Mary Bell

*This story is real and quite graphic, telling of the murders committed by Mary and her friend Norma Bell. (No relation.) It contains details and mentions of abuse, mutilation, and the killings of two young boys. Reader discretion is advised.*

Mary Bell was born in England on May 26th, 1957, to a sixteen year old sex worker named Betty McCrickett. She was physically and mentally abused by her mother when she wasn’t away on “business” in Glasgow. Her mother tried to give her away to a woman trying to adopt, but her sister foiled her attempts. Allegedly, Mary was prostituted at the age of 4, according to Mary herself.

Murder of Martin Brown:

The day before she turned 11, Mary strangled 4 year old Martin Brown to death in an abandoned house in Scottswood, England. She returns to the scene of the crime with her friend Norma Bell, only to discover two boys were there and stumbled upon the body.

There were no signs of violence except a bit of bit of blood and saliva on the victim’s face. They found an empty bottle of painkillers next to his body as well and ruled his death an accident. Mary Bell showed up days later at their doorstep asking to see the boy’s coffin, his mother slammed the door in his face.

She and Norma broke into a nursery and left notes, claiming responsibility for his murder and stating they’d kill again. Police thought it was a morbid prank. The girls were caught loitering outside the school but were left off the hook. Mary bragged about killing Martin Brown, but nobody her due to her reputation as a show-off and a liar until another boy turned up dead.

Murder of Brian Howe:

On July 31st, Mary strangled 3 year old Brian Howe with the help of Norma and mutilated his thighs and penis with scissors. They aided Howe’s sister in search of him in the neighborhood. Mary pointed out the concrete blocks that hid his body, but Norma said he wouldn’t be there, so she moved on.

When his body was found, police interviewed local children, hoping for a lead. The coroner discovered an M carved on Howe’s torso, and the lack of force in the attack led them to believe the killer was a child. Norma was excited and Mary evasive when they were interviewed by the police, pointing out Mary was seen with Brian the day of his death.

Mary lurked outside Brian’s house on the day of his burial, laughing and rubbing her hands together. She was interviewed again, where she made up a story of an 8 year old boy hitting Brian and carrying around a pair of scissors. This was her mistake as that detail wasn’t revealed to the public. The girls broke down upon further questioning and tried to throw each other under the bus.

Trial and sentencing:

The jury agreed Mary Bell was responsible for the murders and was found guilty in December. She was charged with manslaughter on account of “typical symptoms of psychopathy” and could not be fully held responsible for her actions. Norma Bell was acquitted due to be an unwilling accomplice under a bad influence.

12 years after given an indeterminate sentence, she was released in 1980 after rehabilitation and served her sentence under license, living in the community with strict probation. She was given a new identity and protection by the British government.

Still, newspapers and tabloids hounded her, so she moved several times. Bell gave birth to her daughter in 1984 who found out of her mother’s murders when she was 14. They continue to live out their lives in anonymity at a secret address along with her common law husband.

Court rulings protecting the identity of certain convicts are unofficially called “Mary Bell orders.”

17-Year-Old Girl Stabbed To Death In Queens; 15-Year-Old Girl Charged With Murder –New York City reporting

Surveillance video showed two people in shorts – who appeared to be teenage girls – about to cross Queens Boulevard.

One girl wearing dark sneakers is seen crouching, appearing to pick up something from the ground and rummaging through her belongings.▶︎ A fight appeared to break out between the two while they were in the crosswalk — just as their faces were off-camera. What sparked the fight wasn't known.◀︎

Officers found the teenage victim stabbed in the neck. She was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Police later identified the victim as Sara Rivera, who lived with her family on 96th Street in Jackson Heights.

The other girl in dark sneakers was seen on video running away on Queens Boulevard, but the teenager was caught taken into custody at the scene.

Police later said the 15-year-old, who was not immediately identified due to her age, was charged with second-degree murder and fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon.

Her relationship to Rivera wasn't clear.▶︎ An ex-boyfriend of Rivera's told NBC New York that she had been friends with the suspect, but they had a spotty relationship — though he said he never imagined it would end in such a violent manner.◀︎

Nex Benedict was a indigenous trans nonbinary teenager. Their head was beaten against the floor in a bathroom stall. Less than 24 hours later, they died, most likely from undiagnosed head trauma. Conservatives say they want to, "protect the children", where was the protection for Nex? That's the thing. There wasn't any. Nex died. And many more trans, queer, and nonbinary minors will if we don't step up and do something. What happened to Nex has and will happen to queer folk around the globe. Say their name.

People seem to think this is fake because it's written in English. Apart from the racism in believing that Arab doctors and nurses aren't fluent in English (a second or official language for half of Asia), Palestinians have deliberately been addressing their audience in English on every social media, from journalists to children, because they know speaking English to Westerners immediately makes people more human in their eyes. Because language is one of the ways the imperial cultural hegemony conditions us (yes, everyone in the world) to see who qualifies as "people" and who are simply a mass of bodies who were always made to suffer and die. Gazans know this deeply, which is why they have been using English to beg and plead through social media, "We're not numbers! We're not numbers! We're people like you, we speak your language, we deserve to live!" all the while they're systematically slaughtered.

Israeli forces also encircled Al Shifa Hospital yesterday and bombed it for several hours while shooting dead anyone trying to flee including medical staff moving between buildings. Not sure whether it's still continuing because WHO lost all communications with its staff there a few hours after. The last new report said that thirty-nine babies had been removed from the incubators before the power went out. It's extremely unlikely they will survive.

Please understand that these atrocities depend on the war of attrition between governments and public attention. The momentum of public outcry is difficult to sustain through repeated stonewalling and bureaucratic intractability. When we're flooded with these reports and a sense of futility and despair replaces the anger, it allows compassion fatigue to set in and the violence to become normalized. Massacring hospitals, killing sick children and openly targeting humanitarian aid workers (Netanyahu just declared the UNRWA is in league with Hamas) will become simply more news articles that fade into the background, and open genocides will soon become part of the "lesser evil".

Take care of yourselves how you can, take distance where needed, but please never tune out and give up on the two million people for whom we are the only witness and hope. Never stop boosting and sharing the news and posts you find, never stop getting out there and joining every protest you can, however small. Anger burns out, which is why activism must depend on an immovable sense of justice and uncompromising value for human life. It's not just about Gaza, it's about the kind of evil our generation will be coerced into accepting as unchangeable and inevitable hereafter.

shit is bad in the UK but obviously it is immensly confusing and I know some people wouldn't want to search up the news given how volatile it is, so here is a timeline of events. warnings for talk of violence, child death, racism, police ect

Monday 29/07: mass stabbing occured in Southport at a kids dance class, three girls died on scene, several others were hospitalised. An at time unnamed 17 y old boy was arrested on suspicion, and a knife was seized. later

Tuesday 30/07: having read false news suggesting that the attacker was a muslim immigrant who had arrived on a small boat, far-right groups with links to the EDL their leader Tommy Robinson took to the internet to imply the attacker was Muslim attacked a mosque in Southport, and after being declared a public disturbance, the police showed up and started trying to disperse them. This very quickly spiralled into a riot in which 39 police were hospitalised. Also on this day, Nigel fucking Farage, leader of far-right party Reform UK tweeted a video in which asked if the police were lying that the attack was not "terror related", furthering belief that the attacker was Muslim

Wednesday 31/07: violent anti immigrant protest continued, and there were mass riots in London. The PM spoke out denouncing the far right rioters as "violent thugs who would feel the full force of the law"

Thursday 01/08 : to try and curb the spread of misinformation, the police released the identity of their suspect - Axel Rudakubana, born in Cardiff to Rwandan parents in hope that the confirmation that he is not a Muslim immigrant would stop the rioting. It has not. PM Starmer released a statement saying that these were "coordinated attacks by the far right. " and that "this is not a protest that got out of hand these are individuals bent on violence"

Friday Night 02/08: Riots started in Sunderland late at night with reports of "serious violence". Starmer announced he had a plan to tackle far right violence.

Saturday 03/08: New far right mob action started in Manchester, Bristol, Hull, Belfast, Stoke, and Nottingham. Nottingham saw the first counterprotest, and as I write this, clashes between antifacist protestors and the far right is on going. The racists are setting fire to migrant housing buildings and attacking both police and counterprotestors countrywide. Dispersal orders have been issued for every city centre and major town centre across the UK.

Sunday 04/08: a "nick em quick" approach is to be used against the rioters in a hope to remove the far right mob from the street as soon as possible. There have been over 100 arrests. There are no plans to bring in the army, say ministers. There is a current attack on a migrant housing building in Rotherham.

I will keep posting updates as this unfolds so watch this space. This is obviously terrifying, so I want you to focus on actionable points.

“Who?” Tim wasn’t the only one to startle, seeing as Bruce had practically froze, a downturn to his lips in a silent show of confusion. 

Damian scowled. “Are you deaf Drake? Grandmother is coming to Gotham to, quote, make sure I am being properly cared for.” None of them had known that Ras was with anyone actually. At least Tim was pretty sure that would have been in the files. 

“Oh?” Dick didn’t quite crouch to Damian’s height but it was a near thing. “She-” “He,” Damian corrected, interrupting him. They all exchanged a glance before Dick continued. 

“Is he coming to the Manor or…” 

Damian scoffed again, a tiny bit of a flush against his face. “No, Grandmother will most likely be staying with Akhi-”
