love how sam was just doing whatever the fuck he wanted on that stage. the man contributed maybe three plot points to the overall storyline and spent the rest of the longform being drunk, antagonizing aj, and showing off his knowledge of power tools through stagecraft.

something that I really love about Clarissa's DIY Wedding is that it isn't that easy to root only for Mark or only Amanda
usually in media either the guy is at best forgetable and at worst a dick and we root for the lesbian best friend (sometimes even when the creator doesn't want us to because they don't know how to write romance) or (when the creator is feeling a little lesbiphobic) the lesbian bestie is pushie as fuck and/or tries to sabotage the heterosexual relationship
but in Clarissa's DIY Wedding there's on one side Mark, very clearly struggling with childhood trauma & a messy relationship with his father but trying his best, and on the other Amanda, who wants her friend to be happy above all and doesn't interrupt the wedding even when 3 other people did it already (and some of them did it for stupid reasons)
on one side two people who clearly love each other, albeit not very well but seemingly willing to work on it, and on the other childhood bestfriends to lovers?????
and you expect me to choose? you expect me to want one to win at the expense of the other?????

First thoughts on Clarissa's DIY Wedding:
AJ messing up the name right at the beginning despite it being part of the title was iconic. So is him sticking with the wrong name
Tom championing for Amanda and Clarissa to get together was great. I'm sure there will be fanfics about these two
Luke switching from laughing at the sidelines to crying his eyes out was incredible. The actor you are, Mr Manning
Sam doing his own thing as the DIY guy was absolutely hilarious - as was Tom and AJ creating a subplot while Clarissa and her mum were talking
And finally, a reminder for myself: have some pizza the next time you watch it

oh god i feel sick-
imagine mark, sweet seven year old mark who couldn't save his mother from his own father.
mark, a child, feeling a burning sense of guilt because he was supposed to help, he was supposed to be there, he's the one who has to keep them happy-
a traumatised seven year old who thinks he killed his mum (his father has said this, but they all know that it's true, mark should have saved her).
a desperate seven year old who turns to the church to get some of the dirt and shame and guilt and anger out (it's eating him alive).
a seven year old in a confessional booth.
"oh, i thought you were saying you killed someone. that happens sometimes, and people tell us."
what if that was referring to little mark.

Mark. I have so many thoughts about Mark. A boy growing up with an alcoholic for a father (he still hasn't stopped. Perhaps he can't, thinks Mark. Or won't). He turns to the local priest, seeking solace, but finds more jibes. More ridicule. More reminders of the fateful day when he failed to stop his father from getting behind the steering wheel. It's his fault, isn't it? Who cares if he was seven, he was already holding the tattered household together, he should've been more forceful, should've scolded and fought and gently guided his reeling father back inside should've done more but he didn't. He couldn't. He failed them and all he had to show for it was a coffin and his father's racous voice calling his name and a scar he swore he'd never let anybody touch because he'd be damned if he let anybody ignore him the way his father had when he'd spoken up, asking him, pleading him, to get out of the car. He'd be damned if he ever let anybody make him feel that powerless and small ever again.
Mark is such a great character and such a great example of how one's childhood affects one's behaviour as an adult. I love how you can see the traces and effects of the incidents of his childhood and his upbringing in his behaviour in the play. I love how you can see him try to deal with his problems but in all the wrong ways. Because he needs to hear an apology. He just needs his father to own up and say “i'm sorry”, to say, “it wasn't your fault, it was mine”.
But he ends up seeking this sense of closure through Clarissa.

No but imagine you're Mark for a minute. You live with your alcoholic father, your father who blames you for your mother's death, your mother who died because your father was drunk driving. And yet you're the one who shouldered the burden.
You grow up like this. That's fine, you tell yourself, because what else can you say?
You meet this wonderful woman. Her name is Suzanne (or is it Clarissa?) and she makes you feel whole again, like your guilt and trauma are nothing more than the past. After everything, you see a ray of light shining through.
And so you propose, wanting to spend the rest of your life with this wonderful woman. But just as you're on one knee with the ring in your hand, your girlfriend casts you aside and answers a phone call. This isn't the first time she's done this.
You call the engagement off, but you still want things to heal (how could you not?) and so you try. You try again to heal your relationship, because you love her and you want to make things right. But she does it again. She brushes off your feelings and makes you feel like you're no more than a sewer rat, scurrying from bin to bin and hiding in the walls. And to rub salt on the wound, when you try to express yourself, she calls you hotheaded and dismisses your feelings.
Like damn, Mark was just going through it the entire longform.
