The Russian State Duma has introduced a bill to ban the adoption of Russian children by citizens of countries where gender transitions are legal.
What countries would be affected?
The ban would affect not just E.U. member states but also countries like Bolivia, Bhutan, Kyrgyzstan, and Pakistan, among others. However, according to an explanatory note attached to the bill, the restrictions are primarily aimed at NATO countries.
What countries would be left?
Judging by a report from the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association (ILGA), as of 2020, there were 39 countries whose laws would likely exempt them from Russia’s proposed ban. Most of these countries are in Africa, South America, and Asia.
Algeria
Benin
Burundi
Cameroon
Democratic Republic of the Congo
Egypt
Gambia
Liberia
Morocco
Nigeria
Rwanda
Tanzania
Tunisia
Uganda
Jordan
Myanmar
Brunei
Oman
Philippines
United Arab Emirates
San Marino
Bahamas
Belize
Dominica
El Salvador
Grenada
Haiti
Honduras
Nicaragua
Kiribati
Marshall Islands
Tonga
Vanuatu
Kuwait
Malawi
Indonesia
Malaysia
Lebanon
South Sudan
Do citizens of these countries currently adopt many Russian children?
None, at least according to official statistics. In 2023, foreign citizens are recorded as having adopted just six children from Russia; in five cases, the parents were Italian citizens, and in one case, they were French citizens. Both Italy and France allow gender transitions.
In its summary of last year’s adoptions by foreigners, the Russian Supreme Court mentions 16 cases; however, in the 10 cases not included in official statistics, the adopting parties were the children’s stepfathers. Their citizenship was not included in the summary due to privacy laws, but the proposed amendments would not affect them regardless of citizenship, because the process of adoption by stepparents is regulated by different legislation.
Only six in total? Were adoptions by foreigners more common before the war?
Yes, though the adoption rate of Russian children by foreign parents began to fall as early as 2012, when Russia banned the adoption of Russian children by U.S. citizens. In 2012, foreign citizens adopted 2,604 Russian children; in 2019, they only adopted 240.

These PR disasters defined the course for certain brands in 2019
No matter how many precautions you take, sometimes things go out of control. You cannot possibly prevent every single disaster that might come your way and PR campaigns are no exceptions. PR campaigns sometimes go wrong too, and sometimes you’re in the middle of a murky PR disaster with no scope of salvation. It is important to learn from mistakes (yours and others) to ensure your brand and organization is best prepared to save its reputation. And sometimes, it is best if we learn from other’s mistakes. With the year ending, here’s a look at some of the biggest PR mishaps of 2019:
Tesla’s Cybertruck launch
This goes up #1 because it’s my favourite fail of all times. Not only did Cybertruck’s unbreakable windows smash, leaving Elon Musk very red-faced, but also turned around the entire PR mishap into a unique sales opportunity for Tesla. The company now has more than 200,000 pre-orders, all through the window smashing incident.
youtube
While the initial incident dipped Tesla’s stock prices, the PR and media curiosity around Cybertruck eventually led to the huge spike in intrigue seen in the form of pre-orders. This is a one-off instance of “Any publicity is good publicity” that just turned out great for Cybertruck eventually.
The case of a split Nike shoe and a pregnancy debacle
youtube
The world’s largest and one of the most revered sports apparel brand suffered a major embarrassment this year when basketball player Zion Williamson’s Nike show fell apart during one of the biggest games of the year. He even ended up spraining his knee as a result of the mishap. This could have been a product liability case for Nike, let alone embarrassment in front of millions of views. The “Just Do It” brand has been known to be motivational and aspirational for people across the globe, this incident led to their stocks falling 1% on that trading date. Even with small incidents like a shoe breaking apart, it means a brand instantly loses an amount of trust and market cap among consumers.
Apart from that, the revered brand also was caught up in a compensation case around payments. It was reported that Nike would reduce the payments towards athletes if their performances fell short (even during pregnancy/childbirth). This opened a can of worms with regard of double standards. The company faced major backlash over cutting compensation during pregnancy and childbirth. Later, the company worked towards changing their policies.
Gillette’s “The Best Men Can Be campaign
youtube
Admittedly, this campaign by Gillette has been one of the bravest and clutter breaking campaign in the post #MeToo era. While the intention of the popular razor company was to start a conversation about men holding each other accountable, the campaign did not go down too well with their core target audience – men. This ad campaign is split in half and half with its appraise as well as criticism. The internet is abuzz with equal amounts of praise and backlash. MarketingWeek claimed the ad backfired on the brand and affected sales metrics.
The Great Indian CAA-NRC Uproar
Closer home, nothing has hit the country like the recent uproar over the Citizenship Amendment Bill and National Registry of Citizens. With millions out on the roads protesting the government’s move, this has probably snowballed into the biggest PR crisis for Bharatiya Janata Party in a very long time. While the future of the act is undecided at the time of writing of this article, people will look back as this moment being a landmark positioning factor for the political party in coming elections.
With 2020 inching closer, let’s hope they find recourse that helps in rebuilding brand credibility and equity.

Citizenship Act CAA Unconstitutional? 237 Petitions Before Top Court Today
Amid the row over the Centre's move to implement the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) weeks before Lok Sabha election, the Supreme Court will hear today a batch of 237 petitions challenging the law. A bench led by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud and comprising Justice JB Pardiwala and Justice Manoj Misra will hear the matter.
Tumblr media
Among the petitioners are Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), a political party primarily based in Kerala, and Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI), Congress leader Jairam Ramesh, Trinamool leader Mahua Moitra and AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi.
The day after the Centre notified CAA rules, the two organisations approached the Supreme Court, seeking a pause on the implementation of the law. They termed CAA "discriminatory" against the Muslim community.
Back in 2019, when the Citizenship Amendment Bill cleared the Parliament, multiple petitions had been filed against it. But the court had not paused its implementation because the rules had not been notified. On Friday, Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal told the court that there was no question of a pause back then since the rules were not notified. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta then said that the fact that the rules were notified before the elections was irrelevant.
Under this law, non-Muslim migrants from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan fleeing religious persecution can seek Indian citizenship. Persons from Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi or Christian communities from Afghanistan, Pakistan and Bangladesh, who entered India on or before December 31, 2014, are eligible to seek citizenship under CAA.
The Opposition has slammed the Narendra Modi government over the timing of the law's implementation - four years after it cleared the Parliament. The move is "evidently designed to polarise the elections, especially in West Bengal and Assam", party leader Jairam Ramesh has said.
Trinamool Congress chief and Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has said she doubts the legality of CAA and alleged a conspiracy to "snatch citizenship rights". "BJP leaders say CAA gives you rights. But the moment you apply for citizenship, you become illegal migrants and you will lose your rights. You will lose rights and be taken to detention camps. Please think before you apply," she said.
The Centre has trashed the Opposition's allegations. Stressing that the CAA is not "unconstitutional", Home Minister Amit Shah has accused the Opposition of resorting to the "politics of lies". On the timing of the law's implementation, he said, "BJP made it clear in its 2019 manifesto that it will bring CAA and provide Indian citizenship to refugees (from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan). BJP has a clear agenda and under that promise, the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill was passed in both houses of Parliament in 2019. It got delayed due to Covid."
He has also said that minorities of the country "need not be afraid because CAA has no provision to take back the rights of any citizen".

ALERT: Major update on the CAA front! Its rules could come in next month!! The Citizenship Amendment Act of 2019 (CAA) aimed to amend the Citizenship Act of 1955 by providing citizenship to individuals belonging to Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi, and Christian communities who migrated from Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh, predominantly Muslim-majority states, before December 31st, 2014.
The implementation of the Act sparked extensive protests across various regions, resulting in more than 50 fatalities. Residents of the North-Eastern states expressed concerns over the potential demographic changes caused by accommodating these migrants, while states not affiliated with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) criticized the legislation as discriminatory against Muslims and contradictory to India's secular constitution.
The BJP government had claimed that the bill sought to protect religious minorities that were religiously persecuted in these countries and not against Muslims but against illegal infiltrators. According to latest reports, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) is expected to notify the rules of implementing the rules of CAA before the MCC rules of the Lok Sabha elections are announced!! What do you think? Is CAA trying to divide the country? Or is it genuinely trying to protect religious minorities? Should Muslims be included in the list?? Citizenship Amendment Bill 2019 moved in Upper House
Tumblr media
Moving the Citizenship Amendment Bill 2019 in the Upper House on Wednesday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said that the Bill is a ray of hope for minorities living in a very critical situation in India’s three neighbouring countries – Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh – along with those who came to India due to religious persecution but have not been given citizenship.
“After independence, it was expected that minority citizens living in East and West Pakistan and Afghanistan will be given all the rights and live with respect. Their customs, cultures and religion would be preserved. Their families would be safe,” said Shah.
