Getting geared up to read some Nancy Drew books since a friend of mine gifted me a bunch.
A few years back I read The Secret of the Old Clock, so I’ll jump back in with Book 2- The Hidden Staircase by Carolyn Keene.

Really Random Rant (not a rant)
What do you guys know about The Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew. Because I-Okay, 5th grade me was in love with Frank and Joe and Nancy but like- Yeah I read all the books, but it was so I could look at the covers.
Like bring this art style back I'm obsessed
Tumblr media Tumblr media
These are the two that come to mind almost immediately. I can't describe how badly I wish I was an illustration on a 1930s mystery series.
And yeah, these series were some of the first examples of mass production ghostwriting, but like-
The artwork. A lot of artists illustrated the cover art, so if you know who did these two in particular please let me know, I'm interested in the whole vibe but the artists deserve credit in my obsession.

The Case of the Creepy Occultist, 1952
A quietly withdrawn Nancy Drew book with a character very obviously based on Aleister Crowley named Allan Crow. The plot centered on Nancy figuring out that Crow had been framed for the theft of an old book by a widow who slipped it onto his bookshelf during a costume party.
Nancy entered the dusty library with Ellen. She wore a red dress with a white collar that looked quite smart. "Hello, Mr. Crow," Ellen said. Mr. Crow smiled in the manner of a clever child and said, "You two are quite the pair. It's almost as if you knew I was trying to summon you and poof you appear." Nancy said, "We have a question about the person dressed as a harlequin at your party." "Ah, the fool! Pices going to Aries. The beginning of a journey. It's the perfect place for you to start. And it will lead you to the magician, if it hasn't already."

shoutout george payne from nancy drew, the athletic one with short hair and a man’s name, i didn’t know you were lesbian as a kid but years later i see the butchness from a mile away <3 (she canonly has a college boyfriend like the rest of the girls but shhh also later in the series they change it so george is just her name but it’s better when her given name is georgia but only her parents call her that)

I finally did Bess and George!!
I completely underestimated the amount of stuff I would find, especially for George, I didn't know I had that many jeans/pants saved in my Pinterest board
I didn't name them but I'm figuring you folks and tell who's who because Bess and George are complete opposites in style
Also, I couldn't find them on any book covers from the 2000s onward except for the ones where they're kids (and I'm trying to stick with the books and not the games or graphic novels, otherwise I would've used those)
EDIT: On the charts, 'modern' means that I don't have dates for them, I have no idea when they're from other than 2010s-2020s
Once again, all images I found are from Google and Pinterest~
