charthur in canon context is just so devastating. imagine being charles, after years alone in the wilderness, trying to learn how to engage with people, let alone a group of people, for the first time in decades, and meeting arthur. arthur, who is massive, with an uncanny dead-eyed stare, and gets treated like a dumb workhorse.

but the second they meet arthur is respectfully enamored. charles, who likes people more when they're not talking blah blah, finds himself absolutely rambling the second they're alone because arthur listens and immediately accepts things charles tells him at face value. arthur, who had only learned about how much bison meant to native people hours ago, kills a poacher not (only) because charles encouraged it but because he genuinely believed that the poacher deserved to die

arthur, who has the self-awareness to know they're not good people, and thinks of himself as the lowest of low, tells charles with utmost sincerity that charles is one of the best people he knows. arthur, who throws himself into a firefight to protect a german man he hadn't even really wanted to rescue at the start. arthur, who wants to show off how much he's been using the tracking skills charles taught him. charles being sent out to find arthur because mr 'i'm a bad man' has been missing for three weeks and he's in the swamps up to his waist in mud looking for flowers because a dude he's met twice before asked him nicely. he's forgotten to eat for four days but his white horse is still brushed so spectacularly clean that charles saw her first.

charles catching himself hugging onto arthur a little too long when arthur arrives in lakay. he'll figure out what that feeling is later. charles, constantly torn between encouraging arthur to rest as he starts to get sick and needing him because he knows arthur's smart, he knows arthur thinks what dutch is doing with the wapiti people is wrong. charles realizing arthur trusts him so completely he admits he's dying, and rides quietly listening to the morbid assurance that at least he knows how much time he has left to live a better life like it's exactly what he needed to hear

then having to be the one to say no when arthur offers to stay and help too after the death of eagle flies. because it doesn't make sense. arthur's sick and the wapiti people are already vulnerable. because he knows arthur, and arthur wouldn't be able to live with himself for whatever time he has left if he doesn't try to save as many of the gang, his family, as he can. realizing he doesn't want to be saying no, like the word suddenly burns his in throat and chokes him. because he loves him. holding arthur one last time, knowing better than to hope it isn't the last time he sees him. realizing he loves him in the same second he realizes it's goodbye.

then getting to see him, hold him, one last time, as he carries his corpse to a pretty hillside where arthur would have wanted to be.

I want to see the gang’s jaws drop when they find several wild deer napping by Arthur on a tree, some random stable-boy in awe as he calms the most stubborn horse they have. In the middle of talking to Sadie, a whole ass Eagle lands on his shoulder. He wakes up after staying in a hotel and finds and random stray kitten in his boots.

Charles: What the fuck are you doing?

1. U.S. judge blocks Florida ban on care for trans minors in narrow ruling, says ‘gender identity is real’

A federal judge temporarily blocked portions of a new Florida law that bans transgender minors from receiving puberty blockers, ruling Tuesday that the state has no rational basis for denying patients treatment.

Transgender medical treatment for minors is increasingly under attack in many states and has been subject to restrictions or outright bans. But it has been available in the United States for more than a decade and is endorsed by major medical associations.

2. Eagle Who Thought Rock Was an Egg Finally Gets to Be a Dad

A week after their introduction the cage where the little eaglet was put, was removed so the two could interact more closely. 4. Latest population survey yields good news for endangered vaquita porpoise

The resilient little vaquita marina appears determined to survive the illegal fishing that has brought it dangerously close to extinction, according to the latest population survey. Despite an estimated annual decline of 45% in 2018, the endangered porpoise appears to be holding steady over the last five years, according to a report published Wednesday by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

5. 'Extinct' butterfly species reappears in UK

The species, previously described as extinct in Britain for nearly 100 years, has suddenly appeared in countryside on the edge of London. Small numbers of black-veined whites have been spotted flying in fields and hedgerows in south-east London. First listed as a British species during the reign of King Charles II, they officially became extinct in Britain in 1925.

This month they have mysteriously appeared among their favourite habitat: hawthorn and blackthorn trees on the edge of London, where I and other naturalists watched them flitting between hedgerows.

6. Colombian is a hero in Peru: he rescued 25 puppies that were about to die in a fire

During a structural fire that occurred in a residential area of ​​Lima in Peru, a young Colombian became a hero. Description of the tree that grew from Willabella: Gnarled roots extend from a bulbous center. No leaves hang from its crown of branches. It is not natural. Nothing grows near it, except the apples that grow for its branches, never ripe and always rotten. A hollow in the center is swarming with spiders whose web spans across it. Several scars are evident from where the Hatchetmen, once they realized their mistake, tried to cut it down. From its branches hand charms of protection and containment that replace old ones of worship. It grows behind the old Waylon Hall, over the sight of Willabella’s execution. Like the Hall, many rumors swirl around it and foolish children often dare each other to touch the bark.

The Blade of Truth that MacNamara uses on the Sniggles is one of multiple PEIP has constructed. With help from Holloway, they were able to harness the White’s energy into physical form. Each Blade requires a secret to be whispered into it as it forms, one no one has ever heard before. If someone tells a lie while holding the Blade, it shatters.

The Foster family are descended from Willabella and a Hatchetman with the last name Forester. Willabella had no love for him and only got pregnant to delay her execution.

The Stockworth family vacations in Hatchetfield because they have connections with the Church of the Starry children. Lucy is not aware if this.

Charles Coven was part of PEIP and went by Carlo at the time.

PEIP has ID numbers based on the Stith Thompson’s Motif Index of Folk-Literature. Basically a collection of a bunch of different motifs in folklore.

Wilbur: D1310.10.1. Magic apple gives supernatural knowledge.

Holloway (Holliway this identity): G220.0.1. "Black" and "white" witches. Malevolent and benevolent.

Douglas Keane Sr. was an informant for PEIP. Basically, PEIP goes around to various people in professions where the supernatural may be encountered (law enforcement, medical, park rangers etc.) and gives them a little presentation with very vague language about if they seen anything unnatural, or out if the ordinary, to give their office a call. Since Hatchetfield is such a hotspot, Douglas knows a lot more about the supernatural than most informants do and is on first name basis with several PEIP agents. (This is heavily based off a book called The Rook by Daniel O’Malley.)

(They all had once trained and given a gift/blessing (a mutation) to Reader, but after The Fight, they rarely speak of them... no one can ever speak ill of Reader in their presence or where they can hear, lest they earn the wrath of any of them... they try to be better mentors (read: parents) to the new demigods...)

I just noticed that the common list of fairytales for "Rapunzel's evolution" is actually incomplete.

If you searched a bit about this story, you will know that it goes like this: the "Rapunzel" fairytale type is, of course, best known through the titular "Rapunzel" story told by the brothers Grimm, in the 19th century. When looking for a previous occurence of the fairytale, people usually brought forward its Italian equivalent in the Pentamerone: Basile's "Petrosinella" (Parsley), early 17th century. And recently, people have added a third story in-between the two, from the late 17th century, the French "Persinette" from mademoiselle de La Force "Les Contes des Contes", because it has been proven that the Grimm's story was influenced by a German translation/adaptation of the French fairytale, that the Grimms mistook for a genuine German story.

This list, Petrosinella-Persinette-Rapunzel is indeed, correct, as it reflects the "three big eras" of fairytales in Europe, and it presents three pretty direct variations of a same story... However the list is incomplete. Because they forgot about madame d'Aulnoy.

While yes, mademoiselle de La Force's story IS the one that directly influenced the Grimms' Rapunzel, mademoiselle de La Force stayed a somehow "secondary" author of fairy tales in France, who never had the lasting impact or fame of authors like Charles Perrault... or madame d'Aulnoy. The Perrault d'Aulnoy duo was still going very strongly by the 19th century (see the Sleeping Beauty ballet). And did madame d'Aulnoy write a Rapunzel variation? Well yes she did!

(I should say a "Maiden in the Tower" variation, because talking of a "Rapunzel variation" is an anachronism, but you know...)

In fact, d'Aulnoy's "Rapunzel" is one of her most famous stories: The White Cat. Everybody focuses on the first part of the fairytale, which is one of the most famous rendition of "The Animal Bride" fairytale type (402), but the entire second part of the story is a "Maiden in the Tower" tale with echoes to Rapunzel. A princess sold when she is born because her mother wanted to eat the fruits of an orchard belonging to fairies... The girl being raised in a doorless tower by an old, malevolent fairy she calls "Mommy"... A prince behaving as a hopeless suitor at the bottom of her tower... But with its own unique variations typical of a d'Aulnoy tale. No long hair: the fairy "mother" goes through the window on a dragon's back, and the girl must escape by secretely building a rope-ladder. The prince and the princess speak using a parrot messenger (heck, her parrot and dog pet somehow manage to perform the wedding ceremony between her and the prince in secret?). The fairies send a venomous dragon to destroy everything in the king's realm when he refuses to give up his newborn daughter ; the princess in the tower must avoid a horrible wedding to a dwarf magician with eagle's claws for feet, no bones in his legs and birds' nests in his beard...

So don't forget madame d'Aulnoy. She did Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast, even sort-of variations of Sleeping Beauty, and she also did a Rapunzel!

susan grimshaw wears victorian goth. karen wears like. trailer park trash fashion and i mean that in the highest regard. sean dresses like a cliché stoner. john,javier, and eagle flies (paytahs also there) are the emo unholy trinity. abigail dresses like its the early 2000s jean skirt and all. charles is a hoodie sweats and too many layers of clothing king. arthur dresses like hes on brokeback mountain. dutch dresses like he plays golf regularly (he doesn't). hosea dresses like the gayest theatre kid you can conceive. bill wear strictly camo cus he thinks it makes him look tough. it doesnt. reverend swanson just. dresses like a protestant preacher. uncles got that karm fit with the really questionable graphic tee and sports cap. lenny wears 90s preppy style but not. white 90s preppy style. prince of bel aire. to me. 90s sitcom fashion. marybeth wears strictly vintage and frequents any yard sale and flea market. tilly wears hand-me-downs but she makes them look cool and sows patches n shit onto them. like. the cool patched shit you find at thrift shops. kieran just wears the ideal dysphoria/depression fit. strauss is a proud old man clothing wearer. he still dresses like its 1950. pearson just dresses like a 1980s dad with his many patterned sweaters and khaki shorts. trelawny only dresses in the most disgustin gaudy eyebleed fashion known to man. and his bath robes are extravagant and layered. micah dresses like eminem but he looks so fucking cringe and stupid. his ankle moniter doesnt help either. molly exists solely in cozy wear and flowey skirts. and platform heels. sadie wears exclusively mens clothing but also like 70s mens work wear and also always dresses like shes on brokeback mountain. like the butch she is.

Theios Aner, or Ancient Magic in Antiquity

Sometimes I get really curious about the sources the writers for HL used to get inspiration for Hogwarts Legacy and Ancient Magic.

For instance, I was doing some research into magical practice in ancient civilisations to see if we can find traces of some of the very first known wizards for the HP universe and I stumbled upon about a group of people in ancient Greece called ‘theios aner’ (θεῖος ἀνήρ) which is translated to ‘divine men’. The definition for these theios aner given by Wikipedia is:

Person connected to the gods, which grants them the ability to perform miracles and supernatural events.

And, think about it!, if we just replace "the gods" in that sentence with "ancient magic" we get a description that fits our MC and the abilities they get from their strange connection to AM. So I started to wonder: are the theios aner some of the very first known ancient magic wielders?

One of the earliest exemple of one of these ‘divine men’ is Pythagoras of Samos, born 570 BCE. Many miracles have been attributed to him, including:

Being seen in two different cities (Metapontum in Italy and Tauromenium in Sicily) on the same day, conversing with friends

Having tamed a savage bear by the power of his voice alone and converting it to vegetarianism

Stopping an ox from eating beans

A white eagle coming down onto his shoulder so Pythagoras could pet it

Biting a venomous snake to death

The river Caicasus calling to him "Hail, Pythagoras!" as he was passing over it with some friends

Having a thigh made of gold

Predicting that a dead man would be found on a ship entering the harbour

What struck when reading this list of ‘miracles’ is that, if we try to explain each of these by a magical discipline we know from the Wizarding World we get:

Time-travel (being present in two cities at the same time)

Care of Magical Creatures or, generally, an ability to communicate with animals (taming the bear, the ox and the eagle)

Divination (predicting the dead man)

Transfiguration (thigh made of gold and probably also biting a venomous snake to death by using self-transfiguration to change his mouth to something able to kill the snake and be immune to the venom)

(The only one difficult to explain is the one about the river calling ‘Hi!’ to him 😂. Although if we stretch it, it could also be some advanced transfiguration that changes the river into something capable of speech.)

And if we consider these 4 disciplines, we realise that they correspond exactly to the specialised skills of the four Keepers: Niamh Fitzgerald being a time-traveler (I explained here why I think that!), San Bakar teaching Care of Magical Creatures and his trial being about taming a magical creature, Percival Rackham being a seer and Charles Rookwood teaching transfiguration.

Cue the famous meme!

I’ve always found Bakar’s ability and his trial to be very random after the sophisticated dungeons we had to go through for the other Keepers, but if we consider that the writers of HL took inspiration from the the ancient theois aner as the originals wielders of Ancient Magic and that the 4 disciplines highlighted are at the core of the abilities granted to a wizard by Ancient Magic, then suddenly his trial makes sense!

[And, if you would allow me a completely crazy tangent here!, I just realized that the only 3 ‘special abilities’ we know of in the Wizarding world, i.e. Metamorphmagi, true Seers and Parselmouths, just happen to correspond to 3 of the 4 Ancient Magic disciplines! And for the metamorphmagi and parselmouths, it’s not just any type of transfiguration ability or ability to care for animals, it’s specifically self-transfiguration and an ability to talk to animals, which are exactly what Pythagoras was known to be able to do! Is that a coincidence?🤯😵 Could we imagine that over time some of the ‘Ancient Magic abilities’ got passed down into the blood of ‘regular’ wizards to become rare inheritable traits? The exception here being time-travel since we don’t know of anyone having a natural ability to time-travel. But time-travel could be an exception since I don’t think Niamh Fitzgerald herself is able to time-travel, she still uses an old version of a time-turner that she wears around her neck, but maybe she has a special ability that makes her immune to the effects of time-travel (we see these ageing effects with Prof Hecat)? And since in 1899 time-travel becomes heavily restricted, anyone having special time-travel abilities would not even know it! Anyway, food for though! And now back to our regularly scheduled programming!]

And the parallels don’t stop there! I’m basing myself here mostly on the Wikipedia page for Magic in the Greco-Roman world since I haven’t had time to do extensive research on the lives each of the other known theois aner. But the amount of parallels between the game and the Wikipedia article is still interesting if we try to find possible sources of inspiration for the HL writers who may have read the same article.

Empedocles was also considered one of the theios aner and he followed Pythagoras' philosophy. Here’s what the Wikipedia article says about him:

Empedocles (c. 490 – c. 430 BCE) too has ascribed to him marvelous powers associated with later magicians: that is, he is able to heal the sick, rejuvenate the old, influence the weather and summon the dead. […] It is important to note that after Empedocles, the scale of magical gifts in exceptional individuals shrinks in the literature, becoming specialized. Individuals might have the gift of healing, or the gift of prophecy, but are not usually credited with a wide range of supernatural powers as are magoi like Orpheus, Pythagoras and Empedocles.

And does that not remind you of someone? Someone who wanted to heal the sick and after whose death the practice of Ancient Magic was significantly changed to become much more restricted, with very few even knowing what Ancient Magic even is?

I don’t know if I’m the only one but the story of Pythagoras and Empedocles (as it is presented in the wikipedia article at least) reminds me of Isidora and the Keepers. Some ‘dark magic’ practices are attributed to Empedocles (summoning the dead), like the ‘dark magic’ practices of Isidora who siphons emotions out of people, and after their death some aspect of the practice of Ancient Magic is lost, with either Ancient Magic wielders (or theios aner) becoming way less powerful or the Keepers locking Ancient Magic away permanently.

If we accept that the ancient theios aner have indeed been used as inspiration for the Ancient Magic wielders, it could be a sort of ‘history repeating itself’ scenario where at several points of history some theios aner abused their tremendous power to do some things considered unnatural or dangerous (summoning the dead, taking away people’s pain) and when that happened other theios aner (perhaps organised into a secret Society for Ancient Magic?) stepped in and placed regulations and restrictions on the use of Ancient Magic, such as dividing the foundational ‘Ancient Magic Powers’ (i.e. time-travel, divination, transfiguration and a connection to animals) among four different Ancient Magic users and not permitting anyone to wield all four together, or, in the Keepers’ time, hiding Ancient Magic away altogether and not permitting anyone to learn it anymore.

james- I think he'd be a big fan of all the music of the now and maybe 10 ish years earlier. lots of sixties duwopy pop-rock like the beatles, the zombies and the turtles but also more contemporary stuff; Fleetwood Mac, Wings, the Pretty Things, Frank Zappa, the Eagles, Queen and Bowie (not glam, disco. so like thin white Duke era- not that he'd mind glam bowie I just think he'd prefer disco bowie)! also I think like Ambrosia and other 70s pop he'd dig.. but I think he would be totally in love with Fleetwood Mac, especially their album Mystery to Me- because it would remind him of lily. lily - I think she'd really prefer 50s rock and jazz .. blues and soul too, though I don't think she'd mind later rock. she just seems very buddy holly/chet baker/frank sinatra/ray charles/ella fitzgerald/nina simone, I also think she'd really like otis redding but he's 60s lol, oh and I think she would've LOVED the monkees when she wad younger and would think theyre brilliant.

sirius - glam glam glam and then also punk from the late 70s-81.. also goth+post punk music (ie. the cure, echo and the bunnymen, the smiths, siouxsie and the banshees, depeche mode, joy division ect ect) but I always think of goth as sort of a mid-late 80s thing so I don't think he'd have really been exposed to alot of goth bands because he was. in jail... but I think David Bowie, T. Rex, Lou Reed, the Velvet Underground, and then like Television, Patti Smith, the Clash, Iggy Pop, the Stooges. yk.. but also a lot of what James listens to as well!:3 bc they r bff! also I think remus and sirius share great love for queen :)

I think he'd like a lot of the glam sirius listens to and I think he'd be a very big velvet underground fan. as for folk, I think Bob Dylan, Vashti Bunyan, Donovan, Buffy Sainte-Marie, Janis Ian, Simon and Garfunkle, GEORGE HARRISON!! - that sort of vibe.. also also think he'd share folky stuff with lily and she would rather enjoy it !

peter - I don't think he really listens to music tbh, not in the way where he'd have favourites. just whatever is on the radio/the records his friends play!

regulus - lots of classical and jazz, but not in the way severus is like pretentious, I mean coming from a muscianship standpoint. I think he'd especially love miles davis jazz wise and beethoven+liszt classical music wise (ie. I think he'd have a great love for romantic music, even though beethoven isn't usually considered romantic- just LISTEN to moonlight sonata, it is DRIPPING with the emotion of romantic music).
