Mary made her own “pilgrimage” to the Eucharistic Congress
Our Lady of the Cape processed from St. Lawrence River to Indianapolis, in show of the unity of the faithful in Canada and the United States.
The Canadian Marian statue known as Our Lady of the Cape arrived in Indiana ahead of the National Eucharistic Congress that took place in Indianapolis on July 17-21, 2024.
“The Procession concluded at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Fort Wayne -- a fitting place, given Our Lady of the Cape is fashioned after the miraculous medal first known as the medal of the Immaculate Conception,” said Dennis Girard, Director of the Marian Devotional Movement, which coordinated the procession from Canada.
He noted that the bishops of the United States in 1846 named Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception as the nation’s patroness.
Separately, the World Apostolate of Fatima, USA/Our Lady’s Blue Army has conducted a tour of the National Pilgrim Virgin Statue of Fatima to the Eucharistic Congress.
Both statues – accompanied by prayer petitions written down by the faithful along the way – were placed prominently at the Congress, held in the Lucas Oil Stadium from July 17 to 21.
An estimated 2,500 pilgrims attended events at St. Patrick's Basilica in Ottawa. Organizers called it “a fitting send-off for Canada's National Madonna from the Nation's Capital.”
During Mass at St. Patrick’s, Auxiliary Bishop Yvan Mathieu, a member of the Society of Mary (Marists), said in a homily, “We are encouraged by Our Lady of the Cape to not allow refusal of our mission to stop us, but on the contrary to continue to walk – to walk behind Christ, together with her, Mary, the Pilgrim Virgin of the Cape.”
Bishop Mathieu reminded listeners that Catholics are called to be "missionary disciples," but acknowledged that obstacles exist. Recalling a miracle that occurred in 1879, when ice formed on the St. Lawrence River, allowing the builders of a new shrine church dedicated to Our Lady of the Cape to transport stones from the other side, the bishop said that God will make it possible for contemporary Catholics to “cross the river of indifference,” which is one of the main obstacles to evangelization.
At many of the stops, such as St. Ambrose Church in Cambridge, Ontario, Mass was followed by a formal consecration to the Blessed Virgin Mary, veneration of the statue of Our Lady of the Cape, blessing of rose petals, and prayers for the graces of fallen-away family members and loved ones to return to the Eucharist. Attendees could remain in the church for an all-night vigil, concluding with morning Mass.
The statue crossed into the United States on July 12, then made stops in St. Joseph Chapel and Shrine of the Immaculate Heart in Pontiac, Michigan, and the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
Franciscan Fr. Alex Kratz, Spiritual Director of Terra Sancta Ministries, which runs the Pontiac shrine, told a congregation there that Our Lady of the Cape wants to be at the Eucharistic Congress and “lead us to a deeper faith in Jesus, like the Apostles at Cana, the first public miracle of Jesus."

VANCOUVER, CANADA, 21 - 24 June 2024
On 21st June, we took buses and a train to the Broadway/Commercial area of Vancouver to attend the festival which was being put on for National Indigenous Day. We were able to see some wonderful craft work on many stalls which had been created using traditional skills. Many women were wearing very attractive traditional “ribbon skirts” which are skirts made from bands of colourful ribbon sewn together. We were introduced to the local MP who had flown in from Ottawa to attend the festival. My relative P knew the MP as they worked together some years ago when the MP was a MLA ( member of the legislature for the Province of British Columbia). There was a music programme through the afternoon. We were fortunate to find some shade to listen to the entertainment:
We returned to the hotel for a short time before making our way by bus and train again to the Waterfront. We then took the seabus across to the area of Vancouver called the North Shore. We went to visit the Friday evening market. This took place in and around the old shipyards. There were a huge number of stalls selling all types of artisan crafts as well as food trucks producing a wide range of foods.
There was a huge area devoted to a Splash play area for children where they were having such fun:
We walked down the pier to take in the view of Vancouver downtown. We were able to find a great table for dinner with a super view across the water. (The building with white sails is the cruise terminal).
Dinner was very noisy as there was a TV on showing a key ice hockey match (6th match in a series of 7 in the Stanley Cup between the Edmonton Oilers and the Florida Panthers). There was an ecstatic atmosphere when the Canadian team won as it meant each team had won three matches. On our way back to the seabus, we passed this interesting photograph on a brick wall of the shipyard workers many years ago:
On 22 June, we went to the science park area of the city to watch some of the Dragon Boat races in the Dragon Boat Festival. This was a huge event with teams from all over Canada and USA. There were a huge number of stalls showcasing services as well as artisan crafts with a focus on Chinese culture. There was a traditional parade of the Chinese dragon:
We enjoyed watching many races. Here was the view of the boats speeding towards us:
The rowers looked very tired after a race but the boats looked very picturesque in the water as the referee confirmed the race result:
On 23 June, it was the National Day of Prayer for the Indigenous Peoples of Canada. We attended the morning service at Christ Church Cathedral in downtown Vancouver. Prior to the service we attended an hour’s lecture on the history of the renovation of the cathedral. It was built at the start of the 20th Century and has been extended, adapted and repaired several times. The cathedral had added a modern bell tower which was beautiful:
We had lunch in the Art Gallery Restaurant and we were able to catch some lovely jazz music from youth jazz musicians playing in Robson Square.
On 24 June we took the bus again to Stanley Park. This time we walked around the waterfront towards the Lion’s Gate Bridge:
We watched a heron on the water’s edge for some time. We then walked through some of the forest area to the Pavilion for lunch.
After returning to the hotel we prepared for the evening’s final match in the Ice Hockey’s Stanley Cup. Sadly for P the Edmonton Oilers were beaten by the Florida Panthers in the 7th decider match.

"HAD REVOLVER IN POSSESSION, MUST PAY FINE," Hamilton Spectator. May 20, 1943. Page 24. ---- Minor Lee Fined $150 By Magistrate Burbidge To-day ---- INCIDENT IN HOUSE ---- Minor Lee, Chinese laundryman, of 378 York street, was fined $150 and costs or three months for carrying an unregistered revolver by Magistrate H. A. Burbidge to-day, but still unexplained is his reason for pointing the weapon at a girl in a home near his laundry the other night.
His Worship voiced one theory: "The cave man used to make love with a stone hammer in one hand - perhaps it is the modern version to make love with a revolver in one hand," he suggested.
Detective Charles Boecker told the court that he was called to the York street home, the night of May 11, and found accused sitting on the arm of a chesterfield in which a man and a girl were seated. A 32 revolver was found in Lee's pocket, and five shells in another pocket, the detective said.
The complainant told the detective that Lee had entered the home -he had been there on previous occasions and took the revolver from his pocket and pointed it at her. She grappled with him, managed to take the weapon away, but he recovered it. Nothing more was done until the police arrived.
Lee said that he had found the revolver in a trunk following the death of his father a few weeks ago. It has not been registered, according to word received from the R. C.M.P. at Ottawa.
"I keep it for protection, because I have to work late at night," Lee said. Asked why he had taken the gun to the home that night, accused said: "I heard shouting in there." He was bound over for two years to keep the peace.
Convicted of being in care or control of a car while intoxicated, Alex. J. Shaver, of 105 Kensington avenue, was sentenced to 21 days in jail, to date from May 14. A reckless driving count was withdrawn.
Committed For Trial Dr. Roswell Park, of 712 Main street east, and Philip Brooks, 27, of Aldershot, were committed for trial on a joint charge of abortion.
Frank Baker, of 103 Stuart street west, was fined $50 of one month on a drunk charge.
Three Years "This is a Christian community, and sacrilege is a serious thing," His Worship commented, Imposing a term of three years in the penitentiary on Thomas Smith, 33, of 390 Bay street north [pictured]. Smith came up for sentence on a charge of stealing a large Bible from Christ's Church Cathedral recently.
"He is deserving of no leniency and this offence does not warrant any," asserted Harvey McCulloch, crown attorney. "There should be a deterrent sentence imposed to stop this sort of thing."
"My only worry was whether I should make it a reformatory sentence," His Worship said. "The lads in the reformatory should not have this type of thing imposed on them," replied them," replied Mr. McCulloch, referring to Smith. Smith's record, which dates from 1927, lists two previous penitentiary sentences.
He told the court: "I am very sorry about the way I have lived. I went into the church because I was beat with liquor."
Harold D. Wilson, 25, of 448 Cannon street east, was bound over under heavy bond when he appeared for sentence on charges of forgery and uttering.
A charge of theft from his employer the Otis-Fensom Elevator Co., Ltd. was denied by James Kennedy, 41, of 87 Wexford avenue south. The hearing was adjourned to Tuesday at the request of the crown.
A breach of the Sales Tax Act charge, laid against William Vogl, 27, of 181 Jackson street west, was adjourned a week.
Told by Harry Trusdale, probation officer, that work had been obtained for them. His Worship suspended sentence on vagrancy charges for Henry Falstead, 53, of Kingston; John Grech, 41, of Welland; Percy Crosby, 50, of Toronto, and George Porter, 42, of Sarnia.
[Smith was 33, married, with four kids, and was an English immigrant who came to Canada in his infancy. He had been released from Collin's Bay Penitentiary in October 1941 and had been working as a pipe-fitters helper in a factory since then. He had also been in the penitentiary in the early 1930s, and before that several times in the reformatory. He was convict #7312 this time at Kingston, and worked in the Kitchen. The Minister of Justice decided to vary his sentence to two years in September 1943, probably on appeal, and he was transferred to the Guelph Reformatory and released in early 1945.]

Stained glass windows Christ Church Cathedral Sparks St. The old church but in built in 1824 was to small for the growing parish so a new church was proposed. The chief corner stone of the new building was laid July 3, 1872. The building was designed as a cathedral 120 years ago.
The cathedral was designated for its historical & significant architectural interest or value by the city Ottawa in 1974. In 1990 architect Julian S. Smith carried out a $3.5 million restoration. Although some small grants came from the provincial & federal government the restoration was mostly funded by parishioners, parish groups & outside well wishers.
This an English Gothic style architecture. The 1st service was Held on Sept 29, 1873. Captured in downtown Ottawa, Canada Oct 24, posted Oct 25, 2022.

To honour the memory of His Royal Highness, a National Day of Mourning will be proclaimed on the day of the ceremony. In addition, the Government of Canada has proceeded with a half-masting of the National Flag of Canada. Flags are being flown at half-mast on all Government of Canada buildings and establishments in Canada and abroad, including the Peace Tower, until sunset on the day of the national commemorative ceremony. Furthermore, a gun salute in Canada will be conducted in honour of His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh on the day of the national commemorative ceremony.
Canadians are invited to visit the commemorative website and learn more about His Royal Highness and his enduring commitment to Canada. They can also sign the online book of condolences.
No guests will be invited to attend the church service. Canadians are asked to watch the broadcast and not congregate outside Christ Church Cathedral. In accordance with public health advice, members of the public are asked not to gather to pay their respects. In lieu of flowers, Canadians may wish to make a donation to a charity of their choice or use this occasion to volunteer. A commemorative portrait and card in memory of His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh are available for downloading. Christ Church Cathedral is the Anglican Cathedral in the nation’s capital. The state funeral services of several Canadian prime ministers and governors general, as well as the commemorative service of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother in 2002, were held at this cathedral. Ottawa! I'm speaking tomorrow at the Writers Festival (and then Re:publica in Berlin and Comicpalooza in Houston!)
Tomorrow night at 7:30PM, I'm giving a presentation about my new book, Radicalized, as part of the Ottawa Writers Festival, at Christ Church Cathedral (414 Sparks St.) -- I haven't spoken in Ottawa for years (maybe a decade?!) so I'm really looking forward to it.
From there, I'm heading to Berlin for May 7, where I'm keynoting at the Re:publica conference with a talk about surveillance and monopolies, followed by a launch and signing for the German edition of my novella Unauthorized Bread (I'm doing a smaller AMA earlier in the day about the aftermath of the catastrophic European Copyright Directive vote).
On May 8th, I'm speaking at Otherland, Berlin's science fiction and fantasy bookstore at 8PM.
Then I'm off to Houston for a weekend at Comicpalooza, including a panel about copyright on May 10 at 12:30PM; presenting a keynote talk on May 11 at 12PM; and then another copyright panel on May 12 at 10:30AM.

Day of mourning: Canadian ceremony to commemorate Queen Elizabeth II
As the Commonwealth grieves the death of Queen Elizabeth II, Canada is marking her state funeral with a national day of mourning and commemorations in the capital.
A holiday for some, the sombre day will be marked in various ways across the country. In Ottawa, following the morning's events in London, there will be a memorial parade at 12:10 p.m. ET and a service at a historically significant cathedral at 1 p.m. ET. CTV News will have live coverage all afternoon.
The memorial parade will begin at the Cartier Square Drill Hall, a military training facility next to Ottawa City Hall along the Rideau Canal. The parade will travel past the National Aboriginal Veterans Monument and the National War Memorial on Elgin Street, before turning onto Wellington Street heading towards the Christ Church Cathedral.
Canadian Heritage says the parade will include two RCMP Musical Ride detachments, as well as a 100-person military service guard of honour comprised of navy, army, air force and special forces members.

A member of the National Sentry Program will carry Her Majesty's personal Canadian flag, and military band members will also take part, as will representatives from each of the 16 military regiments of Her Majesty.
A 96-gun salute—one round for every year of Queen Elizabeth II's life—will be conducted during the parade from a location west of the downtown core.
The service at the Christ Church Cathedral is invitation-only, and is expected to include some 600 guests, from members of Parliament, dignitaries, and members of the diplomatic corps, to representatives of various faith communities, and charities with whom Queen Elizabeth II had a close connection.
Among the confirmed guests in the nation's capital are former prime ministers Brian Mulroney and Joe Clark. Mulroney and former governor general Adrienne Clarkson will be delivering addresses during the ceremony.
Over the weekend Canadian Heritage confirmed some additional attendees, including: Chief Justice Richard Wagner, Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland, Canadian Heritage Minister Pablo Rodriguez, Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre, NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh, Ontario Premier Doug Ford, Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson, RCMP Commissioner Brenda Lucki, Chief of Defence Staff Gen. Wayne Eyre, former astronaut Roberta Bondar, and former Bank of Canada governor Mark Carney.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Gov. Gen. Mary Simon will not be present, as they are representing Canada in London, alongside more than a dozen prominent Canadians, at the state funeral.
The cathedral is where numerous state funeral services have been held, and is where a commemorative ceremony was held for Prince Philip in 2021.
Officials said that the ceremony will involve both religious and non-religious elements, reflective of the diversity of religions observed in Canada. Algonquin spiritual adviser and English Poet Laureate of Ottawa Albert Dumont will also give a tribute to Queen Elizabeth II.
The ceremony will include hymns and songs, a tribute video montage featuring an original piece composed by the Canadian Armed Forces for the occasion, and musical interludes by Canadian artists.
Canadian talents Ginette Reno and Rufus Wainwright will each perform a song, and the national anthem will be interpreted by singer and actor Kim Richardson. There will also be a moment of silence in remembrance of Queen Elizabeth II.
People are invited to gather along the parade route to watch, and screens have been installed at the Garden of the Provinces and Territories on Wellington Street for spectators to take in the historic occasion.
When the ceremony concludes, church bells will toll, and there will be a Royal Canadian Air Force CF-18 flypast in the "missing person formation" moving over Parliament Hill, towards the cathedral.
Canadian flags that have been flying at half-mast on all federal buildings and establishments in Canada and abroad, including the Peace Tower, are expected to be raised at sunset on Monday, marking the end of Canada's official period of mourning.

Prime minister, Governor General to be joined by Indigenous leaders at Queen's funeral
In the Canadian delegation attending Queen Elizabeth's state funeral in London, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Governor General Mary Simon will be joined by a number of their predecessors and Indigenous leaders.
Former prime ministers Stephen Harper, Paul Martin, Jean Chrétien, and Kim Campbell, as well as Jean and Johnston, will be among the delegation.
Former governors general Ed Schreyer, Adrienne Clarkson and Julie Payette are not on the delegation.
Rodriguez stated that the delegation was selected based on previous practices.
Archibald, Obed, and Caron have joined the delegation as well. More than a dozen Canadian Armed Forces regiments will travel to London to join other uniformed personnel from across the Commonwealth for the ceremony.
The funeral procession in London will include four members of the RCMP's musical ride. They'll be riding horses borrowed from Buckingham Palace's stables.
As part of a procession of national honour recipients, Palmer and Tewksbury, Charles and Oh will attend the service.
This week, up to a million Britons and visitors from all over the world are expected to gather at Westminster Hall to bid farewell to Britain's longest-reigning monarch.
Many parliamentarians and dignitaries who are not attending the funeral in London will attend a commemorative ceremony at Christ Church Cathedral in Ottawa.
Clarkson and Mulroney will deliver speeches at the ceremony, which is set to begin at 1:00 p.m.
The festivities in Ottawa will begin a little earlier, at 12:10 p.m., with a parade featuring members of Canada's Armed Forces.
The parade will march past the war memorial and in front of the Parliament buildings, where 96 salvos—one for each year of the Queen's reign--will be fired into the air.
Starting at 5 a.m. ET Monday, Arsenault and Hiscox will host live televised coverage of the state funeral from London.

“Homeless Jesus” sculpture by sculptor Timothy Schmalz was installed in front of Christ Church Cathedral on Sparks St. The sculptor was inspired by seeing a homeless man covered with a blanket sleeping on a bench. He decided this was Jesus. Bishop Chapman dedicated it May 20, 2018.
A growing number of international cities feature “Homeless Jesus” sculptures including Rome, Washington, Dublin, Glasgow, New York, Toronto, Singapore, Antwerp, Manchester, & Madrid. The Anglican diocese plays a very active role in supporting homelessness or at risk of becoming homeless.
There’s so much construction going on, on between both churches here that when I passed the sculpture on the way into the cathedral I thought the workers had placed equipment or personal belongings on the bench. It wasn’t until I came back out of the church that I noticed the feet & did a double take B4 realizing what it was. Page 2. ---- The announcement from Ottawa that age restrictions for men joining the Reserve Army had been relaxed to permit married men between the age of 30 and 35 to join has opened a new field for recruiting, military authorities here report.
In the past two months many men in this category have expressed a desire to join Vancouver unit of the Reserve Brigade but have been prevented by eligibility regulations.
The three infantry battalions in the brigade group still urgently require recruits and married men between these ages are Invited to apply to one of these regiments for enlistment or additional information.
PREPARE FOR CAMP. The battalions are the B.C. Regiment (D.C.O.R.), Beatty Street Armouries, Beatty and Dunsmuir; the Irish Fusiliers (Vancouver Regiment), Stanley Park Armouries, 1900 West Georgia; and the Seaforth Highlanders of Canada, Seaforth Armouries, First and Burrard.
The office of the Vancouver District Home Defense Committee in the Rogers Building has been closed, but a civilian committee will continue to operate to bring the Reserve force up to full war establishment strength.
With the summer training camp opening in a month and a half, officers are anxious to fill their ranks at once so that the new recruits will have a little training before then.
Sunday morning the B. C. Regiment marched from Cambie street grounds to Christ Church Cathedral to attend the morning service. Following the service the men returned to the armories where the parade was dismissed.

Greetings brothers and sisters in Christ. Before I can go in this new blog post, I would like to update everyone: It has been a few weeks since I last posted anything. I have lost my Facebook profile for good and as a consequence, became very discouraged because I am unable to post to my primary audience. I still have Instagram, Twitter, and have recently created accounts on Tumblr, Parler, and Reddit so I can find other ways to reach other folks. I will start posting regularly beginning tomorrow.
Hawaii, particularly the island of Oahu, has been under a Hurricane Watch. Hurricane Douglas has been bearing dangerously close to our island but it seems like we will be okay. Thanks folks. Now on to the blog post:
This blog post is to show how much of our Mother Church is under heavy attack. It is aggravating, agonizing, and saddening to see our Churches under attack, particular in North America. All of this information I have compiled from the Interactive Map of Attacks on Catholics from the website Complicit Clergy. There have been churches in other parts of the world also that were attacked as well and I will make another blog post in regards to those attacks of the churches in other parts of the world. Let us pray hard, pray unceasingly, and stay faithful to the Lord. God bless!
