The Forbidden Marriage
Finished watching this romcom set in the Joseon Era. It is light in the violence and is less about politics, and more about relationships which is nice and different when it comes to historical dramas. I liked the characters and their interactions, sweet, fun and light. Unlike many historical dramas, this one provides a happy ending to protagonists and secondary characters.
I liked it and I'm planning to read the webtoon it is based on.

On Moon’s Relationships with the Choi Family
Excerpts from The Choi Family Entanglements, recently updated on May 13, 2023
▲ Pictured: These are the only known photos of Choi Seon-gil (also written as Sun-kil Choi) and Sun Myung Moon together. They were taken around early 1955 by Eu Hyo-min, probably in Seoul. He explained that Choi had challenged her husband when she caught him having sex with two women.
From a Japanese article: “It is complicated. This is the part that has been erased from the history of the Unification Church.
Sun Myung Moon’s first wife was Choi Seon-gil LINK
She was the niece of Choi Seong-mo (see obituary below)
Choi Seon-gil’s uncle was Choi Seong-mo
He was the brother of Choi Seon-gil’s father.
Choi Seong-mo’s wife was Lee Duk-sam. [He married Lee when he was 29. Lee left Choi to follow Sun Myung Moon.]
Choi Seong-mo’s eldest daughter: Choi Soon-shil [She arrested for group sex in Moon’s church in July 1955.] LINK
Choi Seong-mo’s second daughter: Choi Soon-wha LINK [She is the mother of Sam Park, born in 1966, fathered by Sun Myung Moon.]
Choi Seong-mo’s eldest son: Choi Soon-yeong LINK [He inherited the chaebol/business]
Choi Seong-mo’s second son: Choi Soon-kwang
Choi Seong-mo’s third son: Choi Soon-kil
I can understand the feelings of Mr. Choi Seong-mo, who was the husband of Mrs. Lee Duk-sam. He pushed the police to investigate Teacher Moon, and he wanted to beat the Unification Church. At first I thought Mr. Choi Seong-mo hated Teacher Moon because Moon married Choi Seon-gil, who was Mr. Choi’s niece. But apparently he was indignant about the relationship between his wife and Teacher Moon. That is why he called Teacher Moon ‘the devil’.
It’s become a mess.”
[One of the sons, either Soon-kwang or Soon-kil, was active against Sun Myung Moon, but was heavily persecuted by the organization.]
▲ Pictured: Oh Yeong-choon is standing on the right, next to Hak Ja Han and her mother Hong Soon-ae. Oh was involved in the selection of Hak Jan Han as the wife of Sun Myung Moon. This photograph was taken at around the time of that selection. Oh raised money to get Moon out of jail in 1955, following the Ewha Womans University sex scandal. LINK
Oh Yeong-choon witnessed to Lee Duk-sam in Busan. After Lee Duk-sam joined, she brought her two daughters, Choi Soon-shil and Choi Soon-wha, into the UC. Choi Soon-yeong who was younger resisted recuitment, even though he was under pressure from his mother to join. Moon took the daughters to Seoul to be with him in the fall of 1953. It has been reported that he “restored” the two of them in a small hotel near the Seoul train station. Soon-shil went to Yonsei University and Soon-wha to Ewha Womans University. In 1964 Soon-wha traveled to Washington, DC, to go to university there. She wanted to get away from Moon. In 1965, during his first world tour, Moon spent three months in DC having sex with Soon-wha, aka Annie. He did not leave the US until he knew she was pregnant. Sam Park was born on January 28, 1966.
▲ Pictured: Sam Park is sitting next to Hak Ja Han. Sam was hidden in Bo Hi Pak’s family and did not discover who his biological parents were until he was 12 or 13.

“The organization of the Unification Church is so systematic that one thinks of communists.” – Professor Choi
▲ The Seoul headquarters church was purchased in 1955
Professor Choi Syn-deok joined the Unification Church in 1954.
Transactions of the Royal Asiatic Society, Korea Branch No. 43 (1967)
The author Choi Syn-deok (Ch’oe Sin-dok, 崔信德 1921-2016) was an Associate Professor of Sociology at Ewha Woman’s University in Seoul. She received her undergraduate education in Korea at Ewha and did graduate work in social science at the University of Chicago where she received an M.A. degree in 1957. After her return she served as Advisor in the Education Division of USOM, and in 1961 accepted an assistant professorship at Tanguk University. In 1963 she joined the faculty of Ewha University. Professor Choi has written books and reports on Korean-American subjects and on the dating attitudes of Korean college students. She is now engaged in an anthropological study of Korean village life. She was once an active member of the Tong-il [Unification] church, [she had joined in 1954] and was closely associated with Moon Sun-myung.
[She was married in 1942 and had four children before the Korean War. Her husband was Dr. Soo Jang Joo, M.D. She lost her husband when he was taken captive by the North Korean Army in 1950. Dr. Douglas DM Joo, former president of The Washington Times, is her son.]

...
II. Organization of the Church
The organization of the Tong-il [Unification] church is so systematic that one thinks of communists. They pose as “heavenly communists.” Their headquarters is located in Seoul. Mr. Eu Hyo-won is the executive head of the Holy Spirit Association. Under his leadership is: (1) The administrative section, which deals with general affairs, cultural affairs, rural districts, and business affairs; (2) the student section, which includes departments for middle school students, high school students, young children, and Sunday school students; and the national network. There are provincial heads, “Kun” or district heads, “Myon” or sub-district heads, “Li” or village heads, and individual evangelists. Thus the Tong-il faith has been spread throughout the country to every small village.
Seoul is on the provincial level, and its organization is as follows: it consists of three districts. The first district is the Youth Division, the second district is the Men’s Division, and the third district is the Women’s Division. The Youth Division in turn is subdivided into two areas, a girls, division and a boys, division. Then each sub-division is divided into three groups. For the boys, [page 105] Seoul National University students take the lead, and for the girls Ewha University students take the lead. The second and the third districts are divided into three areas respectively, and each of these areas is subdivided into three groups. One group consists of about twelve persons. One area consists of 36 persons and one district consists of 108.
Special emphasis is put on youth in the Tong-il [Unification] Church. They don’t expect much from those above forty. Old people over forty, they think, should regard themselves as the sacrifices offered on the altar to bring the kingdom of heaven on earth through Mr. Moon.
There is a communication system formed between the members so that they can act immediately in matters which concern them all, such as passing on information, acting on Moon’s direction or responding to some urgent notice by the church. Each group in its respective district has its own weekly meeting, and has many activities besides studying their principles.
Training Meetings for Orientation
They have several peculiar practices of their own: In order to provide many evangelists for the church, they frequently hold training meetings. A national meeting is usually held for forty days. During this period they have the participants master their principles and do many drills. They lodge them together for that period, as in the military service, so that they can learn to endure all the difficulties they will have to face, mentally as well as physically, while doing their evangelistic work.
Evangelistic Activity. They set aside special evangelistic periods for organized proselytizing, twice a year. The first term is in the summer for forty days from July 20 to the end of August, and the other is in the winter for forty days from December to the end of January. Nearly all members of the Seoul church who can read the Korean alphabet participate in this activity. Their destinations are settled by drawing lots. All the costs for this evangelistic work are borne by the participants, individually. [page106] When they go out they teach the children the Korean alphabet and mathematics as well as their church principles. They work hard with the farmers and help the villagers in any way they can. Because they are not a financial drain on the farmers, but help them with sincerity, many of them are welcomed by the rural administrators as well as by the people. Also, there are some over-seer preachers who go around to advise and assist the evangelists in their work. They associate with the village administrators, such as Yi-chang, and the head of the police station, winning their cooperation. The Tong-il Church is growing more rapidly in the rural areas than in Seoul.
The Church Guard. The Tong-il Church where Moon lives is guarded by two believers every night. They do not sleep. Each of the three districts takes the responsibility of guarding the church for ten days each. The reason for the guard, so they are taught, is to defend this sacred Church from Satan who already controls the rest of the world, and who, liking darkness, is more likely to come at night.

The Swindlers
I love this kind of stories where nothing is what it seems. Where people play with the mind of other characters and the audience. We are fooled, amazed and mind blown - this is the magic of team work!
In 2008 Jang scammed a large number of people and rang away with the help of influential people in government and politics.
8 years later, a prosecutor and a swindler are after him, teaming up to achieve their common goal - kill Jang.
But who is who? And who are involved in this corruption scheme?
I won’t say more so I don’t spoil it for people.
But this is another must see kind-of-movie!

I don’t know how to introduce this web drama, since it would completely spoil my review. Let’s just say that the cast is quite nice... *coughing heavily* Kim Young-Kwang...Lee Ji-Hoon... Shin Jae-Ha... Kwon Yuri...
Go Ho’s Starry Night (Gogh, the Starry Night) is a romantic comedy that follows the life of Go-Ho, an employee at an advertising company. She’s a part of the team A, which means that her manager is the “mad man”, Tae-Ho. One day, she will receive the news that she’s transferred to the team B under a new manager that is none other than her ex-boyfriend, Ji-Hoon.
At the end of the characters’ paragraph there’s a really small spoiler. If you don’t want to read it, just skip the end. As always, except that, I tried to keep the review with the less spoiler possible, but please stay careful.
The plot is pretty usual because of the situation in which the female lead is put, but it was handled in a quite nice way with Go Ho’s articles about the people around her. Her articles were not too important in the story, but they were really useful to make the story progresses at some time and allows the viewer to understand the characters. The story line is quite cliché and predictable, but I don’t care about that, it’s a good story that is the cutest thing ever and truly deserves a watch. The progression of the plot is nicely made so there isn’t too much lengths in the story, since it’s a really short drama (4 episodes of 1 hour or 20 episodes of around 20 minutes), even though there’s a lot of frequent flashbacks that I didn’t all find useful. Also, since I’m talking about what I less liked in the story, I’ll just touch a word about the fact that it treats really lightly about a really important subject. I mean, sexual harassment at work was trivialize and, even if manager Kang took actions, I felt as if the subject wasn’t treated the right way. These were probably the main problems I found in the story line. I mean, except that, it’s really a nice story that is really funny and realistic. Even if the story is a bit cliché, it’s really heartwarming and, as a viewer, I was pleased with the progression and the ending, since I truly cheered for the main couple, but I can understand why some might not like the drama, since Tae-Ho isn’t presented under the best light at the start of the drama and stays pretty much the same through the drama.
For the characters, I thought that, even though they were really cliché at start, they are quite well-made. I mean, sure, I saw a thousand of female lead that are confronted to the same situation, but I thought Go-Ho greatly handled the situation by not acting so weak and trying to get back with her ex-boyfriend. I also felt that she had more depth than simply being in a state of self-pity due the horrible way in which Ji-Hoon broke up with her. But, even if I try to make her appear under a good light, I can’t keep myself from saying that she’s really cliché. The male lead, too, is pretty cliché and usual, but, at least, I was pleased that he wasn’t simply an abusive male lead that treated badly the female lead because he hated her. I truly cheered for him through the whole drama more because I felt as if he was the only one that seemed to openly care about the female lead and didn’t seem to take her for granted. For the second male lead, the ex-boyfriend, I truly believed that he was a bit more original than the two leads simply because, generally, in kdrama, the ex-boyfriend isn’t portrayed as someone who had only the female lead’s best interest in mind if he isn’t the male lead. I thought that it was interesting to have him as a second lead with such personality and not the one of the selfish and full of himself ex-boyfriend that thinks he can get her back, even if he did nothing for her and would truly ruin her happiness. In other words, Ji-Hoon was a suitable match for the female lead, which, I thought, was nice, since she wasn’t pushed into Tae-Ho’s arms. I mean, she had the choice. She could go back together with Ji-Hoon once the misunderstanding cleared. Also, I’ll just briefly talk about this. I found Go-Ho’s family quite annoying, even though everything turned for the better at the end. As I watched the end, I found it really interesting how they decided to portray her mother and brother through the drama, since it was really realistic and I felt as if they were well-thought characters, even if they didn’t appear much. I mean, through them, I felt all the time the screenwriter had put in developing his character and was really pleased by it. Now, I’ll talk about something that I didn’t treat earlier. The female lead isn’t only pursued by the second male lead and the male lead, there’s also three other men that are after her. Why didn’t I talk about it earlier? Simply because I considered it not that important in the story, since they aren’t that important and, also, because it’s one of the main reason why I find the story quite cliché. I mean, everyone is after her, as always. So, for the three other men, we have the cliché of the sweet boy, the reliable boss and the pushy coworker. What I really liked was that they all have more depth than simply being a cliché. (SPOILERS) The sweet boy turns out to be bad, since he’s a player. The reliable boss is, in reality, a childish person that doesn’t deal with things the right way. The pushy coworker is, in fact, a reliable man that is trustworthy.
I’ll conclude here. I would say that the plot would deserve a 8/10, even though its progression is quite usual and cliché. The characters would deserve a 3/5 because, once the misunderstanding were cleared, I truly felt as if they had changed and grew. The tearjerker factor would be a 0/5, even though some might be a little touched with the break-up scene, but it’s not that dramatic.
