Aaaaiiieee! I've actually been tagged by the fabulous @asphodel124 to answer a fantastic question:
What makes me happy?:
*My husband, who is a freakin' SAINT, our 2 grown kids and kid-in-law
*Good Omens, of course
*The Dark Crystal (fangirling for 42 years on the film, WOWED by the series)
*Gravity Falls
*Hazbin Hotel
*Drum Corps International, my favorite is Carolina Crown
*BattleBots, fave: Minotaur
*Doctor Who
*Cosplaying/conventions
*3D arty things (cosplays, mobiles, tiny houses...whatever keeps me off the streets😄)
*goofing off with my siblings miles away via text
*Goth/spooky aesthetic, house has haunty decor all year
I am too much of a chicken to pass it on to anyone, completely due to zero self-esteem. But if you see it here and are inspired, go ahead and do so!

I was watching the Drum Corps International finals with some friends last night and all around there were some great shows, my personal favorites were Carolina Crowns-“Promethean”, Phantom Regiment-“Mynd”, Troopers-“Dance With the Devil” and, Mandarins-“Vieux Carré”
BUT
Blue Devils-“The Romantics” had music from howls moving castle soooo
(I would recommend looking all of these up on YouTube)
((+the Blue Devils-“Bust” was super cool to see as they are located really close to where I grew up up, and I even had some friends march with them this year!!!))

Hi!
So if you’re bored and looking for something cool to do, here is a list of some of my favorite DCI (drum corps) shows and a short description of each! Usually they’re about 10-12 minutes long and most of them are really entertaining!
Caged - Southwind 2019 (I was in this one!) - Long concept short, it’s about the physical and metaphorical experience of being ‘caged’. If you like Duran Duran, fire contra features, awesome high brass features, and bomb-ass trombone quartets, this is the show for you.
Goliath - Boston Crusaders 2019 - This is the story of David and Goliath told by drum corps. If you like awesome brass lines, a positively phenomenal colorguard, and Hamilton (yes, THAT Hamilton), totally watch this show. 10/10 recommend. (Also it had a really good ballad)
Wicked Games - Boston Crusaders 2017 - This is one of the first shows I got to see live, and so holds a very special place in my heart. It’s about the Salem Witch Trials and the mass paranoia during the time. Again, 10/10 recommend.
E=mc2 - Carolina Crown 2013 - Imma be real with you guys. Most of the time, Crown’s concepts go just a little bit over my head (I think it’s because I have a tendency to take things very literally and Crown tends to deal with lots of symbolism). That being said, this is probably my favorite DCI ballad of all time. Just... go watch it.
It Is - Carolina Crown 2017 - Like I just said, Crown’s concepts tend to go a little over my head. However, if you like Wicked (Yes, THAT Wicked), this has a positively magical arrangement of For Good. I cried. I literally sobbed. Anyways, go give it a watch.
The Wrong Side of the Tracks - Cavaliers 2019 (I had a friend in this one!) - A turf war I think? Regardless, all I should have to say is a MONSTER brass line and guys doing flips and throwing things. Go watch it.
Behold - The Cadets 2019 - Honestly idek it was just a really cool show man
Hell on Wheels - Music City 2018 (I had a friend in this one, too!) - Casey Jones! Trains! I cried at the end!
Neon Underground - Spirit of Atlanta 2019 (I had a friend in this one, too!) - Again, idek, it was just a REALLY cool show.
Subterra - Mandarins 2019 - Oh no it’s a cult. OH NO THEY KILLED SOMEONE! (Okay but it was a REALLY cool show with an awesome closer.)
Beast - Carolina Crown 2019 - WOAH that closer was cool
Anyways, that’s it. Go watch some cool shows. (Also I might update this list later but I dunno)

2019 Drum Corps International Championships
One of the best seasons in DCI! Congratulations to EVERYONE who marched in drum corps this year - Thank you for keeping the activity alive & well. Blue Devils took their 19th title, and the captions went to various corps this year (which was refreshing to see). This has been one of the best Top 12 corps I have seen - definitely some of the most work ever put into the activity. I still cannot believe that The Bluecoats DID NOT WIN 1st place! It was the year of The Bluecoats in my own humble opinion - don’t get me wrong I love what BD has always brought, but man.... The Bluecoats!....It was their season. BD is like the Yankees - they’ve always got some of the best players, and they deliver every single year (which is not easy), but I don’t think BD was the underdog - Bluecoats were, and I still think they were the real champions, but again, that’s just one opinion - take it or leave it. Either way it does not take away from all of the awe-inspiring work each member has put in this year.
One of my favorite years in drum corps - every corps was AWESOME. Looking forward to 2020!

1, 3, and 5 for the ask thingy
Aww thank you!
1. Favorite piece of equipment- rifle all the way!
3. Team rituals- I actually just graduated and so I’m not on my old team anymore, but on my high school guard we had the Starburst ritual, where our instructor would hand out a starburst candy to each one of us and we’d crumple up the wrapper (the “bad” in our show) and throw it away, and then eat the candy (the “good” in our show. We also all kissed our stuffed mascot right before each show!
5. Favorite drum corps/WGI guard- I am a huge Carolina Crown fan, and my dream guard is Pride of Cincinnati!

Drum Corps Disaster
I marched in the drumline from my freshman year of high school through my freshman year of college. I was good enough to be drumline captain my senior year and to get into the line at WVU, where we had the reputation as one of the best collegiate drumlines in the country. But if you want to see the absolute greatest marching bands in the world, you need to watch a Drum Corps International (DCI) show. Referred to as marching band’s major league, DCI corps take the athleticism and art of marching bands to the extreme.
So, every year, I make sure to take my family to a show. We’ve been going to the Tour of Champions in Akron, Ohio for several years. It’s hosted by the Bluecoats, one of our favorite corps, and it’s at the end of the season, right before the finals, when the corps are at their best. It usually has a number of the top ranked corps competing, such as Carolina Crown, Boston Crusaders, and The Cadets. This year’s lineup featured eight corps, and it started yesterday, August 8th, at 8:00 pm.
It was my daughter’s birthday, we had just stuffed ourselves with sushi, and it was a beautiful day, if a bit muggy. We knew there was a chance of thunderstorms in the evening, but in all the years we’ve attended, it had never been rained out. The stadium was packed.
Pacific Crest played first, as they were the lowest ranked corps. Phantom Regiment blew us away, but as they were leaving the field, the announcer asked us to leave our seats, taking cover under the stands or in our vehicles. We had been standing in the crowded stadium concourse for a good 30 minutes when the rain started, and it poured. It was still thundering as we approached 10:00, and they finally decided to cancel the show.
It was a huge disappointment. I only get to see one show a year, and this was it. I spent a lot of money on tickets and gas, a day of my vacation, and a lot of travel time (2 hours each way). There’s no refund and no rain date.
As we walked back to the car in a light drizzle, we saw members of the Bluecoat’s alumni corps hanging around in the parking garage. You see, it was their 50th anniversary, so they had assembled the largest alumni corps they’ve ever had. Over 400 people of all ages came from all over the country to participate—to give one more show. They would have brought the last performance of the night while the judges tallied up the scores. I know they all worked hard to prepare for that performance—put their hearts into it. I can imagine how they must have felt.
And just like that, I didn’t care so much about the money I paid or the miles I’d driven. My heart goes out to the Bluecoats alumni.
Bluuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuue!

losers club + marching band hcs
Tumblr media
I was thinking about trombone playing mike hanlon and got super carried away so i’ll put this under a cut
bill - was told that clarinet seemed to suit him best when testing what instrument to play but picked saxophone instead bc it was cooler  - switches to tenor saxophone after sophomore year - is always sunburned - is a section leader by his senior year and takes his job very seriously - kind of - he still gets into plume fights with richie after halftime shows at football games (and stan yells and chases them because you're not supposed to touch the plumes without gloves tHOSE ARE REAL FEATHERS) - he's never ever had to sit out/gone to the med tent and he's very proud of that fact - even that one time that he really should have bc he tripped and skinned both of his knees rly bad and was bleeding all over himself - has a saxophone solo during the ballad his senior year - has the most supportive family ever - they're that group of people that yells "we love you bill!" in the silence after the announcer but before the band starts - all of the freshmen really love him and give him a special present at band banquet senior year
beverly - she's a cymbal girl! - talks a lot during practice but she's sneaky about it so she doesn't get in trouble - usually wears those tank tops with really long cutouts down the sides and a colorful sports bra - learns drill really fast - always wears sunglasses - gets a really bad sunglasses tan on her face like reverse raccoon eyes completely outlined in new freckles - hypes everyone up by yelling encouragements when practice gets slow - reminds all her friends to stay hydrated - she's the main reason the percussion bus is always called the party bus - always ropes the losers into going to mcdonalds or ihop after football games - is somehow always the first person in the band hall on competition days, even if report time is something super early like 4am - requests the cha cha slide at band banquet and even the band director joins in
ben - plays bassoon during concert season - double reed instruments can't march tho so the band director asks him to march sousaphone because he's so Big and Strong  - the sousaphone is heavy as all heck and at first ben really isn't sure about this - he gets the hang of it - he even starts learning how to play it a little bit - by the end of the season he's good enough to play in the show - by the end of high school he's a master at both instruments - has a farmer's tan so strong that richie claims it probably has magic powers - the low brass and the battery are always really close to each other so he and bev always race each other to their water jugs and back during water breaks - bev usually wins - sometimes richie will help and hold bev back so ben can get to his spot first - ben asks beverly to band banquet freshman year and she says yes, and they go to it together all four years
mike - plays trombone and is amazing - becomes the trombone section leader his sophomore year - becomes a drill instructor for the entire low brass his junior year - is head drum major his senior year - his salute before their performance is fierce - he likes being drum major but he found actually marching in the show to be more fun - plans on going to school to be a music teacher but wants to do some drum corps first - (he makes it into madison scouts for a year, then goes to carolina crown) - he, beverly, and bill get really into the football games - is on the uniform committee with stan and mostly tries to keep stan from yelling at the freshmen when they hang up their pants wrong - he's literally always in a practice room, even when the band hall is supposed to be closed - he and richie always imitate that 'dad on trombone, kid on oven' vine (richie's snare drum sounds enough like an oven) when they're walking back inside from practice bc it makes bev laugh
stan - first chair flute player - his marching technique is impeccable but he never tries out for a leadership position so he never gets one - complains a lot about the heat or his feet hurting or being sweaty - still prefers marching season to concert season tho bc he hates his private lesson teacher - she's the reason he threatens to quit every year (he never actually does) - he's the head of the uniform committee and actually does take that job very seriously - all the freshmen go to other members of the committee for uniform checks because stan gets scary - "how fucking hard is it to make sure that when you hang your uniform jacket there's one shoulder pad on each side of the hanger???" jfc - if they're on a bus going somewhere, stan is definitely asleep - stan's favorite sets in the show are the ones where he's close enough to see bill out of the corner of his eye - he somehow trips on the power cord for the synthesizer almost every day - cries after his last performance
richie - percussion obvs - plays in the battery instead of the pit, and is on the snare drum - ends up becoming center snare player his senior year - turns out he and mike have amazing chemistry and the band is never out of time from the battery ever again - he loves doing rim shots rly late at night when they're coming back inside after games/performances and everyone curses at him - has passed out/nearly passed out on the field at least once every year because of heat exhaustion - threw up the first day of practice freshman year because he had cereal for breakfast - is one of those boys that refuses to cut his hair, so beverly has to put it up or braid it before they have performances to keep it all inside of his shako - is always the one to get in trouble for PDA because nobody believes him when he says that no really eddie started it, he was the one kissing me it's not my fault - (doesn't complain tho) - gets extremely competitive at marching competitions - has worn the same ratty pair of tennis shoes all four years
eddie - doesn't play an instrument! is in the colorguard - good on flag, best on rifle, doesn't do sabre much - every single lowerclassmen (and some upperclassmen) are afraid of eddie "step on my silk and i will kill you" kaspbrak - wears a bandana, a fanny pack, and short shorts to practice - is the kid in the band with the insane watch tan (the skin underneath looks fucking translucent) - no one is ever sure if he'll be there or not next year because his mom always wants him to quit - argues with ben about swing flags whenever they're put in the show (ben thinks they're pretty, eddie things the choreo for them is way too boring) - is the best in the guard at show makeup but can't help with hair to save his life - had a wild time at band banquet he loved it - tried to teach richie how to do drop spins on a rifle one time but richie somehow hit himself in the face and broke his glasses

My Favorite Drum Corps Show
If you have not heard of what Drum & Bugle Corps is - Do yourself a favor and start looking it up now.
It’s NOT the same as the live experience (WAY too much POWER in a drum corps for any device to capture - Take my word for it).
So, I marched drum corps years ago (due to my love for music, then band, then marching band, and then the rest is history) and it was one of the most difficult and yet most gratifying experiences of my life (aside from adulthood LOL!!!) and I encourage anyone who is reading this and is thinking of either becoming a musician or having their child or a friend or anyone they know who is really into music - Tell them about Drum Corps (pronounced “Core” not “Corpse”).
Drum & Bugle Corps basically took what my high school marching band program had already established and it took it a LEAP forward. I mean, we toured the U.S., PAID a ton of money to do it (Thank you, Mom & Dad), and we had to work ALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL THE TIME!
Weird tan-lines galore, there’s a WHOLE subculture out there - almost a friggin’ CULT (I swear man) of really, really AWESOME and CRAZY kids out there (and even more insane instructors and tech’s who are all trying to get their careers as Educators or what-have-you all started up to share the gift of music & the marching arts - YES it’s an art-form, ABSOLUTELY - 100%).
If I were to belong to any cult - It would be Drum Corps (LMFAO!).
Origins of a ton of these corps dates back decades, and I’m talking some of them started from the Military Bugle Corps from wars - and others starts from Churches, Scout Troops (Boys Troops and Girls Troops to maintain the Scout Standard), Police Departments, etc.
I first came across drum corps because I happened to be flippin’ through channels, and I was like a freshman and I had JUST finished my first year in marching band (proudly/we did a rendition of Crossmen’s 1992 show, “Songs For Planet Earth” - AMAZING show and I had the honor to be in that show - still makes me cry every time I hear the closer because that show required SO MUCH HEART) - and there it was - Santa Clara Vanguard’s 1999 show.
I ran to grab a video tape, and I came back just in time to record Blue Devils’ show “Rhythms... At The Edge of Time” which I watched over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over again - I’m talkin’ like I could not believe there were people who were literally doing what I thought was IMPOSSIBLE.
With the most insane irony (or maybe it was fate) - I ended up being taught by Gino Cipriani, Wayne Downey, and like Jeff Sacktig, and like it was a variety staff like a real motley crew ya know? It was a DREAM TEAM staff - and my dreams came true - and I will never forget how much it meant to me to be able to march with friends from my high school (some who had already graduated before I could march with them at high school) and have my band director there the whole time and like - it was just such a dream come true. We ended up breaking the mold of the class divisions (Magic of Orlando Drum and Bugle Corps - Division II World Champions with record breaking score of 99.05 - which the Cavies happened to break 99 AFTER us LOL like we had A DAY where we made history and had the highest score in Drum Corps International HISTORY!) and the funny thing is - I remember at the beginning of the season we literally were trying to get everybody and their brother (and sister lol) to JOIN because we had like NOBODY lol!
Well, we had a good size corps, but there were patches missing in some sections ya know? I mean, there was literally a camp when we had 9 Trumpets and Gino was like “Yeah... We’re gonna have to do something about this” because this guy came from like The Cadets who had been DCI Div 1 champs like a ton, and prior to that he friggin’ was the brass caption for BD - I’m like - Dude, yeah, the staff and Kim & Rod were the necessary Leadership required to make Magic happen in 2002 (after not being on-field for like 2 whole consecutive years).
Either way, when I marched, I was not able to afford any more seasons, so Magic 2002 was and still is one of the biggest blessings in my life (aside from my family of course) and like if it was not for my really crazy summer that year - I wouldn’t have the mindset that the impossible CAN be Possible. Good things can happen to people if they put their hearts and minds to it...
...So...We were truly the “Cinderella Corps” of that year, and yeah I know we dropped from 10th to 11th for Finals but honestly - that accident with the Tenor Drummer who had his drums fall on his face when he fell on his back during finals - that literally NEVER happened all year. We were undefeated all season, no one expected us to make finals - even on our brass bus like we were talking about how some of the staff was even makin’ a pool of whether or not we made finals - whether that was true or not, it was a necessary motivator to push us and you know what? We did it. And the rest, as they say, is history. I left drum corps and the marching activity years ago - I tried a DCA corps and ended up getting burned badly from them - so bad that I just turned my back and walked away from drum corps and decided to never look back.
...Until I saw Carolina Crown’s 2013 show. I was inspired again. I had never heard a BRASSLINE that was SO AMAZING. Literally, BECAUSE OF THIS SHOW - my faith in drum corps had been restored. I only wish I could have seen this corps live - it must have been an absolute DREAM to be in this corps and in this show.
Carolina Crown was always a corp I paid attention to, although I always admired other corps more (BD 96-99 OH and PHANTOM & MADISON 1996!, need I say more?) - anyway, I actually used to live in South Carolina (a piece of my heart is still in South Carolina to this day - very, very fond memories of my childhood there/one of the places I was stationed). So, needless to say, I was always keeping my eye on Crown, and I have friends who marched Crown - but, I knew there was a very powerful change when I saw them in 2008 in Atlanta - the first time I ever saw a corps that pleased me as a drum corps nut more than BD - of course Phantom was AMAZING (”I AM SPARTACUS!”) - but I remember a bud of mine David was marching Tuba in Crown and I always gave props like DUDE Crown’s brassline - HOLY SHIT (LOL!)
I could go ON and ON about that BRASSLINE. They are SO beyond amazing - especially this year, 2013! THEIR BRASS LINE LITERALLY GOT A PERFECT SCORE AND THEY REMAIN THE BEST BRASS SECTION IN DCI HISTORY - uh yeah - THAT’s saying something considering how much detail-oriented work goes into these shows just on an individual level, let alone a massive level of epic proportions with the size of the corps these days.  .....Every Time I hear this brass section, I just start to melt - I’m like.. “I want to go to there” lol!...I am TELLING you.. This show inspires me every time I watch it - I literally have PHYSICAL REACTIONS to this SHOW! ...Like - I swear...that brass line performance.... I’ve had orgasms (LMFAO!!!) ...ANYYYY WAYYYYY  hhahaha I highly recommend watching the entire FINALS show on Youtube (ya got like 10 minutes? lol “LET ‘ER RIP!”) and seriously - even though I’m not too huge on the narration in drum corps these days and the over-saturation of certain effects - I gotta say - this is one of those drum corps...it’s just like... poetry.
...You know how certain things just like, transcend their normality? Does that make sense? Like...  In my humble and personal opinion - Drum Corps exists so that this show could have been made. This is one of many, many, many fine shows, but for me personally - this show is ELECTRIC (and like really profound). Even if you’re a die-hard drum corps dude like me (WHADDUP PEEPS?!), go ahead and like check out the friggin’ announcements and the crowd reaction from when Crown WON Finals Night! It is absolutely breath-taking because for any drum corps kids, we all dream of being Champions. We all strive for Perfection, and we always catch Excellence in the process.
It always makes me get like super emotional when I think about Crown winning, and it’s just so nice to know that the underdog can win, too. And, just knowing that those kids put their whole heart and faith into their work and their teamwork (a truly remarkable group) and they walked away Champions is absolutely wonderful. And the icing on the cake was how the corps was represented in receiving the Trophy, by their Drum Major, Linda Harvey - she was just so classy, and down-to-earth, and had such poise, and exemplified how honorable a Champion can be when it’s their turn to be number 1.
God bless Carolina Crown, God Bless everybody who has ever volunteered, watched a drum corps show, supported by investing in the youth programs for kids like me who believe in music and the power of inspiration and giving an audience something worth enjoying. Without drum corps, I would not have been able to believe in myself as a Musician today.
- ATOMIK 1
P.S. It has always been a dream of mine to one day own my own Drum Corps. I was always like, how would I do it if I ever had the opportunity to have my own corps - and I decided - I would totally have it be like Star of Indiana - you know, I’ll be like an older dude who’s got the bread and then I’ll just make sure it’s a well-oiled machine - and then have the quality of Star, but be designed like Velvet Knights (LOL!!!! YES!!!!) ESPECIALLY because they were the most FUN drum corps on the field and literally went the zany and quirky route instead of the super serious and militant way (and dorks like me rejoiced hahaha). ...chuck taylors and all LOL.

Carolina Crown Drum & Bugle Corps
youtube
Carolina Crown (based in Fort Mill, South Carolina) is my personal favorite and one of the finest drum corps in the acitivity. Here’s some footage from last season, with an Outstanding show called “Beneath The Surface.”
This corps is truly inspiring. Crown’s contributions on the field throughout the years has helped shape the activity as we know it today. This corps never ceases to amaze me. There have been so many absolutely awe-inspiring moments that have come from this corps - with such power & finesse. I have seen this corps grow through the decades and I am so happy for this organization’s accomplishments throughout the years. I have friends who have marched in Crown in various years and all Crown folks are really, really cool (that kinda goes with most drum corps folks anyhow; well for the most part - such is life right?). This corps deserves all of it’s success & praise. Absolutely Awesome.

Carolina Crown
My Favorite Drum Corps! Last year their show could have easily tied for the Bronze medal (in my opinion), although SCV also had a killer show. Crown’s POWER is undeniable (as well as their finesse). One of my favorite openers ever (especially with that wall of sound - Good Lord). THIS is why people come to see Drum Corps - you cannot find that type of musical energy anywhere else.
SO stoked for DCI 2020! Looking forward to Crown’s show (as well as every other corps out there). HYPIN’ it!

The OTHER brassline that makes me DROOL. Still one of my favorite moments in DCI Brasslines - Carolina Crown in 2013 with that SWEET tuning exercise (the end is what makes it SO worth it). This is the moment that made me come back to loving drum corps!
