"No man should be tried by his own blood kin!” Oh, you do no know how I rubbed my hands together with maniacal glee when I read those words. How quickly Mechan forgot his public denouncement...

In Organe’s Great Hall in Castle Bane, hung with captured battle banners, I lowered my hand from the strings of my lute. I had just finished performing a ballad of my own making called Morgon’s Plot. It was a memorial to True Thomas, my mentor in the making of song. He was Queen Organe’s dearly loved and still lamented former Consort. The song was also a savage satire of the dragon Morgon Blackmane.
The applause began in a lackluster way. Only Earl Braxon was truly enthusiastic until Organe clapped loudly and called out, “Well done, Rodoric, my Love!”
At that, the Court began a loud applause. I bowed and resumed my seat at Organe’s Left Hand. Braxon leaned over from his place next to me and said heartily, “That is a well done tune, Lord Caer Dunn! May I have a copy of it to have it played in both my court and the taverns of Desmarche? I think that my people will like it immensely!”
“I would be honored, Earl Desmarche,” I said, and meant it. The Earl does not like me. I am a mortal and he has a long standing hate of mortals. Unlike most Immortals, his hate has a good reason. Mortals murdered his family before his eyes in the deadly years before the Great Separation.
Braxon, though, was a rare being in any court. A truly honest man. He was the Queen’s Man and tried to put aside his feelings for Organe’s sake. We got along because of that. More, I knew that I could trust him.
Organe wiped an eye, and said softly, “I thank you, Rodoric, for the tribute to Thomas. I do miss him still, thirty and one years since he was taken from me.” Her mercurial mood lightened and she added, “I loved the satire, too, though I doubt Me that Morgon will, when she hears it.”
Braxon scowled slightly, puzzled, not offended, and asked, “I heard things in your song that I did not know, Lord Rodoric, and I played an important role in defeating Mechan, Earl Blackwood’s army. Of course I did know that Morgon’s cunning was behind the revolt, and I knew that she and the dragon Wara broke ranks at a key point in the battle. How did our Queen know where Morgon’s hoard was? I thought that it, like all dragon hoards, was well hidden.”
Organe leaned delicately across me to answer him herself. As she was in her humanlike form, this was utterly delightful to me. “Do not ask that question, Lord Braxon. What I did might be done against Me, were it known. Be content for now with the knowledge that Morgon lost nearly a fourth part of her Hoard for her efforts against Me.”
Kleesley, the new Duke of Blackwood, spoke up from Organe’s right. “Why, my Queen did you give back so much of Wara’s Hoard when you had it safely stolen?”
Organe actually smiled radiantly at him and answered, “Wara the Golden was behaving properly for a dragon. She had a chance to steal Hoard from another dragon, so she helped Morgon against Me. She did not like Morgon’s tactics.
“It was Morgon who sent my Thomas into an exile from which even my powers were helpless to retrieve him. It was Morgon who tried to kidnap Desora, my daughter by Thomas. Wara thought that to be so wrong that her covert help allowed me to find, recover and hide Desora from all.”
I looked up. That was new to me. Organe, I had long ago learned, never revealed anything without purpose. Was something in the wind?
Organe continued, “When Wara’s Hoard was raided, it was part of a plan to keep Morgon from guessing who had betrayed Desora’s hiding place. I rewarded Wara’s help by returning all but Desora’s Dower of Theft.”
Kleesley looked puzzled in his turn. “How, my Queen, is losing a half a cartload of treasure a reward?”

GREEN VELVET, part 3

<==Previous
“Not quite what I mean, Your Majesty,” I said. “Give me leave to get something that I saw in your chamber.” With the aid of Cadley and the page Carlieu, who had recently returned from his errand, I brought out the map, bulky in its frame.
Organe asked Cadley conspiratorially, “How goes the laying of the ghost? Why is it green? Do you want to return to your duties?”
Cadley said, “I will serve to Your Majesty’s need. My mother was a green ghost for rage at my part in the entertainers’ tax. She loved minstrels. I was able to show her where her anger should be spent and she is leaving the estate at peace.” We set down the big framed map that we were carrying. It was heavy.
Organe looked blankly at the map. “How will this help us? I do not know where their Hoards are. I said that.”
“Majesty, this” I said, waving at the map, “shows the extent of Your Hoard. It represents it, like those account books that you touched to determine their truth. It shows where the various parts of your Hoard are. Here,” I guided the outer claw of her left paw to point with, “is the treasury of Bane. Here,” I moved her claw again, “is the treasury of Ilsk.”
“This,” she moved her claw with utter sureness, “is the treasury at Wellfarme and here, Blackwood.”
Point to the treasury of Alfar,” I suggested.
“I cannot,” she said, brow wrinkled in concentration, “they have nothing of Mine.”
“I thought as much, My Lady, You use the map by magic. Point to those things of Yours in Morgon Blackmane’s Hoard.” Her claw pointed unerringly at one of the mountains about forty miles from the northern border. She bared her fangs in a wicked grin, “And here is Wara’s! I know that cave. I used it in My youth, before I took up this life.”
Critically, she eyed the two locations. “They are closer to each other than is usually comfortable for our kind. I will wager that it is the wealth of My land that drew them so close together.”
“The nearest flowing water to each?” I asked, pleased that the map had worked so well.
Her claw flicked cheerfully at the map. “Here, not fifty feet from Wara’s cave. Morgon’s is less than a hundred yards.”
She changed with the familiar rustle. I found pleasant arms about my neck and eager lips at mine. “Oh, Rodoric,” she murmured, nibbling my ear, “such a gift! You have connected Maps to My Hoard, and in the doing, you have given me every Dragon Hoard in the land!”

Anyone else fricken LOVE Valheim??
I very sincerely hope it’s where I wind up when I die the idea of ranching lizard-cows and farming turnips and slaying zombies and keeping wolves as pets is my idea of a cozy time
Anyway the Swamp is by far my favorite zone, it’s so menacing and atmospheric; it feels like a classic fantasy adventure the most of all zones imo. I wish I could grow crops there so I could enjoy the vibes at all times but alas my carrots n onions will not flourish!
I hope you like my Swamp fanart haha
