imagine how much quicker and more efficient public transport would be if it didn't contain the bottleneck of paying fare at the front? if people could just shuffle on and find their seats instead of forming and waiting in a queue? if you could board the bus from the side door as well as the front door? imagine what better things those schmucks working fare enforcement could be doing with their lives.
imagine how much easier it would be for victims of domestic abuse if housing was free and guaranteed? if nobody was tied to their abuser through financial means and could just leave and start anew without fear of destitution? if childcare was a public resource given to everyone who has children instead of the sole responsibility of the two individuals that created the child?
imagine how many people we could feed if food was distributed directly for free as a matter of course instead of being shipped to stores to sit in purgatory on shelves until it's either bought, stolen, or thrown out because it didn't sell? imagine nobody ever having their life ruined because they were starving and shoplifted food to survive? imagine "shoplifting" (based as it may be now) becoming unheard of because there are no shops to lift from and everyone is already fed anyway?
capitalism kills innovation, and more importantly,
capitalism kills human beings.

"An upcoming community center in Tanzania will be defined by its cutting-edge 3D-printed design. However, rather than being built from layered concrete as you'd usually expect with 3D-printed projects, its walls will be created using locally sourced soil.
The community center is being headed by Hassell, in collaboration with Australian-based charity foundation One Heart, for the Hope Village in Tanzania. It forms part of a wider plan to provide housing, a school, childcare and skills training to vulnerable young girls in Kibaha, eastern Tanzania.
"The Hope Village community hall design seeks to create a beautiful, functional, safe and uplifting environment that provides both hope and education for vulnerable girls," says Mark Loughnan, Principal and Head of Design at Hassell. "The hall is a welcoming space that creates an innovative central activity hub that also connects with its surrounding environment. The design and building process for the hall aims to engage the community and provide ongoing opportunities for local participation and education throughout construction."
Structurally, the community center is quite complex. Its walls (which are not load-bearing) will be built using soil sourced within 25 km (15.5 miles) of the site and a WASP 3D printer. WASP has been researching this stuff for years now and a previous project used a mixture of mud, straw, rice husk and lime. A similar process will be happening here, with a clay based earthen mixture being extruded out of a nozzle in layers to build up the walls. A representative at Hassell told us that the walls will also be reinforced with a thin wire mesh between layers.
Inside, the design brief calls for a large, open floorplan that suits the local climate, with a limited number of columns to ensure its flexibility. To achieve this, Hassell has conceived a central steel beam that serves as the structural spine of the hall. This will support a roof made from locally sourced timber sections. The roof will feature cladding made of readily available corrugated metal sheet panels, helping to keep costs down.
The project also involves the Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia, IAAC, and ClarkeHopkinsClarke. We've no word yet on when it's expected to be completed, though prototype walls have already been produced.
Pictured: A prototype of the community center's 3D printed walls has already been created.

When you hear "fintech," think "unlicensed bank"
Tomorrow (May 2) I’ll be in Portland at the Cedar Hills Powell’s with Andy Baio for my new novel, Red Team Blues.
In theory, patents are for novel, useful inventions that aren’t obvious “to a skilled practitioner of the art.” But as computers ate our society, grifters began to receive patents for “doing something we’ve done for centuries…with a computer.” “With a computer”: those three words had the power to cloud patent examiners’ minds.
If you’d like an essay-formatted version of this post to read or share, here’s a link to it on pluralistic.net, my surveillance-free, ad-free, tracker-free blog:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/05/01/usury/#tech-exceptionalism
Patent trolls — who secure “with a computer” patents and then extract ransoms from people doing normal things on threat of a lawsuit — are an underappreciated form of “tech exceptionalism.” Normally, “tech exceptionalism” refers to bros who wave away things like privacy invasions by arguing that “with a computer” makes it all different.
These tech exceptionalists are the legit face of tech exceptionalism, the Forbes 30 Under 30 set. They’re grifters, but they’re celebrated grifters. There’s a whole bottom-feeding sludge of tech exceptionalists that don’t get the same kind of attention, like patent trolls.
Oh, and the fintech industry.
As Riley Quinn says, “when you hear ‘fintech,’ think: ‘unlicensed bank.’” The majority of fintech “innovation” consists of adding “with a computer” to highly regulated activities and declaring them to be unregulated (and, in the case of crypto, unregulatable).
There are a lot of heavily regulated financial activities, like dealing in securities (something the crypto industry is definitely doing and claims it isn’t). Most people don’t buy or sell securities regularly — indeed, most Americans own little or no stocks.
But you know what regulated financial activity a lot of Americans participate in?
Going into debt.
As wages stagnate and the price of housing, medical care, childcare, transportation and education soar, Americans fund their consumption with debt. Trillions of dollars’ worth of debt. Many of us are privileged to borrow money by walking into a bank and asking for a loan, but millions of Americans are denied that genteel experience.
Instead, working Americans increasingly rely on payday lenders and other usurers who charge sky-high interest rates, on top of penalties and fees, trapping borrowers in an endless cycle of indebtedness. This is an historical sign of a civilization in decline: productive workers require loans to engage in useful activities. Normally, the activity pans out — the crop comes in, say — and the debt is repaid.
But eventually, you’ll get a bad beat. The crop fails, the workshop burns down, a pandemic shuts down production. Instead of paying off your debt, you have to roll it over. Now, you’re in an even worse situation, and the next time you catch a bad break, you go further into debt. Over time, all production comes under the control of creditors.
The historical answer to this is jubilee: a regular wiping-away of all debt. While this was often dressed up in moral language, there was an absolutely practical rationale for it. Without jubilee, eventually, all the farmers stop growing food so that they can grow ornamental flowers for their creditors’ tables. Then, as starvation sets in, civilization collapses:
https://pluralistic.net/2022/07/08/jubilant/#construire-des-passerelles
As the debt historian Michael Hudson says, “Debts that can’t be paid, won’t be paid.” Without jubilee, indebtedness becomes a chronic and inescapable condition. As more and more creditors attach their claims to debtors’ assets, they have to compete with one another to terrorize the debtor into paying them off, first. One creditor might threaten to garnish your paycheck. Another, to repossess your car. Another, to evict you from your home. Another, to break your arm. Debts that can’t be paid, won’t be paid — but when you have a choice between a broken arm and stealing from your kid’s college fund or the cash-register, maybe the debt can be paid…a little. Of course, digital tools offer all kinds of exciting new tools for arm-breakers — immobilizing your car, say, or deleting the apps on your phone, starting with the ones you use most often:
https://pluralistic.net/2021/04/02/innovation-unlocks-markets/#digital-arm-breakers
Under Trump, payday lenders romped through America. A lobbyist for the payday lenders became a top Trump lawyer:
https://theintercept.com/2017/11/27/white-house-memo-justifying-cfpb-takeover-was-written-by-payday-lender-attorney/
This lobbyist then oversaw Trump’s appointment of a Consumer Finance Protection Bureau boss who deregulated payday lenders, opening the door to triple digit interest rates:
https://www.latimes.com/business/lazarus/la-fi-lazarus-cfpb-payday-lenders-20180119-story.html
To justify this, the payday loan industry found corruptible academics and paid them to write papers defending payday loans as “inclusive.” These papers were secretly co-authored by payday loan industry lobbyists:
https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/2019/02/25/how-payday-lending-industry-insider-tilted-academic-research-its-favor/
Of course, Trump doesn’t read academic papers, so the payday lenders also moved their annual conference to a Trump resort, writing the President a check for $1m:
https://www.propublica.org/article/trump-inc-podcast-payday-lenders-spent-1-million-at-a-trump-resort-and-cashed-in
Biden plugged many of the cracks that Trump created in the firewalls that guard against predatory lenders. Most significantly, he moved Rohit Chopra from the FTC to the CFPB, where, as director, he has overseen a determined effort to rein in the sector. As the CFPB re-establishes regulation, the fintech industry has moved in to add “with a computer” to many regulated activities and so declare them beyond regulation.
One fintech “innovation” is the creation of a “direct to consumer Earned Wage Access” product. Earned Wage Access is just a fancy term for a program some employers offer whereby workers can get paid ahead of payday for the hours they’ve already worked. The direct-to-consumer EWA offers loans without verifying that the borrower has money coming in. Companies like Earnin claim that their faux EWA services are free, but in practice, everyone who uses the service pays for the “Lightning Speed” upsell.
Of course they do. Earnin charges sky-high interest rates and twists borrowers’ arms into leaving a “tip” for the service (yes, they expect you to tip your loan-shark!). Anyone desperate enough to pay triple-digit interest rates and tip the service for originating their loan is desperate and needs to the money now:
https://prospect.org/power/05-01-2023-fintech-ewa-payday-loan-scam/
EWA annual interest rates sit around 300%. The average EWA borrower uses the service two or three times every month. EWA CEOs and lobbyists claim that they’re banking the unbanked — but the reality is that they’re acting as sticky-fingered brokers between banks and young, poor workers, marking up traditional bank services.
This fact is rarely mentioned when EWA companies lobby state legislatures seeking to be exempted from usury rules that are supposed to curb predatory lenders. In Vermont, Earnin wants an exemption from the state’s 18% interest rate cap — remember, the true APR for EWA loans is about 300%.
In Texas, payday lenders are classed as loan brokers, not loan originators and are thus able to avoid the state’s usury caps. EWAs are lobbying the Texas legislature for further exemptions from state money-transmitter and usury limit laws, principally on the strength of the “it’s different: we do it with a computer” logic.
But as Jarod Facundo writes for The American Prospect, quoting Monica Burks from the Center for Responsible Lending, a loan is a loan even if it’s with a computer: “The industry is trying to create a new definition for what a loan is in order to exempt themselves from existing consumer protection laws… When you offer someone a portion of money on the promise that they will repay it, and often that repayment will be accompanied with fees or charges or interest, that’s what a loan is.”
Catch me on tour with Red Team Blues in Mountain View, Berkeley, Portland, Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto, DC, Gaithersburg, Oxford, Hay, Manchester, Nottingham, London, and Berlin!

The Cracks in the Foundation: A Look at Poor Quality Education
Education is where society begins. It shapes the future, fuels innovation, encourages creativity, and empowers individuals. But what happens when the foundation starts to crumble? When quality education collapses, the consequences can ripple through future generations, leaving a legacy of inequality and limited potential. If you know a thing or two about the struggle of Poor Education, critical issue of education, the hidden or ignored problems and you want to be aware about it. If you are looking for a way on how to support poor quality education, then this blog is for you.
THE STATISTICS OF THE CHALLENGES IN ACHIEVING QUALITY EDUCATION
Statistics show that we are falling far behind and we need to take action with utmost urgency. The world cannot afford to let millions of children fall behind, deprived of the education. unable to reach their full potential. We must invest in education, bridge the gaps in access and quality, and build a future where every student has the opportunity to learn and thrive. This serves as a stark reminder that we urgently need to invest in education and ensure that every child has access to quality learning. We must face these challenges and build a future where everyone has the chance to succeed.
CAUSE OF POOR-QUALITY EDUCATION
Lack of funding:
Lack of qualified teachers: Little pay and no or fewer professional development opportunities will discourage better teaching professionals from teaching in less privileged schools.
Poor infrastructural facilities: Poor ventilated classrooms, crumbling buildings, and even the lack of adequate water supply and sanitation facilities.
Inadequate Learning Materials: The absence of books, computers, and other fundamental learning equipments may limit the interaction with the curriculum among the students.
2. Poor Teaching Skills:
Lack of training by the teachers: Teachers may not have the expertise and knowledge in conducting interesting and useful teaching processes.
Large class populations: The teacher is unable to offer every individual attention and care for her/his students due to a huge number of students in a class.
Discrimination and prejudices: The victimisation of the marginalized groups in the society is carried out in the classroom, and they are supposed to be treated with fewer expectations and fewer opportunities.
3. Systematic inequalities:
Gender discrimination: Girls are specifically disadvantaged in the shackles of education, especially in developing regions. It is because of culture in some cases, and in others, lack of economic power and security in school.
Socioeconomic disparities: Many children from low-income backgrounds cannot attend schools due to poverty, poor childcare, and an uncaring parent.
Schooling inequality based on rural-urban divide: There will be fewer resources, fewer qualified teachers in rural areas of development than in their equivalents in urban communities, and students from the former may gain lesser educational achievements.
CONSEQUENCES OF POOR QUALITY EDUCATION
1. Individual Level:
• Scarce and low-paying jobs : Individuals without adequate education are confined to low-remuneration jobs and are unable to undertake stable employment. • Economic mobility: Education prevents subsequent generations from devolving into poverty cycles, although education impacts economic ability to achieve success in the labor market. • Health outcomes: Education fosters healthy behaviors while developing an understanding of health information. Poor education leads to underlining bad health results.
2. Community Level:
• Economic stagnation: It prevents economic growth, development, and leads to a leakage of skills. • Social unrest: High unemployment and poverty lead to social unrest and instability. • Limited civic engagement: Citizens educated are knowledgeable, conscious, and have a voice in the democratic process and are able to get their leaders accountable.
3. National Level:
• Competitiveness reduced: Low-quality education systems make it hard for countries to compete on the global economic scale. • Inadequate innovations: The absence of sufficiently skilled employees and an innovation culture can easily hinder technological advancement. • The excess usage of foreign aid: A country with a poor education system will inevitably use more foreign aid within their society to solve the social and economic issues.
SOLUTIONS
1. Increased funding:
•Infrastructure development: That means the quality school building and maintaining them, computer technology, and enough resources for learning. •Raise the salary of teacher and professional development: Higher salaries and professional benefits will attract current qualified teachers; however, low salaries and the lack of both might discourage qualified teachers from teaching. •Expand access to early childhood education: Early childhood education programs can lay down sound foundations for future learning and development.
2. Better Teaching Skills:
• Evidence-based instructional approaches: Use teaching methods that have been proven to increase involvement and learners' achievement • Class size: Limiting the number of students for each teacher enables them to fully cater to an individual's needs • Equity and excellence: All learners should have equal opportunities for quality education that recognizes cultural heritage and social background
3. Systemic Inequalities:
• Institutionalizing gender equality in school: Availing girls with equal opportunity in education while putting them on watch for safety in schools. • Eradicating poverty and extending social safety nets: Poverty needs to be eradicated through these net services thereby offering the opportunities that are economic ensuring all children can go to schools. • Rural development: Extending resources towards making rural communities at par with the urban community.
WAYS TO SUPPORT:
Support International Organizations: Volunteer or donate to organizations like UNICEF, Save the Children, or the World Bank and bring attention to education reform in developing countries.
Educate Yourself: Learn more about the issues and opportunities in international education. Learn the problems with the children of other nations and how you can help with that.
Share Your Knowledge: Talk about global education with friends and family, and encourage them to become involved.
Donations: Organizations working for education improvement, helping schools with allocations of resources and funding for training teachers, educational reform.
Advocate : Speak out for quality education. Share information, write to your elected officials, and participate in campaigns that support educational initiatives.
Engage Your Community: Attend school board meetings, offer to volunteer at local libraries, or become active in the events of your community that would promote literacy and learning.
Addressing this challenge requires a concerted effort from governments, educators, communities, and individuals. By investing in education, improving teaching practices, and addressing systemic inequalities, we can create a world where all children have the opportunity to reach their full potential.
Remember: " Every action, big or small, can contribute to creating a world where everyone has access to quality education."

For decades, Britain’s Left-wing elite has looked at Europe’s high-spending social model with a degree of awe.
France, Germany and Scandinavia have long been viewed, perhaps through rose-tinted spectacles, as examples of what the UK could be if governments were not so tight-fisted.
Under Sir Keir Starmer, Labour is determined to give the country a much bigger state. Official projections published alongside the Budget last month show government spending will settle at around 45pc of GDP.
Spending has never been sustained at these levels before, only reaching such highs briefly in the nation’s worst moments – including the pandemic, the financial crisis and the 1970s oil shocks.
So at last the UK has a chance of becoming the high-spending social democracy of Labour dreams.
It is unfortunate, then, that this is the moment Christine Lagarde has chosen to issue an extraordinarily vivid warning: Europe’s social models are utterly unsustainable.
Weak and uncompetitive economies risk running out of money to fund their sprawling welfare states unless they can reverse decades of relative decline and emulate America’s runaway success in tech, the president of the European Central Bank (ECB) cautioned.
“Our productivity growth in Europe is progressively slowing, which means that our ability to generate income is diminishing. If left unchecked, we will face a future of lower tax revenues and higher debt ratios,” she said in a speech in Paris.
“We face a rising old-age dependency ratio which will drive up public spending on pensions. And it is estimated that governments will need to spend in excess of €1 trillion (£836bn) a year to meet our investment needs for climate change, innovation and defence.
“If we cannot raise productivity, we risk having fewer resources for social spending.”
Those pressures are only going to mount. Pensions, for instance, are becoming ever more expensive. More than one-fifth of the populations of Spain, Germany and France are now aged over-65. In Italy, almost one-quarter have reached that age. Two decades ago, none had more than 20pc in the cohort.
Projections from the United Nations show even more stark increases to come. In Italy, for instance, more than one-third of the population will be aged 65 or older by 2040.
In Britain, not only is the share of pensioners rising – despite increases to the state pension age – but the generosity of the benefits they receive is also increasing.
The triple lock means the state pension rises by the highest of inflation, wages or 2.5pc each year, meaning benefits paid out in old age are, over time, guaranteed to rise more quickly than the incomes of the people whose taxes cover the cost. Adding to that is the cost of healthcare for those pensioners.
As Lagarde put it: “We face and will continue to face growing expenditure arising from a changing security environment, ageing populations and the climate transition.”
Cutting back any of those benefits is appallingly hard, as successive British governments have found. Not unsurprisingly, voters whose taxes paid for previous generations of pensioners find it galling to be asked to receive less themselves.
Similarly in France, Emmanuel Macron faced widespread protests against his plans to raise the pension age. Marine Le Pen’s National Rally made big gains in this year’s general election, in part on promises to reverse the increase.
Costs are also growing for other age groups, with more generous childcare subsidies on offer in Britain, as well as a rising population of working-age benefits claimants.
Europe is ‘trailing behind’
If Europeans want to keep on enjoying such largesse, they need to find a way to pay the bills, says Lagarde.
“Europe is under pressure. The rapid pace of technological change triggered by the digital revolution has left us trailing behind,” said the ECB president and former managing director of the International Monetary Fund.
“We need to adapt quickly to a changing geopolitical environment and regain lost ground in competitiveness and innovation. Failure to do so could jeopardise our ability to generate the wealth needed to sustain our economic and social model, which the vast majority of Europeans nevertheless hold dear.”
While the US economy roared back from Covid, Europe’s recovery was distinctly underwhelming, with Germany effectively failing to grow at all from its 2019 level. But the problem is not just a lockdown after-effect.
Over the past 20 years, productivity has grown twice as fast in the US as in the eurozone. Output for every hour worked has climbed by more than one-quarter in America compared to less than 13pc in the single currency area.
In Britain the situation is even worse, with productivity up by less than one-tenth.
The world’s largest companies illustrate the problem. By market capitalisation, the biggest five – each worth more than $2 trillion – are all American, led by Apple. All are also tech companies – chip-maker Nvidia, Microsoft, Google-owner Alphabet, and Amazon.
In sixth place, at a mere $1.8 trillion, is the first non-American entry, Saudi Aramco, the state oil company.
Most of the top 20 are American. The first European company is in 25th place – Denmark’s Novo Nordisk, famed for its manufacture of Ozempic and Wegovy, and worth the best part of half a trillion dollars.
The biggest European tech company is SAP, a relatively unsung German titan of business technology, and the 37th-largest listed company globally.
The industries in which Europe was traditionally a world leader are under growing threat.
Germany’s car industry is struggling to compete with cheap electric vehicles from China and fashion and luxury groups are at risk from tariffs if president-elect Donald Trump makes good on his campaign policy to impose border taxes of 10pc or even 20pc on imported goods.
LVMH, the 34th-biggest company and star of French industry, ranks highly on Morgan Stanley’s list of businesses which are exposed to US tariffs, because of the large share of products which the luxuries group sells over the Atlantic.
It is also exposed to any slowdown in trade with China, showing how exposed Europe has become to geopolitical tensions.
Lagarde says the Continent risks a “middle-technology trap”.
“We are specialised in technologies that were mostly developed in the last century. Only four of the world’s top 50 tech companies are European,” she said.
“Unlike in the past, Europe is no longer at the forefront of progress. Our productivity growth – the key factor driving our long-term prosperity – is diverging from the US.”
On top of that come trade wars, and the cost of military wars with Russia the most immediate threat, for which the continent is under-prepared.
As Lagarde notes, it was only wealth that generated the taxes to pay for Europe’s welfare states in the first place.
The sun is setting on European-style welfarism. Sir Keir must take note – growth has to come first.

One of the surest arguments that capitalism is an unsustainable nightmare that destroys innovation is the way it's made it impossible to create an effective education system. We've made it financially impossible for most people to let their kids succeed academically.
Illinois just passed a law making it mandatory that all kindergarten is now a full-day program. Most already are. This is being hailed as a huge win for low income working families, and it is... But it's a huge loss for kids. Full day kindergarten means no naps. We have strong evidence that most children still need daily naps at age 5. "But they can stay awake just fine!" you may think, but it's not about that. Sleep is the time when our brains convert short term memory to long term memory, and kids 5 and under have reduced short term memory capacity. If they don't get a midday nap, anything they learn in the morning can be lost. Naps are critical for learning.
In fact, most kids are done napping earlier than that, either in preschool or daycare, because it's incredibly difficult for childcare programs to get a bunch of ambulatory, verbal kids to nap all together in one space. It's too noisy, too disruptive. The bedding takes up too much space. So they don't do naps, and their 3 and 4 year olds lose their morning learning. Half of their days. Because their parents have to work all day. Because their schools can't afford adequate napping space and their parents can't afford schools that can.
We know that early childhood education is one of the most important indicators of long-term academic success. Kids that can't nap will learn less in preschool and kindergarten and start first grade behind where they should be. That deficit will follow them, compounded by the other structural issues of capitalism and its effects on our schools and will create less effective workers for the capitalist machine. And so the machine breaks down because we couldn't adapt it to the schedules of 5-year-old brains.
