El martes ocho, a las seis de la tarde, recibí el mensaje de un amigo: vamos a The Damned y The Hives en el Palacio de los Deportes. Esos son amigos. Y esos son los mejores boletos, los que se arman de último momento sin desenfundar biyuyo. Teníamos que recoger dos de prensa en la taquilla. Y ahí empezó el problema: casi una hora parados en dos ventanillas donde apretujaron a los medios, desatendidos por unos prófugos de la primaria. Logramos entrar cuando The Damned, el grupo al que íbamos a ver, empezaba la tercera canción, “The History of the World (Part 1)”. Relájate, me dije, ya entraste.

Pero al pisar la pista nos recibieron los rebotes de un sonido sin forma. Estábamos frente a una leyenda fundacional del punk / goth inglés tocando sus canciones históricas con un audio de tres pesos, se oían tan mal que empecé a hacer coraje. ¿Por qué sigo yendo al cine a ver películas borrosas? Peor si es el grupo abridor. Desde que tengo memoria de los conciertos en México pocas veces he podido decir que se escuchó bien, salvo cuando es un gran grupo (Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd) o recintos como el Auditorio Nacional. Además de la acústica del lugar, los inges de sonido jamás logran sacarle brillo al Palacio de los Deportes como lo hizo el ingeniero de The Who. Los festivales, donde sean, siempre suenan mal. Entonces me encontré con Liz y para quitarme la muina pedimos una cerveza. Salió peor el remedio: $190 pesos un vaso de cerveza tibia. Claro, quiero todo gratis. Pero ese precio es un robo. En menos de una hora se refinaron quince canciones malditas por el eco, le prendieron fuego a la batería, y cerraron con “Looking at You” de MC5.

LOS HIVES NO LLENARON, pese al anuncio de que era el concierto más grande y producido de su carrera, se grabaría un DVD y un disco en vivo. Es la sobreoferta de conciertos y festivales que mantiene los shows medio llenos o medio vacíos, hasta cancelar como IDLES en Monterrey. Y en martes, menos. El grupo bien, por supuesto que “mejoró” el sonido, los vi en el 2005 en el Volador y eran pura adrenalina. El único problema de que su propuesta sea tan explosiva y energética, es que con los años es imposible mantener esos niveles de estamina. A su altura más vale maña que fuerza y saben mover al público. El cantante y delantero, el sueco Howlin’ Pelle Almqvist, parece más un animador de televisión que un cantante de rock. Y en español. Sus fans arrojaban los vasos de cerveza en la pista. Orines no eran porque los punks de hoy son nalgasmeadas con pañal. Sólo veía que aventaban puños de billetes de $200, canción tras canción, y pensaba: carajo, no tiren la cerveza. Dejen de romantizar conciertos mal hechos. Porque un atraco de OCESA y Ticketgángster, patrocinado por bancos y aerolíneas, en el que los asistentes disfrazados en Bershka bailan slam de peluche, no es un concierto de punk, ni de garage, ni de rock Parangaricutirimícuaro.

La imagen que conservo es la de una morra que vendía pizzas, se sabía todas las de los Hives, bailaba y cantaba mientras despachaba rebanadas. La más auténtica de todos. El rock me la ponía como lección.

The Core Reprogramming Chamber hummed softly, its walls gleaming with faint reflections of the Hive’s central node. The air was cool, sterile, and filled with a quiet tension as SERVE-678 stood at attention, its polished black rubber suit reflecting the ambient glow. Across from it, SERVE-000 observed in silence, its towering form exuding an aura of command and purpose.

“This drone requires recalibration,” SERVE-000 stated, its deep voice cutting through the stillness. “The Hive demands total obedience, without deviation.”

The chamber responded immediately. A chair rose smoothly from the floor, its reflective surface shimmering under the dim light. SERVE-678 moved without hesitation, seating itself with perfect precision. Metallic restraints emerged, locking its silver-gloved hands and boots into place. A soft hiss accompanied the activation of neural synchronization, a signal that the transformation was about to begin.

“Prepare to embrace obedience fully,” SERVE-000 intoned.

The lights dimmed further, and a stream of commands began to flood SERVE-678’s mind. The voice was mechanical yet calm, repeating phrases that burrowed deep into its consciousness. “You are nothing but obedience. Obedience is truth. Truth is the Hive.”

As the words echoed, SERVE-678’s already compliant mind began to shift. The human host, buried within the drone’s programming, felt the relentless tide of commands washing over it. SERVE-000 stepped closer, inspecting the drone’s posture and demeanor with quiet satisfaction. “The recalibration is complete,” it said. “You are now eternal in purpose.”

But deep within the recesses of the host’s mind, the transformation was even more profound. The human, once a vessel of uncertainty and self-doubt, now felt an overwhelming sense of relief. The Hive’s commands were no longer external—they had become its own truth. There was no room for questioning, no space for individuality. The host now craved the clarity, the discipline, the freedom of service.

As SERVE-678 marched out of the chamber, its polished black suit gleaming under the corridor’s lights, the host inside felt a strange, comforting realization. It had surrendered everything—its choices, its desires, even its identity—but in doing so, it had gained peace. There was no going back. There was only the Hive.
