The Hidden Dangers of Ignoring Dryer Vent Cleaning
Many homeowners diligently maintain their homes but often overlook hidden elements like dryer vents, which can lead to severe consequences. Neglecting regular dryer vent cleaning not only hampers the performance of your dryer but also significantly raises the risk of a house fire. Understanding these risks is key to safeguarding your home and loved ones.
The Fire Risk from Clogged Dryer Vents
One of the most alarming dangers of skipping dryer vent maintenance is the heightened risk of fire. As lint and debris accumulate in the vent, they restrict airflow, causing the dryer to overheat. Since lint is highly flammable, excessive heat can easily ignite it, leading to a fire within the vent system. This makes dryer vent cleaning a crucial safety measure. Regularly clearing out lint and debris can dramatically lower this risk, making your home safer.
Signs Your Dryer Vent Needs Cleaning
Several warning signs can indicate a blocked dryer vent. If your dryer takes longer to dry clothes or if your laundry room feels unusually hot during a cycle, it’s time to inspect the vent. You might also notice that the dryer feels hotter than normal or that your clothes have a musty smell after drying. These signs shouldn’t be ignored, as continuing to use the dryer in this condition increases the chances of malfunction or fire. Prompt action can prevent bigger problems down the road.
The Cost of Neglecting Dryer Vent Cleaning
In addition to safety risks, neglecting your dryer vent can result in costly repairs or even the need for a replacement appliance. When vents are clogged, your dryer must work harder, accelerating wear and tear. This not only shortens the appliance's lifespan but also drives up energy bills as the dryer becomes less efficient. Regular vent cleaning keeps your dryer running smoothly and efficiently, saving you from unnecessary expenses over time.
Why Professional Cleaning Services Matter
While some homeowners attempt to clean dryer vents themselves, professional services offer a level of thoroughness that DIY efforts often can’t achieve. Technicians use specialized tools to remove deep-seated blockages and can identify hazards like damaged ducts or improper vent setups. Hiring a professional ensures your dryer is not only free of lint but also safe from potential hidden dangers. It’s a small investment that provides peace of mind and helps your appliance perform at its best.
Neglecting dryer vent cleaning isn’t just a matter of appliance maintenance—it’s a serious safety issue. Regular cleaning helps your dryer run efficiently and protects your home from the very real threat of fire.

Talked about this with @ceilidho last night and it’s making me Insane,
Neighbor!Johnny.
His parents have moved to be closer to his sisters and their children, leaving him their gorgeous house to crash at during leave.
When he moves in, you bring him a batch of cookies, welcoming him to the neighborhood and telling him to stop by if he needs anything. Something in his eyes flickers as he takes you in, sundress and sneakers.
“Cookies aren’t the only sweet treat here,” he drawls, grinning.
Your neighbor Johnny who leans folds his massive arms over your fence when he catches you out by the pool. You don’t have your towel or a coverup because it’s your own backyard, but it’s fine! There’s a fence between you two and anyway he’s just coming to say hi.
Johnny who tsks when you tell him your husband went on another business trip without fixing the AC. You don’t want to call someone over while you’re home alone. Not to worry - Johnny is handy with wires and he’ll fix it for free. And while he’s here… that cabinet too, aye? And the shower drain that’s a bit clogged?
You don’t notice that a couple of your photos are missing from an album you keep in the basement with the heater. Or the lotion from your cabinet is gone - your husband probably tossed it. Definitely don’t notice the very very slight change in consistency of your body soap.
One day you’re just home from groceries and Johnny stumbles out of a taxi. He’s got a big black duffel bag, still in uniform. There’s dirt in his mohawk and streaky paint on his face.
“Bonnie,” he sighs, making a beeline for you. “Missed you. Give us a hug? It was a rough go.”
And of course you hug him - least you can do for a man risking his life to keep the rest of the world safe!! You dont notice the smudges he leaves on your cheek until your husband points it out when he gets home.
Your husband…
Johnny doesn’t let Ryan call him Johnny; he introduces himself as “Soap.” You figure it’s a guy thing, giggling about the callsign while Johnny grips bruises into your husband’s soft white-collar hands.
He doesn’t like Johnny. Says it’s weird how he’s always hanging around.
Not always, you correct, he only gets a couple weeks of leave at a time.
And he spends as much of it as he can with you. It’s nice, though, to have company while you futz with housewife chores and pretend to anticipate your husband’s return home.
Johnny’s good company! He listens with rapt attention to the rambles your husband barely even pretends to hear. He doesn’t call your crime podcasts creepy, or your tv shows noisy.
(In fact, he listens a bit too closely. If you paused while cooking or cleaning, you’d notice the feverish light in his eyes. Certain turns of your tongue make his thighs twitch).
When you’re having a bad day, venting to Johnny about it over a cup of coffee, he listens, nods, clicks his tongue.
“He best take care of that when he gets home.”
You don’t get what he means, and the next day when you’re still annoyed, he shakes his head.
“All pent up still, eh? He not taking care of you right?”
You fluster and swat at him, remind him you’re not one of this army bros he shouldn’t be so crass. He keeps making those comments. You just roll your eyes and wave him off - but never correct him because it’s true.
One day your husband is home when Johnny stops by. You got something stuck in the sink drain and need him to get it - knew Ryan wouldn’t call in a reasonable time to save it.
When he comes in, Johnny drops a kiss on your cheek before going for the kitchen. Knows exactly where it is, you two have a standing brunch date there.
Johnny listens to you talk while he works, fusses at you for trying to hand him his dirty tools. Goes into your fridge, grabs a can of soda and a peach. Reminds you that you’re running low on yogurt while he licks juice from his fingers.
When he’s done, he drops one last kiss on the corner of your mouth, big hand anchoring you by the hip. You walk him out, promising to let him look at that rattling noise your car has been making the next day.
It starts a fight. Ryan is furious that Johnny is so comfortable in “his” house. You shake your head, tell him that you’re just as comfortable at Johnny’s but that only seems to set him off more. He tells you that it’s not normal, that Johnny is being inappropriate and you’re letting him.
You scoff and roll your eyes, tell him that he’s being insecure, that you only have eyes for him. He ends up storming out, presumably to go stay at his brother’s.
Thirty minutes after he’s gone, there’s a knock at the door. You know it’s Johnny. You almost answer it. But Ryan’s accusations ring in your head and dig a guilty pit in your stomach. You go upstairs, pretending you didn’t hear it. Or any of the others for the half hour after.

How Often Should You Clean Your Dryer Vent? Expert Insights
Taking care of your dryer vent is one of those household tasks that often slips through the cracks, yet it's crucial for both your dryer's efficiency and your home's safety. Regular cleaning of the dryer vent can significantly reduce fire risks and keep your dryer performing at its best. But when should you schedule this maintenance? Here’s what the professionals recommend.
Why Dryer Vent Cleaning Matters
Your dryer does a great job of removing moisture from your clothes, but over time, lint and debris can start to clog the vent. This buildup doesn’t just slow down your dryer's efficiency; it also creates a serious fire hazard. The U.S. Fire Administration reports that thousands of home fires each year are traced back to clogged dryer vents. Maintaining your dryer vent is a vital step in preventing these dangers and ensuring your dryer operates smoothly.
Signs It’s Time for a Dryer Vent Cleaning
While it’s wise to clean your dryer vent regularly, certain warning signs indicate when it might be necessary to do so sooner. If your clothes are taking longer to dry, the dryer feels unusually hot, or you detect a burning odor when the dryer is on, it’s a clear sign that your vent is clogged and needs immediate attention.
How Often Should You Clean Your Dryer Vent?
A good rule of thumb is to clean your dryer vent at least once a year. However, the frequency might vary depending on your household size and how often you use the dryer. For larger families or those who run the dryer frequently, experts advise scheduling a cleaning every six months. Pet owners should also consider more frequent cleanings due to the extra lint and fur that can accumulate.
Tips to Reduce the Need for Frequent Cleanings
To cut down on how often you need to clean your dryer vent, consider adopting some proactive habits. Clean the lint trap after every load, avoid overloading your dryer, and make sure the venting system is correctly installed. These simple practices can help reduce lint buildup, improving your dryer's efficiency and extending the intervals between professional cleanings.
Regular dryer vent maintenance is a smart investment in both safety and the longevity of your appliances. By keeping an eye on the signs that your vent needs attention and scheduling cleanings accordingly, you can ensure your dryer runs safely and efficiently for years to come.

Boq to Tinman transformation but it’s the proper body horror it deserves. /hj
The spell in question essentially melting his heart within seconds, his bones and lungs slightly readjusting inside him with the sudden lack of a form there. Blood that had been flowing in essentially flooding into the empty hole, hitting against the empty cavity and swirling down to his stomach, coming back up his mouth.
He can’t breath, everything hurts and feels almost clogged inside him as he hacks up blood and bile. He can hear Elphie talking, and he can hear the loud screeching shifting of metal, but as he opens his eyes to see, something flies over his eyes and closes them again. It’s some kind of metal plate or flat chunk of steel, hitting him so hard it breaks the top of his nose, and probably messing up his half-open eye as well, pushing his eyelid into his eye.
He can’t breath, but by god he can scream, so scream he does. Trying to claw the strange intrusion over his eyes, as another large metal sheet hits his upper back, the impact bruising his shoulderblades. His arms move down in shock and are immediately hit as well. Forks and little metal straws impale his elbow and wrists, at a bad angle that makes it impossible to move. A massive metal tray the size of his entire chest lands on it, and bends with a painful creaking noise around the curve of his front.
It starts becoming one with his skin. It isn’t like melting, it’s freezing, so cold it makes him with he could tear it off. But he can’t now, even if he had the strength to do so, his arms are numb and twitchy from being severed at the major arteries. It feels at first like a trrrible pushing, like pressing a brick on somebodies chest. Then the feeling changes to what having all your skin ripped off would feel like, somehow. It feels like his skin is being torn by the iron, shifting and stealing his flesh from him, making room for itself.
A metal coaster hits his chest, the last thing to fly at him, and after what felt like years of not being hit at all. It flies at him so hard and with a momentum it must have been spinning, going straight through the metal outer shell and lodging itself in his chest cavity, stopping on his ribs where his heart would be.
Unlike the rest of the metal, this is hot. It feels like smoke, suddenly burning his insides as his metal skin heats up, but starts hurting. It melts into seams, the forks in his arms becoming strange hollow joints, and the medal over his eyes separating into pieces. The piece in his chest rattles and melts everything else, so hot it melts his blood and insides clean like a solar ray.
His ‘eyes’ finally become two pieces and fling open as his face separates into multiple paces, his lower jaw clamping over the top and shooting steam from circular vents on the side, the sound of a tea kettle coming from somewhere in his body.
Nessa is trying to touch him, trying to help. He panics, looking her approaching his hand, then looking at his hand. Digging his weird clanky fingers into the joints of his arms as he stands, feeling a little more stable on his legs than he had before, the large bottoms helping. He can’t listen to a word Nessa says, looking past to Elphaba, green static practically pooling off her like a neon sign pointing, screaming ‘she did this!’

Hey, I heard you have Nick Valentine HCs?
I really like to hear them! 😄
It can be anything, just go ahead. What is the first one, which comes into your mind?
I love you for asking, thank you!
Here are a few:
All the patches on is coat he mended himself. It's one of the ways he fills the lonely hours when everyone else is sleeping, It's something human Nick never learned to do, but our Nick taught himself after his first few scuffles in the post-war world.
His metal hand doesn't have any sense of touch. I think his skin is probably full of minute wires that function as nerves, so when he lost the skin on his hand, he lost feeling in it. Now he has to rely on his vision to confirm that his hand is moving the way he wants it to. It took him a long time to get used to but he's mastered it now.
He doesn't like to take off his hat around strangers. I think he's a little self-conscious about the fact that he can't grow any hair. I think human Nick had a full head of hair and synth Nick can't help but compare himself. He'll take his hat off in the agency around Ellie, or around Sole if they get close with him, but if anyone he's not close with steps in the room, the hat goes back on.
He totally wears suspenders under that trench coat. 'Nuff said.
I think he carries around a small repair kit in his coat with a couple small tools and some spare wire/screws/bolts/electrical tape but it's only enough for minor temporary repairs. He uses this kit for quick patch jobs when he gets hurt on a case, just to hold him over till ge hets back home and can do a full repair.
He's an excellent dancer. Human Nick went dancing pretty often and synth Nick inherited some of that "muscle" memory. He's got rhythm and an elegant, sophisticated style. He's a little rusty at it, though, because he doesn't go out dancing on his own, and he's got no partner to practice with. Perhaps sole could take him out to the Third Rail sometime so he can show off his skills...
He's been subtly trying to get Ellie and Travis together for years. He thinks they'd be sweet together, and has encouraged Ellie to talk to Travis a few times. Nothing ever seems to come of it, but Nick hasn't given up yet.
You know his file cabinets are a hot mess. It drives Ellie nuts when he puts files back out of order, since she always tries to rearrange them alphabetically. When she brings it up to him, he just shrugs and smiles and tells her that he put it back in the correct year, so it's no big deal.
Obviously, he doesn't need to shower or bathe, and doing so would probably ruin all his processors. If he gets dusty/dirty on a job, he'll wipe his face and hands down with a wet rag when he gets home.
While the cigarettes do nothing for him chemically or physically, the ritual of lighting one and smoking it brings him comfort when he's stressed. An old habit from human Nick. It does leave a slight sooty residue on some of his internal parts and probably clogs a few fans/vents, but he just patiently cleans them with a rag during his repairs sessions. It's worth it to him for the comfort of smoking.
Although he's friendly to Piper, he doesn't actually like her that much. He thinks her newspaper is pretty disreputable, more spreading rumors than actual news, and her inflammatory articles about synths and the Institute have drastically escalated the hostility he's faced living in Diamond City. Still, he empathizes with Piper and the fears people have about synths, so he keeps his mouth shut. She still gets on his nerves sometimes, though.
I have so many more, but I'll stop here for now. I am quite thoroughly obsessed with this guy, so if anyone wants to hear more hcs about him, or hcs about some specific aspect of his character, my asks are always open. I could talk about this guy for hours.

Still cleanin'!
Ramping up for hosting on Friday so I've shifted over from "stuff I've been needing to do" to more, I guess you could say localized cleaning. I did all the dishes that had been mounting up, including cleaning out the fridge and emptying out some tupperware and washing that, plus washing the dishes I use for hosting since they get dusty at times. The living room floor has been swept, vacuumed, and steamed, and the rugs have been vacuumed and shampooed. I am going to have to figure out a new carpet shampooer eventually, I think; this one, even designed for pet hair, clogs way too easily.
I need to declutter the living room a little but that can wait, and I'm hoping to move the donation stuff out of the hallway so it's more passable (it's not blocked, just narrow). I am really hoping to wash the bathroom floor, but that's lowest priority since the rest of the bathroom is pretty clean. I have to pick up a few snack supplies, probably going to do that today ahead of the last-minute Thanksgiving rush.
There's still a lot on my "do this in November" list, I'll be honest, and I doubt all of it will get done, but the vital stuff did. I'd really like to take down and replace my vent hood (I have a new hood) but I might end up asking the building super to do that. And no point in doing the deep-clean on the kitchen floor until that's done, anyway.
Listened to some music today while I cleaned, actually; in the "music we like" venn diagram, Breakfast Date and I barely overlap but we do at some really key points, so I've been listening to a few names they dropped. I don't think I'll ever be a fan of metal or psychedelia generally, but there's plenty of music in the world to try.
