So.

I played Life is Strange 2 again.

Partly because I wanted to get all the achievements (one would say, why didn’t you play collectible mode? Listen, I’m like that, I need to play the whole game, I can’t just pick up the collectibles), partly because I hadn’t really played it since it came out. I really enjoyed it back then, but the game is rough. It’s tragedy porn. Sean Díaz goes through so much shit. Daniel too! But mostly Sean. And I get the story, but man... Look what they did to my boy!

So it took me a bit to get back to it. Still enjoy the game, still rough.

Now playing it with the hindsight of having played it in before (and some handy dandy guides) I got what I think it’s the best ending. High morality, Daniel is comfortable with his powers, Sean lives in Mexico, free and Daniel lives with his grandparents. I think the game kinda wants you to surrender Sean? What with David’s advice to Sean and all that, but the ending where Sean goes to jail... Oof. Only positive thing is that Lyla is there.

I felt a bit weird about the romances this time around since Sean is 16 and I’m not super clear on Finn and Cassidy’s ages? And also, after all this time, I still can’t get behind Finn’s character? Like, woo! Sean is bisexual, he can get with this hippy boy, yay... Said hippy decides the moment he sees Daniel that he’s going to use for a heist? And still goes through it even when Sean refuses to do it? Woo, gay rights?

Hard pass, Finn.

Thank you for much for the message, the hug, and the cup of coffee! All are welcome! Also, please forgive the SUPER LATE response to this message, but I was unable to write everything out sooner. So, if you're still around, I hope you can still enjoy reading about these two! Hope you are having a beautiful day, as well! ^_^

Now, onto my answers!

1. I actually haven't decided yet on exactly how or when they meet, though I can tell you that takes place in June 1756, after Shay has recovered under the care of Constance's parents-in-law, the Finnegans. That being said, before they meet proper, Constance DOES spot Shay in town, sporting her late husband's Templar coat - and let's just say, she immediately decides to have some strong, choice words with Barry and Cassidy!

2. Slow burn, ABSOLUTELY. Each can't deny the other is physically attractive, but with the still-grieving Constance initially unhappy with Shay inheriting her late husband's coat, and Shay still emotionally recovering from defecting from the Assassins, the sparks don't begin to fly until much later on! (Y'know, once they've had a chance to talk like actual adults? lol)

3. I haven't written any one shots yet, actually! But once I get things more solidified with them, I might! Maybe if I ever open up requests for ficlet prompts again, I'll offer them as an option!

4. My current faceclaim for Constance is the lovely Dominique Devenport!

5. And I do currently have a playlist for them, that I'm still adding to! But one song I will mention that ALWAYS reminds me of them is "Sirens" from the "Jane Eyre" musical. With all the references to the sea, the passionate frustration, and the underlining pining, I think it's just perfect for them! (Especially given some of the obstacles that come later on that prevents them from getting together just yet.)

A Story about Ostracization, Erasure, Displacement, and More

Homelessness/Houselessness:

What makes Life is Strange 2 special is its overarching themes of displacement, exclusion, and being “the other.” The game explores these themes in a variety of ways. The first way it explores them is by tackling Houselessness/Homelessness, and more importantly, youth Houselessness/Homelessness, which is seldom discussed. Throughout the game, there are various representations of characters who are homeless, nomadic, or are living unconventional lifestyles. Sean and Daniel lose their mother after she leaves to be raised by their father alone and end up losing their father after a racial profiling incident with a police officer occurs; the boys are left with no caretakers. Our protagonists are completely displaced and are considered criminals, thugs, outlaws, murderers, etc. The labels harm them even more, however, due to their Mexican American identities.

On the other end of the homeless/houseless spectrum, are characters like Brody (Brody Holloway), who was raised in an upper-class family but decided the unconventional and nomadic lifestyle was best for him. He becomes a traveling journalist and has the freedom to protest, write blogs, do podcasts, etc. He has the freedom to roam around and be creative because of the high class, safe, and structured upbringing he came from.

There are many other drifters Sean and Daniel meet along their journey. We’re introduced to characters like Cassidy who comes from an emotionally abusive family, where her father was racist and addicted to drugs, and her mother was complacent to it all. There’s also characters like Finn (Finnegan McNamara), whose father ratted him and his brothers out to law enforcement after starting an illegal business with them. The incident resulted in him and his brothers going to jail. Penny was continuously ostracized while growing up in a poor neighborhood in Chicago because of his “queer” identity. We’re also introduced to Jacob (Jacob Hackerman), who grew up in a very pious cult-like community that he was exiled from because of his gay identity. Later on in the game, we learn more about Karen, Sean and Daniel’s mother, who wanted to pave her own path and be set free from the rules set by society. We meet many characters similar to her in the commune that she resides in. The game gives us wide arrange of perspectives on and outcomes of homelessness/houselessness, some choose it, and others don’t have a choice but to live the way they do.

A Shay Cormac x Reader Story

Word Count: 1,765 Warnings: Slight Angst, Explicit Language

“Mister Finnegan, if I had a pound for every time you groaned like that, I’d be a very, very, very, rich woman.” She grinned at the older man sitting beside her on the sofa, watching as he rested his head back against the seat.

           Barry let out another groan. “Come off it, (Y/N). I’ve a right to release my frustration.”

           She snorted, folding the blanket into a neat square. “I think you’ve been releasing frustration for about fifty years.” (Y/N) set the blanket across the back of the sofa and quipped, “How have you not run out of it yet?”

           He glared at her. “Because for some reason I keep collecting fools in my home.”

           A laugh sounded in her throat and she rose from the couch, resting the basket on her hip. “Not the first, certainly not the last.” (Y/N) grinned as she walked to the stairs, hearing Barry let out another groan.

           When she reached the top of the stairs, she stepped into her room, beginning to empty the basket. She quietly hummed to herself, glancing over her shoulder as footsteps sounded behind her.

           “Here you are, (Y/N).” Cassidy walked over to her, busying herself with organizing the clothes. “I was wondering where you’d gone.”

           “I’m here, there, and everywhere, Cassidy.”

           The older woman huffed a laugh. “That you are, dear.” She paused a moment and looked out the window. “Such a beautiful sunset.”

           (Y/N) shifted her gaze to the glass panes as well, hands halting as she stared. “Agreed.” She glanced at Cassidy. “Would you like to take an evening walk with me? It’s not too terribly warm out.”

           A smile grew on the older woman’s face and she nodded. “That sounds like a fantastic idea, (Y/N).” She set the folded tunics in a neat pile. “I’ll go ready our shawls.”

           The younger woman watched her leave before sighing pleasantly, following moments later.

           “Sometimes I feel as though New York comes alive more at night than it does in the day.”

           (Y/N) tipped her head in acknowledgment, gently tugging Cassidy’s arm to guide her from the battalion of redcoats coming their way. “Has it changed much since you were a young woman?”

           Cassidy nodded, pausing to look both ways down the street before they crossed over. “It has…I remember when many of the roads were still dirt and not cobblestone.” She smiled, and for a moment, (Y/N) thought she looked younger than she had in years. “I met Barry on that road over there.” Cassidy nodded her head towards a corner. “Drunkenly stumbled into me coming out of the tavern with his friends one night.” She met the other’s eyes and grinned, “I slapped him sober and the rest is history.” (Y/N) couldn’t help but practically cackle at the mental image of a younger Cassidy Finnegan slapping Barry Finnegan silly.

           They walked around the other side of the neighborhood and suddenly Cassidy went still. (Y/N) glanced over, slightly concerned, but saw a smile growing on the woman’s face. “Cassidy?”

           “He’s back!” she replied happily.

           (Y/N) tipped her head to the side and followed her line of sight, seeing the main mast of a ship coming into a harbor. Fort Arsenal’s harbor, to be exact. “He’s back then? The owner of the fort?”

           Cassidy stared at her with confusion. “You know him?”

           She shook her head. “Not…exactly?” The woman cocked an eyebrow and (Y/N) admitted hurriedly, “I heard you and Mister Finnegan talking about the fort some time ago and all those nightly walks have actually been a cover for going over to clean the mansion.”

           The older woman’s eyes grew large and round. “What? You mean you’ve been out every night to clean the fort?” (Y/N) nodded, and Cassidy pulled a satisfied look. “Well then, I guess we should go over and introduce you to the owner.”

           As they passed through the gates and neared the mansion, (Y/N) halted, pointing at the basket. “Wait, let’s give those muffins to the sailors.”

           “Of course, but why?”

           “Well, they’ve probably been out for a while. I figure a nice carrot muffin would taste fantastic compared to biscuits and salted pork.”

           “Oh, that’s a fantastic point.” She handed (Y/N) the basket. “You should be the one to, since it’s your idea.”

           The younger woman nodded, and they started back on the walk over. They neared the ship and (Y/N) cocked her head to the side, catching sight of the lettering on the back of the ship. “The Morrigan?” she whispered.

           “Did you say something, dear?”

           She shook her head but felt something sharp grind it’s way through her chest as they neared the gangway. (Y/N) waved at the sailors beginning to look their way. “Hello gentlemen! Is your captain aboard?” A few of the sailors started speaking at once and she snorted. “Please, one at a time.”

           A young man, couldn’t have been older than eighteen, stepped up and pointed towards the cabin. “Aye Miss. He’s talking with the first mate and their boss.”

           (Y/N) nodded, raising the basket, and gently tugging at Cassidy’s arm. “Your captain is a friend of Miss Finnegan’s, and I’ve been taking care of Fort Arsenal in his absence. Might we come aboard to greet the captain? You can have some of these muffins if you do.” The sailor’s faces lit up and they nodded excitedly.

           Before she could even lift her foot, one of them shouted, “Don’t step with—”

           “With your left, I know!” (Y/N) placed her right foot on the gangway and helped Cassidy up as well. “I know how the superstitions work.” Though her words had a bite, she smiled all the same, and soon she and the older woman stood in the center of the ship, talking to the sailors who had started stuffing their faces with the muffins. “Easy, gentlemen. Save some for the captain and first mate.”

           They offered her smiles and the one who’d addressed (Y/N) turned to Cassidy. “It’s good to see you again Missus Finnegan. How’s the old husband?”

           The older woman snorted. “He’s just as oafish as ever, Michael.” She shook (Y/N)’s arm. “Picking on Miss (Y/N) all the time. Rude.”

           “He’s not so bad, Cassidy. Just being a grumpy old man.” (Y/N) laughed. “Imagine if he wasn’t grumpy.”

           Cassidy pressed a hand to her chest. “Perish the thought! It’d be as if I’d married a stranger!”

           The sailors around them laughed, and Michael turned his attention to (Y/N). “Miss (Y/N), was it?” She nodded and he smiled. “How’d you come to start cleaning the captain’s home?”

           “Oh, I needed a place of employment and Cassidy and Mister Finnegan had mentioned that your captain didn’t have a staff at Fort Arsenal.”

           “Aye,” Michael agreed. “Captain Cormac spends most of his time here than he does there.”

           (Y/N) blinked, suddenly unsure as if she’d heard him correctly. “I’m sorry, did you say Corm—”

           A door opening cut her off, followed by, “Far be it from me to tell you how to do this, Captain, but I would go the other way.”

           “Why not?” said a familiar Irish voice. “I don’t see the harm in taking a few risks. Don’t you?”

           She saw a man in a navy-blue tricorn pass, followed by a man in frontiersman leathers. Then, he stepped to the side, and the sight of the third man made the basket fall from her grip, slamming into the deck with a thump.

           The contents spilled across the deck, causing them to look in the direction of it, but only one reacted, taking a step forward, voice laced with disbelief. “(Y/N)?”

           Ignoring Cassidy’s worried gaze, (Y/N) shifted on weak legs, whispering, “Shay?” There seemed to be a stretching silence growing amongst the crew who quietly watched the two stand before one another. (Y/N) raised trembling hands, gently placing them on his biceps, squeezing. “You…you’re here.”

           “Aye,” he murmured, feeling her hands drift up his shoulders to cradle his face.

           She ran her thumbs across his cheeks, and huffed a watery laugh, feeling the tears threatening to spill over. “You’re ali—” she went silent, swallowing the lump in her throat as she met his stare, lamenting, “I watched you…fall. I—” Her grip became a little tighter. “I saw you go over the edge.”

           A frown grew across Shay’s face and he reached up, placing one of his hands over hers. “Aye…you did.”

           Her lower lip trembled and she breathed, “But you’re here…you’re in front of me.” She laughed and caressed his cheek again. “And you’re clean shaven and looking like a gentleman.”

           His eyes narrowed with a certain fondness, revealing a warm smile. “Amazing what a shave and haircut can accomplish, eh?”

           (Y/N) grinned, then suddenly remembering, she faltered, questioning, “You’ve been alive all this time?” He nodded and her hands left his face for a moment, then with a sharp snap, her palm sent his head turning sideways. Gasps sounded from behind her, but she paid no mind to them, watching Shay grab his cheek and stare wide-eyed at her. “Two years,” she hissed through her tears. “Two years I have still grieved your loss and you’ve been alive all this time?” She shook her head in disbelief. “Why didn’t you try to contact me?! Let me know you were alive!”

           “I—” He started but she wasn’t having it.

           “A letter, Shay! You could’ve sent me a letter to at least to let me know you were alive! Hell, a simple message would’ve sufficed!”

           Trying to defend himself, he simply returned, “I’ve been busy!”

           (Y/N) glowered and him and reached out, shoving him backwards. “Oh! You haven’t hanged a bit, Shay Cormac! You—you Irish bastard! Always making excuses!”

           “That is not an excuse, (Y/N).” He defended.

           “Oh, piss it’s not! If anything is your specialty, it’s making excuses!” She spun on her heel, stomping towards the ramp. “And messes!”

           “Where are you going?!” He called.

           She turned and glowered at him. “I’m going to Fort Arsenal to start your dinner!”

           “You’re what?”

           “I’m going to make your dinner!” She repeated. “And when you fall over from the botulism, I’ll be happy to know that you’ve keeled over for good!” (Y/N) audibly growled as she stomped down the gangway.

           The crew and Cassidy stared at the retreating woman, and Shay trotted over to the portside and shouted, “I’m glad to see you again, lass! I’ve missed your lovely self and cruel words!”

           “You are a bastard and I hope you fall overboard!”

           Shay grinned, placing his hands on his hips. “Aye, she loves me though.”

Based upon George Washington's farewell to his officers at Fraunces Tavern on December 4th 1783.

Some headcanons shared with my old work Great Fire of New York, Here is a Health to the Company and Come Back to Me epilogue:

The friendship between Shay and Washington was based on Fort Arsenal/Washington. Connor kept Shay's tree of life badge which Cassidy Finnegan sent him. Shay brought back Haytham's sword from London. Haytham stated that Templars don't need any gravestones except Shay still needs one to cover his identity. Haytham was buried next to Shay's fake grave.

Note: to all those ppl wanted to see me drawing Shay and Connor fight against each other these years, this is my answer.

While I usually headcanon that Shay kept visiting the Finnegans from time to time ( because it makes absolutely no sense that he would just disappear from their lives after what they did for him) he started limiting his visits when he realized that his presence in their lives was just going to put them in danger. The Assassins and their gangs might be losing control over New York, but Shay has got enemies everywhere, and he just doesn’t want to risk their safety.

I also hc that it was Shay to confirm the news of Monro’s death ( because there were speculations about the Colonel’s death but nothing was certain and since he literally died in Shay’s arms he would know if he’s alive or not rip) and after he delivered them the tragic news, he bid them farewell. 

He still kept an eye on them though, but much more subtly.

Lyla Park- In the game, Lyla Park (born October 1, 1999) is Sean Diaz’s best friend and a student at Peacock High School. Sean can decide to continue to keep in touch with Lyla throughout the game or not (Characters (season 2), 2018).

Brett Foster- Brett Vaughn Foster is the antagonist in the first episode, "Roads", of Life is Strange 2, he is also Sean and Daniel’s neighbor (Characters (season 2), 2018).

Kindred Matthews- In Life is Strange 2, Kindred Matthews is a rookie law enforcement officer at the Seattle P.D. The players meet Kindred in the first episode, "Roads", where while trying to resolve a situation, he accidentally shoots Esteban Diaz and is subsequently killed himself after being thrown around by Daniel’s mysterious powers. The incident causes the rest of the events of the game to take place (Characters (season 2), 2018).

Brody Holloway- Brody Holloway or Brody is an online travel journalist and activist who meets Sean and Daniel Diaz after saving them from a racist rest stop owner in Episode 1 of Life is Strange 2. Brody talks to our protagonists about how he comes from a wealthy background in Utah but became estranged from them after becoming nomadic following his graduation from high school (Characters (season 2), 2018).

Cassidy- Lucy Rose Jones, or Cassidy, is a character, and potential love interest for Sean, in Life is Strange 2. We are introduced to her in Episode 2, when she is meets Sean and Daniel at a Christmas tree farm in Beaver Creek, Oregon. Cassidy returns in Episode 3, when the two brothers decide to join her community of drifters, nomads, wonderers, and runaways in Humboldt County, California (Characters (season 2), 2018).

Finn McNamara- Finnegan McNamara, better known as Finn, is a character, and a potential love interest for Sean, in Life is Strange 2. We are introduced to him in Episode 2, when he is meets Sean and Daniel at a local Christmas tree market in Beaver Creek, Oregon. He appears alongside his dog and a female companion named Cassidy. Finn reappears in Episode 3, when Sean and Daniel join his and Cassidy’s community of drifters, nomads, wonderers, and runaways in Humboldt County, California (Characters (season 2), 2018).

Jacob Hackerman- Jacob Samuel Hackerman (born November 6th, 1996), or Jake, is a character in Life is Strange 2. During Episode 3 of the game, he meets Sean and Daniel at a campsite in Humboldt County, California. He is part of a small community of young drifters and wonderers and works on an illegal cannabis plantation (Characters (season 2), 2018).

Lisbeth Fischer- Lisbeth Fischer is the pastor (cult leader) of the Universal Uprising Church in Haven Point, Nevada and the main antagonist in the fourth episode of Life is Strange 2. Lisbeth had decided to create the Haven Point community in Nevada after being exiled from her previous church. The community found success due to her charisma and ability to influence others via her public sermons and revivals.

She discovered Daniel’s powers soon after taking him in and interpreted his telekinesis as a holy gift from God. She began presenting his abilities to audiences through sermons and private picnics. Later on, she cut Daniel’s hair, tasked him writing passages from the Bible, and started documenting him and his power use. Lisbeth even planned to secretly adopt Daniel and stored the required papers in her office (Characters (season 2), 2018).
