Tapovan barrage bore the brunt of the Uttarakhand natural calamity: NTPC

The unfortunate flash flood in Uttarakhand – caused by unprecedented snowfall that triggered an avalanche – has led serious devastation in Uttarakhand. While rescue operation is on by teams of ITBP, Indian Army and Navy, NDRF and SDRF, situation is being monitored continuously with the help of district administration and police. Tapovan barrage bore the brunt of this natural calamity, by withstanding the tremendous onslaught of the flood, the barrage reduced the surging water’s pressure, thereby saving several villages downstream from being washed away, said NTPC in a statement. But for the barrage at Tapovan Project, the loss of life and property would have been enormous. Despite the avalanche and deluge in the Alaknanda river, NTPC barrage absorbed the pressure, preventing much of the slush from flooding the area. The company in a statement said “there has been loss of lives, materials and investments, as the construction work at the site was in full swing. The initial estimate of the loss is pegged Rs 1,500 crore. Consequently, the project – slated to be completed by 2023 – will be delayed by at least 2-3 years.” Although requisite safeguards were undertaken and the site was selected after careful consideration of all environmental and ecological factors, including earthquakes as required, no project or infrastructure can account for a natural disaster of this scale that offers little time to react, said NTPC. Uttarakhand Glacier Burst: Result of Climate Change says Experts

Over 150 people still missing and seven people reported dead after a glacier burst at Joshimath in Uttarakhand's Chamoli district which triggered massive flooding of the Alaknanda and Dhauliganga rivers on Sunday. Due to the glacier dam of the Rishi Ganga Tapovan Hydro Power Project was broken. Scientists claims that the huge damage is the result of climate change which led to a massive flood after a part of the Nanda Devi glacier broke off in Joshimath in Chamoli district of Uttarakhand. Mohd. Farooq Azam, Assistant Professor at IIT Indore speaking to IANS said that satellite and Google Earth images do not show a glacial lake near the region, but there is a possibility that there may be a water pocket, or lake inside the glacier, in the region that may have erupted leading to the disaster. Farooq said “There is no doubt that global warming has resulted in the warming of the region. Climate change-driven erratic weather patterns like increased snowfall and rainfall, and warmer winters have led to the melting point of a lot of snow falling. The thermal profile of ice is increasing…. where earlier the temperature of ice ranged from minus six to minus 20 degree Celsius, it is now minus two, making it more susceptible to melting.” “It is an unfortunate incident. ग्लेशियर हादसा: 197 लोग अब भी लापता, 29 शव बरामद, तपोवन सुरंग को खोलने में नहीं मिली सफलता

चैतन्य भारत न्यूज रविवार को उत्तराखंड के चमोली में ग्लेशियर फटने से आई तबाही के बाद से ही अब तक लापता लोगों की तलाश की जा रही है। बचावकर्मियों को सबसे ज्यादा मुश्किल से तपोवन की सुरंग में आ रही है। यहां करीब 37 लोगों के फंसे होने की आशंका है। सुरंग कीचड़ से लबालब भरी हुई है। इस वजह से अंदर जाने में दिक्कत हो रही है। हालांकि, रेस्क्यू करने वाली टीम अभी भी मिशन में जुटी हैं। About 35 people are stuck inside the tunnel, we're trying to drill and make way via rope to reach them.
