I don't normally go about praising books, but I just finished the last book in the Covenant of Steel trilogy by Anthony Ryan and oh my god. These books, this story, has been one of the best things I've read in such a long time. The writing is wonderful, as is the world he crafted. The characters are believable (with all ranges of people represented!! Including poc and queer people!!) and it is not smutty at all (there is only two scenes in which there is some sex, but the description is more fade-to-black, which I appreciated immensely). There is a lot of thematic ties to the idea of martyrdom and the power of religion as a source both of corruption and comfort. And the battles, knights, and fighting techniques... *chef's kiss* There's also just enough magic involved that it can be called fantasy, but it's done is a very interesting way.

So 10/10, definitely check them out if you're looking for something to read. I can't say they're for everyone, but I know some people here who would enjoy it.

Anyways, I just realised it's 'Blood Song' not 'Bloodsong' 💀

Also the paper I used for the Oxford hollow was too thick and now it doesn't fall open as easily as I would have liked

The thing about Anthony Ryan is that I find his gloomy straight boy protagonists to be considerably more likable than many other fantasy heroes bc they spend a lot of time hanging out with women and gay people.

Wilhum beating the shit out of Alwyn on the training field while coming out to him was an incredible scene. Like. Not joking, the existence and acknowledgement of gay people as important characters and also just figures in the world is something that I really appreciate in both the Seven Swords books and the Covenant of Steel. And to the point about women, something I'm really loving about the Pariah is that while there are definitely several significant Too Hot For Him women that DO want to fuck Alwyn, there are also many many others who pointedly and resolutely do NOT (Toria, my beloved 💖)

Alwyn Scribe to me is a character of all time. Was illiterate up to age 17, then very soon after learning to write became regarded as one of the best scribes in the world. Lies at any given opportunity. Once tried to smuggle a vial of poison into prison by hiding it up his ass. God’s specialist little guy despite spending most of the series an atheist. Started several holy wars while once again not believing in any of the religions involved. Kept refusing to break up with his girlfriend despite all the red flags and the divine omens that she was evil. Really cares about preserving books and history but also wrote shit that was fully not true and tried to get it into an archive. Historians cannot agree whether he was good or evil because he switched sides so much. What more could you want from a man
