languages.
