Redefining the Dark: Brent Weeks' Groundbreaking Impact on Fantasy
From the sun-kissed lands of Tolkien’s Middle Earth to the frostbitten realms of Martin’s Westeros, we thought we’d seen it all in fantasy. Ah, bless our naïve little socks. Little did we know, the genre was primed to be knocked squarely on its ethereal arse by an unassuming bloke named Brent Weeks and his seminal novel, “The Way of Shadows.” In the dimly-lit world of fantasy, where elves…

Jakože docela něco slyšet Hercula Poirota řvát "Kdo se opovažuje budit hněv Cenaria a temných elfů!!?"

On the bed, wearing a hiked-up translucent nightgown, lay the princess. She was thrashing, terrified, but she couldn’t cover herself. Neph had immobilized her, too. Roth sat down on the bed next to the girl and let his eyes roam over her nubile body. He licked a finger, put it at the base of her neck, and traced it down her body. “I hope I’m not interrupting anything,” he said. Jenine Gunder’s eyes flashed. She was blushing from his casual perusal, but she was furious, too. Roth put a finger to her lips and shushed her before she could say anything. “I just came to congratulate you on your recent nuptials, my dove,” he said. “How is everything? Are you satisfied with the wealth of your husband’s endowments?” he asked. He looked over at the naked Logan and scowled. “Well, I suppose you are. And my dear Duke Gyre— stand him up, ” Roth ordered. “Or should I say Prince Gyre? Don’t lose heart. I’ve seen her mother naked, and in time she’ll—” Logan lunged forward, but his bonds held. One of the men hit him across the face. Roth continued as if there had been no interruption. He clucked his tongue. “In time. There’s the rub. In time, the princess might grow into these rather admirable breasts and hips.” He smiled at her and pinched a cheek. Roth stood, and Neph’s magic lifted Jenine from the bed to stand, trembling, next to her husband. “But you don’t have time. I hope you’ve enjoyed your marriage. And Logan, friend, I hope you’ve not been wasting your time with forepla —because your marriage is over.” The moment drew out. There was nothing Roth loved so much as watching bewilderment turn to dread turn to despair. “Who are you?” Logan asked, his eyes betraying no fear. “I’m Roth. I’m the man who ordered your brother’s death, Jenine.” Ignoring Logan, Roth watched the words break over the girl like a wave. But he didn’t stop, didn’t let her voice a denial. “I’m Roth, the Shinga of the Sa’kagé. I’m the man who ordered your father’s death, Jenine. Not ten minutes ago, I watched his head roll off the high table. “I’m Prince Roth Ursuul of Khalidor. I’m the man who ordered your sisters’ and your mother’s deaths, Jenine. If you listen, you might hear their cries.” He put a finger to his ear and an attentive look on his face, mocking. “You two are all that’s left between me and Cenaria’s crown, Jenine. And I’m going to take that crown. I’m afraid I’m going to have to kill you. Do you want to choose which of you dies first?” With each revelation, he watched her eyes, fed hungrily on her dying hope, gorged himself on her ripening despair. Roth drew a knife and turned her so she faced Logan. Logan cried out wordlessly, but Neph had gagged him. He bucked and strained against the bonds, his muscles taut, swelling huge, but escaping Neph’s magic was impossible. He could sooner tear stars from the heavens.

In a small rural town, there was a tall building where Kevin Cenaria lived his mostly lonely existence. The building was owned by his father Klaus, captain of the guard, and kevin's room was the attic that had a small attached bathroom. The window was barred and the door locked, preventing Kevin from leaving. The only companions Kevin had were two spirits known as Eric and Alan. They watched over him on behalf of his late mother who had summoned them with magic.
Eric and Alan watched over their new charge for all his life, offering him comfort and companionship that he wasn’t allowed to have from anyone else. One morning, the two spirits materialized from their charm forms that were usually hidden in a crack in the wall so Klaus wouldn’t interfere with their mission. “Good morning Kevin,” Alan greeted.
“Mornin’ Kev,” Eric added.

The Cenaria- Spears family finished cleaning up after dinner and went to the living room to spend some time together before bed. Drake had stopped by to spend some time with Mary, who was all too happy for the company.
Drake didn't leave Mary's side at all that night. "How are you feeling, love?" He asked, gently wrapping his arms around her

. . . . . #elrincondelescritornovato #elrincóndelescritornovato #librosleidosatravesdemivida #brentweeks #escritoresamericanos #escritoresnorteamericanos #escritoresdefantasia #escritores #sagasliterarias #sagas #historiasdefantasia #historiasdefantasía #megustaescribir #escribohistorias #escribomilibro #pasiónporlalectura #pasiónporleer #pasiónporlaescritura #pasiónporescribir #pasionporlalectura #pasionporleer #pasionporlaescritura #pasionporescribir #devenezuela #elescritornovato #escritornovato #escritoraficionado #soyunnarradornovato #narradornovato #narradoraficionado (en Venezuela, Maracay, Edo Aragua) https://www.instagram.com/p/CVh8JTLFsv-/?utm_medium=tumblr

Solon really is something. he was on the way to get drunk (presumably) after the shitshow wit regus. then he learns his freinds are in cenaria with what might be the most powerful magical artefact that they straight up stole because of dorians visions
... and solon just kind of rolls with it. like, hey he’s in this since ten years. might as well go for it
gotta love dorian, solon and feirs friendship.
solon finally meets his friend after a decade and the first thing he says to dorian is 'i should strangle you'
also the first thing feir says to solon is well you arent fat anymore

What's your wip about it sounds fancy? (I mean this in a good way I promise)
ok SO
short answer: political machinations and secret identities IN SPAACE
long answer:
there are three main plots (actually six bc all three continue after a seven year timeskip), each with their own main character(s) and setting
plot number one takes place in the aurodian confederacy, (keep in mind all names are first draft and liable to change) a group of planets united to take over the cenarian empire and restore the daughter of the last queen of cenaria to the throne—that daughter being the main character, rona kaalie, who is also the ward of the confederacy’s leader, tenolh. there’s only one problem though—rona’s isn’t actually the queen’s daughter, tenolh made the whole thing up so he could grab power. her plotline pre-timeskip is about her finding this out and deciding what to do about it.
plot number two takes place in the trading kingdom of maneris. it starts as basically gay space cinderella, starring leonor adelaide as ella and sharaulde as the prince, and also sharaulde’s childhood friend jendolie telestra is also there. leonor is invited to a ball, where he meets the mysterious masked blue lord, with whom he immediately hits it off (and who is later revealed to be prince sharaulde of maneris). he meets jendolie as well, and the three of them become fast friends as they uncover a plot to assassinate shar.
plot number 3 takes place in the cenarian empire, and focuses on lady jasper, the daughter of a cenarian duke (he’s from specifically the planet of cenaria, which is part of the cenarian empire). jasper is engaged to the emperor’s son, also a famous general in his own right, but he breaks off the engagement to marry a commoner woman from his own home planet of lestiria, throwing jasper’s life into turmoil as well as weakening the tenuous control the empire has over cenaria proper. (the whole reason he was engaged to jasper was to cement the emperor’s alliance with the duke, who is very influential on cenaria the planet—he takes the breaking off of this engagement as a personal slight and things go a bit to shit) jasper’s plot pre-timeskip is basically just her trying to play damage control and maybe get her fiancé back if she can.
and as for what happens after the timeskip, you’ll just have to wait and see ;) (i have a decent amount of leonor’s plotline post timeskip planned out, and a little of rona’s)
#omg an ask#smoke and stardust#theres a lot ive left out so if you want more specifics on any of these (or on the characters) feel free to ask!

He walked through with Alan and the other guy. This was getting discomforting real fast. Alan would never ever forget about his children. As they were trying to find a doctor, they could overhear Michael nearby.
"I swear on my life that I've no idea who either of you are. I have a husband, Kevin Cenaria."
Ronald stopped again. "What's going on over there?"
Michael woke up with a splitting headache. He sat up with a quiet groan, holding his head, his glasses digging into his face. What the? Had he slept with his glasses on? Glancing down, he noticed he was still wearing his full suit, even his shoes still on his feet under the blanket. "What in the world? Did someone accidentally give me alcohol or something?" He glanced at Kevin to see if he knew what happened only to freeze in horror, at a figure who was NOT his husband lying beside him.
Rhi'a woke up when she felt the bed shift. She turned to look at her husband. “Good morning love,” she was a little confused to see him wearing his suit in bed. “Why are you all dressed up like that? It’s not even time for you to go in yet.”

Beyond the Shadows
*This review contains spoilers*
“Logan Gyre is the king of Cenaria, a country under siege, with a threadbare army and little hope. He has one chance—a desperate gamble, and one that could destroy his kingdom.
In the north, the new Godking has a plan. If it comes to fruition, no one will have the power to stop him.
Kylar Stern has no choice. To save his friends—and perhaps his enemies—he must accomplish the impossible: assassinate a goddess,” (Brent Weeks).
Beyond the Shadows, the final book in The Night Angel Trilogy, picks up right where Shadow’s Edge left off. I would describe it as the best book in the series. I liked this novel because it maintained a good pace; it was also filled with action—there was always something going on. Sometimes, this was a bit overwhelming, but I definitely preferred it to a book that has so little going on that trying to read it becomes a chore. I also appreciated how this novel was the least graphic and gory in the series. The violence in the previous novels occasionally felt excessive, which is not something I appreciate or enjoy. Thus, it was easier both to get through this novel and to enjoy it. Finally, I liked how Weeks took the time to explain Kylar’s immortality because I don’t feel as though most stories take the time to do that. For example, we as readers often recognize gods and goddesses, (and perhaps other beings associated with heaven and hell), as immortal. We may even view immortality as being an innate quality associated with godhood, but this isn’t the case—the Norse Gods could die. I also thought that Weeks’ description was an interesting take on immortality—each time Kylar died, one of the people he loved died in his place, paying with their life to maintain his. It was definitely a nice and unexpected twist.
With that being said, there were definitely some things that I didn’t like about the novel and issues that continued from the earlier two books in the series. First of all, there were several spelling, grammar-related, and punctuation errors, which kept Weeks’ prose from flowing smoothly. It also made several sentences extremely confusing—I had to go back and read them several times before I understood what he was trying to say. Second, there was minimal if any growth amongst the book’s main characters—they remained bland, boring, and one-dimensional. For example, Kylar’s magical powers grew—so we could have expected him to mature in some way—feel a greater sense of responsibility, feel uncomfortable with his growing power, etc. However, despite the rise in his power, his character remained unchanged—Kylar remained a marginally sarcastic, selfish, and brash individual. Furthermore, since his immortality gives him the ability to make a second or even a third attempt at a challenge, it doesn’t feel as though there’s so much as a chance that he won’t succeed especially given the skillset he developed as a wetboy, (e.g. stealth, fighting with various weapons). In a way, Kylar’s immortality bothered me—even when he was facing harsh, impossible odds, Kylar’s predicament never seemed dire because you knew he would come back to life. In a way, it took a lot of the fun out of the book. Maybe, it even kept him from growing as a person—he will have all of eternity to do that. Furthermore, Kylar’s response to finding out what was in Durzo’s note, (from the first novel), was wayyyy to predictable, how else would he have responded? Even so, it would have been nice to see more depth to his reaction, perhaps more sorrow, more guilt, something… Another example of a bland and boring character would be Elene, who has been presented as a “pure,” kind-hearted and gentle woman since the beginning of the series. A woman who is beautiful despite her scars. She may have been a bit less sure of herself when she was younger, but that’s to be expected. In any case, her sacrifice at the end of the novel didn’t come as a surprise—her very character suggests that she would make some great sacrifice to help mankind. Furthermore, even her ability to forgive Vi for “ringing” Kylar didn’t come as a surprise—if she’s being presented as a woman without a “bad bone in her body,” then anything that would give a normal person trouble wouldn’t give her any trouble at all. In essence, everything these two characters, (and the rest of the characters), accomplished seemed “blah,” (for a lack of a better word), and predictable because they have (barely) changed since the first novel in the series. As a result, the novel became more predictable and less exciting as well.
Rating: 3.7/5 stars

It was an overcast day in London. Just like every other day, there were many deaths and souls to be collected. One such soul was due to be collected by Mary Cenaria-Spears. The victim was due to die by being stabbed by another person. Though what nobody knew, unfortunately, was that this collection would end in tragedy (the-negative-world)
Mary Cenaria-Spears went about her day as usual. Nothing much was different about her missions, there was nothing much she was expecting other than to do her work and go home. She was coming up to the last on her list. A murder victim. How unfortunate. Mary didn’t realize that the victim would be sharing their misfortune.
