All About Mabon
Mabon is the name given to the pagan and Wiccan holiday that is celebrated on the autumn equinox. This year, it falls on September 22nd in the northern hemisphere. Although celebrations have been happening on the autumn equinox for centuries, Mabon as we know it today is a holiday coined and created around the 70s by new-age paganism and Wicca, named after the Welsh God. Although it doesn't have ancient roots, it does take inspiration from other autumn harvest festivals and participants have created beautiful ways to celebrate the neo-pagan holiday.
Just like other autumn equinox festivals, the main theme of Mabon seems to be one of transitioning seasons and giving thanks to the harvest and honoring nature. Many people consider it the pagan version of "Thanksgiving" as both holidays share many of the same symbolism and draw from seasonal items. Cornucopias play a big part in the symbolism of Mabon, representing a bountiful harvest, along with apples as well. Many people gather, feast, and spend time preparing for the long winter ahead as the days now grow shorter. Balance and scales also play a big role in celebrations due to the equinox, making it a great time to reflect on the give and take of life.
There doesn't seem to be one set way to celebrate Mabon due to its recent nature, so participants are encouraged to simply lean on the underlying themes of the holiday and celebrate in the ways that speak to them as they enjoy the universal shift in seasons.
Mabon Associations:
Colors - red, orange, brown, yellow, gold
Food - apples, squash, bread, corn, grains, root vegetables, grapes, nuts, pomegranates, wine, beer, cider, cinnamon
Animals - farm animals
Items - cornucopias, corn stalks, harvest tools, scales, acorns, autumn leaves
Crystals - amber, citrine, jasper, obsidian
Other - balance, change, thankfulness, reflection, letting go
Ways to celebrate:
have a feast
gather with loved ones and give thanks
write a list of everything you're grateful for
have a bonfire
decorate your home with Mabon and Autumn symbolism
harvest food from your garden
visit a farmers market
bake bread or pie
cook autumn themed food
write down goals for the coming season
create a Mabon altar
donate your time or money to those in need
go apple picking
cleanse and ward your home
stock up on food for winter

We did Autumn Equinox dinner tonight as I was busy last night. I made the Cumberland sausage, apple and cider casserole and colcannon from the Michaelmas and Halloween chapters of Porters Seasonal Celebrations Cookbook.
Our oven isn’t working properly right now so I adapted the recipe for the sausage for the stove top. I doubled the liquid ingredients and at the end thickened it with cornstarch and it made a nice gravy.

Ostara
Tumblr media
Ostara, or the spring equinox, happens between the 20th and the 24th of March every year. It officially marks the beginning of spring, and so the warm weather coming! It represents rebirth and growth, but also balance.
Ostara is a good time to plan things for spring (like things you want to do this summer, or your garden. Some of us might even be able to start their garden at this time! It's still too cold here for me to do it), spring cleaning and, if possible, open windows for (probably) the first time this year! Also think of repotting your indoor plants so they can also start anew for this year!
Without really planning, you can also just write down your goals for this spring
Colors to wear, be it with makeup, clothes, or other accessories are pink, green, purple, yellow, white… mostly pastel colors!
Crystals to wear or to make spells with for Ostara are rose quartz, clear quartz, amethyst, bloodstone, carnelian, sunstone, agate and lapis lazuli Now for foods! Eat things with cheese, eggs, seeds, nuts, in-season vegetables and fruits, but most importantly: honey! I already shared it last year on my blog, but you definitely should try this easy honey cake recipe for Ostara!
And since I like Ostara a lot, I found this recipe for hot cross buns: turns out they taste amazing for breakfast or just a lil snack!
Tumblr media
For activities, you can also light black and white candles for balance
You can dye or paint eggs in pastel colors!
You can eat chocolate rabbits and go take walks outside to see the change of seasons and how nature is coming back to life! You could also take a bath or keep yourself grounded by meditating outside (if it's not too cold!)
Of course, there's the usual divination you can do!
Blessed Ostara!

Autumn Equinox
I’ve decided I’ll be celebrating the Autumn Equinox this year! It’s something I’ve been wanting to do for a while.
Celebrating the Equinox in my opinion consists of your regular Autumn activities such as baking, decorating, shopping for Autumn, buying hot drinks (pumpkin spiced or not), and eating a large meal. Although I’m open to suggestions.
My personal celebration will start off with going shopping for Autumn gear and just looking around followed by a hot beverage. Then I’ll head home to decorate and bake a couple treats. I’ll probably have some sort of Autumnish movie marathon on in the background like Lord of the Rings. Then enjoy my movies with a big dinner and desserts.
If someone plans to celebrate too, let me know! It’ll be fun to know I’m not celebrating alone.
