About ClaireCarmy (Opinion)

Carmy’s family (Richie, Steve, Mikey, Fak) anyone who was trying to set Carmy and Claire up,

never had good intentions for Claire or for Carmy.

They had an image of what a good man who makes it out looks like in their heads:

He gets the girl, he’s got the job, he takes care of his family.

They wanted Carmy to be their ticket out of dysfunction and generational problems. They wanted to live vicariously through him and Claire was just a “pretty cookie cutter wife” that fit that white picket fence image.

Carmy was a guy like them who had a chance to make it out and prove they could too.

Most of this show is Mikey and Richie living vicariously through Carmy and Carmy allowing them to because he feels like he owes to it them not to live a life he wants.

He doesn’t want the white picket fence (at least not now or like this) he just knows that people have told him that’s what he should want with Claire.

He lives in spite of people.

“Fuck you, watch this.” And he’s still unhappy.

In my heart I still know that Gretchen with all her true crime weird girl energy, Zach with his filmmaking skills and Claire with her literal ability to get cut open and have limbs torn off without being harmed are out there being gay and making low budget slasher movies together in the woods. Not a S3 prediction, just a wish. BC if Claire is still around at this point of the shooting, (and so is Luca BTW) which by now should be wrapping the last eps of S3, it means that Carmy most likely got back together with her, (as I did kinda predict in Heart) it’s totally IC guilty behavior for him, and even tho I expected it, I’m not here for it.

So if that’s the case, I hope Luca fucks Sydney outta the way. That’s what Carmy deserves. My Sydcarmy expectations and endgame wishes can totally wait. I want him to suffer.

YES! *but there is a chance that Claire Nolastname clarified that her mom was alive and thriving bc usually people store boxes in storage units when they clean up a house after someone dies, maybe it wasn't that unhinged. That being said, YES. Still yes.

Also, I'm positive Claire's cousin hadn't bailed on her so conveniently, and that was just a "white lie" she told the man she wanted to fuck since Pre-K to have an excuse to call him to a number HE HADN'T GIVEN HER, and ask him "out" without asking him out on an actual date, because: How can you ask a guy out on a date right after you established he actually gave you the wrong number and you had to bend over backward to get the right one? That was a total manipulation and a sneaky move.

The conversation about the death of Sydney's mom in 2x9 is so unhinged. At first we're made to think Carmy's responding the way 99.9% of people would to hearing about someone's dead loved one - "I'm sorry" - but no, before his mind arrives at that automatic human response, his first thought is to apologize for not knowing this deeply personal fact about his girlfriend business partner: I'm sorry...I feel like I should have known that. The writers know what they we doing. Especially in the context of the next part of the conversation. Syd immediately shuts down what she thinks is the token apology she's been on the receiving end of for 20+ years. I honestly don't think she even hears what he says after "I'm sorry". It's only after she shuts him down for what she thinks is the token apology that Carmy actually gives said token apology. For whhyyy did they write I feel like I should have known that. I mean we know why but let's do a quick Claire comparison. After creepily getting Carmy's number from Fak, this exchange happens in 2x3:

Claire: Okay can you just, can you just not make this weird? (the cognitive dissonance of this statement, Claire, babe...) Like I just need a favor. My cousin bailed on me.

Carmy: What, Big Denny?

Claire: No, Mac. Denny's dead.

Carmy: Oh. Damn, Denny.

Claire: Yeah, totally sucks, but I have to move all this shit for my mom who is not dead. She's absolutely thriving...(rest of convo is irrelevant to my point)

There was no narrative need to emphasize the fact that Claire's mom is alive (and thriving!) other than to directly contrast Sydney. You can't even say oh it's a throwback to the dark humor of S1 with the two "I'm not dead, my brother's dead" conversations Carmy has with the health inspector lady (1x2) and Mr. Szorski at Cicero's catering gig (1x4) because those scenes are dark and sad and funny because we know and care about Carmy and Mikey whereas we do not know or care about Big Denny or Claire's mom. Carmy and Mikey are the absolute driving forces of the show, especially in S1 whereas we never see or hear about those two other characters. But, interestingly, Carmy clearly knew Big Denny and didn't even respond with the (as established) token "I'm sorry." Whereas he looks absolutely anguished over Sydney's mom, a woman he's never met and knows absolutely nothing about. But he plays it like he's finding out about the death of his mother in law because he feels like he should have known. And yes, granted in this context dead mom > dead cousin on the emotional scale but still. Carmy's two reactions are so starkly opposite.

It's just so pointed to have Carmy react to the deaths of his girlfriend's and girl-who-is-a friend's relatives, no? We knew the reveal of Sydney's mom was coming because it's narratively relevant, it's such a formative part of Sydney (hence why it hits Carmy like a gut punch). But to unnecessarily bring up Claire's mom for what other reason than contrast with Sydney, right?

Okay, to bring it back to the scene in question - this man is able to pull the biggest smile and laugh from Syd all season by matching her energy and making a deadpan joke about her deceased mom. But it's fine because he doesn't think he's funny (1x8). He doesn't need to bring pleasure or amusement to others (2x10). I can't.

So let’s get this straight once and for all because it’s frankly getting on my nerves that no one sees it or twists it soooo blatantly:

When Miss Adamu said: SHE’S NOT EVEN YOUR GIRLFRIEND?!?! *eye rolling like the queen she is*

She didn’t mean to force Carmy to define or “label” Claire Nolastname or upgrade her from “girl who’s a friend” to Girlfriend. NOOOO!

THAT WAS HOW IT BACKFIRED ON HER because she couldn’t keep her mouth shut as a non-jealous woman would totally be capable of doing because she wouldn’t be triggered by the fact that the man she has started to (even though she's not nearly ready to admit it yet) develop feelings for or feels attracted to in a “crossing the line” kinda way, is sharing something soooo important, sooo significant, so THEIRS, as the menu of THEIR restaurant with a girl he’s just fucking… because for Syd, if Claire is not his GF, then he’s just fucking her. She’s a flint.

So THAT is what sent Syd. She didn't mean to make Carmy decide shit! about his relationship with this girl, but that’s what ended up happening. It backfired on her. Still, it was definitely unintentional on her part.

Because Carmy took the easy way out, he upgraded Claire to GF status so as not to have to face the fact that he was indeed sharing something so important WITH THE WRONG WOMAN, and in that way, he didn't have to face his true feelings for his partner like a man. He ran away with Claire, his sudden GF, as an easy way out, to hide behind that relationship. Period. We all know how that backfired for him in the back alley though...

He sensed that if he kept “working on the menu” with Syd at his place, cooking together and sharing more time outside the restaurant, they were gonna get too close because he wasn’t gonna be able to help it, he wasn’t gonna be strong enough to fight it if they kept building intimacy in the way they were doing it. Food is their link, they get closer through that, it is the passion they share.

That's why they are opening a restaurant together!

And that is why when Claire barged into his life uninvited - unlike Syd who was invited, as we can clearly see above - after he didn't remember her name and gave her the wrong number, and even hesitated in giving her the ride she conveniently "needed" to move her thriving mother's boxes to the storage, Carmy and Syd stopped cooking together and sharing food -The Kasamagate-.

In other words, Carmy and Syd stopped building intimacy together when Claire showed up, he enabled it, of course, because of the aforementioned reasons, until the under-the-table scene, where HE DID MAKE A DECISION after talking to Cicero and deciding to BE THAT GUY, not just for himself, but for Syd and with Syd.

And that is why that beautiful scene was musicalized like THIS.

And lastly, that is why once they were back, there was no more room for Claire in his life and well... Bye Felicia. Even though he managed to still dodge the bullet of having an adult conversation with her and let her down easy, she just overheard him because AGAIN she went in uninvited and got in the BOH at the "wrong time". She was just trying to see if he needed help because her ER brain immediately went to hypothermia, granted. But still... She was uninvited there and that´s why she ended up overhearing him and getting her heart broken.

Bonus track: Let's not forget who was on his mind before he freaked out like that, who he thought he had let down.

Wait! I got to it and it's delightful/hilarious. I would 100% watch/read drunk gay shenanigans with TFW culminating in a fire in the laundry room. Plus it incorporates Gabriel + Crowley which is my new chaos crack ship.

Ok, so here's my pitch that I refuse to write because I need a break now that my fic is done:

A case fic where something weird is happening at a family themed, all inclusive resort and Crowley (or Rowena) thinks it has to do with something hell-related, so they convince TFW to help them investigate.

To avoid suspicion and because the thing is attacking families, Cas and Dean and Eileen and Sam decide to bring the hunter kids along (Jack, Claire and Kaia). Crowley and Rowena also come because they are best able to recognize whatever hell-based beastie is involved.

Potential plot points:

Crowley is bitter that Dean and Cas are making heart eyes at each other and Rowena is irritated that Samuel refuses to admit he is a witch, so they keep interfering

Claire has major big sister vibes and keeps daring Jack to do dumb things and/or making shit up to screw with him

Sam and Eileen and Dean and Cas keep booking romantic add ons "for the case" because they have never gotten to do anything so luxurious and fun

Gabriel is there by coincidence. He has been resort hopping and hooking up. He and Crowley get together. They trap Sam and Eileen and Dean and Cas in some sort of unending romantic date to screw with them but it goes wrong because it ends up being a pretty nice break from the hunt

Gabriel and Crowley absolutely loathe each other but can't stop hooking up. The first time, Crowley does it to mess with his dear old mom. Fergus "Licked the Ground in Hell" McLeod and Gabriel "Uses Porns where a Text Would Have Sufficed" Nolastname get into some seriously depraved stuff and forget to let Sam, Eileen, Cas and Dean out of the date until the end of the vacation

Because the adults are tied up, nobody is there to stop Claire and Jack from getting into increasingly ridiculous situations. Jack wins a wet t-shirt contest. Claire accidentally opens a portal the fairy realm and has to steal all the cream from the resort kitchen. Jack gets freaked out parasailing and accidentally flies the entire boat to shore. Claire turn the pool rainbow colors as a gay treat.

Kaia is the only one actually investigating. She stabs *insert hell adjacent monster maybe Cerberus* on like day two and spends the rest of the time chasing after her idiot girlfriend (unfortunately, I love her) and her adult sized toddler brother

Hiiiii aosjdhdhdhdh okay so I just wanna say that I took ur uquiz and I'm so sorry for the absolute headcanon dump I did about everyone going to a resort lmao

Well now I can't wait to read it. Lol.

I have loved the responses so far which have ranged from really amazing head canons and fic recs to people lamenting that they shall never know peace again which, same.

It's happening at some point after the show ends, I can feel it! Bearnation, we just gotta organize our efforts toward that goal. And we have to start this year, before S4!

That's why the characters are like that, bc Storer originally envisioned them for a 2-hour movie. Then when that script turned into a TV script he had to take every layer of the characters and develop them, stretch them even, to make them fit a TV format, to have enough material for a whole season or even more in case the show got picked up.

Also, I bet Claire Nolastname (the underdeveloped character) wasn't part of the original movie script he drafted. Syd's was, and served the "open ending" purpose of that movie that never happened, kinda along the lines of what we ended up seeing in S1's finale: Braciole, where Syd & Carmy were not an item per se, but when she came back and stayed by accepting his offer of opening up a restaurant together -aka his "apology"- implied that they could potentially become one eventually because there was "something" there. That was the backbone of the gooey eyes and their silent dialogue before he actually pitched the idea of becoming partners.

In the case of a film, that storyline would have been only implied, never explicitly told, just an open ending, a hint, that's it because the movie was not about that, it was not a Romance movie so: "the untold love story of an EC and a CDC thriving at a new restaurant in Chicago after being in the pits of hell making sandwiches and setting things on fire in the kitchen." Full stop - would have been just a nice way to warp things up, nothing more. But now we are on the small screen, hence: S2 and all the Sydcarmy developments we saw there, in other words: the stretching and peeling off of the layers of the main characters and their relationship, (he trying to ask her out in the locker room but never really growing a pair to actually do it, her girl fan behavior while cooking together, her jealousy she can't even bring herself to admit when she found out about Claire, bc we all know it's not just about work and him ditching her to have a social life while she (and Nat) makes The Bear happen and puts in the work, the holding on to her notebook, the drawing their chaos menu while he should have been giving his time and attention to his "girl who was a friend", the panic attack, the conversation under the table, the custom jacket that I bet my ass he designed himself, the reminiscence of Syd when he's broken on the floor, trapped in the walk-in looking at the fennel and the radicchio → base ingredients of the dish they cooked together and ended up spitting out at his place) that explains why that storyline is now finally being told on TV and actually developed this way. And will continue being told like that throughout the show, in a slow-burn fashion most likely, as we have a 4 season span to fill.

My point is: WE HAVE MATERIAL FOR A MOVIE HERE BECAUSE THE BEAR WAS ORIGINALLY THOUGHT OF LIKE THAT. SO LET'S GET TO WORK ON MAKING THAT MOVIE HAPPEN ONCE THE BEAR ENDS. THEY ARE ALREADY PLANNING, AND PROBABLY SHOOTING BACK TO BACK, S4, WHICH MAY BE THE LAST ONE. I WANT A MOVIE A FEW YEARS LATER. WHO'S WITH ME? STORER SURE WILL BE, BECAUSE THAT WAS HIS ORIGINAL IDEA...
