The first sign something was wrong for people living along the Alaknanda River in northern India Sunday was the roar of water cascading down the canyon without warning. The sudden flooding would leave several dead, over 100 missing and feared dead, while also destroying bridges, homes and two hydro-electric power plants in its path.
Early reporting on the disaster suggested a glacial collapse or avalanche in the Himalayan mountains high above the area was to blame, but scientists studying satellite images of the peaks in nearby Nanda Devi National Park say they’ve pieced together a slightly different disaster narrative.
“Although we did not detect it, high in the mountains… a large crack was developing on the flank of one of the high peaks over a few months,” writes Dave Petley, a landslide expert from the University of Sheffield, in a blog post for the American Geophysical Union.
Looking back, the crack can be seen in images from the European Sentinel-2 satellite.
From here, University of Calgary earth scientist Dan Shugar and others began to construct a story of raw power and devastation that begins with that crack. At some point over the weekend, it grew large enough to destabilize a large block of mostly rock and some ice.
MORE FOR YOU
Petley writes that the huge block “dropped from about 5,600 m to about 3,800 m, a fall of almost two kilometers, before impacting on the valley floor. It will have instantly fragmented to generate a huge rock and ice avalanche, which traveled down the glacier. This would have been extremely fast and very energetic.”
According to Canadian hydrogologist Drew Brayshaw, who chimed in on the discussion on Twitter, “The amount of heat generated within large rock avalanches is considerable. Sometimes enough to form thin obsidian melt crusts on individual stones.”
Such energy could have easily flash-melted the surface of the glacier the avalanche flowed over, gathering even more flow and destructive potential as all that water, rock and debris rushed towards populated areas along rivers below.
“The ice will have been entrained into the flow, crushed and melted, allowing the landslide to transition to a debris flow,” Petley explains. “The volume will have continued to increase as the landslide rushed to the north.”
Destabilization of our planet’s glaciated regions is a deadly problem that grows more dire as climate change continues to thaw them further.
The potential for glacial lake outburst floods looms over a number of high altitude communities in the Andes and the Himalayas.
MORE FROM FORBESThe Deadly Threat From The World’s Most Dangerous Lake Is Mostly Our FaultBy Eric Mack
And the great global thaw is evident at lower altitudes, too. Consider the case of the Barry Arm in Alaska, a section of Prince William Sound that is fed by the receding Barry Glacier. As the glacier has shrunk, it has destabilized adjacent mountain slopes, which now appear poised to collapse into the ocean waters, potentially sending tsunami waves to inundate nearby communities like the town of Whittier.
Petley says an event similar to what seems to have happened in India this week occurred in Peru, not far from Macchu Picchu, where a slide near the glacial peak Salkantay triggered deadly flooding in 2020.
“It is fair to say though that these events might be increasing in frequency as a result of climate change,” Petley concludes.

Uttarakhand Glacier Burst: Result of Climate Change says Experts
Tumblr media
Over 150 people still missing and seven people reported dead after a glacier burst at Joshimath in Uttarakhand's Chamoli district which triggered massive flooding of the Alaknanda and Dhauliganga rivers on Sunday. Due to the glacier dam of the Rishi Ganga Tapovan Hydro Power Project was broken. Scientists claims that the huge damage is the result of climate change which led to a massive flood after a part of the Nanda Devi glacier broke off in Joshimath in Chamoli district of Uttarakhand. Mohd. Farooq Azam, Assistant Professor at IIT Indore speaking to IANS said that satellite and Google Earth images do not show a glacial lake near the region, but there is a possibility that there may be a water pocket, or lake inside the glacier, in the region that may have erupted leading to the disaster. Farooq said “There is no doubt that global warming has resulted in the warming of the region. Climate change-driven erratic weather patterns like increased snowfall and rainfall, and warmer winters have led to the melting point of a lot of snow falling. The thermal profile of ice is increasing…. where earlier the temperature of ice ranged from minus six to minus 20 degree Celsius, it is now minus two, making it more susceptible to melting.” “It is an unfortunate incident. Our thoughts are with the missing construction workers and affected people of Uttarakhand. Read the full article

WORLD NEWS SUPERFAST
India News - A huge accident took place in Uttarakhand around 10:30 AM on Sunday. The glacier collapsed in Tapovan in Chamoli district of the state and fell into the Rishiganga River. This created a flood situation and the dam on Dhauliganga was washed away.
Work is underway on the Rishiganga Hydro Power Project of a private power company in Tapovan and the NTPC project of the government company. The disaster has caused the most damage here.
About 15 to 20 laborers working in the Rishiganga project are reported missing. With this, about 150 laborers are feared dead on the NTPC project. These include 50 workers trapped in the tunnel. Three bodies have been recovered from the project site.
It is a matter of relief that the level of Alaknanda River between Peepal Koti to Chamoli has increased, but the flow has become normal due to widening of the river area. After the accident, the teams of NDRF and ADIRF reached the spot and are carrying out rescue operations.
The incident took place at half past ten in the morning. With the breaking of the glacier, the Dhauli River took a formidable form. On seeing the river, it started to bridge every obstacle coming in the way. By reaching the site of the Rishiganga power project, the river became so vast that it drained the entire dam. All the machinery and people present on the spot got caught in it.
After this, the authorities who came into action alerted Haridwar and the discharge of water from Tehri Dam to Bhagirathi was stopped. Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat has reached the spot and is monitoring the situation.
The areas along the banks of the Alaknanda and the Ganges have been in panic since the accident. Rafting and boats have been banned in Rishikesh. Not only this, the dam of Srinagar Hydro Power Project has also been emptied, so that the water level of the dam does not rise if the water rises from behind.
When Uttarakhand disaster came, how it came and how much damage was done, understand in 7 points
1. Water level rises in Rishiganga and Dhauliganga
In the Tapovan area of Chamoli at around 10:45 am, the glacier broke and fell into the Rishiganga. This increased the water level of the river. This river meets the Dhauliganga by going to Raini village, hence its water level also increased. The houses settled on the banks of the rivers were washed away. After this the surrounding villages were evacuated.
2. Rishiganga and NTPC project devastated
The Rishiganga Power Project is located in the village of Raini, on the banks of the Rishiganga River. This project has been completely destroyed. About 15-20 laborers are missing from here. The BRO Bridge on Joshimath Malaria Highway was also broken here. Here 6 shepherds and their cattle were swept away in the water.
Rescue teams have reached here. After this, where the water of Rishiganga meets Dhauliganga, the water level also increased. Water entered the NTPC project. Due to this, two suspension bridges connecting the village were washed away. The NTPC project was destroyed and about 150 laborers working there lost their lives. Of these, there were 50 laborers who were trapped in the tunnel being built here. They drowned right there.
3. 10 bodies have been recovered so far
16-17 laborers have been rescued from NTPC tunnel. So far 9-10 bodies have been recovered here. About 20 workers are feared trapped here. Rescue teams are still operating here.
4. Army and Air Force engaged in rescue
Apart from SDRF, NDRF, ITBP, the army has also sent 600 soldiers to Chamoli. In addition, the Air Force has sent three helicopters, including Mi-17 and Dhruv, on rescue missions. The Air Force said that more aircraft would be dispatched if needed.
