I am once again petitioning for more characters with glasses. Our eyes are not getting better in the future with even more people needing visual aids and I'd like to see myself represented more, not just in the occasional "nerdy" character.

Writing Characters with Glasses
Tumblr media
Glasses are one of those components in writing that one just knows whether the writer has any experience with or not from the offset. So how do we write glasses-wearing characters or characters with impaired vision?
What is your character's eye strength?
Tumblr media
Now, you don't have to know your character's exact diagnoses but you should know what sightedness your character has. Near-sighted means your character has trouble seeing things far way but can see things up close. Far-sightedness means a character can see things better in the distance than they can in before them.
Typically, one eye can be weaker or stronger than another, so a lense may be slightly thicker or slimmer than the other. Myself, my left eye is much weaker than my right.
Wearing Glasses
Tumblr media
Typically when you wear glasses, you start to ignore the frames in your peripheral vision, however if you may notice it more if you haven't been wearing your glasses for a while.
Also when you change lenses, your sight is funny for a while. Things, like the fucking ground itself, seem a lot closer which can lead you to feel very disoriented. Its best to break glasses in gradually, in the words of Our Lady, Theresa Manion, "Do not make unnecessary journeys, do not take risks on treacherous roads..."
Glasses can get dirty and smudged very easily and do require cleaning. You may often see somebody wipe their glasses with their shirt tail but this isn't always effective, some fabrics just worsen the issue. Dry tissue paper is the best or a glass cloth. Frames also should be cleaned too.
Glasses tend to fog up when it rains, when you sweat or when you're somewhere steamy or drinking/eating something really hot. It can be a nuisance but it usually won't impair your vision that much.
Glasses can strain your eyes and start to chafe after a while. Long periods of wearing glasses can make your eyes start to ache (it always happens to me) and the best thing to do is just remove them and rest your eyes. The frames can also rub against the tops of your ears or the bridge of your nose.
People who need glasses tend not to remove them very often. If your vision is very bad, you won't be whipping your glasses off at every opportunity like Horatio Caine. If you only need reading glasses or need glasses for specific tasks you, wouldn't wear them 24/7 as it can further damage your eyes (I did this and now I can barely see 4ft ahead of me).
You can do tasks without your glasses but you do feel more cautious, especially if you have difficulty making out details. Glasses usually make you more comfortable in situations.
And as for the whole pushing up glasses when they slip (and they do slip but gradually), there's no right way or wrong way. Personally, I adjust by moving the entire frame between my thumb and forefinger so I don't smudge the lense. But pushing it up by the bar that crosses your nose is also effective.
When you're not wearing glasses
Tumblr media
Not wearing glasses isn't delibiltating if your character's sight isn't majorly mad. As I mentioned before, they can still carry out tasks. But not wearing glasses can leave you a little unsure and sometimes disoriented.
Most people can still see without glasses, things just aren't as focused. For me, things get very fuzzy especially if they are far away but I can still make out the shape - for example, I can see how many fingers you're holding up but not your ring. I can do a lot of tasks without glasses.
When you're not wearing your glasses, you do tend to squint which can help you see a little better or tend to lift things to your eyes to see them better.
Characters wearing glasses
Tumblr media
If your character loses their glasses in a fight, they won't be unable to fight back. They can likely still see some things.
Glasses hurt when knocked from your face, you can cut or bruise from a blow to the glasses. (it's happened to me which is why I have a massive scar on my forehead).
Your character will likely dislike going to the optician. Getting your eyes looked into by a stranger with a torch is irritating. Buying new glasses is a long drawn out hellish experience.
Breaking your glasses will upset your character, mainly because they're expensive. A character may opt to get the glasses fixed instead of replaced.
Your character will keep their glasses near at all times. Sleeping, they will be in reach. In the shower, they will be somewhere close by. Glasses may your more confident in your ability so they will always be near.
Also your character will likely not store their glasses in a pocket (they can break) or on their heads (your hair can smudge the lenses).
If your character has one of those early 2000s rom-com moments where their glasses are removed so the world can see their "true beauty", yeah that isn't a thing. Now that person can't fucking see.
Also, your character will likely hate anybody grabbing their glasses or wanting to try them on.

Some notes for anyone writing a character with glasses, from someone who wears glasses everyday:
- glasses need to come off before changing a shirt, unless it has a really big collar. Otherwise, glasses will get ripped off by said shirt collar.
- weather will affect how well you can see out of them, especially rain. Raindrops will dot glasses and it’s like trying to drive a car in the rain without working windshield wipers. Snow sometimes does this too, but not as bad, and lots of dust kicking up will make glasses dirty and foggy. If it’s humid enough (talking like swampy, Deep South levels, weather app says “90-100% humidity”), glasses will fog up when you step outside. If it’s crazy windy, glasses can fly off and the character should hold onto them or take them off and put them somewhere safe. They’ll usually get dirty or break in a pants pocket, so maybe have character carry around a sturdy glasses case if needed.
- not all materials are good for wiping glasses off. Some shirt materials just make it worse.
- if your character’s glasses are super dirty or smudged, they will be able to see it 24/7 as they look around and it’s annoying af.
- although glasses can keep things from getting in a character’s eyes (like something that’s been sprayed), it doesn’t protect our eyes all the time, especially if it’s coming at an angle or there’s a large amount. For that, you’d need actual safety glasses or goggles (and yes, they do make prescription goggles, but they’re not cheap).
- speaking of waves, for the love of god, DO NOT have your character swim with their glasses on. At best, they’ll get wet and they won’t be able to see. At worst, if they’re forced underwater or an ocean wave smacks them in the face, they’ll fly off and/or break.
- a crack in glasses is actually annoying af and makes it very hard to see.
- if a character’s face is wet, like from sweat or a ton of rain, their glasses will continuously slide down their nose and they’ll need to keep pushing them back up.
- lots of liquids other than water will make glasses opaque.
- glasses should be fitted pretty well to a person’s head. So if the character’s face is dry or there’s a moderate amount of wind, the “legs” that go behind their ears should be tight enough that they don’t just constantly fly off or slip down their nose. If they do, they’re too big (but obviously something a tornado will make them fly off).
- although I hate the whole “they took off their glasses and now they’re a ✨ model ✨” trope, people do tend to look very different with glasses on vs off - especially a character like Harry Potter who constantly wears their glasses. It’s not unrealistic that people who don’t know the character well (or even those who do, but just aren’t as quick) won’t recognize them at first without their glasses.
- as far as I know (correct me if I’m wrong, but I’ve never been able to do this), if a lens pops out of the frames, it can’t be popped back in by non-professionals without the right tools. The glasses are just done for.
- if your character has contacts in (or this is a psa for anyone who wears contacts), DO NOT have them rub their eyes. The contact will pop out and they’re very translucent and tiny, so trust me, it will just fall and be lost forever.
- being able to see clearly out of one eye and not the other (like with a broken/missing lens or a contact falling out) causes headaches.
- glasses are expensive af in the US (idk about other places). One time when I didn’t have vision insurance, an eye exam and two frames with lenses (I have blue eyes and very extreme light sensitivity, so have to have prescription sun glasses as well as regular glasses) cost over $900USD. If you want the special frames that become tinted and basically turn into sunglasses when you walk outside, it will cost extra.
- speaking of those lenses that become tinted when you walk outside, they take awhile to fade back to normal after you go back inside. Your character needs to be prepared to still be “wearing” sunglasses for the first 5-10 minutes after they walk inside.
- if a character is wearing contacts, they can wear normal sunglasses. If not, they’ll need special prescription sunglasses to be able to see. You cannot wear prescription sunglasses with contacts in or you won’t be able to see anything. Ever tried to look through your friend’s glasses and everything’s weird and warped and giving you a headache? That’s what it will look like.
- not exactly glasses related, but people with lighter colored eyes will always have worse light sensitivity than people with darker eyes. I have very blue eyes and looking up at the sky on a sunny day will literally make me see stars, and especially if I’m driving towards the sun while it’s setting, I have to have my sunglasses on or I literally will not be able to see and tears will be leaking out my eyes the whole way home.
- speaking of prescription sunglasses, unless your character can see pretty far without their glasses or they’re far sighted, you cannot just take prescription sunglasses off and still be able to see, especially while driving. You just have to deal with it and keep the sunglasses on and look like a Matrix wannabe if it gets cloudy or starts raining, or you have to do the super speedy Dance of Death where you’re still watching the road in front of you, taking off one pair of glasses and putting the other on super fast (which usually requires you to use your mouth to open and close things).
- GLASSES ARE FRAGILE. Seriously, a very petite person could sit in them and snap them in half. They’re not something you want your character just throwing around.
- there are varying levels of how well someone can see. There’s farsightedness and nearsightedness. Some people don’t have that much trouble and can see pretty far, so only wear their glasses as needed. But some people (aka moi) can genuinely only see a few inches in front of their face. Like if I ever lost my glasses or they broke, I’d be done for. I wouldn’t be able to work or drive or do anything around the house.
- glasses need to be replaced about once a year because of possible prescription changes or sometimes lenses losing their strength and becoming harder to see through. Trying to tough it out after long enough will give your character headaches/migraines and sore eyes from eye strain.
- some mascaras (especially thick ones) will smudge glasses when the character blinks. Same with false lashes (although they’ll brush instead of smudge). Usually less intense mascaras and shorter fake lash lengths are better.
- eye makeup is harder to see with glasses on.
- please, please, PLEASE stop using the whole “omg look how much prettier/more attractive they are without their glasses” trope. Not everyone’s eyes can handle contacts and some people prefer wearing their glasses. And it makes those of us who prefer glasses or have to wear them feel like shit, especially because there aren’t a lot of characters with glasses in media who don’t become the butt of a joke (ie the one wearing glasses is the “ugly duckling” for it like in princess diaries, or like Velma from scooby doo always losing them and patting around, or people who wear glasses will always be some sort of dorky/insufferable know it all).
- glasses come in all shapes, sizes, and colors and can be used to actually enhance a character’s style! Some of them even have magnetic frames that click in place over the simple pair, so have fun using glasses to build your character’s style.
- edit to add: no one ever purposely falls asleep with their glasses on. You will crush and break them when you roll around. However, if a character does accidentally fall asleep with them on, a love interest gently taking them off so they don’t wake them up and setting them on the table next to them can be a super cute moment.
- whoops thought of some more. Hair products, especially hairspray, can be a bitch to get off glasses and doesn’t always just rinse off with water. If they’re spraying anything, including dry shampoo, the glasses have gotta come off and get out of the line of fire first.
- hair can and will get caught in the little hinge by the legs and we do occasionally not notice till we take our glasses off and rip a hair out of our heads.
- be careful when you comb or brush, cuz if the glasses legs get caught in the brush or comb, it will be ripped off our face.
Hope this helps! May the writing gods bless your work 🤓

It's been a while since I've read a fanfiction, or even really a book with this trope, but a memory just came back to me of reading about it before and after I had glasses.
I fucking hate the trope that the character "forgot their glasses and is blind without them" Because, I am EXTREMELY nearsighted, and without my glasses I would not be able to function, and it has been that way for a long time. So, when I was younger, I was confused about how they could forget.
However, then my younger brother got glasses, but he's far-sighted. That makes more sense to me. If a character is far-sighted, it means they need reading glasses, and those are rather easy to forget, my younger brother forgets them all the time, because you can usually see pretty fine without them.
So, I propose that if you want to do that trope, that's fine, but specify that the character is far sighted, or needs reading glasses, or didn't realize they forgot their glasses until they get to where they're going because they didn't need them until then.
Because then if not, and they realize it nearly immediately, I'll just assume that they're doing this the entire way to get where they're going:

This post appeared during the perfect time because it is disability pride month.
Also I have had glasses since 6th Grade, it started at about -1 diopters and currently I'm around -4 diopters, I've already forgotten how well I saw when it was only -1 diopters let alone what life with perfect vision was like. I've worn my glasses every single day ever since I got them (never tried contacts), and my vision still got worse. I can't imagine living without my glasses, they feel like a part of me. And while the health care in my country covers the cost of the glasses (not the frame) themselves as long as you're a kid, you have to pay thoses as well once you turn 18. But like why? It's not like I've stopped seeing badly in general or like my vision stopped getting worse but I need my glasses to function properly in everyday life. I need them to find things, to drive a car which I need to get to work, to not stumble over shit that's on the floor, I need it to read text that's not directly up in my face, seriously I couldn't even type this without my glasses unless I held my phone about 10cm away from my face. Health care should cover this, period.
We also still need to normalise bad vision and glasses in media, just like we need to with other disabilities and disability aid. I mean compared to other disabilities there's lots of representation but it's oftentimes just bad representation and almost never the main characters unless they need a makeover scene. Extensively more about that under the cut.
For example Harry Potter proves how you never see a main character with glasses because the fact that you can put together a lightning bolt symbol and a glasses symbol and everybody immediately knows that you mean Harry Potter speaks for itself, his glasses wouldn't be this iconic if more non-nerdy characters had some, in fact it can only be this iconic because it's not common. And even so I think it's just unrealistic that nobody ever asked if they could put his glasses on, that's such a common behaviour of people who don't have glasses.
And it's not even like a character has to start out with glasses, authors can give their characters glasses as the story goes along, they can do so despite glasses not being a thing in the original concept of the character because sometimes people only notice when they get older, someone I know only got glasses when they were 21 for this exact reason because the last time they had their eyes checked was before getting their drivers licence. A good example for this is Jason Grace one of the main characters from the Heroes of Olympus books because he didn't even notice, someone else literally had to tell him.
Or all of those romantic comedies where the girl/guy is allegedly not that attractive just for them to take their glasses off during the makeover to reveal that they were conventionally attractive all along. People in universe always act like it's the glasses that make those characters ugly (which they often even aren't in the first place), like there aren't any pretty or stylish frames, as if there aren't people who wear sunglasses or glasses without diopters as an accessory. People acting like that are one of the reasons why I was initially sad when I was first diagnosed with needing glasses instead of being excited about being able to see properly again. And I get it, people who you're only used to seeing with glasses look weirdly different without them, sorta naked in the face, but different doesn't have to mean better. Oftentimes when glasses look bad on someone it's just because they haven't found a frame that suits them.
And despite never having tried contact lenses I can see the multitude of reasons why people want to wear them, so I get when a character prefers them and stops wearing glasses most of the time. But boy do I hate it when a movie/show starts to act as if they never had them in the first place, just show them waking up and stumbling into the bathroom where they insert the contact lenses as part of their morning routine that's all I ask for. One piece of media where this was just super infuriating to me was the K Drama Marry my Husband because the main character and the love interest had glasses and both of them had the obligatory makeover (which is fine you know) but before they had really cute scenes that were elevated by the glasses and partially wouldn't even have functioned without the shitty vision of those two. And I was so excited for a couple where both had those problems with vision and would understand and have similar routines even though it wouldn't be present most of the time but then they got out of bed and acted as if they never saw badly ever in their lives, like what? That's not how wearing contacts works! They should reach out and grab their glasses before they look lovingly at their sleeping partner because I know they actually can't see any details in their face. Another K Drama example is True Beauty where the makeover is a vital part of the plot so once again it's fine, I wouldn't watch something like that if I didn't like this trope on some level and I actually think they handled the glasses part of that makeover quite okay (not good but I've seen way worse) but damn was it ridiculous when the girl couldn't walk down the stairs alone because her glasses shattered and the guy had to carry her as if the railing didn't exist to guide her safely downwards, you know, the way blind people do.
Alex from Red, White and Royal Blue is a positive example for glasses representation because even though he almost never wears his reading glasses especially in front of people he has them and he makes clear that needs them and it's actually a great character detail which makes him more real that he only wears them around people who he feels comfortable around and who he trusts because he doesn't feel like it fits his image but he let's the people close to him see this part of himself. Glasses can actually be used to enhance and tell the story.
Haikyuu was also revolutionary to me personally because Kiyoko is regarded the prettiest girl in the whole school, almost everybody has a bit of a crush on her and she wears glasses. Nobody ever tells her she should take them off or suggests that she'd look even prettier without them, or that she looks good despite wearing glasses, it's not even a topic of conversation because she is just beautiful, with or without them. Also we have sporty guys wearing glasses, some on the court and others when they don't play (like Oikawa). The fact that they thought of finally giving Tsukki special sports glasses still makes me go feral. This is the representation I need.
Kids with glasses need to see that they're not a bad thing. Characters of all personalities and roles within a story should wear glasses so that people can see that they can take up this role as well. And the way people treat their visual aids (be it glasses or contacts) needs to be more accurate to reality. This type of bad vision which is so comparatively easy and uncomplicated to "cure" is one of the most common disabilities in all social classes, cultures and ages but if we can't even manage to represent that well - despite lots of people who are involved in creating whatever it is you consume being affected - how should we have hope that other disabilities can be well represented?
Made the mistake of bringing up that needing glasses is a disability on tiktok and people got real mad.
“You can fix it with glasses” yeah, cuz they’re a disability aid? But like, I still have to pay 160 bucks to use my own fucking eyes?
Like, by definition, if your eyes do not work without aid, you have a disability to see.
Having a disability doesn’t automatically put you in what people consider the “disabled” category, but that doesn’t change the fact that it is in fact, a disability.

[ID: A digital drawing showing original designs for A Square and the Sphere from the book Flatland: A Romance of Many Dimensions, drawin against a pink background. A Square is dark blue with a white outline, four stubby legs, two tiny front arms, and a monacle. The Sphere is gold-orange, with two eyes with yellow sclera, small red irises, two small eyelashes on the bottom corner of each eye, and a red bowtie. He has a large yellow spot on his forehead, overlapping with a darker orange ring around one eye. There are three orange stripes on one wrist, and his other hand is orange. First A Square is drawn saying, "I hate woman", while the Sphere looks at him, thinking, "gay?" Then A Square is drawn by himself off to the side. Finally the Sphere is drawn showing A Square a cube, while A Square looks up at him with a blush, thinking, "yaoi". End ID.]

final a square and sphere designs (LIES . i will probably tweak them later)
also littel rant under the cut because . the hyperfixation has me in a chokehold i need to rant about how much i love this book (and hate the movie)
now that i've almost finished the book and am also reading the simplified version i'm honestly shocked about how bad the movie is in comparison, not just because the creator is disgusting, but of how much was changed and how it completely missed the point of the satire??? especially the personalities and the entire spaceland segment . actually crazy i think sphere being an asshole is kinda funny but sphere being a kind guide makes a lot more sense and i think i like it better actually, same for a. square him being a pathetic wet noodle just randomly put into another dimension is fucking hilarious but him being a bigot makes way more sense
i was also pleasantly surprised that the book is not only about how a 2d society could work but its a satire of society ??? like what thats so interesting ???? and i am sucker for horrible unjustified characters so i love a. square even more now
the best part about the book being a satire is that the creator of the movie (ladd ehlinger) didn't get the fucking point of the satire which . is SO FUCKING FUNNY how do you make an adaptation of a book without realizing ITS LITERALLY MAKING FUN OF PEOPLE LIKE YOU
anyway boooo bad movie booooooooooo read the book

Scary Sunset.
I'm concepting things way outta order in this story, but I'm sure you can piece things together. Context is for a storybeat where, after defeating and capturing Adagio (thus having all three sirens in her possession), Sunset enacts her revenge plot to release the sirens on Canterlot as Thea discovers she's been manipulated. In a confrontation, the two scuffle and fight over the siren orbs while Sunset struggles with her conflicting wants and emotions.
