That's so effing stupid.

No, not the fact that schools encourage sterile memorization and contextless facts, or that knowing the date things happened are no substitute for why they happened.

But that "oh dates are not important - the "reasons" are" - both are. Both are important. You don't need to know the exact minute of the day the Brest-Litovsk Treaty was signed, but it'd be truly useful to know when each country joined the WWI, or WWII.

"When did the attack on Pearl Harbor happened?"

"Oh, sometimes in the '40s."

That's how you sound.

You can't know history if you don't know dates, like you can't if you don't know geography. So if you wanna be considered knowledgeable in history, find a way to learn both, as precisely as you can. Because when you hear when and where something happened, even if you don't know the exact events leading up to it, you can make an educated guess given the contextual historical knowledge, and thus you don't know just the particular "whys" of one particular event, but learn to recognize the patterns of "whys" that make history up.
