The Hives Explode at Kings Theatre
The Hives – Kings Theatre – September 24, 2024
Of all the “the _____” bands of the early aughts rock renaissance, no one was more worthy of an added exclamation point to end their band’s name than the Hives. The Hives! Swedish purveyors of rock rizz in a time before rizz was in the lexicon, a time when the all-out Swedish takeover of American pop music was otherwise a little more subtle and buried in pop-song songwriter credits. The Hives are a band that know no subtlety.
They’ve always been a live-show-first band, so their return to this world is a welcomed one. On Tuesday night they continued their comeback journey off the heels of their latest, The Death of Randy Fitzsimmons, their first album since 2012. But there were no cobwebs for the Hives to shake off last night. In fact, the metaphorical doors were immediately blown open with the opening guitar strums of “Bogus Operandi,” a true-to-form Hives jam that boils over by the time Howlin’ Pelle Almqvist enters the song shrieking, then boils over again and again and again. He looked to the audience and gestured for more applause like he was fanning the flames of a fire, the band donning their custom lightning-bolt-covered black-and-white suits.
“I have been mortally wounded,” Almqvist informed Kings Theatre, letting everyone know he’d suffered an ACL injury, but in a call-and-response way with the crowd more in the style of a Pentecostal preacher. “You may have noticed I am not moving with my normal, cat-like vigor.” It’s always a little difficult to separate fact from myth with the Hives. If true, Almqvist was showing no signs of the injury. “I feel like it would do me a lot of good if you all blew on my knee,” he requested of the fans, instructing them through this twice. (Perhaps this had worked.)
Almqvist is a man who windmills everything: windmill kicks, windmill arms, taking the microphone by the cord and windmilling that. He’s the least-still man in rock and roll, a joy to watch, to listen to banter between songs and to wander amongst the crowd. During a bathroom break I caught bartenders laughing at his line, “You have asked for a lot, but we have given you a lot.” The Hives also employs one of the world’s greatest and hardest-working stagehands, someone dressed in ninja attire as not to overshadow the band, doing his best to keep track up with the miles-long mic cord while the frontman snaked his way through the stage and crowd.
“I hear this is a fast-paced environment where you can only make it if you do your job really quickly,” said Almqvist poking fun at New York City and introducing the fast-paced “Trap Door Solution.” For a show with ever-increasing energy, it was only appropriate to end with band introductions followed by the explosive “Tick Tick Boom.” Allow the Hives to reintroduce themselves, then explode. —Dan Rickershauser | @D4nRicks

Translation: For some reason I thought this would happen earlier in the evening. When I realized it would happen a bit later.. as you know, it takes a lot of teamwork to make a record, everything from getting the record together sonically to getting it out in physical form. I've worked with a lot of people and halfway through this evening, I realized, "Fuck we haven't been mentioned yet, our category hasn't been mentioned! I'm gonna be way too drunk!" So l told Klas - Klas Åhlund, producer of our record, that if we win anything, we should get up here together because it would be difficult to remember everyone that's been part of it. So, some of the people who have helped us: Klas Åhlund, Salem Al Fakir, Vincent Pontare, Max Grahn... and a whole lot of other people. Everyone from Universal, Nicholas, Christian, BMG, Live Nation has been there and helped us so much. Thank you very much everyone who has been involved!

The Finnish government is being pushed to tighten criminal law to combat racism and xenophobia, writes Helsingin Sanomat.
The EU Commission started a formal infringement procedure against Finland two years ago, because in its view, the current criminal code does not fulfill EU obligations. The Commission's stand is that the law on incitement against an ethnic group is too narrowly defined. Discussions between Finland and the Commission are still ongoing.
According to HS, the current government has no concrete plans to propose tougher laws in this regard, and the matter is not part of its legislative agenda. On the contrary, the Finns Party, one of the government coalition partners, has demanded that the definition of incitement be further narrowed.
In August, the government parties issued a joint statement on eradicating racism and promoting equality in Finnish society.
Under the previous government, preliminary plans were drawn up to present parliament with legislation that would have come into effect in mid-2024 making the legal definition of incitement more explicit in criminal law.
Rescheduling elections
Karjalainen is among the papers carrying a report that the party secretaries of the main governing parties would be ready to discuss moving the date of the parliamentary elections from April back to March.
Voting in parliamentary elections was shifted from March to April in 2010. The move was made in the hopes of generating higher turnout on election day.
According to National Coalition Party secretary Kristiina Kokko, the later election date has been found to raise problems in terms of government formation, the appointment of the government and the national budget process.
Finns Party secretary Harri Vuorenpää told the Uutissuomalainen news group that his party is ready to discuss the issue.
The idea has taken off after Minister of Social Security Sanni Grahn-Laasonen (NCP) took up the issue in an online posting in which she argued that moving the elections back to March would give new governments more time to prepare their first budget and would also enable longer consultation periods on planned legislation.
The smaller governing parties, the Swedish People's Party and Christian Democrats, have rejected the idea and the political opposition is also reported to be reluctant to make the change.
Watch your payments
Aamulehti tells readers that they would be wise to keep track of payments they make for healthcare and social services to ensure they don't start paying more than required.
There is an annual payment ceiling of 692 euros, the maximum amount that can be charged annually per person for public social services and healthcare. After that ceiling has been hit, clients in the public sector are entitled to no-charge or reduced-price services.
The paper points out that what is now causing confusion over payments is that various computer systems within the country's welfare counties are not able to communicate with each other.
Pirkanmaa welfare county customer payment manager Mari Kallinen told Aamulehti that each municipality may have up to three different customer information or patient information systems, for example one for dental services and another for all other patient information.
She advised users of public services to keep track of what they have paid and if they suspect that they are being charged after reaching the ceiling to contact the customer services number or email on their invoice.
Pricey supermarket scam
Ilta-Sanomat tells the tale of how the dishonesty of a supermarket customer boosted the price of a salad portion from less than 10 euros to over 345.
On the evening of 9 June, the 59 year-old woman went to the Postitalo K-Supermarket in the centre of Helsinki, boxed up choices from the market's salad bar, weighed them, printed out a price tag, then went back to add more.
She was detained after passing through the checkout line and charged with petty fraud, convicted and fined 336 euros in addition to the full 9.35 euro price of her salad.
The supermarket manager, Mikko Länsiluoto, told IS that the practice is unfortunately common at the self-service salad bar. Starting this past summer all purchases from the bar have been re-weighed at checkout.
Getting colder
At the same time as southern Europe is sweltering in an autumn heatwave, the latest monthly forecast here in Finland is for considerably cooler than average weather.
Iltalehti quotes Foreca Meteorologist Anna Latvala as saying that some of the rain in this week's forecast will come down as sleet or snow, especially in northern parts of the country.
Nighttime snowfall is likely to be seen this week in central regions and the thermometer may dip below freezing at night in the south, as well.

The Hives – Brooklyn Steel – October 30, 2023
The Hives’ sixth studio album — and first in more than a decade — the well-received The Death of Randy Fitzsimmons, dropped this past August and the band’s been out on the road since before it was even released. Back in NYC on Monday night, the Swedish garage-rockers kicked off the North American leg of their world tour with a sold-out show at Brooklyn Steel.
(The Hives play The Sinclair in Cambridge, Mass., tomorrow.)

Offener Brief 25.01.2021
Sehr geehrte Professorin Dr. Auma,
In Verbundenheit,
Studierende und Absolvent_innen der Kindheitswissenschaften (B.A. und M.A.) der Hochschule Magdeburg-Stendal sowie weitere Hochschulangehörige und Unterstützer_innen

'Kids are an unfinished gift and whatever can pinball them in the right direction, I'm in,' Josh Homme said of the museum's new music exhibit. Vickie Connor, The Desert Sun
Josh Homme loves to play, and he finds it's best to give the gift of play as well.
The Queens of the Stone Age frontman was on hand Wednesday evening to dedicate a "musical pathway" at the Children's Discovery Museum in Rancho Mirage. Leading from a picnic area to the traveling exhibit gallery, the outdoor space features three oversized instruments that kids of all ages can play on – a set of tuned drums, chimes and a metallophone, which looks and sounds much like a xylophone.
The exhibit was built thanks to a grant from Homme and his Sweet Stuff Foundation, created to provide support for children’s music programs as well as those within the music community who struggle with health issues and disabilities.
Homme said the decision to help build the pathway was inspired by having children of his own and visiting the museum together.
"I realized mentally that I've been a child the whole time," Homme said. "It's so wonderful to play. That's what I do, I play with my friends. It all donned on me that I'm giving the gift of play, and never letting it go."
The museum unveiled the pathway last year but this week's dedication ceremony featured a plaque to be installed in the future with the inscription, "Make Some Music."
Growing up in the Coachella Valley, Homme said there weren't places like the Children's Discovery Museum or opportunities for young people to play music like there are now.
"Even though there's a lot more to do now than when I was a kid, (the Coachella Valley) is a wonderful place that a lot of people worked their whole lives to come to," he said. "There's some difficult things here, too, and music can keep you from getting caught up in the rough things here," he said.
He also explained the benefits he's received from playing music throughout his life.
"Music is the only thing I understand that is never wrong. You may not like something, but it's not wrong," he said. "It's a safe space to be yourself. You gain confidence because of the expression of being yourself. I also think in this modern world of anxiety and stress of things going on, it's the most positive thing you can do that says, 'Everything is ok, just slow down.' That's a gift I was thankful to get and to give, too."
Off and on since 1997, Homme has led the Desert Sessions, a musical collective series that has included a large cast of musicians like PJ Harvey, Les Claypool of Primus, Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top, and Christian Grahn of The Hives. In October, he released the first new material since 2003, "Volumes 11 & 12."
During the recording sessions, Homme said he left early one night and was surprised when he heard a track the following day, recorded in his absence.
"That's a gift too, because I love to reserve the right to be surprised by things," Homme said. "The one thing I know is: I know nothing. It's just as inspiring to go to bed at 10:30 p.m. and wake up in the morning with this unfinished gift to make your mark on, too. There's a parallel there. Kids are an unfinished gift and whatever can pinball them in the right direction, I'm in."

Marie Taglioni, Comtesse de Voisins (23 April 1804 – 22 April 1884) was a Swedish ballet dancer of the Romantic ballet era, a central figure in the history of European dance. She was one of the most celebrated ballerinas of the romantic ballet, which was cultivated primarily at Her Majesty's Theatre in London, and at the Théâtre de l'Académie Royale de Musique of the Paris Opera Ballet. She is credited with (though not confirmed) being the first ballerina to truly dance en pointe. Taglioni was born in Stockholm, Sweden, to Italian choreographer Filippo Taglioni and Swedish ballet dancer Sophie Karsten, maternal granddaughter of the Swedish opera singer Christoffer Christian Karsten and of the Polish opera singer and actress Sophie Stebnowska. Her brother, Paul (1808–1884), was also a dancer and an influential choreographer; they performed together early in their careers. Before joining the Paris Opéra, Taglioni danced in both Munich and Stuttgart, and at age 23 debuted in another ballet choreographed by her father called "La Sicilien" that jump-started her ballet career. Taglioni rose to fame as a danseuse at the Paris Opéra when her father created the ballet La Sylphide (1832) for her. Designed as a showcase for Taglioni's talent, it was the first ballet where dancing en pointe had an aesthetic rationale and was not merely an acrobatic stunt, often involving ungraceful arm movements and exertions, as had been the approach of dancers in the late 1820s. In 1837 Taglioni left the Ballet of Her Majesty's Theatre to take up a three-year contract in Saint Petersburg with the Imperial Ballet (known today as the Kirov/Mariinsky Ballet). In July 1845, she danced with Lucile Grahn, Carlotta Grisi, and Fanny Cerrito in Jules Perrot's Pas de Quatre, a ballet representing Taglioni's ethereal qualities that was based on Alfred Edward Chalon’s lithographic prints. Pas de Quatre was originally choreographed to be presented to Queen Victoria, who attended the third performance.

The Bryan Awards - The Best of the Last Decade (The 2010s)
With only two weeks left in the decade, I took a thorough look back at the last ten Bryan Awards (with the last nine of them being recorded as annual podcasts for WCRS FM), and picked the Best of the Best since the 2010 Bryan Awards (or programs that aired since January 1, 2010, and airing up until the cut-off for this September’s Bryan Awards, which was May 31, which would eliminate the likes of Mrs. Fletcher, Season 2 of Big Little Lies, plus newbies like On Becoming A God in Central Florida, Perfect Harmony, the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup, and this week’s A Christmas Carol).
Here are the Guidelines Chosen for both this and the Silver Garbage Awards Worst of the Decade: - Eligibility Period is January 1, 2010 to May 31, 2019. - Glee is being entered for New Series of the Decade, because it won the 2010 Bryan Award in that race, despite it debuted in 2009. - Younger Acting will be merged through the genres: Daytime, Comedy, Drama, and Limited Series. And if an actor turned 26 doesn't really matter, as long as 50% of their nominations were before they were 26. - Big Little Lies (Season 1), Orange Is the New Black, and Downton Abbey are Dramas. Shameless is a Comedy. True Detective is a Longform, as is American Horror Story, and ALL seasons will be lumped into one for Anthology Stories. - Sherlock and Sharknado are being entered for ALL of their movies, ditto for Black Mirror episodes, in the Longform races. - There will be separate Lead and Supporting Acting races for Comedy and Drama Bryan Awards, but NOT for Silver Garbage. Apologies for the Length of this Post, but without further ado...
