 …Velvet Underground first recorded this song, late in 1966, with the goal of tailoring a hit single. Instead they created a dark lullaby with a near-gospel message about the world versus spirit. John Cale and Lou Reed wrote the song in a classic pop-rock template that could’ve suited The Monkees, The Turtles, or any number of pop acts of the day. Cale added celesta on impulse, heightening the lullaby feel of the song—which opened one of rock music’s most influential albums, THE VELVET UNDERGROUND AND NICO. In my remake I sought to retain the etherealness of the original while going into a jangly ambient pop mode with vocal harmonies, thick guitars, subtle keyboards, and Brian Wilson-style percussion. The studio musicians are 3/5ths of The Badlees—Bret Alexander, Ron Simasek, Paul Smith—a.k.a. The Cellarbirds a.k.a. “The Wrecking Crew of Pennsylvania.” I’d already been playing this song in my solo acoustic concerts, but these Badlees-Cellarbirds cats took it to a higher place. It was a relaxed recording session, and the track has gotten a lot of mileage. I’m grateful that, in 2006, Reed himself commended it and featured it on his website.

• Origin & Class

1. What is their backstory and why did you choose it?

She was born with a natural connection to the Arcane. Yet, despite her innate potential, she had never been formally trained as a sorceress. Such pursuits were dismissed as irrelevant for the daughter of Bhaal.

Her upbringing allowed no room for exploration or nurturing of her magical gifts. Meditation, torture, seduction and absolute servitude to the Lord of Murder had dominated her life from the moment she learned to walk. Every breath she took, every lesson she endured, was steeped in the shadowy, violent doctrine of her father’s legacy.

The lessons she learned were not those of spells or incantations, but of cruelty, obedience, and survival. Where others might have studied scrolls or practiced with mentors, she had been honed like a blade: sharpened through pain, refined through loss, and tempered by the unyielding expectations of her bloodline.

Still, her magic remained, a quiet rebellion against the life carved out for her. It was a part of her that refused to be silenced, no matter how tightly the chains of servitude were wound. Even as she bowed her head to Bhaal's will, the Arcane burned within her, waiting for the day she would claim it as her own.

2. What is their class (+ subclass) and why did you choose it?

Sorceress + Bard, because I like the idea of entertaining the troupe in the evening.

3. Do they multiclass? Why (not)?

Celeste always harbored a quiet love for music. Even as a child, she found solace in the melodies she would hum to herself, moments stolen in the rare quiet of her otherwise harrowing life.

But in the house of Bhaal, such pleasures were not encouraged. Music was a distraction, a frivolity unworthy of the daughter of the Lord of Murder. Instruments were not tools of power; they were trinkets for the weak. Her handlers ensured her days were filled with discipline and darkness, leaving no space for the softer pursuits of harmony or expression.

Still, Celeste clung to it in secret. She would fashion flutes from hollowed reeds or bones or draw strings taut across scraps of wood when no one was watching. Her creations were crude, but they made sound, and that was enough. She would practice late into the night, her melodies soft and sorrowful.

Music became her refuge. It was a language beyond words, beyond bloodlines. A language where she could exist as something other than a vessel for her father's will.

When she finally broke free, her music took on new depth, tinged with both grief and hope. It became part of her magic, woven into her spells and her very essence. For Celeste, music was not merely an art. It is an act of rebellion, a declaration of her freedom, and a reminder that she could choose who she wanted to be.

4. Is there a reason why your Tav starts out as Level 1?

The amnesia that came with the tadpole lead to her experiencing basically everything for the first time.

5. Does your Tav have family members? Are they close?

Well, that didn't go well with Orin. But Celeste had a younger sister who she killed in a duell at a young age.

6. Does your Tav have any friends from their past? Are they still friends?

None.

7. Does your Tav have connections to other characters (I.e.: NPCs)?

She remains close with everyone from their troupe but only starts building connection with others after she moved to Waterdeep.

8. Where did your character live before the events of the game?

In the "beautiful" Bhaal Temple below Baldur's Gate

9. Does your Tav have a different class/race/origin than in the game? (I.e.: Your Tav is Aasimar, fisherman backstory ...)

Nope, just a daugther of Bhaal....

10. What was your Tav like as a child?

She prefers not to remember what ever memories come back over time.

• Prologue

11. What goes through your Tav's head when they wake up on the Nautiloid? Are they scared or do they push those feelings aside to focus on escaping?

Celeste was pissed. Her head hurt, she was basically naked and had not recollection of who or where she was. Or why.

Her first reaction to emotional overwhelm was usually anger but she did not know it at that point, so the vulnerability of her situation was new to her.

Then, in her defense, everything was new.

12. How does your Tav feel about Us? Did they free them, maim them or leave them behind?

Though unable to shed the echoes her heritage in the beginning, Celeste is a gentle person. She freed us and took it with her.

13. What was your Tav's first reaction to Lae'Zel?

Amusement and curiosity. She knew Lae'Zel was a brilliant fighter and without knowing why, she respected it.

14. What was your Tav's first reaction to Shadowheart?

Someone needed help, so she helped.

15. Does your Tav use their Arcana knowledge to free Shadowheart or do they use the rune found in the next room?

Arcane knowledge though she was unaware where it came from or how she learned it.

16. Does your Tav help the mindflayer against Commander Zhalk or do they run straight to the helm?

Of course. Bloodshed is fun!

17. Does your Tav's starting armor reflect them? If not, what would they wear instead?

I designed her with light leather armor but no clothes underneath. Celeste prefers more revealing clothes with less leather.

18. If you could, would your Tav see any of the other companions? If so, how would they react?

She would have tried to free every single one of them.

19. What's your Tav's personality like at the start of the game? Does it change as the game goes on?

She is eager to help others, mostly because she is unable to help herself. The lost self, the fear of what she might discover and learn about herself threatens to consume her.

20. Finally, what does your Tav feel as the Nautiloid crashes? Are they scared? Are they thinking of a way to survive?

She did not anticipate to survive but there was no real time to talk about it.

• Act 1 21. Which companion do you get first? If you get Shadowheart first no matter what, who's the second one?

Shadowheart, Astarion, Gale.

22. What is your Tav's first impression of the other companions (Astarion, Gale, Karlach, Wyll ...)

Shadowheart: Curiosity and relief as she freed her on the nautiloid. A little suspicios but 5/7 would fuck, not romantically interested

Astarion: Insufferable, undeservedly arrogant idiot, but somehow stunningly beautiful. 7/7 would fuck

Gale: What an idiot. How can he consider himself a real mage and get stuck in a sigil? But charming. 5/7 would fuck

Wyll: Oh fuck me, a white knight. A cute one, that is but the way he talks and behaves. Fuck no. 2/7, only if necessary, not romantically interested

Karlach: What a striking woman! Let's be friends! 3/7 but not romantically interested

23. What's their opinion of Emerald Grove? Do they help the tieflings or side with the druids?

Celeste liked Aradin, but Zevlor's concern for the children stirred something soft inside her, a feeling she didn’t quite understand, but it felt right. When Gale supported her diplomatic approach, she felt encouraged. Helping the tieflings seemed like the thing to do, especially since Kagha was, in her words, a cunt.

24. How does your Tav feel about Mol and her friends?

Celeste deeply cared for the children, helping them in any way she could. She felt a strong connection to them, though she couldn’t quite understand why.

26. What does your Tav think of the Raphael?

A pompous, idiotic devil who wanted her to act without revealing his own motives. Her first instinct was to decline, and looking back, she was grateful she did.

27. Does your Tav adopt Scratch and the Owlbear cub? Did you name him?

Of course she does. The owlbear cup is occasionally referred to as "Potatoes" because Gale feeds it potato peels when he's cooking but has no real name

28. What does your Tav think of Auntie Ethel? What do they tell Mayrina?

She liked Auntie Ethel, such a cute old lady! So sad she turned out to be a hag and had to be killed. Sorry for Mayrina but apparently, existence is pain. She still felt for her, though.

29. What does your Tav do about the Goblin camp? Do they free Halsin or side with Minthara? What's their opinion of them?

As Celeste tries to do the good thing everytime she can, she freed Halsin but slays Minthara as she was conceived as one of the leaders.

30. Who does your Tav think of when they go to sleep at the goblin/tiefling party? Or are they lucky and do they get to spend the night with the person they want?

Celeste sang, danced and entertained the guests to the best of her abilities. As she had already started an affair with Astarion, she was surprised about Gale's drunk confession, so she went to be alone to think and sort her thoughts.

31. What does your Tav think of the Underdark and the Myconids?

An absolutely fascinating species she would have loved to study and know more about. Sadly, the time to return to them has yet to be made.

32. Does your Tav help Glut or do they fight him?

Celeste considered him to be the mushroom equivalent of a fascist, so he was killed.

33. Do you bring the potion ingredients to Omeluum and, if so, did you drink it? Did you barter for his ring?

She collected all the ingrediences, clinging to the hope he might be able to help and deeply disappointed when his awful potion did not do anything useful. She claimed the ring as compensation.

34. Does your Tav react to the Sussur flower (Sorcerer) or how would they react if it affected them?

She did and shared a quacking joke with Gale about it but made sure, Karlach carried them until they were stored at camp.

35. Do they deliver Nere's head to the Myconids and save the slaves?

Absolutely. She disliked drow for a reason unknown to her, so cutting of his head was mandatroy.

36. Did your Tav fight the Forge Protector? How did the fight go for them?

Yes, they won :) Though They all needed new boots afterwards and some intense healing for all of the burn marks.

37. Did your Tav go to Creche Y'llek? Did they know something was up with the healer?

They visited the Creche because Lae'zel insisted. Initially, it was not planned to fight everyone but when in Rome....

38. Did your Tav deface the portrait of Vlaakith?

She did not, as her survival instincts took precedence in that moment, and she chose to prioritize her will to live over defying such a foul god.

39. Did your Tav get the Blood of Lathandar?

The statues were found on accident but yes, she took the Blood of Lathandar and got yelled at by Astarion later.

40. Did your Tav agree to kill the Guardian or did they go talk to them instead?

The guardian was already hostile when Celeste approached him, so there was no option to let him live.

• Act 2 41. Which way did they take? Monestary road Did they run into Elminster?

Yes.

What was their opinion of his news for Gale?

Celeste was horrified by his proposal and spent the night talking Gale through his feelings. She was deeply worried about him and the impact this had on his mental health.

42. How does your Tav react to the shadow curse? Are they scared of the dark?

She disliked it but her worries were soothed when she realized a mere torch could prevent damage and allow for save passage.

43. What does your Tav think of Jaheira and the Harpers?

She knew stories about Jaheira before Karlach was so happy about meeting her childhood hero.

Perceiving Jaheira as a skilled and experienced fighter, she understood her position and caution.

44. What does your Tav think of Isobel?

A weird young woman with despicable make up but apparently someone able to help.

45. Does your Tav help Mol win against Raphael?

Of course.

46. Does your Tav help Astarion make a deal with Raphael?

He was his own man and could make his own choices. No help was needed.

47. Does your Tav help Markus or do they warn Isobel?

Celeste instinctively sided with Isobel as she was protecting the Last Light Inn.

48. Does your Tav steal the moonlantern from Kar'Niss or do they fight him?

She followed the Drider carefully and in hopes to reach Moonlight Towers but sided with the Harpers the first chance she got.

49. How does your Tav react to Ketheric Thorm? What about his family (Gerringothe Thorm, Malus Thorm ...)?

Just a vile old man unwilling to die. Despicable in choices and arrogance.

Thaniel had insisted he had to die, so he had to die.

50. Does your Tav save the tieflings & gnomes?

At the first chance she had, yes.

51. What does your Tav think of the Gauntlet of Shar?

An interesting and fun challenge, especially the library. She thought it hilarious to be in an library that forbid Gale to speak.

52. What does your Tav think of Dame Aylin?

A striking and strong woman who inspires worship but also demanded obedience.

53. Did your Tav help Art Cullagh?

Most certainly. Halsin insisted he needed help, so they went to the House of Healing to collect his belongings and slay the Doctor and his nurses.

54. What did your Tav tell Arabella about her parents?

Celeste promised to look for them although she already knew they were dead. It was important to get Arabella to safety.

55. Did your Tav reunite with Us?

Yes!

56. What did your Tav think of the Mindflayer colony?

Foul smelling, most vile place to be but a path that needed to be crossed to reach their goal: kill Katheric Thorm.

57. Did your Tav free Zevlor? Did they free Mizora?

She freed everyone, although the thought to get rid of Mizora was tempting.

58. Did your Tav complete the Brain Node puzzle?

Yes, first try.

59. Did you use the Minds you find on the head near the brain node puzzle?

No.

60. Did you clear Moonrise Towers of the shadow curse?

Of course she did.

• Act 3

61. How does your Tav feel about Baldur's Gate? Is it their home? Is it their first time in the city?

It felt strangely familiar, though she couldn’t pinpoint why or where this feeling originated. She recognized the roads, certain taverns, and market stalls, moving through the city with ease as if she had been here before.

62. What's their first impression when they enter Rivington?

No certain feeling. just another way they had to cross to reach their goal.

63. If Shadowheart got a new haircut, how does your Tav react?

She loved it. Go girl!

64. What does your Tav do with the trapped kids' toys?

She donated the toys (I think, not quite sure)

65. Does your Tav go to the circus? Do they like the activities?

Karlach was so eager to visit the circus, so they went to check it out. It turned out to be a super fun and surprisingly relaxed day until they meet the clown.

She finished the love quiz with both Halsin and Gale.

66. Does your Tav help with the murder investigation?

Absolutely.

67. Does your Tav meet Tara? What's their opinion?

AA brilliant and intriguing creature, Celeste was eager to meet her and even more thrilled to be invited to dinner by Gale.

68. What does your Tav do with the Mindflayer in the windmill?

She did not encounter him.

69. Does your Tav run into Orin? If so, what's their first opinion?

Yes, at the Circus. She was shocked at the revelation she is a Bhaalspawn but not surprised.

70. Does your Tav make a deal with Raphael?

To Gale's disapproval, she did.

71. Does your Tav 'spend time' at Sharess' Caress?

Oh very much so. Halsin was eager to share the Drow twins.

72. How does your Tav enter the city?

Investigation pass.

73. Do they free Florrick?

As soon as she can.

74. What do they do at Gortash' coronation?

While Gortash hinted they were lovers, Celeste stood mostly quiet and spent a good amount of time to calm Karlach. Only to get into a fight with Gale after the coronation.

75. What does your Tav do with the serial killer running rampant?

She killed every single shapeshifter she encountered. After Gortash's revelation, she made sure to soothe as much of the pain her actions had caused as possible.

76. Does your Tav tell Dame Aylin about Lorroaken? Do they help her fight him?

What a question! Of course she told her and aided her in the fight. He was mean to Gale afterall.

77. Does your Tav go to the House of Hopes? If so, do they sleep with Haarlep?

Wulbren was basically a terrorist, so all slaves were freed and the Gondians saved. She managed to negotiate a truce afterwards.

Yes, she freed him in Act 1, but upon reaching Baldur's Gate, she became so consumed by her own struggles and the revelations about her past that she forgot to check on him.

Celeste investigated it and freed Minsk.

83. Does your Tav reunite with Mayrina? Do they fight Auntie Ethel? Do they save Vanra?

No.

She did, killing her grandfather and learning more about her past than she wanted to know.

Yes.

Celeste decided to side with Orpheus and turn on the Emperor, handing the stones to Orpheus.

No but she killed Orpheus as he requested.

Celeste went to Reithwein with Halsin, as Gale tried to force a choice and went to Waterdeep without her. Described in You are everything.

She did not.

They all saw each other regularly but Celeste decided to visit Reithwin more frequently.

She enjoyes peace and quiet now. Reading, cooking, gardening. Visiting her friends and tending to the community she has build.

95. What do you think of your Tav's development throughout the game? If you compared them to who they were at the start, what would be different?

Celeste's journey was initially driven by anger and fear, but as time passed, she discovered a softer, more compassionate side of herself. The revelation of her Bhaalspawn heritage devastated her, but it also fueled her determination to atone for the darker deeds of her past life.

• Companions 96. Does Lae'Zel remain loyal to Vlaakith, or does she follow Orpheus? Or neither?

She followed Orpheus and took his dragons back to her plane of existence.

97. Does Astarion kill Cazador? Does he remain a vampire spawn or does he complete the ritual?

He killed Cazador but Celeste was able to talk him out of the ritual.

98. What does Gale want? The crown for himself? For Mystra? Or has he given up on chasing power?

Her biggest achievement: Gale chose her over power and handed the Crown over to Mystra.

99. Did Wyll get freed from Mizora? Did he save his father?

Yes and yes.

100. Did Karlach get upgraded? Did she turn Illithid? Did she return to Avernus? If so, did Tav join her, or Wyll, or both?

Karlach's heart was upgraded every chance they had but returend to Avernus with Wyll.

101. Did your Tav recruit Minsc? What's their opinion of him?

Of course! He is one of her best friends now.

102. Did Shadowheart turn to Selûne or did she remain loyal to Shar? Did she free her parents or let them go?

She did turn to Selune but it took time. Her parents were freed, they settle in Reithwein together.

103. Did Tav help Jaheira with the Harpers?

She did. Celeste and Jaheira remain good friends, visiting regularly. Celeste even works with the Harpers in Waterdeep.

104. Who did your Tav romance? How did this romance develop throughout the game? What happened at the end?

Initially, Celeste fell for easy sex with Astarion and enjoyed the carelessness of it. As they grew closer, they decided on a non sexual but deeply intimate friendship.

She romanced Gale and fell for him, hard. Celeste ended up marrying him.

Celeste also romanced Halsin which was hard for Gale in the beginning. It took long talks about trust, jealousy, insecurities and different relationship styles before he was able to make peace with it.

Instead, they created a dark lullaby with a near-gospel message about the world versus spirit. John Cale and Lou Reed wrote the song in a classic pop template that could’ve suited The Monkees, The Turtles, or any number of pop acts of the day. Cale added celesta on impulse, heightening the lullaby feel of the song—which opened one of rock music’s most influential albums, THE VELVET UNDERGROUND AND NICO. In my remake I sought to retain the etherealness of the original while going into a jangly ambient pop mode with vocal harmonies, thick guitars, subtle keyboards, and Brian Wilson-style percussion. The studio musicians are 3/5ths of The Badlees—Bret Alexander, Ron Simasek, Paul Smith—a.k.a. The Cellarbirds. I’d already been playing this song in my solo acoustic concerts, but these Badlees-Cellarbirds cats took it to a higher place. It was a relaxed recording session, and the track has gotten a lot of mileage. I’m grateful that, in 2006, Reed himself commended it and featured it on his website.
