random thoughts about great comet @ donmar

getting this out of the way early: yes, the costumes were underwhelming, mainly natasha's everyday dress, pierre, marya, and sonya. i liked natasha's ball dress and sonya's opera dress was okay, mary and prince bolkonsky's were fine (big fan of mary's big crucifix!), and the outfits worked much better for anatole's crew

i do wish they had used more props at times, but overall i liked the set, especially the clubby parts. also that pole with dolokhov (and sometimes anatole) going up and down it was fun. the lighting was delightful and i loved the lightbulbs they installed in between the seats

the duel and preparations/balaga/the abduction were my favourites, and the small audience participation moments there were quite fun :) also it's now "goodbye my moonlight lovers"

maimuna memon was fantastic, sonya alone and natasha very ill made me cry. really enjoyed watching her face journey throughout sonya & natasha. sonya alone got such loud applause <3

very much enjoyed chumisa dornford-may as natasha, she did amazingly portraying her youth and naïveté, especially during the more argumentative bits (natasha & the bolkonskys, sonya & natasha, in my house). a little thing that i loved was the highlighter/glitter by her inner eyes and down her face during pierre & natasha, combined with her acting it genuinely made her look like she was sobbing actual tears

oh jamie muscato. i kinda thought "oh i know natasha's young, but how does she fall for him like this, come onnn," but now i get it, he has little bits of vulnerability (?) and awkwardness that shine through his charm and confidence and make him so much more loveable. pierre & anatole was one of my favourite anatole parts since you could really see him going through so many emotions. liked his delivery of "lend me fifty rubles 😏?"

i loved dolokhov, his costume and his constant high energy were great, always moving, climbing, dancing, he was such a vibe and so much fun! also he went to high five the centre front row and no one took him up on it, he did get it from another audience member and had this "there we goooo 😏" look which made me giggle

genuinely don't think this is an issue due to declan bennett, but rather owing to the directing, but dust and ashes didn't hit me as i thought it would, and also slightly disappointed during a call to pierre, when it builds up to "natasha and anatole kuragin!! // WHAT?!?!" that fell a bit flat for me

related to this, during pierre & anatole, when pierre sings "i seize him by the collar" there's no collar seizing happening, and while i don't think every single lyrical stage direction needs to be performed, it did bother me then as it toned the moment down so much

eta: kept thinking about annette mclaughlin and realised it was very unfair and harsh of me to imply i didn't like her performance when i was really thinking of literally just a couple of very specific moments that were different to what i expected. honestly her marya was fantastic, really well acted

chloe saracco, cedric neal, cat simmons, and eugene mccoy were really good and fun to watch as well, and while i had limited view of the balcony from my seat, what i could see for the opera was entrancing

the great comet of 1812 made me cry, already said the lighting was beautiful, but i especially liked its use here. the harmonies were gorgeous and gave me literal shivers

overall i had a lot of fun, haven't stopped talking about it, will be going again!

Ghost Quartet!

I don’t even know how to begin (see what I did there?)

Honestly, I was so shocked a few months ago when I was googling “when will great comet come to London?” and instead found out ghost quartet was coming. I was so excited and booked myself a single ticket immediately (who cares if I see it alone? It’s ghost quartet)

The show was staged in the round on this reflective gold stage. So yes, it was very funny when they said “this is a circular story”. Second in terms of circle puns only to the one in The Band’s Visit

As I sat down, in my great comet t-shirt (I don’t have a ghost quartet one :( ) with a red flower in my hair and a star necklace, I looked around to see if I could spot any other fans. There was an old man in a bear t-shirt and a group of girls next to me talking very loudly about Dave Malloy, but I suspected a lot of people had no idea what it was about. What a surprise they were in for.

Littered all over the stage were various objects which I spotted throughout the show which were all symbolic. There was a copy of The Fall of the House of Usher, a camel figurine, a book with the Lady of the Lake raising Excalibur on the cover and a model train on the desk. I also spotted a Sandman comic and I’m still trying to figure out what that was about.

So the performers came out onstage and welcomed us in their own voices before beginning singing in American accents (except for the actor playing the Bear who was an adorable Italian man who kept his own accent). I do wonder why they did this. At times it felt like they were trying to imitate the exact speech of the original cast but they still gave great performances.

During The Camera Shop, I noticed the white fiddle hanging from the wall and honestly my jaw dropped.

Also for “a photograph of a ghost” there was this flash over the whole stage like the flash of a camera. Amazing.

Starchild reached into a box and pulled out a star shaped lamp. It was beautiful and she strung it up to the ceiling where it hung for the rest of the show.

Subway was one of the highlights of the show. It was just such high energy.

In Soldier & Rose, there was this warm yellow lighting with a filter that created a honeycomb effect across the stage.

I got to shake some bells during Any Kind of Dead Person. Also, both Rose and Pearl were singing the solos in this song and alternating between verses which was interesting.

They actually did hand out whiskey during Four Friends. I thought this was just a myth but no, they did. Unfortunately I didn’t get any because even though I’m nineteen, I have a baby face and look about fifteen. One of the actors came towards me and then hesitated and passed it to the person behind me lol.

Okay for The Telescope, the telescope on the stage was spinning and it was great.

Lights Out was very funny when I realized what the lyrics were referring to. See there was a “full blackout” except there was still light from all the various bits of tech and from the tech people standing at the back. So that’s what all the “little lights” were.

Yes, Maimuna Memon who played Pearl did the pterodactyl screeching and I liked it because it was her own version of it. There was a flashing light on her which suggested it was the scream Pearl made as she was hit by the train.

I cried during Hero. Not sure why but I think the lyrics just resonated with me somehow. No one does an existential crisis like Dave Malloy.

Um during The Wind and the Rain, I was the first person to be called up to play instruments on the stage! I was beaming and so tempted to sing along but knew that would be bad. It turns out I’m terrible at playing the drums and couldn’t keep the rhythm going at first but eventually I managed it.

We continued playing the instruments as the cast left and I wanted to keep on playing for as long as possible because I’d heard that happens in some productions, but then there was a blackout and the cast came back out.
