Waitress – West End || 10-8-2019
So last week I went to Waitress, and it was a pretty eventful show! So here’s what happened plus some of my thoughts about the show itself.
I already knew the music really well, and had watched a bootleg of the original cast like 2 years ago, but can’t remember much of it.
Our cast was:
 Jenna ~ Lucie Jones
Becky ~ Charlotte Riby
Dawn ~ Ashley Roberts
Dr Pomatter ~ David Hunter
Ogie ~ Blake Harrison
Earl ~ Peter Hannah
Joe ~ Shaun Prendergast
Cal ~ Stephen Leask
Nurse Norma ~ Kelly Agbowu
-  At the end of the show Lucie held a speech and told us that it was Ashley and Shaun’s last show, which explains why they’re pictures and CV’s weren’t on the programme, but on separate sheets of paper. The whole speech was so sweet and you could tell the cast was just one big family.
- The lobby smelled like pies yesss
- I will forever stan the turn off your phone song
- I totally forgot how funny this show is, cause like it is marketed as a musical comedy, but some of the songs are so emotional I was like naah it’s not a comedy, but watching it I see I was wrong
- David Hunter (who I’ve seen before in Kinky Boots) has such great comedic timing, like in general Dr Pomatter is such a funny character I love him
- Ogie really looked like Josh Groban and it confused me lol
- LUCIE JONES IS SO AMAZING SHE IS SO IN CONTROL OF HER VOICE AND SHE’S JUST A JOY TO LISTEN TO AND HER RIFFS AND HER BELT AND HER HEAD VOICE I’M IN LOVE I KNOW I’M BIASED BECAUSE I’VE SEEN HER LIVE BUT SHE IS HONESTLY THE BEST JENNA I’VE HEARD
- So I’ve seen this mentioned before on Tumblr, but during Bad Idea they sing “It’s the only thing I’ve never/I’ve ever done” and I really wanna know what they mean by that. Has Dr Pomatter cheated more than once or is it talking about something else?
- In the break I had a pie, so I can now cross that off my bucket list. I also took the pot home because I am a hoarder of anything to do with musicals
- Charlotte (who played Becky) was an understudy and her rendition of I Didn’t Plan it was so good, like HER BELT. In general I think we need more understudy (and swing) appreciation in musical theatre because whenever I’ve seen an understudy they’re just so amazing and they work so hard
- There was a little reprise of (I think it was) What’s Inside, which isn’t on the cast album so I was shook
- During Bad Idea (reprise) Dr Pomatter’s coat fell off the door in time with the music (right before she said “The dark dark chocolate pie” and Lucie and David just broke and Lucie couldn’t say her line for like 20 seconds cause she was just laughing and the whole audience lost it and I was crying of laughter and in the next scene everyone (including Lucie) was still giggling
- Right before You Matter to Me someone made a weird sound (Maybe it was a burp or something idk) but me and my brother both lost it, and we were really trying to hold back our laughter cause it was an emotional moment, so I’m sorry to anyone around us who heard our held back snorts
- I find Earl a really interesting character, cause he’s deifinitely abusive, but it’s because of his own insecurities (which is what is mostly the case with abusers) and how much does he mean what he’s saying (about her being the only thing he ever loved) and how much is he just saying it to manipulate her? I think it really make Jenna’s emotional turmoil about leaving him even more poignant
- During She Used to be Mine I was SOBBING
- Right as the last scene between Dr Pomatter and Jenna started there was wolf whistling from the crowd and then loads of people started talking. Lucie and David then walked off stage and there was a doctor called up. Then they announced they were having technical difficulties and had to pause the show. After 10 minutes or so they announced someone had had a medical problem but could now resume the show. After the show there was an ambulance outside so I hope the person was ok
- Anyway back to the last bit of the show
- I’m amazed at how the actors went straight back into their performance with perfect concentration as if nothing had happened, they really know how to deal with this sort of thing
- I honestly wonder what Dr Pomatter does after Jenna leaves him, does he tell his wife about his affair or not? And if he does what is her reaction?
- At the end the whole cast was hugging and dancing and I love that so much
Anyway I advise everyone to go see this joyous (although sometimes heartbreaking) show, especially while Lucie Jones is still in it cause she is AMAZING. And if you don’t have the chance you should at least give the cast album a listen if you haven’t already!
