The Hidden Dangers of Ignoring Dryer Vent Cleaning
Many homeowners diligently maintain their homes but often overlook hidden elements like dryer vents, which can lead to severe consequences. Neglecting regular dryer vent cleaning not only hampers the performance of your dryer but also significantly raises the risk of a house fire. Understanding these risks is key to safeguarding your home and loved ones.
The Fire Risk from Clogged Dryer Vents
One of the most alarming dangers of skipping dryer vent maintenance is the heightened risk of fire. As lint and debris accumulate in the vent, they restrict airflow, causing the dryer to overheat. Since lint is highly flammable, excessive heat can easily ignite it, leading to a fire within the vent system. This makes dryer vent cleaning a crucial safety measure. Regularly clearing out lint and debris can dramatically lower this risk, making your home safer.
Signs Your Dryer Vent Needs Cleaning
Several warning signs can indicate a blocked dryer vent. If your dryer takes longer to dry clothes or if your laundry room feels unusually hot during a cycle, it’s time to inspect the vent. You might also notice that the dryer feels hotter than normal or that your clothes have a musty smell after drying. These signs shouldn’t be ignored, as continuing to use the dryer in this condition increases the chances of malfunction or fire. Prompt action can prevent bigger problems down the road.
The Cost of Neglecting Dryer Vent Cleaning
In addition to safety risks, neglecting your dryer vent can result in costly repairs or even the need for a replacement appliance. When vents are clogged, your dryer must work harder, accelerating wear and tear. This not only shortens the appliance's lifespan but also drives up energy bills as the dryer becomes less efficient. Regular vent cleaning keeps your dryer running smoothly and efficiently, saving you from unnecessary expenses over time.
Why Professional Cleaning Services Matter
While some homeowners attempt to clean dryer vents themselves, professional services offer a level of thoroughness that DIY efforts often can’t achieve. Technicians use specialized tools to remove deep-seated blockages and can identify hazards like damaged ducts or improper vent setups. Hiring a professional ensures your dryer is not only free of lint but also safe from potential hidden dangers. It’s a small investment that provides peace of mind and helps your appliance perform at its best.
Neglecting dryer vent cleaning isn’t just a matter of appliance maintenance—it’s a serious safety issue. Regular cleaning helps your dryer run efficiently and protects your home from the very real threat of fire.

Trying to get laundry done today and I opened up our dryer's lint trap only to find it damp and also found the inside of the dryer a bit damp so now all of our wet clothes are divided between 2 drying racks as I'm trying to figure out the possible reasons what the hell is going on
#uuuuuugghhhhhhhhh#was the dryer previously overfilled#was the previous load of clothes too bulky or too wet#is it just bc the dryer was closed up and not left open to air out#or is there a clog in the vent somewhere

How Often Should You Clean Your Dryer Vent? Expert Insights
Taking care of your dryer vent is one of those household tasks that often slips through the cracks, yet it's crucial for both your dryer's efficiency and your home's safety. Regular cleaning of the dryer vent can significantly reduce fire risks and keep your dryer performing at its best. But when should you schedule this maintenance? Here’s what the professionals recommend.
Why Dryer Vent Cleaning Matters
Your dryer does a great job of removing moisture from your clothes, but over time, lint and debris can start to clog the vent. This buildup doesn’t just slow down your dryer's efficiency; it also creates a serious fire hazard. The U.S. Fire Administration reports that thousands of home fires each year are traced back to clogged dryer vents. Maintaining your dryer vent is a vital step in preventing these dangers and ensuring your dryer operates smoothly.
Signs It’s Time for a Dryer Vent Cleaning
While it’s wise to clean your dryer vent regularly, certain warning signs indicate when it might be necessary to do so sooner. If your clothes are taking longer to dry, the dryer feels unusually hot, or you detect a burning odor when the dryer is on, it’s a clear sign that your vent is clogged and needs immediate attention.
How Often Should You Clean Your Dryer Vent?
A good rule of thumb is to clean your dryer vent at least once a year. However, the frequency might vary depending on your household size and how often you use the dryer. For larger families or those who run the dryer frequently, experts advise scheduling a cleaning every six months. Pet owners should also consider more frequent cleanings due to the extra lint and fur that can accumulate.
Tips to Reduce the Need for Frequent Cleanings
To cut down on how often you need to clean your dryer vent, consider adopting some proactive habits. Clean the lint trap after every load, avoid overloading your dryer, and make sure the venting system is correctly installed. These simple practices can help reduce lint buildup, improving your dryer's efficiency and extending the intervals between professional cleanings.
Regular dryer vent maintenance is a smart investment in both safety and the longevity of your appliances. By keeping an eye on the signs that your vent needs attention and scheduling cleanings accordingly, you can ensure your dryer runs safely and efficiently for years to come.

Prompt: laundry day
Tommy does not want to wake up. It's the day he has to do Most Dreaded Chore: Laundry.
He's certain that if he does go to hell because of the whole gay thing, his punishment will be to do laundry for eternity. Sorting. Washing. Drying. Ironing. Folding. Hunting down stray socks.
Before he even runs the dryer, he will need to clean out the lint trap and then check the vent. The past week the 217 ground crew had to help with not one, not two, but three houses that caught fire because of vents clogged up with lint. Tommy is feeling a little paranoid.
Grumbling, he rolls out of bed and pulls on the very last shirt and pants combo he has left: a faded green tee with holes in the side and a pair of purple shorts from his, let's say more... exhibitionist, days.
He's trying to work out whether Evan's teal sweater should be parked under delicates or darks when the owner of the sweater enters the bedroom, armed with a tray of breakfast. It smells so good that Tommy's stomach rumbles loudly in complaint, but Tommy doesn't move. No eating until the first load is in the machine.
"Hey, you're up," Evan says brightly. He sets the tray of food on the nightstand and joins Tommy on the floor. "What are you doing?"
"Trying to figure out how to wash this sweater," Tommy says.
Evan takes it, looks at the label, and glances around. "Honey, what is your system?"
"Darks here, lights here. Then tops, bottoms, socks and underwear." Tommy points to each pile. Then he holds up the knit sweater. "I don't know if this will shrink in the wash or not."
Evan stares at him. Then he heaves a sigh. "Okay. How have you mastered flying a chopper but don't know how to sort dirty laundry? Go. Have breakfast. I'll do this round and then I'll teach you."
"What? No, there's no need-"
"Thomas Kinard. Go eat the breakfast I cooked for you. Drink your coffee made the way you like it." Evan hauls Tommy to his feet and pushes him in the direction of the bed, smacking his ass in his tiny purple shorts for good measure. "Don't even come near this part of the room until you've finished breakfast."
Bossy Evan is very sexy in Tommy's eyes, but his hunger for actual food outvotes his libido. As he scarfs down scrambled eggs and pancakes, Evan is re-sorting the pile, muttering under his breath that he should put up a chart of care tags here and at Eddie's, this is why home economics should be mandatory for grown adults living alone, etc.
Tommy is about halfway through when Evan carts the first load off to the laundry room. Eyeing the piles left behind warily, Tommy wonders what complicated system he's going to learn.
Evan comes back. "Finish your food," he orders. But he's smiling as he says it, so clearly Tommy's lack of competence in washing his dirty clothes has not turned him off yet.
"Thank you," Tommy says, "for the food and for that." He gestures to the piles on the floor.
Evan joins him on the bed, accepting a slice of tomato from the end of Tommy's fork. "A third of those clothes are mine anyway." He chews and swallows. "Anyway, you had some concept, so it's not like I had to do it from scratch." Then, as Tommy eats the rest of his breakfast, Evan talks about reading care labels, sorting by color and fabric, and how he learned to hand wash delicates after ruining some very expensive lingerie belonging to an ex-girlfriend.
Tommy can't look away from Evan's animated face and the way he can't keep his hands still as he speaks, and he thinks, I want to keep him forever.
"Move in with me," Tommy says.
Evan stops mid-spiel. "What?"
"Move in with me," Tommy repeats. "Not... Not because you can cook or do the laundry, that's not the reason why I'm saying it. It's just. I like this. I love this. The whole bit where I wake up and I don't have to remember if you're here or at the loft, and we can steal bites from each other's meals, and I can look after you the way you look after me. And you already have my key. We can meal prep together, and I can do the dirtier chores, I can scrub the toilets and unclog the vents - don't run the dryer until I do - and maintain your Jeep, and we can fall asleep together whenever we don't have overnights."
It's a lot of words for him to say at one go, and Tommy feels himself faltering near the end. Licking his lips, Tommy swallows dryly. He reaches for Evan's slack hand.
"I love you and I want to be with you as often as possible. If you prefer to keep the loft, then it's also okay, I'm not pressuring you to-"
Evan shuts him up with a firm kiss. Then he smiles into the kiss. "Yes. I'll move in with you. My lease is almost up anyway."
Tommy exhales. Then he nudges Evan's nose with his own. "Alright. Let me drink my coffee, and I'll go check on the vent, and then you can teach me how to sort our dirty clothes."
"Okay. I'm gonna go find out what you have in your kitchen so I won't bring duplicates."

the mice keep stealing all the stone wool insulation packed around the dryer vent exhaust pipe, which is not ideal for me or my heating bill, but i have a wimpy weak heart and could not sleep for thinking of the little mices all cold and suffering, so i spent FOURTY FUCKING MINUTES raking all sorts of leaves and grasses up, stole the shredder from the back office and work (and clogged it to shit) to make it nice and fine, + got a pillowcase full of sheep's wool discards from a friend, unscrewed the deck boards, and dumped it all under there.
i hope these little meeses and mouses understand and appreciate what i have done for them

PSA to my folks who have dryers and have to do their own maintenance: Check. Your. Dryer. Vent.
Everyone talks about the lint trap inside the machine, but no one ever warned me about the dryer duct and vent itself. If it's taking a long time for your clothes to dry and there's hardly any lint in the trap, check your duct and external vent! Because more likely than not, it's clogged to hell and back!
Our washer and dryer are in the basement and the duct leads directly outside, so it was relatively easy enough for me to disconnect both ends. Have a bucket ready though! If your vent is clogged, then a bunch of moisture may have accumulated and now you've got nasty water surprising you as it leaks all over your floor! After that though, clear out your vent and wipe out as much lint in the duct as you can. I guess you can use a vacuum for this? But I didn't have time for that!
Seriously, lint build-up is a serious fire hazard, and I'm lucky my brother suggested checking the vent when I told him our dryer was on the fritz. If you don't have as easy access to your duct and vent, or if you're not able-bodied, try reaching out to a friend or family member who's handier than you, or hire a handyman (if you can afford it) to do it for you.
(Below is the lint I extracted from the vent, and the water I had to drain from the duct) [that's not a full gallon bucket, it's more like the size of a standard sand castle bucket, for reference]
#ash blabs#i don't know how to tag this uhhh#home maintenance#i am by NO MEANS A PROFESSIONAL I'm just a queer 25 yo whose landlords are Old People#so I've gotta take care of some things myself#for my other 20-somethings who were Never-Taught or Vaguely-Taught

Filters
The purpose of a filter is to remove unwanted particles from liquid or air. However, as the filter does its job, the collected particles start clogging the filter, so more pressure is required to push the liquid or air through the filter. Pushing the liquid or air through the clogged filter requires more energy, so changing or cleaning filters regularly saves energy and can also prolong the life of the appliance.
Change filters on your air conditioner and furnace about every three months if you’re using an average quality filter. This can reduce electricity usage by the appliance by up to 15 percent. If the outdoor air is very dusty or smoky, change filters more often.
Clean the coils on the air conditioner using a brush and either coil cleaner or dish detergent and water. Dirty evaporator coils can increase energy usage by up to 40 percent.
Clean lint from the clothes dryer after every load. A plugged lint trap reduces the dryer efficiency, so more energy is used to dry the clothes. Other areas of the dryer vent system can trap lint and reduce efficiency as well, so find out how to safely clean those areas or hire a professional vent cleaning company.
Air filters and oil filters in your car should be changed regularly per the manufacturer’s instructions to extend the life of your car.
Appliances like vacuum cleaners generally have filters. The owner’s manual will tell you how to find and clean the filter. The appliance will perform more efficiently and last longer if the filters are clean.

I'm so butch.
My dryer wasn't drying so It had to be fixed! I will recount the events.
First I unplugged the big bitch
Then I moved the dryer from the wall so that I could get behind it, as well as pull a shop vac back there. From behind it I removed the clamp that attached the flexible vent hose to the air vent at the back of the dryer. With the vent opened I ran the hose for the shop vac inside of the flexible vent hose and sucked out and stuck debris, I did the same inside the dryer vent hole. I expected there to be a large clog somewhere inside but I didn't find it.
Notes: the metal vent port in the back of the dryer is made from sheet metal. It is very sharp, don't cut your fingers like me.
I couldn't find anything indicating a clog from the back, so I went to the front. I had to remove the housing for the lint screen. This was very difficult because there were 5 screws, 2 in the front of the dryer and 3 on the inside. They were all different sizes so I separated them into piles. After removing the screws the housing came apart in 2 pieces. One was the flappy bit that says "insert lint screen here" the other was the inside wall, that didn't get fully removed because there was some electrical wires connecting it that I didn't wanna fuck with.
With the housing removed I found the problem, it was a 3 inch deep pile of lint, cat hair, and dog hair, and dimes. It had blocked most of the air flow out of the dryer it seems. I tried to suck it out and my vaccume clogged and wouldn't run. I will have to take it apart to fix it later. Undeterred I grabbed a pair of tongs and began to remove all the debris by hand. This was very dirty work, please wear a mask if you do it. I didn't and I am feeling very silly about it as I write. Additionally the inside parts of the dryer are made of sheet metal and are very sharp. Wear gloves if you try this bc I cut my fingers up.
Notes: wear PPE mask and gloves, try to properly light the area, I put my phone in the dryer and it DID NOT help.
Finally having removed sufficient debris I began to put everything back together, interior wall, screws, reattach the flexible vent hose (in the future id like to use rigid venting but that's currently out of the scope of my abilities), plug it back in, and push the dryer back against the wall. You maybe be saying, Elle it sounds like you forgot something and you would be right. I forgot to put the flappy bit back on. So I had to remove the 5 screws holding the housing in place and replace the flappy bit and put the 5 screws back. It was frustrating.
Final notes: the biggest difficulty for me was a lack of proper lighting. If you can bring a portable lamp I would recommend you do. Also PPE. Where I live it probably would have cost us 300 bucks to get this fixed. It took me 10 minutes of googling and an hour of struggling (I'm not as able bodied anymore). I'm hopeful that I've resolved the issue, if I haven't we will consider calling a technician.
Tools: I used a Philips head screwdriver and a shop vac. You could dry it with a regular vaccume with a hose attachment, but this broke my shop vac so you should be confident that you can repair it. Also a great amount of queer audacity.

Fathers day
So, I am laying in bed this morning about 7am, and I am thinking about Fathers Day. What the day is going to bring, and what Fathers Day is all about. After all, I am still a rookie. I’ve only been a Dad for 33 years.
It was at that moment, when Liz says “ oh yeah, the dog got in your elephant ears chasing a rabbit. “ Of course that meant fix them.
Then, after I got back in from that, Liz says “ the dryer vent fell off. “
Of course that means fix it.
What’s this got to do with Fathers Day?
Well, as a dad, in my case a girl dad, you realize you are the fixer of things.
Whether it is a broken bicycle, or a Barbie’s arm.
A drain clogged with more hair than an 80’s MTV band.
A scraped knee or elbow.
A flat volleyball.
A broken heart.
Dads are doers. If we do it right, we show them the joys of doing things.
Whether it is playing a game with them in the street, showing them how to navigate traffic in between points.
Listening to good music and them singing with you.
Watching scary shows and screaming loudly.
How to check your own oil ( although that still rarely happens ).
Raising girls is like playing a basketball game and the possession arrow is always pointing in their direction.
But as grumpy as you act, it is all worth it. Every single time. And even after 33 years, it is still worth it knowing that I am a Dad.
I know that others will come along and take their attention. But they can’t take my place.
I am their Dad. And no one else will ever get to be that.
I think my own Dad would be happy with me.

Obligatory first patio sit of the season… just home from a productive therapy session and cleaned out the clogged dryer vent so the house doesn’t burn down. It’s 60 and breezy and the sun on my face feels like heaven. I should pick up dog shit in the back yard but I only have ten min and just want to sit here for a few before I go pick up Lila for her light therapy and a Trader Joe’s trip. Lots to digest from my session around the link between dopamine hits, my self-perception, and external validation in relationships.

6:00 PM - Christmas party with our friends will commence
2:00 PM - Sheila tells me, after I woke up from my well-deserved nap, that the inside of the house has dropped to 63°F despite the thermostat being set to 68°F. My quilt and electric blanket had kept me quite comfortable, so I didn’t wake up cold.
2:10 PM - I look inside the furnace. Open the hood, kick a tire. That always helps, right? A solid green light and a blinking green light greet me. It’s one half of Christmas colors. Yay! Google describes error code numbers, but I don’t find a solid answer on a mixture of solid and blinking lights.
2:20 PM - Always an optimist, I think: If we have a dozen people in the house, and light a fire in the fireplace, that should keep us warm even if the outside temperature is -12°F, right? Seeing everyone’s breath might even look festive! I have a portable space heater for emergencies. I could use it, but that’s as silly as wanting to try out the fire extinguisher.
2:40 PM - It’s dropped another degree inside. Ugh. I’d better call the furnace place now. They are local guys and always have provided super service.
2:42 PM - I reach a technician who said would be over soon. My hope had been to get someone in the next four hours. He was at my home in ten minutes.
3:00 PM - The problem is a clogged air intake. Lint from a nearby dryer vent and some leaves had blocked it. This has never happened before, but it makes sense. A cover in front of the vent kept me from figuring out this on my own. The technician shows me what to do if this occurs in the future, saving me a service call. I will never call anyone else but this company for my future HVAC needs.
3:15 PM - The furnace is humming along nicely. The inside temperature has risen one degree.
3:20 PM - As I pay the modest bill I chat with the technician. With the severe weather I’m curious if the company gets many overnight calls. I assumed they had 24 hour emergency service. He said he was just getting ready to go home for a long holiday weekend when I called. They are closed tomorrow. 24 hour emergency service isn’t something they can do now, because they can’t get enough technicians. I am extremely happy I didn’t dither around for another half hour before calling.
7:30 AM - The house is toasty warm and a ceramic mug of coffee warms my hands even more. I survey the kitchen. Wow, we enjoyed a lot of wine last night. I’m pleased that I filled and started the dishwasher before going to bed last night. Any neighbors still sleeping are awakened by the sound of me filling the recycling bin.
