Book Report: “Meredith, Alone” by Claire Alexander
Monday, 27 March 2023
I finished reading Meredith, Alone by Claire Alexander today.
I was drawn to it as the summary I’d found said it was about a woman who hadn’t left her home in 3 years. The book details why, and there is some really heavy stuff in the book. Like, sexual assault and child abuse / neglect. The mental health discussions in the book were very well done, I think, from my point-of-view as a person with a few mental illnesses myself.
I was just hoping that maybe the titular character wasn’t isolating due to extreme trauma, and I don’t think I was really ready for that. I don’t know if this happens to other readers, but I have the tendency it seems to internalize the emotions of the main characters, especially in books told in first-person point-of-view. It felt like some of my more recent depressive episodes might have been influenced by me identifying with the emotions of the main character too deeply.
I’m glad I read the book, however, and I’m looking into what else this author has written.

"meredith, alone" by claire alexander
read: december 2022
time taken to read: 4 days
disclaimer: not quite a review
"meredith, alone," was bittersweet from start to finish. i followed meredith's journey, front to back, in trying to leave her home after three years hiding from an inciting incident: being r*ped by her brother-in-law. healing from a traumatic childhood as well, mer finds support in her friends, sister, a volunteer foundation, chatrooms, and her cat. it made me pang for that crippingly human experience of anxiety, depression, ptsd, and so much more that we simply do not talk about enough. definitely would read again.

Meredith, Alone by Claire Alexander
What a lovely uplifting book. The story follows a woman, Meredith, who has not left her home in a few years due to an occurrence which, at the start of the book, we are unaware. The story follows Meredith through current life goings on, her childhood, and a few years before the beginning of the book. The writing was captivating, and took me through her tale quickly. It was a really swift read, and really wonderful if you're looking for something a little different than usual. It was definitely not your standard fare chick lit, and had twists and turns that you wouldn't necessarily have guessed.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who is looking for something a little different but that will get you immediately hooked and you will want to see how Meredith's story turns out.
