The year is 1923.
It was called The Passage to Fortune. Hundreds of Chinese immigrants to Canada were offered work, with the promise they could make enough money to bring their families to Canada. But much of it was indentured servitude.
These immigrants received very little help, but many did go on to bring their families to Canada, eventually. There was only a few bright spots during this time.
Harry Wong had made his way north, finding work in a mining camp just outside Brentwood, Saskatchewan. There he found maybe a dozen other Chinese workers. The work was long and arduous, and for little pay. But each of them had accommodation and travel to and from Brentwood. It wasn't long before a Chinese district sprang up in Brentwood's north east side.
Wong built his own laundry. A friend of his Edward Chen, built a restaurant. A clothing store soon opened. By the end of the 1920s, there was a full street of Chinese businesses in Brentwood's north west section, with residential areas branching off from it.
And much like the past, many of the city's other residents supported these small business ventures. Soon, Brentwood had one of the largest Chinese populations in Canada. While city's like Vancouver obviously had the largest Chinese immigrant population, word spread about Brentwood.
Thanks to the influx of people to Brentwood, it became the fourth largest city in Saskatchewan, behind Saskatoon, Regina and Moose Jaw.
And this would not be the last group migration to come to Brentwood. As for Harry and Edward, both would go on to become important members of the business community, even going so far as to help new businesses open up in the community. Edward would go on to organizing a charitable organization to assist with the creation of housing for new residents, and he grew interested in building a sporting tradition in Brentwood.
Today, both the family names of Wong and Chen are just as important to Brentwood as many of the French Canadian, Metis and Indigenous families that live in the city.

i think what a lot of people need to understand about dune is that frank herbert watched lawrence of arabia which is a movie based on the real life account of a real man who fought alongside arab tribes and peoples in a revolt against the ottoman empire. It's also a scathing takedown of the white saviour, just a clinical excision of why exactly there's no such thing. It paints a vivid picture of british imperialism and why 'good men' working from within said empire can do fuck all to help liberate anyone. it's also a really heartbreaking gay love story, and it gave the world one of the greatest romantic heroes in Sherif Ali.
Frank Herbert saw all that and decided, but what if it was homophobic instead, and there was desert cocaine and worms, and the white saviour had superpowers as a result of eugenics.

Books of 2024: THE DEATH I GAVE HIM by Em X. Liu.
Up next! Hamlet retelling but make it science + a locked-lab mystery (which is, of course, directly up my alley!). Horatio is the lab's resident AI, and I'm so excited to see how this goes.

Well, this was certainly intriging. Edward frowned at the screen, his wan face twisted with an expression of mixed annoyance at being disturbed right in the middle of some delicate calibrations, yet curiosity mingled with that sour note as instead of finding that some bumbling goon had set off his alarm system yet again, but neither was it that bothersome bat. A stranger had come, entering his domain. Nobody he recognized, and Edward was pretty sure he knew most people, at least those who were worth his time, and yet the masked stranger he saw wandering around his labyrinthian lair had captured his attention. How had they managed to find her way inside? He was certain he'd locked up every nook and cranny so tight even a rat would struggle to get in. Of course, it had to have been the fault of one of his men! The Riddler would never be so careless as to let a complete stranger come waltzing inside to do as they pleased. Seizing his microphone, Edward gave a rare pause, pondering how best to address this... situation. Whoever this pest was, they had to have known who he was, perhaps having come to consult him on some trivial matter. It couldn't be by dumb luck that they'd just ended up here, so he pondered a little more as he watched, eyes straying to the baseball bat in their hand. Trivia flooded to his mind, as much as his face flooded with an unpleasant expression of amusement. It was time to say hello and find out if this person had a modicum of intellect regarding the object in their hand, otherwise what right did they have to come bother him? "A man is running home, but is afraid to go there, for a man in a mask is waiting for him. Who is the man in the mask?" Static and distortion bounced off the walls as Edward flipped on the microphone and spoke his riddle out loud, allowing his voice to permeate the area. Unless the intruder were as deaf as they were dumb, they'd have no excuse not to answer him, and if they got his riddle wrong? His thin, tired face twisted into an even uglier smile, the man leaning forwards to see how the masked stranger would respond. Well, they'd better hope for their sake they could at least answer his little question or they'd be in a lot of trouble...

Yu Ziyou's transformation from a very polite, nice mannered, upright gentleman in his teenage years to this unpredictable irritable and sometimes outright crazy adult is just so sad. Well, when he suddenly realized that one of his foundations in life is all a lie, then why should he care about anyone's opinions of him anymore. I don't know if it was half an act to get the enemies' attention off him or really the result of a major nervous breakdown or the side effect of that toxin he's been intentionally ingesting himself. It's sad he just didn't trust no one anymore.
Also the premise of whether once there was and wasn't a connection between Zhong Wan and himself in the past, Zhong Wan using false rumours of their romance as a shield for his adopted family was very interesting. Off to an ambiguous starts lol. I was expecting Yu Ziyou to be angry about it but his reaction really surprised me. Still he didn't trust Zhong Wan nor did Zhong Wan him. Watching them planning and scheming separately but with the same result in mind then slowly learning to trust each other is so interesting. I may not remember it clearly but I was so happy when they finally joined forces to work together and take their enemies down.

ok paris trip! cheeky summary :-) (limited by image count lol)
we went up to the artists streets bc i wanted to see the big church and i was fully charmed by the buildings, different areas have very different charms to them. i took a lot of photos of fragments of buildings like these two. i always take pictures like this, the charm of a city comes through in the life reflected in ordinary houses
Tumblr media Tumblr media
also big church. pretty. i dont follow Christianity but they sort of went off with the architecture

TWO pyramid selfies for your viewing pleasure. i didnt know there was an upside down one as well! i also did a really bad job at aligning my hand to the pyramids ndjshdjddn

louvre. i love a statue. miss venus was so incredible in person.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
this was my second favourite statue(tte?) in the louvre. after miss venus. its from mexico 300-400AD and its a little fella with a WARRIOR INSIDE.

and on the final day we went to the eiffel tower. the scale of it is always insane to me, they have this other teeny eiffel tower built near it which looks big when youre next to it. then the further away you get the scale of the real eiffel tower becomes evident (its in the second photo, on the right behind the trees)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
tumblr has limited me to 10 photos :( so not pictured: me getting immediately addicted to petit déjeuner with cafe créme, the teeny apartment out of the city centre we were staying, with a bistro where a guy gave me a free shot of limoncello because it was my birthday:)) the fancy dinner we went to, the selfies i took with liberty leading the people (!!!!), the little video i took blowing a kiss to spain, photos of other tourist-y and less tourist-y areas, the 100 other louvre photos i took 😂
