My final take on Queen of Tears? It was a one hell of a fucking journey + Thoughts on the finale

[Warning: Long-ass post ahead]

Queen of Tears released its final episode last Sunday, April 28. The show made history as it became tvN’s most watched drama, surpassing the 2019 hit Crash Landing on You. Park Ji-eun was the writer for both shows.

The story is about a couple who underwent a crisis in their third year of marriage. However, a significant event will not only change their lives but also pave the way for them to rediscover their love for each other. 

I personally got hooked into this show for three reasons:

First, the plot: Marriage tropes in a lot of dramas are usually about infidelity, toxic and abusive relationships that end in a nasty divorce. It happens in real life sadly, but I appreciate the fact that Park Ji-eun took a different route and gave us another realistic side of marriage. A couple who once had this warm, passionate love for each other became cold and distant over time because of one tragic event that left them wounded and broken. There were also other factors that added salt to the wound which caused them to drift further from one another. I’m not gonna go into details because I have already discussed this in earlier episodes. However, I love that there were a couple of flashbacks that tells the viewers of how their love story began, plus some extra bits and pieces in the epilogue that were either related to Hyun-woo and Hae-in’s past, or a particular scene in the current episode that was told from either of the character’s point of view. 

Switching from light and funny scenes to a more intense one then back to swoon-worthy moments and then the last thing you knew you were bawling your eyes out because of the heartbreaking scenes felt like a roller coaster ride, needless to say I was always on edge and I sometimes had to pause in the middle of the episode so I could breathe. That’s how intense the emotions were in this show. Like I have said before, this is not a rom-com but more like a heavy drama with a couple of light and funny scenes.

But the part in this story that appealed to me the most is that it will make you question, how much love can someone truly give? How far can you go to be with the person you love? And when everything seems black and white, would you be willing to stay? Or walk away? 

Second, the characters: Immediately, I was drawn to Baek Hyun-woo and Hong Hae-in. Usually in KDramas, it’s always the male lead who is cool, cold, nonchalant and rich af and the girl is the bubbly, cutesy-cutesy, overly dramatic, and broke. I absolutely LOVE the role reversal. Hae-in is the cool and badass wife while Hyun-woo is the cute, dramatic hubby and together, they make an ✨iconic couple✨. But on a more serious note, a lot of characters nowadays are into the red light/green light spectrum and don’t get me wrong, I love it. Who doesn’t love a green light character right? But again, Park Ji-eun wrote them in such a way that you wouldn’t perceive them as this ultra-perfect, no flaw character, but they aren’t toxic either (except for the main villains of course). A lot of the characters in the show have a good and flawed side, and I love it because that’s what makes them human, they are multi-layered which makes them complex, but at the same time, they were written in such a way that the viewers could have a deeper understanding of the characters, and even relate to them in some ways. 

Again with the exception of the villains, the character developments were so good. Witnessing this whole-ass process of them being flawed and broken characters to becoming the best versions of themselves were just the best.  

Third, the cast: Ah, I can go on and on about how every actor in this show was absolutely amazing! Again, Kim Soo-hyun has proven why he is Korea’s highest paid actor. I love that he can switch from this handsome, smart, and sexy lawyer, to a super cute, loving hubby, and then a man who would fight for his woman no matter what it takes. BITCH! The acting range of this guy is fucking LIMITLESS! As for Kim Ji-won, this is by far her best acting performance in my opinion. Hong Hae-in was such a difficult character to portray, but I love how she was able to effortlessly deliver Hae-in’s stoic, nonchalant exterior and when you look into her eyes you’ll see that vulnerable part of her that no one else except [her husband] sees. 

SooWon’s chemistry on the other hand is GOD-TIER! They were born to play Baek Hyun-woo and Hong Hae-in. Whether it’s a funny, romantic, or heavy scene, they nailed it to perfection! These two are the most married couple I have seen in a show. I feel sad that I’m not gonna see them together on-screen for sometime but I am hoping that they’d be able to work together again in the future. Although my delulu self is manifesting for them to be together irl 😂🤧

Park Sung-hoon, I have said before that he is so good at playing a villain. But I hope he gets to show his ability to portray a nice guy in the future, I need a break from him playing evil. 

Kwak Dong-yeon and Lee Joo-bin’s performances as the second couple deserve to be applauded as well. Despite their characters going through crazy shit, I love that they were able to deliver it on a lighter, heartwarming note in contrast to SoWoon’s heavier scenes.

Special mentions to the following 🗣️:

The Official Playlist of the Show- When I tell you that I have listened to every song in this playlist, I really mean it. I don’t understand the language, but everytime I hear a song from QOT, I can instantly imagine a particular scene from the show, that’s how magical it is. My most replayed song is The Reasons of my Smiles by BSS, but I also love Heize’s Hold me back, and the song that makes me the most emotional: Love you with all my heart by Crush. 

The cinematography: I’m not gonna go into details about the technicalities, but everything was perfectly shot, especially the scenes in Germany–it was dreamy, romantic, and beautiful. 

The crew members who worked behind the camera also need to be praised for the hard work, effort, and dedication they’ve put into making this show. 

There are things however about the show that I didn’t personally like or I think they could have done better. Here’s the link of why I think the storyline isn’t as good as I thought it would be: 

The final episode didn’t turn out the way I hoped it would be, although there were some parts of it that were really good like:

📍 Cheon Da-hye and Grace choosing to take accountability for their past actions (also Grace being the key player in bringing Mo Seul-hee down was the cherry on top) and has been given another chance to live honestly was one of the best character redemptions. 

📍The Hong family reclaiming what’s rightfully theirs, that was such a powerful scene.

📍Hyun-woo and Hae-in looking at each other after Mo Seul-hee was proven guilty for killing Hong Man-dae and all the other bullshits she did to Queens and the Hong family, as if saying, “It’s finally over,” and they did it together was so power couple coded. 

📍Aunt Beom-ja and husband #4 [really] taking their time to get to know each other…like literally. Her facial expression when Yeong-seong kissed her on the cheek instead of the lips like she was expecting was GOLD.

📍Mama and Papa Hong choosing a simpler and quieter life and hanging out with their besties (Mama and Papa Baek).

📍Hyun-woo and Hae-in taking their time to rebuild their relationship, then goes on to get married and have a baby, then visiting Germany every so often was the most heartwarming scene. 

📍I would say that the ending was a bittersweet one. Hae-in’s premonition came true, she died first and Hyun-woo never failed to visit her grave, and then eventually reuniting was one of the most realistic endings in a Kdrama. They lived a good life, they built a family, grew old together and reunited in the afterlife was beautiful but there was a certain ache in that part, perhaps a reminder that no matter how painful it gets, there is always a silver lining, and if you’re meant to be, you’re meant to be.

However, in addition to my linked post:

📍The first half of the story started really strong, but it dwindled the moment they added all of these ridiculous subplots. One Tumblr user commented that Hyun-woo and Hae-in’s marriage had enough issues as far as drama is concerned and I couldn’t agree more. 

📍I get that Mo Seul-hee is a shitty person but I don’t even know why she chose to prey on Hong Man-dae of all people. She could have done the same to other wealthy families (I mean he’s not the only gullible man out there with tons of money), but the question is, what did the Hong family do to her? Surely, there must have been a deeper meaning than just wanting money but alas, it's a question we'll probably never get an answer too.

📍The good thing is that we now fully understand why Yoon Eun-seong acted the way he did. He has mommy issues, abandonment issues, anger issues, etc. My prediction about him dying in the finale was correct, but there was no character redemption for him thus I don’t see the point on why they had to extend his Hae-in obsession arc towards the end. Take out all the irrelevant subplots, and the story still would have worked.

📍One of my biggest frustrations in the show was the fact that they only addressed BaekHong’s miscarriage after Hae-in lost her memories when they could have done that in the earlier episode (the scene where Hyun-woo and Hae-in had a heart-to-heart conversation about their failed marriage), it’s like the writer forgot about that part–which by the way was such a crucial part then she just inserted this scene somewhere in the finale. 

📍I was also disappointed that Hae-in's mom wasn't the one who comforted her during that scene where Hyun-woo was undergoing surgery after getting shot. It would have been such a perfect opportunity to heal their relationship. Also, I would have appreciated it if Mama Hong was the one who personally apologized to Hyun-woo for being harsh towards him.

📍I know I said that the ending was a more realistic one, but babes we were ROBBED! I would have loved to see a BaekHong wedding part 2, their pregnancy journey and moments with baby Soo-bin but alas, we were deprived of that too. As much as I find the finale realistic, I wouldn’t say that I was satisfied either.

📍I just remembered this now, but Papa Hong's and Aunt Beom-ja's other sibling could have actually contributed to ending the villain arc. He could have made moves to unravel Seul-hee and Eun-seong's crap, but idk writer-nim just placed him there just because 🤷.

Overall, do I think that this show is over hyped? Storywise, yes. As far as the actors’ performances go, they deserve it. 

Is the show worth watching? I’d say it’s worth checking out if you’re someone who likes heavy, intense dramas. If not, avoid this. Again, this is not a light rom-com. 

Would I rewatch? For BaekHong, yes but I’ll skip the irrelevant parts.

SERVICE - April

I worked voluntarily as an extra in a role of a passer-by. Akcja demokracja has made a short video available on YouTube that is encouraging people to vote and shows the importance of the upcoming election. TVN TV station wanted to do an interview with me where I state why is European Union important for me but I refused as I looked in the mirror :). Black smoke was constantly blowing in my face thats why I look so dirty in the photo. I hope all of this effort will result in greater attendance in the upcoming election.

CHANNELETTES SKETCH DUMP

Context: This is for my idea of Channelettes, which are Antropomorphised TV Channels. Or TV Channels Gijinka.

I love Gijinka ever since I became fixated with OS-Tans when I was young. Gijinka, in my opinion, is a good creative exercise in giving human qualities and characterization on non-human things.

I'm planning more on this project. But for the moment, have this sketch dump.

The First Sketches

Featuring early designs of ITV's Anglia, Southern Television and Channel Television. All being part of the United Kingdom's ITV Network.

While I did some ideas of TV Gijinka before, Adam Martyn's Ident Review Extra episode of the ITV Idents inspired the whole new Channelette Project, and with it, those first three designs.

The design for Anglia convinces me, while the others need more refining. Especially Southern Television. Although, Channel Television will be a catgirl, without doubt.

Deutsche Welle (Or DW-Lette)

RT-Lette

Based on the State-Owned Russian channel.

(Before I did this drawing, I did some sketch with her and CGTN. But I'll not post it here, since it's kinda unintelligible)

She will be portraited as a selfish daddy's girl (The "daddy" being of course The Pudin, You-know-who) who uses the majority of the money given for her own benefict. She doesn't like the other Channelettes. And the other Channelettes doesn't trust her.

She's CLEARLY made for satire. (NO Russophobia allowed with the character!! Xenophobia will NOT be tolerated!)

TV3 Catalunya

Based on TV3 of Catalunya, Spain.

The reason of me making this Channelette is because the 80s TV3 theme is so DAMN EPIC SOUNDING!!

I imagined a Gacha-Inspired animation of TV3-Lette with her flag-carrying spear. It was so cool, I HAD to draw her design.

I tried to draw her with a traditional Catalunya outfits. Making the flag was REALLY hard, though...

1984 TVN Gijinka (or 1984 TVN-Lette?)

Done in January 2023. Based on Chile's TVN logo from 1984 until 1988.

I LOVE this TVN logo, even if it was short-lived. I love it due to how beautiful and creative the idents are, with those two ribbons moving around. Really elegant idents, also.

I tried to make her design look so formal (Authoritarian? because ya know, dictatorship)

She needs a more defined design and a bigger drawing. Random idea, she will have Ribbons on her main design.

BBC News Early Design

Okay. I forgot that this sketch was from 2020!

I Watched the BBC World News channel and sometimes I watch it with my dad's TV box. And I liked watching the idents and the intros. And I love the countdown.

And I tried to draw her more, but I stopped with this. She needs a better design, still. BUT the idea of her using a antenna-inspired spear as her main weapon will carry on her design.

UCTV Early Design

Based on UCTV, actually named Canal 13, from Chile.

Oh god (ironic), this design also comes from 2020! The idea was older than I thought.

His design was based on a priest, because the UCTV at that time was owned by a Catholic university from Chile. (WAS, nowadays no more, since... Late 2000s early 2010s)

Also because the channel used to show off some priests telling reflections before the channel signs off. (I remember catching some of those Reflections when I was a kid. But I didn't payed attention to those)

While I like this design, I think I'll redesign him. Spoiler of the new design idea, the channel used to have bumpers with angel cartoons, and it's why UCTV was nicknamed "The Channel of the Little Angel" ("El Canal del Angelito"). Wink Wink.

There was this 2022 redraw of UCTV-Lette's design, with another designs for two other Chilean channels.

UCV Televisión, which design is the one with heels and one-eye covering hair. She's was the oldest Chilean TV channel, so i'll try to give her justice on a upcoming design.

AND Telecanal. Which is the one who's holding a box exclaiming "Buy My Shit". The joke refers to the fact that Telecanal's programming consists of an ABSURD majority of infomercials, and little to NO original content... I'm still baffled that this channel SOMEHOW is STILL AIRING. Sorry for the random rant. I'll try to come up with a better design.

I'll be continuing posting more sketches, as well as develop more of the Channelette project.

I'll be making a Masterpost of the whole Channelette later.

When I return to digital drawing, I'll try to digitise the designs. (And Hopefully do more drawings in general. I'm trying to make drawings from my tablet but... I need to build confidence with it)

The next day flew by, hours passing like seconds. A whirlwind of faces and words, nothing that could really secure your attention. You had been anticipating today all night, spending hours once you got home practicing what you wanted to say to Moon. So by the time everything began to slow, it was 9:30pm and the pizzaplex had now been closed for thirty minutes.

You held your clipboard to your side, going over the checklist one more time before calling it quits. You’d started your nightly duties about an hour before closing time, seeing as it was a relatively slow day for the daycare. Now, all you had to do was turn out the lights and wait. You sat the clipboard on the desk, before moving around to face the generator switch. Once you turned it off, there was no going back. It made everything real.

The switch groaned as you pulled it down, settling on ‘OFF.’ Rows of lights began to click off one at a time, slowly engulfing the room in a shroud of darkness. The only light came through the glass doors that led into the atrium, neon shades of pink and green that gave the room a hazy feel. Almost like a fever dream.

Moon had been out for about an hour, after Sunny’s final goodbyes to the children- he just let go. Moon hadn’t even planned to come out tonight, he had fulfilled his tastes for torment the night before- he had no reason to want to go out tonight. Yet, here he was. Basking in the darkness that the balcony’s curtain had provided- that was, until he heard the lights switch off.

You had hopped up to sit down on the front desks counter, swinging your legs back and forth. “Moon?” You called into the vast darkness, letting the sound ruminate within the abyss. “Can we talk?”

Moon perked up, leaning over the balcony slightly to see where you were. You had no business being here this late again, at least that’s what he thought. To be perfectly honest, Moon had really hoped he wouldn’t run into you tonight. He’d been internally beating himself up about his newest revelation, much of it had to do with you. “Talk, eh?” He whispered to himself, pushing off of the balcony to glide through the air- the bells on his pants letting out a small jingle.

You looked to the source of the noise, eyes widening as you watched the animatronic you needed to speak to literally flying. How, HOW was that even POSSIBLE. You bit back a gasp as he landed in front of you, feet hitting the ground with a metallic ‘clank.’ “H-ho-,” you began, only to be cut off.

“Talk.” He interrupted, still taller than you even with you being an extra foot off of the ground. He stepped closer, hand moving to grip the counter. His fingers brushed against your thigh, sending a shiver down your spine.

Your voice became unsteady, face burning crimson. “Y-yeah. Right.. sorry.” You cleared your throat, looking to meet his eyes. “Moon.. I need to tell you something. Something that.. I don’t know if you’ll understand.”

His interest peaked, he unintentionally leaned closer- taking in your every word. He hadn’t realized that his proximity had begun to make you even more nervous than you already were. “Go on.” He nodded, eyes locked onto yours.

“I have… uh, feelings,” You swallowed thickly, heart racing. “for you.”

Moon tested the waters, he knew that you meant- he just wanted to see how far he could go to get you to explain. He could see how flustered you were, he honestly found it endearing.. even, dare he say, cute. “What kind of feelings?”

You raised a hand to your hair, pushing back some free strands from your face. The anxiety had sent a tremor into your movements, making it seem much more frantic than it was. “Well.. uh.. like romantic.. feelings.” You muttered, embarrassed.

“So,” He began, moving his hand from the counter to rest on the side of your neck. “If I was to do.. something like.. this.” He wasn’t sure what he was doing but he’d processed enough data from the internet to know his way around. He dipped down to rest his lips upon your own, catching you completely off guard.

You gasped lightly in surprise, the cool sensation of his lips upon your own sending a thrill straight to your core. There was no way. This wasn’t happening. Was this even possible? Moon couldn’t possible.. want this.. could he?

Moon pulled away, eyes glinting with a hint of pride. “You’d like it.. wouldn’t you?” He whispered, face barely inches from your own.

Before you could verbally respond, you nodded. Your heart had melded into a puddle of desperation, he was so.. different. The feelings he gave you were much less pure than the feelings you had for his counterpart. “Yes, yes I would.” You responded, hands restraining themselves from reaching out to touch him. Just to make sure this was real.

Moon was overtaken with the urge to do it again, to feel you again. The look in your eyes urged him to go on, you were practically begging to be kissed again. His hand slid from your throat to the back of your head, intertwining with your hair before pulling back gently.

You groaned at the sensation, letting him handle you how he pleased. “Moon-,” you began, getting cut off by his lips crashing down on to your own.

This time was MUCH different than the first. He, himself, was just as desperate for another taste. The kiss was deep, sensual, it felt so wrong to want him so badly.

His other hand slipped beneath the loose cotton of your shirt, letting his fingers skim over your hip before planting itself at your waist. God, your skin was so soft. He didn’t want to take his hands off of you.

After a few more seconds, he pulled away- knowing how badly you needed to breathe but also because there was an elephant in the room- one that needed to be addressed before this could go any further.

“(Y/n), what about Sun?” He asked, releasing your hair and letting his hand slip down to rest upon your own. He saw you kiss Sunny, but now- you were kissing him. What did that mean?

You struggled to regain composure, clearing your throat gently before nodding. “I was going to get to that.” You let out a small laugh, attempting to shake off the haze that had settled over you. “I spoke to him about this yesterday. I have feelings for.. both of you. Sunny said he didn’t mind, honestly he was kinda happy. He wanted me to.. want you.”

Moon had to wrap his head around that, he was used to Sunny wanting to keep mostly everything to himself. He honestly thought that Sunny hated him, seeing as he had to share a body with the complete opposite of himself. “He wants us to.. share?” He questioned, a far off look overtaking his face.

You nodded slowly, biting the inside of your lip. It sounded awful, it wasn’t supposed to but.. it did. Sharing sounded so elementary. You wanted them both, you had strong feelings for them both. It only made sense.. right?

He squinted slightly, taking in the doe-like look that had flowered on your face. “Do you want us to share?” He asked, gently caressing your forearm- where the bruises he had left before were turning yellow and slowly disappearing. “If so, why?”

“Why?”

Moon raised an eyebrow, eyeing you as he lifted your arm to display your markings. “Why do you want me? I’ve hurt you, more than once.” He felt ashamed, now that these feelings had arose within him- he had lost all inkling to harm you. Before, he relished in the pain he brought to you, the fear as well. Everything was different now. Moon could feel for the first time.

A soft smile took place after the confusion had washed itself from your face. “Moon, that was before. You weren’t really.. alive yet. You didn’t have real emotions- just the programmed one you were cursed with. I don’t blame you.” You explained, moving your hand to caress the crescent moon. It was chilly, yet it emitted some warmth.

“(Y/n)-,” He began, only to have his attention taken by a loud ‘BANG’ coming from overhead.

“What the hell?” You wondered, looking up. There were only pipes and vents above the two of you, nothing that could make such a noise.

Moon held a finger to his lips, shushing you as he stepped back to see if something had maybe broken off. As he got a bit of distance, a glint from the shuttered vent caught his eye. It was almost like someone had turned off a flashlight to conceal their whereabouts.

The animatronic wasted no time, he was in front of you within a few seconds. “Go home, now.” He ordered, helping you down from the counter.

“Wha-? Moon? What’s wrong?“ You insisted, reaching out to grab your bag and security card from the inside of the desk.

He shook his head, hurrying you to the door. “Please, go home. I’ll explain later.” He promised, taking back steps to head towards the security door on the other side of the room. “I’ll see you then, (Y/n).”

You watched as he disappeared into the door, slamming it shut with an unnecessary amount of force. You went to push the glass door open when you remembered your jacket was in the storage room. The company didn’t like to keep such things in the same room as children- they were considered ‘choking hazards.’ It was dumb but company policy. You sighed, looking around before fast walking to the closet- as you went to open it, a warm hand came around to clamp down over your mouth.

Time seemed to stop, you went to pry the hand from your mouth when a metal hand gripped your wrists- yanking them behind your back and securing them with some type of plastic-y material. You wanted to scream, kick, fight back. That was, until you were jerked around to face your attacker.

“You’re a hard woman to pin down, you know that? Thanks to your robot boyfriend.” He sneered, hand moving up to your cheek. His hands were coarse and dirty, the sensation made you want to gag. His other hand was still clamped on your mouth- keeping you from screaming for help. “You know, I’ve been watching you. Longer than you think, too. Ever since you started this stupid job. Watching. Waiting. For the perfect moment. Just for you to fall for a ROBOT, an actual ROBOT.” He was fuming at this point, hand moving from your cheek to press into your throat. “We could’ve been so good together, baby.”

You felt like you were going to throw up, he disgusted you. How could you have not noticed? How was he watching you? Who really was he? What did he want to do with you? Was this it? character in general: tVN goblin’s reaper is a canon character?? who said that?? i thought alex created reaper JFKLSJDL okay but seriously, i adore ALL THREE versions of essentially the same soul ( reincarnation, multiple lives, I LIVE FOR THAT KIND OF STUFF :’D )- the fact that reaper, hyuk, and yeo are all so distinctly unique in their personalities, voices, backstories, preferences ( like how yeo likes sweets, but hyuk prefers bitter flavors ), and even character arcs...AND EVEN THEN?? they all resonate with one another?? the attributes of this soul is still there?? alex you literally created your own lore and IT’S SO JUICY and sorry tVN, it’s like lena said, i’m here for alex’s canon, i will not be accepting anything else- how they play them: where am i supposed to start with this?? well first i’d like to say i adore all three of them, reaper, the competent, but messenger who really really deserves a break, i’m sorry for all the chaos and headaches my muses are giving him JFKLSDJF, wang yeo, the extra(tm) fox with a heart of gold ( i can’t wait to see him interact more with mana 🥺 ), and then finally my grumpy child-in-law, lee hyuk bc ALEX HELP I LOVE HIM SO MUCH I WANT TO PROTECC HIM WITH MY LIFE, I DON’T CARE IF HE SCOWLS AT ME 🥺🥺🥺 okay but seriously i think all three of them are written beautifully, and maybe i’m sounding like a broken record here, but alex’s portrayal is never like?? overexaggerated?? like for example, yes, one of hyuk’s defining characteristics is his grumpiness, but he’s never outright mean, that side portrayed realistically in that there always a reason ( however minuscle jskdlfj ) for him to act up, it’s not like he’s always rude for no apparent reason....basically what i’m trying to say is that alex writes people not archetype and that is just skill in and of itself <3 the mun: someone i would gladly throw hands for. and yes, i know, i’m being biased, but i am legitimately serious when i say that alex is one of the NICEST ppl on this hellsite. not only is she an excellent writer both in content and style, but she also just?? genuinely cares about all of her partners?? and like this care also extends outside of the dash too?? literally, words cannot describe how much i completely adore alex and how LUCKY i feel to have the privilege to write, plot, and just be friends with her in general. she is absolutely one of the best things that has come out of my time on tumblr and i hope to be able to write and be friends with her for a very long time to come 😊

It's seem like I pick up new dramas mostly for the cast these days and just hope that the plot will be good. Although there are still genres I hesitate to watch even with cast that I like. But for Jirisan I feel like I am not only here for Jun Ji Hyun and Joo Ji Hoon but also for the screenwriter Kim Eun Hee.

I have enjoyed both Signal (although not my genre per say) and Kingdom (can we get a season 3 soon, please!). I think she is quite good at mysteries and layering her stories so I am excited what Jirisan has in store for us. The mystery of the mountain itself and the possible spiritual or more mythological elements that might be woven into the story is quite intriguing and were presented well in the first two episodes.

Or maybe it’s just me wanting some ghost or spiritual elements... because it’s October and I would love if we could get a new horror kdrama right about now. Or do I just need to rewatch the Guest?

From what I have read about Korean mythology a lot of spiritual and shamanic stuff and just lore in general seems to have a whole lot to do with the mountains that are everywhere around Korea. I would love to see that incorporated into the story. The whole spirit of the mountain and the mountain holding a sort of guiding hand over the guests and the people there is very intriguing to me.

The drama does not really waste any time and just sends us straight into action without too much introduction to the characters first. We just get to know them as the story goes along which I really enjoyed. The way the story gives us information and details to these characters doesn't feel forces but rather organic.

So often first episodes are just backstory, a bit of infodumps and character introduction. Here the story takes of right away. Sure it’s more plot than character as of now, but I enjoyed it. It feels like a very plot-driven show as I often feel these types of mysteries are.

The CGI in ep 1 was a bit meh at times, but I can forgive that. This isn't a big budget hollywood movie and it didn't look laughable ether. There were times where I didn't notice it that much. I have seen worse from BBC in Doctor Who.

It's hard to not compare it this drama to other dramas by the same writer and you can see some echoes of Signal here with the time jumps, us trying to know why Hyun Jo is in a coma and what happened to Yi Kang, and even in the sort of visions that Hyun Jo experiences. There is this extra layer to the mystery because of it which I think is fun.

The drama is also stunning. Not only is the cast great and it has a fun cast of character but the scenery and nature shots are also so pretty. I am hoping this will be a fun ride all the way through and the mystery does manage to hold my fascination all the way through.

Also I am suspecting no romance? which I think might be great. I am not sure if Kim Eun Hee writes that much romance. And I don't think the story needs it. But I could be wrong here. This is a kdrama after all (but even western shows shove romance into stories that don't need them). And with Joo Ji Hoon and Jun Ji Hyun I don't think I would be totally against a make out scene or two. Just for vanity's sakes, you know. 

My main complain will forever be that TvN does not need to make their episodes so long. Quality over quantity, people. You run the risk, again and again, to run out of story before you reach the end. Just add more episodes! Have it 20 instead of 16. It's not that hard!

Kdrama: Vincenzo

My rating: 8/10

Mr. Song 'Vincenzo Cassano' Joong Ki at his finest. Vincenzo doesn't take itself too seriously and it knows how to have fun, just what we all need right now, and that's where this hit drama's charm lies. It feels a bit like 'revengey' Suits x sitcom x heist drama. It's about an ex(?) mafia and a ragtag group of neighbors getting themselves unexpectedly involved in a fight for justice.

It's so nice to see Song Joong Ki in a (kinda?) light role again. He get to do a lot of things here, with all those expensive suits, slow mo's and closeups. I still wish he'll do a full blown comedy (like Sungkyunkwan) because he's kind of the straight man with a great comedic supporting cast. Lol I think this show is half a SJK modeling/ad show. (Lord, I want his flawless skin.) I appreciated the fact that he still acts his socks off unlike other hyped actors.

The romance here are basically just crumbs. SJK and Jeon Yeo Been looks good together, she does tend to overact at times, but that's forgivable esp. for comedy, and it's wonderful her career is taking off esp. after Vincenzo. I love that we are getting unapologetic loud heroines like her.

Mild spoilers:

Admittedly I haven't watched Taec for a long time, but he really improved his acting a lot! I wished there was more of him as an adorably bumbling intern. As main villain though, he still lacked that creep factor. It's great they tried a different look for Kim Yeo Jin as Ms. Prosecutor Choi (not very polished), but she also lacked that sinister feel. Maybe it was deliberate casting as the show has to balance the dark with its comic edge.

Kwak Dong Yeon is amazing as always. The whole cast is good, my always fave trope of small town village feel and found family concept because of the colorful Geumga plaza dwellers, and their crazy quest for hidden gold. One thing I hated is the length! I like me some SJK but omg tvn pls cut your drama episodes to 1 hr, it feels extra long and superfluous when bingeing. This probably works better as a weekly watch.
