A collection of MDZS junior-centric modern AU stories, by Sanguis. Title from the fic tags.
So, this fall I read four short modern college AU stories by Sanguis (@bel-ennui), and the heartfelt, comedy-of-errors tone was just what I needed in the moment. The first three (The Tides Turn Quickly, Yearning, and Where The Day Flows) are all different takes on the same premise, that it's spring 2020, the junior cultivators are college students, and that it's not common knowledge that Professors Wei and Lan are married. Watching the interconnected relationships be accidentally revealed three times over in three different ways filled me with an immense amount of glee, and the fourth story, We Gather Here, is about going to the first family gathering post-lockdown with your boyfriend, and made a fitting coda.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The bookcloth is made from some leftover fabric a friend gave me from mask-making, fittingly enough. The endpapers are from my wife's stash of painting experiments with gel-plate printing. The title and cover image were applied with acrylic paint and a Cricut-cut vinyl stencil.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This was my first quarto-sized book (letter-sized paper cut and folded into a quarter of the sheet instead of half) and it's a supremely satisfying size to make! This is just under 20,000 words in 172 pages. I've definitely got a few more projects in mind in the 20-40k word length.

20 Questions for fic writers!
@froizetta tagged me ages ago and i've been picking away at this as my arm allows! thank you :D
putting these below a cut because this ended up quite long.
How many works do you have on AO3?
67... not including some older stuff I orphaned. total (including the orphans and 2 fics i put on an alt) is 78! i've been on ao3 for 12 years, which is a frightening number to contend with.
What’s your total A03 word count? 304,059 (half of which was written last year....)
What fandoms do you write for?
Currently mostly DCU and subfandoms, but once a year I do Secret Samol for Friends at the Table my beloved.
What are your top five fics by kudos?
unfurl - DC, Superbat with bonus Timkon, 7.4k
Everyone loves a sex comedy (including me– there's another in my top 5 fics.) This one came about bc I wanted to come up with a shape for Clark's junk that wasn't your standard tentacle.
2. mission parameters - DC, Superbat, 33k
Alien fake dating! This was the first fic I ever intentionally posted chapter by chapter instead of all at once and I had so much fun seeing people's responses come in week to week. Also, this fic started as an excuse to write them fighting about Clark getting evicted and.... REALLY spiraled from there.
3. talk about all the good things (and the bad things) - MDZS/CQL, Wangxian, 6.3k
The second sex comedy! I just really think that "every day is every day" is a beautiful sentiment and not perhaps a feasible production if you are having Wangxian levels of sex on the regular. Plus a porn coda because, out of spite, I wanted to write Lan Wangji as a sub.
4. can I look the other way - MDZS/CQL, Wangxian, 2.7k
DEEPLY tropey Wangxian misunderstandings. The title for this one came from Westerman's "Think I'll Stay," which never ceases to give me post-canon Wei Wuxian emotions. This is the much much much lighter version of the story I'll never write about Wei Wuxian's probable mental state after the end of CQL.
5. everybody says - DC, Superbat, 2.8k
This was for Bruce Wayne Week using the prompts "inconvenient soulmate reveal" and "Bruce gets kidnapped," which I had great fun shoehorning into under three thousand words.
What’s the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
lololol. i've written two separate fics where one member of the pairing kills the other onscreen! so probably one of those. whetstone (the edeleth major character death) i think wins out because the murder, while deeply romantic in my opinion, doesn't actually happen in canon. (while samot doesn't directly stab samothes in fatt canon he sure is instrumental in it happening!)
What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
this is the harder question! i write a lot of fic tagged "hopeful ending" and "ambiguous/open ending." i struggle with an unequivocal HEA! for a long time i struggled to write endings at all, and so i wrote mostly vignettes that just sort of faded out. i tell myself this is because life doesn't tie up neatly, and so neither do my stories, but also i am just bad at writing endings. probably one of my wangxian fics, tbh... i think give it all for a taste (sex pollen) or my remix fic (all the singing in the tops of the trees) have really sweet, happy endings.
Do you get hate on your fic?
I've never gotten actual hate directed at me! I got a kind of shitty comment on everything is new from someone who really hated that i had written a knightfall fic in which bruce pushed people away, but i think i've come out pretty lucky!
Do you write smut?
yes.
Do you write crossovers?
i've never written a crossover in which characters from different universes interact, but i did write a very long locked tomb/mdzs fusion!
Have you ever had a fic stolen?
not to my knowledge! i don't think my stuff is popular or long enough for most people to bother lol. like, love and light, idk if my 30k fake dating fic that was also a trojan horse for me to talk about class and oppression and the sometime futility of individual action in the face of systemic injustice is going to do numbers on wattpad? maybe i'm underestimating wattpad.
Have you ever had a fic translated?
yes! itsuki_minatsu did an amazing mandarin translation of take a pic, strike a pose. i wish i read enough (any) mandarin to be able to see how they did the group chats bc i love seeing how puns and jokes get translated! shoutout to translators.
Have you ever co-written a fic?
only for OCs! but god did we write a lot of fic about RP OCs, most of which never made it onto the ol' ao3. i miss them :')
What‘s your all-time favourite ship?
oh god. this is like asking a favorite child and also DEEPLY subject to recency bias. we've been rewatching nine's season of doctor who and i've been getting smacked in the face by the absolute nightmare energies of nine/rose recently. nine treats every man rose looks at like a stray dog she brought home that's pissed on the carpet. for their first date he takes her to watch the destruction of everything she's ever known!! she completely abandons her entire life to be with him! every other episode they are tearfully trying to die for each other and also nine is the most heinous bitch you've ever met <3
What’s the WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
hm... i'm not sure! i'm trying not to say "anything long" right now. my arm is doing better than it was at the beginning of the month but it's not up to longfic or really writing for more than about 25 minutes at a time. so it goes!
What’s your writing strengths?
individual scenes and character studies, imo! i am quite good at setting a scene and creating an atmosphere. also (i think) dialogue. i'd better be good at dialogue, since i've been doing the "rehearse scenes in the mirror with your characters" thing since i was about 12.
What’s your writing weakness?
plot! absolutely absolutely plot. i really struggle to plan out What Happens Next and how to get from point A to point B. this is almost entirely due to lack of practice; before 2020 i'd never written anything longer than about 6k, and never finished anything with an extended plot. also this is just something that writing endless amounts of fic is not actually the best tool to learn, because i'll always have the existing plot scaffolding of canon instead of really having to flex my plot-building muscles.
also action scenes, but is there anyone who doesn't struggle with those? sounds fake.
Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?
I wouldn't personally do it because I do not actually speak any other languages besides some pretty slipshod German! and nothing is more jarring than reading something and being like "that is NOT right." I don't think there's anything wrong with it as long as the dialogue is actually correct both linguistically and character-wise, but I'd need a very strong plot/character reason to do it, and also an assist from someone who did speak the language!
i also think English-language fandom has a tendency to toss in other languages to like, prove a character's either exoticism (as in a Latine character randomly dropping in Spanish) or skill (as in a white character suddenly sprinkling Thai in an otherwise English sentence) and I think that can be pretty shitty depending on context. but both of those are writing pitfalls that you can fall into without ever using the language!
First fandom you wrote for?
Warrior Cats! I read some of it out on Staircast :) It was honestly pretty good for being written by a 10- or 11-year old.
Favourite fic you’ve ever written?
I couldn't answer this question the last time I got asked and I'm struggling again! I think this one really suffers from recency bias. right now, for instance, i'm deeply enamored of my secret samol which will go up next week! but that feels like cheating. i think i shouted out a lot of my faves already, though.
tagging: anyone who wants to do this, but especially @try-set-me-on-fire and @timetoboldlygo!

No sé...
Si me enojé...
No mamen, si me encendió esas cosas.

Chapter 4: Bad Moon Rising
An escape is made.
Coda: Paint It Black
Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji arrive at Cloud Recesses and are finally, finally alone.
Notes: A two-chapter treat today--or rather, the last proper of "Gimme Shelter" and then its sexy epilogue, the one that the D/s and tentacle sex tags are referencing.
There won't be an update next Sunday, I'm taking some time to focus on the epilogue fic that goes with "this humble fox," but please be patient, or enjoy the anticipation, as you like--next ghost story, "Writ in Blood," goes out to all my fellow fans of XiYao and/or Shirley Jackson novels!

OMG Wen Ning and Qin Su in age reversal au!! Can you give a little snippet about them? and totally rooting for JC and WQ (in this house we support wen siblings x happiness)
Thank you for always bringing amazing ideas Stilton! ❤️
"Qionglin."
Wen Ning stops with an arrow still nocked to his bowstring, wondering if he might have imagined the sound of his uncle's voice. Wen Ruohan rarely visits the training fields these days, since his cultivation has long since passed the point of requiring practice to maintain it; but the person standing at the gate is definitely his uncle, dressed in a light padded vest and trousers instead of his red court robes and holding a bow and quiver of his own.
"Shufu," Wen Ning says, putting his hands together in a shallow bow as Wen Ruohan comes over to stand beside him. "Would you like to have the field to yourself, Uncle? I can take the disciples out hunting if you'd rather be left alone."
“No, nephew. I would speak with you, now that I have the time.”
“What about?” asks Wen Ning. He hopes it’s not about Qing-mei’s engagement again; the only suitor he could possibly entertain for his sister is Yunmeng Jiang’s Wei Wuxian, his own sworn brother, and Ying-ge might very well be married to Lan Wangji before the year is out.
But then he alights on a worse possibility, and bites the inside of his cheek to stop himself from wincing.
“Did Chao’er get into trouble again?”
“That brat, get into trouble? With Xiao-Qing looming over his shoulder all day like a bird hunting a locust? Not a chance.”
Wen Ning frowns.
“Then what is it?”
“You’re nearly old enough to succeed me as Wen-zongzhu,” Wen Ruohan informs him, just as Wen Ning reaches for his water bottle and takes an enormous gulp. “You’ll be twenty-five on your next birthday, A-Lin. It’s high time you found a wife.”
Wen Ning tries to swallow and sucks his mouthful of water straight down into his lungs. “What?” he hacks, while his uncle lifts his eyes to the heavens as if pleading with them for patience. “But, but--”
“But nothing! You’re a grown man, and you ought to have a family of your own by the time you become sect leader. Now go out and find a suitable girl, or I’ll have Xiao-Qing find one for you.”
“Um. Ah, th-then, can’t I just leave it to her? I trust my meimei’s judgment, so--”
“No, you may not!” Wen Ruohan roars, before glancing back at the line of targets on the other side of the training field. “Hmm. I hear that girls like archers, so maybe you can get somewhere with that bow of yours. What do you think?”
Wen Ning packs up his archery equipment and flees.
“I just remembered that I have somewhere to be,” he shouts, hurtling back towards the gate that leads into the palace proper. “Don’t wait up, uncle! I’ll be home after dinner.”
“Wen Qionglin! Come back here! I haven’t finished with you, boy!”
coda:
“Does Ning-xiong still think you’re going to marry me?” Wei Wuxian wonders aloud, over the bowl of half-peeled lotus seeds occupying the patch of floor between himself and Wen Qing. “He does know you come down here to spy on my brother, right?”
“I’m not spying,” Wen Qing sniffs. “I’m exploring my future options, because shufu wants me to marry Lan Xichen, and I’d go crazy if I had to watch you and Lan-zongzhu flirting in the Cloud Recesses all day. But my uncle wants dage to get married first, so he won’t have time to worry about me until that’s all settled.”
“Oh, Ning-xiong’s getting married? Who to?”
“Qin Su shot an arrow through Da-ge’s guan and nailed him to a tree the last time he visited Laoling,” she says conversationally. “He’d like a shooting partner who could keep up with him, don’t you think?”
“But I thought Qin-guniang was betrothed to Jin Zixuan.”
Wen Qing pops another lotus seed into her mouth and crushes it into pulp.
“Not if I have anything to say about it.”

Episode 3: Operation Campus Cat, A Covert Investigation By Chief Infiltrator Da Qing
Fandom: Guardian (镇魂) Rating: G Tags: canon compliant, coda, Shen Wei’s students Words: 911
Summary: Da Qing investigates Dragon City University. It goes exactly as planned.
A/N: My contribution to the @daqingkingofcats (Mis)Adventures! <3
It also fills my @guardianbingo square for “Jiajia” :D
Read here on Ao3.
***
Da Qing padded on silent feet through the halls of Dragon City university. Lessons were long since over, but here and there light still shone under the doors of various offices. In one classroom Da Qing passed by, a TA was going over the correct answers of the last multiple-choice quiz and explaining to the students who had guessed differently where they went wrong. Da Qing lingered long enough to verify they weren’t talking about biology or engineering before moving on.
A quick scuttle-by Professor Shen’s office proved the professor was still working, the lights shining through the half-closed shutters. Da Qing hid behind a potted plant sitting innocuously in the middle of the hallway and pretended to clean his fur, ears perked in the direction of the office. With his superior hearing, he could make out the occasional shuffling of papers and the scratch of a fountain pen. No voices were to be heard, no mysterious sounds hinting at the secrets the professor was clearly keeping.
Tail lashing in frustration, Da Qing took a moment to wash a particularly itchy spot in the back, the repetitive motion calming him down.
He couldn’t believe lao-Zhao had agreed to go on a date with the man! After Da Qing had expressly warned him! Professor Shen was clearly suspicious, and his interest in lao-Zhao waved all sorts of red flags. Not that lao-Zhao was blind to the signs, no, they just made him even more curious. His lack of self-preservation instincts were definitely not Da Qing’s fault, he had tried teaching the boy! But lao-Zhao was stubborn and thick-headed, the lessons just wouldn’t stick.
Clearly, the allure of this Professor Shen was too strong. Perhaps that was his Dixingren power?
Da Qing narrowed his eyes at the door to the offending person’s office. It didn’t seem like Professor Shen was inclined to leave any time soon or offer him any other opportunity to snoop around. Office hours were obviously over, too, so that way was out. Sniffing, Da Qing stuck his tail up high and trotted out of the hallway.
Surely, there must be someone on the administrative staff who would be open to letting him read their sensitive documents. After all, who could say no to his cute face?
Proving he was a lucky cat, a young woman stepped out of the chancellor's office just as he turned the corner.
"Oh!" she exclaimed before crouching down, holding out her fingers for him to sniff. Da Qing deigned to smell them and, keeping his goal firmly in mind, rubbed his cheek against her hand with a cute, little 'mrrrp'.
"Are you lost, kitty?" the girl asked, scritching behind Da Qing's ears and under his jawline. Da Qing closed his eyes, enjoying the attention and forgetting for the moment why he'd come here in the first place. "You must be looking for the entrance, huh? C'mon, I'll help you outside."
Before Da Qing could protest, the girl heaved him up off the floor. With her tiny statue, Da Qing's mighty cat form filled out her arms easily. Then she carried him away from the offices, towards the exit.
Da Qing took a moment to examine the situation he was in. He could struggle his way out easily – he wasn't the king of cats for nothing! But that would take effort, plus the time to find a new benefactor to carry him inside where the files were. Who knew if there was anyone more talented at catching the itch at the back of his neck as this amazing student? No, surely fate was offering him a hint to stay and endure more petting by this girl.
Satisfied with his reasoning, Da Qing settled into the arms and purred to his heart's content.
They entered the courtyard and headed for the park attached to the university. It was mostly dark out by now, the sort of dim evening where the sky was still red but the sun no longer visible. A gasp had Da Qing's ears twitch.
"Jiajia!" The name was whisper-shouted, a crowd of students descending on the young woman Da Qing had chosen to carry him. "Ohhh, look at that fat kitty! Where did you find it?"
"It's so round and adorable," another girl gushed, wiggling her fingers in Da Qing's face. He considered her, then rubbed his cheek along her finger until the tip landed behind his ear. The student made a tiny little squeaking noise full of glee, fingers moving to scratch at the base of his ear and down his neck, now that she had gained Da Qing’s permission.
Clearly, these students knew how to treat a kind with proper respect.
“It’s so fat,” one student marvelled, the other students murmuring in agreement and approval.
“I found it inside,” the young woman holding him—Jiajia—explained, continuing her masterful petting, much to Da Qing’s approval. “I think it might’ve gotten lost. I haven’t seen it around before.”
“Me neither, I would’ve remembered such a well-fed cat,” another student agreed. "I mean, look at its cute, squishy face!"
Da Qing preened, stretching out to give them more room for pets. Surely, indulging his adoring fans with his presence for a while longer would only serve to establish his cover. The better the students knew him, the less suspicious he would seem, strolling around campus.
Decision made and justified, Da Qing offered them a pitiful meow and settled down to enjoy the scritches.

am writing a stupid little coda to lans where Nie Huaisang (w/Wei Wuxian's help) makes Lan Wangji a list of 10 movies he has to watch and was fretting about whether or not my movie list was perfect and beyond reproach and then I googled '10 must-see movies' and the bar is actually so deeply low and it's fine lmao

TOP 25 FICS OF 2021
1. Like Wildfire by makemadej | Buzzfeed Unsolved | Ryan Bergara/Shane Madej | 20k
“Is this gonna be a thing with you?” Ryan demands. “You can’t keep committing to stuff that no one else knows about! When people online say they want you to be more open and vulnerable, this is not what they mean.”
Heather Says: This was not the first fic that I read of 2021, but it IS the one that stuck with me the most out of the January lineup (which unfortunately usually gets glossed over). It's got all of my favorite tropes. Fake relationships, serious pining, and *squints* belly kink? Huh. Either way. Fantastic fic, great writing and characterization. 10 out of 10, champ.
2. μήτηρ, in the Greek by @kaikamahine | Hades | Nyx & Persephone | 37k
She went first to the hives of Silence and requested from them their beeswax. Then she found where the clay men had hidden their newfound fire, and took from their hearth the smallest burning scrap, which she used to light a wick. As the wax melted down it, its layers dripped and hardened upon themselves, and when it lengthened into a shape she could carry in her arms, she the Night bent her head and kissed life into it. This became the infant she called Charon, half-melted and smoking Promethean fire with every breath.
At the end of this recounting, she tilted her head and asked politely, Is this not how you have children?
Heather Says: Bear with me as I make tiny, squeaky noises of exquisite pleasure in your general direction, because goddamn, do I always love @kaikamahine's fics. I played Hades back in January and this fic was just one beautiful meandering walk through everything that I loved about the game itself, but so much MORE because Elizabeth always delivers on every front. The prose is lovely, but it's the relationship between Nyx and Persephone that keeps you rooted.
3. backdraft by broments | Promare | Lio Fotia/Galo Thymos | 32k
It happens in an instant, Galo gaping like an idiot while Lio presses forward to defend against the perceived threat, the weapon sparkling but not burning as it kisses Galo's throat.
Galo sees the moment Lio realizes who he is, that he’s not a threat, his eyes going wide, lips parting. Truthfully, he's not sure whether Lio’s shocked at the appearance of his weapon or that he’d drawn it against Galo. Both, maybe.
Heather Says: Promare was a thing that happened to me and it lit a fire under my ribs that I hadn't felt in months. I had the good fortune of discovering it just as I was getting over my covid longhauler symptoms and I honestly think that it was the first spark of joy I'd had since September of 2020. This fic is a delightful coda to the movie itself, expanding on the world of Promare and, of course, Lio and Galo's relationship in the aftermath.
4. Hungry Thirsty Roots by coolkidroland | Persona 5 | Akechi Goro/Kurusu Akira | 56k
In which Akira absolutely does not learn to leave well enough alone. alternate title: A Fork in Want of a Light Socket
Heather Says: Possibly cheating a bit because this is a series of three fics, but you know, I'm going to let it slide because they're all bangers. I spent a huge portion of 2021 trying to slog my way through P5 Royal and have been flirting with this pairing every time it comes back onto my radar. I just... really love that dynamic.
5. breaking the same old heart by tardigradeschool | The Adventure Zone | Taako/Magnus Burnsides | 11k
Taako and Magnus in triptych: before, during, and after the Bureau.
Heather Says: Another thing that I discovered in early 2021 as I was slowly breathing myself back to life: The Adventure Zone. And yes, I am well aware that I'm late to the party. I went looking for fic after I finished it, because I basically fell in love with this rare pair the moment Taako dove after Magnus's soul, and ended up finding this gem. Absolutely glorious. Perfection.
6. never love an anchor by tardigradeschool | The Untamed | Lan Wangji/Wei Wuxian | 31k
Wei Ying lets the oars rest and leans back, tilting his head to look at Lan Wangji. “Did you find what you’re looking for? On the docks today?”
Heather Says: Lan Wangji as a selkie. Pining! Hurt/Comfort! Selkies!!!!
7. to explore strange new worlds...! by tardigradeschool | The Untamed | Lan Wangji/Wei Wuxian | 30k
“Have you ever heard of a mind meld?” Wangji keeps his voice as level as possible, as if he is not revealing foremost Vulcan secrets.
Heather Says: This is also technically cheating, because it is a series of three fics, as well. My favorite part is the third one, but it all deserves to be read. Star Trek fusion of the Untamed, which is quickly becoming one of my favorite things. And yes, this is the third of tardigradeschool's fics in one fell swoop.
8. Don’t be afraid. by @andthepeople | Star Wars | Obi-Wan Kenobi/Anakin Skywalker | 12k
“Padawan Kenobi,” Yoda says, after a moment. “Complete your training, Master Skywalker will.”
Heather Says: Here we have another lovely writer that is going to show up on this list several times. This fic was everything I never knew I wanted from Obikin. A reversal AU with Jedi Master Anakin and Padawin Obi-Wan that absolutely blew my mind when I first read it sometime in the spring. It is a delight. Please, treat yourself.
9. Christ in Repose by @andthepeople | The Mandalorian | Luke Skywalker/Din Djarin | 19k
More on this story as it develops. Subscribe to HNN’s JEDI WATCH newsletter for instant updates on Jedi sightings throughout the galaxy.
Heather Says: To be quite honest, every single fic that @andthepeople has written are absolute bangers. I went and devoured most of their published work on Ao3 after I read the first fic and have been happily imbibing content ever since. The prose is great no matter the fic or fandom, but the atmosphere that they create is what really gets me every time. It's always unique to each piece of work, but feels deliciously lived in. This one features a Luke Skywalker if he'd been allowed to basically ascend to godhood. I LOVED it.
10. hear the monsters calling home by sundiscus | The Untamed | Lan Wangji/Wei Wuxian | 8k
He breaks off, grimacing and covering his nose. “Sorry, that’s really a lot of blood.” When he drops his hand, Lan Wangji catches a flash of a sharp, white fang.
Heather Says: If you've been following me for a while, you already know that I'm weak for creature features. Vampires hold a special place in my heart, and I ended up marathon reading this threadfic as it was being published on twitter. I feel like threadfic gets a bad rep, but guys, it's so good. I'm so happy it's on ao3 now, too.
11. parasitic, parasocial by @brawlite | The Untamed | Xue Yang/Song Lan/Xiao Xingchen | WIP | 37k
Xue Yang stumbles upon the channel of Fuxue, a popular videogame streamer, and immediately becomes completely and utterly obsessed with him. Unfortunately, Fuxue has a boyfriend -- but that's fine: Xue Yang loves a challenge.
Heather Says: More threadfic that I devoured in a fevered haze as it was being published in late spring/early summer. This one isn't the FIRST SXX fic that really hooked me, but it was definitely the first one to get its claws into me this year. I usually don't read WIP until they're finished, but I made an exception for this one because I really love the way brawls writes these three. I always love their dynamic, but goddamn, this one was good.
12. you're the trouble that i always find by sundiscus | Word of Honor | Wen Kexing/Zhou Zishu | 27k
Jin Wang tries another way to get Zhou Zishu back.
Heather Says: I adore some good angst and this one has that in spades. A happy ending, sure, but it does spend - oh i don't know - a good 20k having one character kill the other one over and over again while continuously not-quite remembering who he is? One of the tags that is used is: 'falling in love with your soulmate all over again in the middle of a nightmare.' It is some GOOD food.
13. the agony and the irony by arostine | Buzzfeed Unsolved | Ryan Bergara/Shane Madej | 68k
Ryan has a lot on his plate right now. He’s one of three members of his species employed at BuzzFeed, and the only male omega, and his boss keeps asking him to do videos about being an iterant ‘to educate the humans,’ when what he really wants to do is videos about ghosts. So if, in the push to finish the pitch for BuzzFeed Unsolved, he forgot to renew his heat suppressant prescription—cut him some slack, okay? It happens.
Heather Says: I used to hate A/B/O fic, but over the last few years, I've developed a surprising weak spot for them. I think that's largely because so much of it in the early days was focused on the original aspects of the trope: very alpha vs omega. Lots of posturing and slightly uncomfortable vibes, but so much of the new stuff has done a great job of exploring the aspects - both traditional and not. This fic does a really great job of exploring that. It... also helps that this is lovers to enemies to lovers and I am SO weak for that. Always.
14. Vennen min by @andthepeople | Loki | Loki/Mobius | 12k
The day they let Mobius out of the infirmary, Loki gets assigned to a new handler. This, Mobius is pretty sure, is where the trouble starts.
Heather Says: More from spqr - and possibly my absolute favorite of the bunch. Definitely my favorite thing to come from the Loki fandom, with the exception of that other fic of theirs that's going to show up in a little bit here. This fic REALLY expands on the TVA in a way that is so delightful. That atmosphere back again, this one positively cozy.
15. If The Morning Light Sets In by by nagia | Castlevania | Alucard/Trevor Belmont/Sypha Belnades | 78k
Save the Belmonts, save the world.
Heather Says: I read the majority of this in the bath one Saturday about mid-summer and was literally so in awe that I kept letting the water go cold because I just could not put it down. One of the best time travel/fix it fics that I've read. I love the characterization of Trevor through the early chapters, the fleshed out glimpses we get of his family, and a young Sypha and Alucard. I am technically cheating, because I have linked to the series itself while I've only read the first and second parts so far. I'm a marathon reader, and the third part is only a little over half way done, but I'm sure it will be just as amazing as parts one and two.
16. lonely lonely heart by @andthepeople | Loki | Loki/Mobius | 7k
Mobius looks down at the paperwork, gets a sort of flustered farmboy look on his face, looks back up at Loki and says, “You offered to give a cop fellatio in the middle of Central Park.”
Heather Says: Did you want to read about Loki the Art Thief falling in love with FBI Agent Mobius? Is that a thing that is secretly your catnip too? Because let me tell you, White Collar broke me years ago and this fic finished the job.
17. the red dark shifting by typefortydeductions | The Untamed | Lan Wangji/Wei Wuxian | 15k
In the aftermath of the disastrous events on Tarsus IV, Wei Ying is rescued by none other than Lan Zhan, his former Vulcan best friend and now Starfleet Captain.
Heather Says: Another Untamed/Star Trek fusion! This one is a bit darker than the first one, but in a way that works perfectly for the characters. Tarsus fic always has teeth, and this one's is very good at cutting you. There is definite angst, hurt/comfort, ptsd, and an ambiguous ending, but one where it's very easy to imagine everything ending up all right.
18. raw silk and uncut wood by hisevilforest | The Untamed | Xue Yang/Song Lan/Xiao Xingchen | 55k
Xue Yang depends on the yin iron. When Song Lan and Xiao Xingchen take it from him, they'll have to deal with the consequences.
Heather Says: I'm a fan of the fuck or die trope, especially if it's handled particularly well. When I first heard about the SXX exchange this year, I went through and acquainted myself with all the material that came out last year. This one was my favorite of the bunch and contained a host of kinks that I am very, very fond of. Incidentally, this is also the fic that made me realize I really like it when Xue Yang cries during sex.
19. New and Used Boos by beethechange | Buzzfeed Unsolved | Ryan Bergara/Shane Madej | 36k
The guy’s teeth are large and even and starkly white—not Midwest white—and it’s then, at last, that Shane realizes who he’s talking to. Because that’s a distinctive smile. A famous smile. It’s Ryan Bergara.
Heather Says: I stayed up until stupid o'clock in the morning reading this the night it came out, and I don't even LIKE Notting Hill. But I do trust beethechange when it comes to fic, and god, this one was one of my favorites. The banter was spot on and I ended up laughing out loud during multiple parts of the fic. This fic warmed my heart like no other.
20. living in my memory/living in my mouth by tardigradeschool | The Untamed | Lan Wangji/Wei Wuxian | 32k
Wei Wuxian dies at twenty-two and doesn’t come back. Lan Wangji dies in an “unfortunate accident” in a temple in Yunping at thirty-seven. The world moves on. Thousands of years later, Wei Ying and Lan Zhan have a senior thesis in cultivation to co-write on the Yiling Patriarch. It doesn’t go exactly how they were expecting.
Heather Says: This is somehow the FOURTH tardigradeschool fic that has made it to this list this year. They are all wonderful. This one explores reincarnation in a modern with magic au.
21. Existence is Chaos by blacktofade | Loki | Loki/Mobius | 10k
There's a recorded memory of them having sex, but Mobius refuses to admit that he and Loki have a sex tape. AKA the one where Mobius and Loki are destined to hook up.
Heather Says: I was SO delighted when blacktofade published this, because I've always loved their fic and Loki was the newest, shiniest fandom of the season. It did not disappoint.
22. No night as deep as my night. by orange_crushed | The Untamed | Lan Wangji/Wei Wuxian | 17k
“Wei Ying,” he says. “Come in.”
Heather Says: I really adore fic that really leans into just how pants-wettingly terrifying Wei Ying really was at the height of his power as the Yiling Patriarch. This one is exquisite. Just the right amount of darkness.
23. out to get you (to get you) by iliacquer | The Untamed | Lan Wangji/Wei Wuxian | 41k
In order to kill the Demon of Yiling, assassin Lan Wangji pretends to be courtesan. Falling in love with Wei Wuxian is an unfortunate complication.
Heather Says: Assassin Lan Wangji. Courtesan Lan Wangji. Delightfully complicated Lan Wangji. Canon divergent AUs are really great, and this one twists canon HARD in the best possible way to get this glorious outcome.
24. The Compact by @astolat | Harry Potter | Draco Malfoy/Harry Potter(/Hermione Granger/Ron Weasley) | 64k
Hermione frowned. “The real question is why the magic of Britain would be failing now, in fact.”
Heather Says: On November 25th, @astolat published 64k of Drarry fic that also just so happened to heavily delve into Arthurian elements, the world building of Harry Potter itself, and the utter galaxy brain idea of Draco Malfoy becoming High King of Britain. I... stayed up very, very late.
25. All Old Things are New Again by The Feels Whale | The Untamed | Lan Wangji/Wei Wuxian | 51k
Full-time necromancer and part-time cam boy, Wei Wuxian, finds himself unexpectedly homeless. An enthusiastic patron comes to his rescue. Conversely: Immortal Cultivator Lan Wangji has been waiting a long time for his deceased husband to be reincarnated again. In retrospect, he should have anticipated that this is how it would go.
Heather Says: I stayed up until 2 in the morning last night reading this. I am... very tired, but very content.

Guardian Doctor Who AU if you haven't done that one yet 👀
Ooh yes! So when I first decided I wanted a doctor who AU, the first thing I tried to figure out was who should be the time lord. My first instinct was Shen Wei, because he's the OP non-human one, but then again Zhao Yunlan is the one who time travels. Then I realized I was asking the wrong question, with the right question being — who is more likely to steal a TARDIS and go gallivanting around the universe?
And well, there's really no contest after that.
The fic itself is a River Song Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead sort of deal, where Time Lord Kunlun meets a mysterious but human (and hot) professor who seems to know him very well and calls him by a name Kunlun doesn't recognize. They go through solving their little mystery and in the end, Shen Wei volunteers to sacrifice himself to save the world & their timeline ("time can be rewritten" "not those times. not one line. don't you dare!" 😭) — but Kunlun, who is already head over heels for Shen Wei after 2 hours, refuses. They figure it out and run off into the TARDIS together <3
Some dialogue from the epilogue/coda:
"We are supposed to be undercover. You can't call yourself Kunlun." ”Why not?” "Because Kunlun is the name of the Mountain God." "Huh, look at that. You guys have good taste in names. Wait a minute — am I the reason the Mountain God is called Kunlun?" "As I believe my students would say...spoilers." "Alright, what should I be called then?" "How about...Zhao Yunlan?"

This is a coda for Agape and Eros, which I wrote for @ober-affen-geil who gave me this idea and let me run away with it, and I'm also using it for my "crack fic" @guardianbingo square.
The title is based on John Alan Lee’s Color Wheel Theory of Love. Storgic love is described as familial love that grows out of friendship, and can also be based on similar interests (cough: Shen Wei). Ludic love is teasing and fun, potentially filled with pranks and activity. Storgic Ludus seems to suit Zhao Yunlan’s approach to Ye Zun rather nicely!
So: Troll!ZYL, Cat!Ye Zun, and family feels!
Tags: Fluff, feelings, crack, Troll!Zhao Yunlan, Cat!Ye Zun, family arguments, physical comfort, slice of life, alternate universe

What Does Kill You Can Make You Stronger, Too
Chapter 40: Coda
one year (and a few months more) later
Jin Ling’s fifteenth birthday had been, by necessity, a fairly discreet event. Friends and family attended the banquet, and a general holiday was declared for all of Jin Sect. But even three months after his fall from grace, many were still recovering from the shock of Jin Guangyao’s many betrayals (and many more were still being judged and gently chivvied into positions more suited to their loyalty and competence). The sect had been in no fit state to host an extravaganza.
For Jin Ling’s sixteenth birthday, Jiang Yanli was determined to correct the lapse. And not only because Jiang Cheng had turned Lotus Pier into a welcoming floral fairyland for Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji’s wedding in the spring, and it’d gone off with only a few, crocodile-yao–related hitches. She had helped arrange that event, after all! Save the crocodile-yao, which she’d helped destroy!
Now, it was LanlingJin’s turn to show off their hospitality and splendor, and to prove that they were back to being one of the greatest sects in the land. And there was always politics to consider...
“Why are we making a seating chart if we don’t even know who’s coming yet?” Jin Ling complained, in her office one afternoon in early August. “How are we making a seating chart if we don’t even know who’s coming yet?”

(Putting this here because I am not starting another WIP on AO3 until I finish the current one. It’s intended to fall sometime after Coda, but it can also stand alone as a Jiang Cheng and Lan Wangji reconciliation, of sorts, post-canon. Mostly it’s just Wei Wuxian yelling at them both, and then there’s hugging.
Content note: discussion of Wei Wuxian’s suicide.)
Wei Wuxian finally loses his temper, as much as he ever does with either of them these days. “What is going on with you two?” he demands. “I assumed it was something boring and political, but this is ridiculous!”
Lan Wangji and Jiang Cheng stare at him, then exchange a brief glance of intense confusion before remembering that they aren’t friends and never will be. Wei Wuxian crosses his arms and waits. When neither of them say anything, his irritation shifts into puzzlement, then concern as he looks at their faces. “Lan Zhan,” he says, quietly, uncrossing his arms and moving into Lan Wangji’s personal space. “I truly don’t understand. What did I miss?”
Cheater, Jiang Cheng thinks. It’s definitely cheating, even though he’s sure that the trust and concern radiating from Wei Wuxian are real. It certainly works on Lan Wangji, who swallows hard and says to the ground, low, “When you, in Nightless City—he is the reason you—” he can’t finish the sentence. Jiang Cheng looks away, feeling his jaw tighten. It’s true enough; he has known that for nearly half his life.
Wei Wuxian says, “Lan Zhan, what the fuck.”
Jiang Cheng looks back, startled: if Wei Wuxian has ever used that tone with Lan Wangji before, it has not been in his hearing. Lan Wangji has lifted his head and is staring at Wei Wuxian with similar astonishment. Presumably he expected—dreaded—the same slow agonizing conversation that Jiang Cheng did, gentle explanation and probably forgiveness or whatever. The conversations are familiar, now, but they have been avoiding this one: some things are simply unforgivable. Jiang Cheng knows this is one of them. If Wei Wuxian has chosen to forget it and move on instead, it is far better than he deserves.
It becomes rather immediately clear that this is not going to be a gentle conversation. It is possible, Jiang Cheng realizes, that it isn’t going to be a conversation at all; Wei Wuxian doesn’t seem particularly interested in engaging in dialogue. He is regarding Lan Wangji with the closest thing to real anger that has passed between them since they were fifteen years old, Jiang Cheng is pretty sure. “Jiang Cheng did not kill me,” Wei Wuxian snaps.
Lan Wangji turns and looks at Jiang Cheng with the cold fury of sixteen years’ hatred. “He might as well have,” he snarls. Jiang Cheng flinches with it, but he lifts his head and glares back. The words have lain unspoken between them for their entire adult lives, but he is not going to turn away from the truth of it now.
Wei Wuxian says, “What?”
“It was his fault,” Lan Wangji says. “I could have saved you, if he hadn’t stopped me.”
Jiang Cheng closes his eyes and clenches his fists. He does not expect the quick footsteps that cross the room and stop directly in front of him. “Jiang Cheng,” Wei Wuxian says, and oh, he is furious. Well, at least he has a place to go when he and Lan Wangji storm out of Lotus Pier. “Is that what you think?” Jiang Cheng opens his eyes, puzzlement winning out. “Do you think it was your fault that I died?” Wei Wuxian clarifies. The question does not make any sense in conjunction with the undiminished anger in his expression.
Jiang Cheng cannot speak, but apparently his participation is not actually required. Wei Wuxian’s eyes narrow. “Right,” he says, with great intent, though Jiang Cheng has no idea for what. “Since you are both apparently inconceivably stupid and I still somehow plan to spend the rest of my life with both of you, heaven help me, I guess we’re doing this.”
Lan Wangji says, “Wei Ying,” sounding just about as lost and alarmed as Jiang Cheng feels.
Wei Wuxian wheels on him. “You can shut the fuck up,” he says. Then he darts across the room and presses a quick kiss to Lan Wangji’s mouth. “I’m sorry, dear heart. I love you. But you don’t get to talk right now, not about this.” He steps back so he can look between the two of them. “I can’t believe that my shit memory is apparently better than either of yours, but here we are. I also can’t believe that I have to say this. They let you people make important political decisions, what the fuck.” They are both staring at him now. “Neither of you is in any way responsible for my death!” Wei Wuxian shouts, flinging his hands into the air. “I know because I jumped off a cliff, how do you not remember that part? It was a very important factor in the whole dying thing!”
“I should have helped him,” Jiang Cheng says. His voice comes out rough. It is the first time he has let himself think the words, let alone say them aloud.
Simultaneously, Lan Wangji growls again, “I could have saved you.”
“I was going to die anyway!” Wei Wuxian yells. They both stop short. He scrubs his hands over his face and sighs. “Ugh. I really, really wanted to never think about any of this ever again, thanks. Lan Zhan, remember how you kept telling me that resentful energy was dangerous? Did you think it wasn’t true?” Whatever he sees in the slight shift of Lan Wangji’s expression makes his mouth twitch in a faint humorless smile. “It very much is true, and I used rather a lot of it that day.” He tilts his head. “Plus I think somebody shot me with an arrow? Whatever. The point is, I was past saving well before I went off the cliff.”
Lan Wangji is shaking his head in useless denial. “Wei Ying,” he says, and stops.
The question hangs in the air. “Why?”Jiang Cheng asks, giving it voice.
Wei Wuxian’s eyes go dull and unseeing for a moment. Jiang Cheng tries not to imagine what he is remembering. “I’d had a rather spectacularly bad day,” Wei Wuxian says. Jiang Cheng snorts, unable to help himself; Wei Wuxian blinks and refocusses and gives him a wry smile. “And I really do want to never think about it again, at least on purpose. Moving on. Are we clear then? My death was entirely my own doing, neither of you could have saved me and you’re certainly not responsible for killing me. Now, can you please stop hissing at each other every time you’re in the same room?”
Jiang Cheng swallows hard. “Wei Wuxian, I—”
“Don’t you fucking dare,” Wei Wuxian says. “We are not going to get all weepy about this.” Jiang Cheng rolls his eyes; when he looks back, Wei Wuxian wears a small but genuine smile. “That’s better.”
“Shut up,” Jiang Cheng says. He takes a step forward and drags Wei Wuxian in; the hug is reciprocated, if a little grumpily. When he lets go, Wei Wuxian pats his shoulder and goes immediately to Lan Wangji. They step into each other’s arms and stay there for long enough that Jiang Cheng sighs and leaves to see about dinner.
