Y/n did not mind mornings. She had come across quite a few humans who insisted mornings were the worst time of the day, about how they preferred night.
Most faeries would agree, considering they slept during the day and worked at night. But Y/n, she loved mornings. She could get some peace to herself, some quiet that seemed to betray her when her soldiers, male and female alike, were awake. It was just quiet chatter, but it still got on her nerves sometimes.
Y/n always got herself up a few hours before sunset to have some time to herself, to practise her fighting skills, to think.
Y/n also knew Cardan liked to sleep. Most of the time, he had no option but to sleep off his hangovers after drinking the whole night, but even when that wasn't the case, he would never wake up while the sun was still out without a reason.
So when Y/n snuck out of Herb’s tent in the afternoon, the sun beating down on her as she went, it was a huge surprise to Y/n to find Cardan sitting on her bed, wide awake.
She paused at the threshold of her tent, the flap fluttering shut behind her as she processed the sight. "Cardan? You’re up early."
He smiled, though it did not reach his eyes. "Yeah. I’ve been up for some time now." He paused, glancing down at Y/n’s boots. It was a thing he used to do, when he was feeling vulnerable but did not want her to see. "Waiting… for you."
Y/n’s blood slowed in her veins before rushing again, and she sighed, stepping forward and making her way towards the chair in the corner.  "I was sleeping, Cardan."
"Where?" His response was quick, sharp, as if he had been thinking of it since he woke up. It made Y/n freeze in her tracks, her eyes growing slightly wide.
"Uh… in a soldier’s tent?"
He stood. "Why?"
Y/n blinked. "What do you mean why? My bed was occupied, so-"
"So now you can’t even stand my presence?" He laughed.
Y/n stared at him, at a loss for words. She looked at him closely, noting the gauntness in his pale cheeks, he shadows under his eyes.
Sure, he had all those before, but the hollows seemed deeper, the shadows darker. "I never said that, Cardan. And I would never be intolerable to your presence."
He scoffed. "Right, that’s why you’ve been running away and avoiding returning to Insmire for so long."
Y/n sighed, rubbing her face. "It’s nothing against you, Cardan-"
"Then why have you been avoiding me since I arrived?! I’ve been trying to talk to you, I’ve tried so many times! Why are you running away from me?!" He snapped, his voice rising.
And Y/n froze completely.
Cardan never yelled. That was something Y/n had grown up with. No matter what, Cardan never yelled. He would drink, he would party, he would revel, hell, he’d bed people just to forget his frustrations. But he never yelled.
And never at Y/n.
It broke her will to care.
"Because if I don’t, I might just kill myself!"
He stilled, his eyes wild as he stared back at her, his chest heaving. Y/n stepped forward, closer and closer to him. His gaze tracked her movements, almost predatory.
"Do you know, Cardan, how much pain I have been in everyday since I realised that you would never look at me like I look at you?" He said nothing, his eyes wide. "Everyday, I’d put on a smile, act like I have not been in love with you since I understood what love was, and watched as you did all that you did, as you revelled and ruined your own reputation, as you acted like you loved all those females you bedded."
Y/n finally stopped a foot from him, jabbing her finger into his chest, fury blazing in her heart. "I was there as you watched your mother ignore you, I was there to comfort you, I was there as you shattered every time after her rejection. I was there when you wanted Jude, I was right there helping you out with her. I listened to every detail you provided of your love life, trying to hold myself together, and you just couldn’t see it."
Y/n shook her head, smiling. "You could never see it, you were too busy making eyes at others to notice me. And yes, if you’re going to ask me if running away was necessary, yes it was. Because I could no longer bear to watch you be in love with Jude while I stared at you like a lovesick puppy. It was eating me alive from the inside. And I couldn’t tell you about it either, because I saw how in love with Jude you were, and I never wanted to get in the way of your happiness. You know why? Because I care about you, Cardan. I care about you."
He stared at Y/n, looking like he was about to cry as she panted, her blood chilling as she realised what she had just done.
"Y/n, I-"
Y/n stumbled back, her heart beating in her throat.
The beating slowed.
Her hearing diminished.
Or maybe the birds stopped chirping. She didn’t know.
She didn’t care.
This was a panic attack, she was sure of it.
This was the first one she was having in years. The last time was when Y/n had realised she loved Cardan and had almost blurted it out at him, but stopped just before he could hear it, and then he had left with a pretty nymph on his arm.
Even back then, he had not paid any attention to her as he led the female away, already beginning to kiss her before they were even out of sight.
And she had made it a mission that she never had any other panic attacks ever again. And if she did, she’d not create a scene, especially not in front of Cardan.
So she took another step back, her heartbeat thudding in her ears, slow, unsteady, and then turned and sprinted out of her tent, her only focus her horse, Toad.
And the moment the horse was in her arms reach, she swung herself onto the mare’s back and rode away, tears beginning to gather in her eyes.
She heard him calling after her.
Maybe Herb would keep Cardan away. Keep him from following her.
But did she want him to?
No.
Yes.

PART ONE | PART TWO
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Cardan’s tail swished at his feet. From across the room, he watched as you danced with Jude. A smile tugged at his lips. His wife and his best friend. What luck he had been afforded for the two incredible women in his life to get along so well? He knew, of course, that you would. In your time at school, you often admonished Cardan for any cruel tricks he played on Jude. She didn’t deserve that treatment, you’d always say. Be better, because I know you can be. You were the only person he would allow to speak to him like that. After all, you were the only person who thought him above the part he played. If all of Elfhame thought him cruel, you saw him for he truly was. Jude, eventually, came to see that too—both your kindness and the mask Cardan wore.
You caught his eye and smiled. Cardan watched as you took Jude’s hand, gently urging her out of the swarm of dancing fae. She smiled appreciatively at you. It was difficult for humans to find their way out of these revels. If you were not watching out for her, Jude might have danced until she died.
“You didn’t have to stop,” Cardan said as you approached him. Jude slipped away to the refreshment table.
“I cannot stand to be apart from you. I’ve had enough of a fill of that for a lifetime,” you said. Cardan’s heart soared. Your arms wrapped around his waist, and your head came to rest against his chest. “Besides, I think Jude was beginning to tire.”
“I do not plan to let you stray from my side for a long time.” Cardan’s tail wrapped around you and pulled you closer. If Cardan could achieve it, he would mould you against him so that you never could leave again. “I am glad you and Jude are friends now. She has so few she feels she can trust.”
“As am I.” Your smile faltered for a moment. So quick that Cardan might not have noticed it if he hadn’t committed himself to memorizing every part of you. He reached up, thumb tugging at the corner of your lips so that the smile might remain in place. “May I confess something?”
“Anything.”
You took a breath. You did not speak immediately. Instead, you took the time to straighten the crown that rested against his brow. “I left because I thought Jude was the one you cared for. After you were crowned High King, you were seldom from her side. It broke my heart to think that I had lost your favor. I would step aside for your happiness, but I could stand by and watch it happen.”
Cardan’s tail wrapped tighter around you. You would not run again, but he couldn’t stop the fear from sinking deep into his veins. “I was scared that you would not like the crown I wore. Jude took a liking to tell me how ridiculous I was acting. Truthfully, I think she liked that too much because it was the one thing that we could always agree.”
“Why did you wait so long then?”
Cardan laughed. “I may have agreed with Jude that I was being ridiculous, but it did little to quell the fear that you would not want me.”
“Well, whatever she said to convince you to act, I am grateful. Even if it did send me running.” You pressed a soft kiss to his lips. Cardan smiled. “In some ways, I think we both needed it. Who knows how long we may have skirted around our feelings still.”
He combed your fingers through your hair and pulled you in for a searing kiss. He loved this. He loved being your husband. Cardan no longer had to pace the floors of the palace, wondering if he could confess to you his feelings. He no longer had to dream of what it would feel for you to be in his arms, for it was now his reality. And as you moaned against his mouth, Cardan decided he would commit every moment of his long life to bringing you as much pleasure as you have already brought him. It was his duty as your husband after all.
“Let us retire,” he said, parting from you long enough for a breath.
“It is our wedding celebration. People will talk if we leave too soon,” you said, but your voice was filled with enough lust that he knew you didn’t truly mean a single word.
“Let them talk, and let Jude run them through with her sword for disrespecting their Queen and King.”
You smiled up at him, and Cardan stole another kiss. “Whisk me away, my love.”
The entire walk up to your shared chambers, Cardan’s tail swished behind him in excitement.
Tumblr media
Sex and nakedness are not regarded the same in Faerie as it is in the human lands. Yet, watching as Cardan undressed before you had you positively giddy. It had you even forgetting that you were supposed to undress, too, until your husband was reaching around you, skillfully undoing the laces of your dress with his nimble fingers.
“You are beautiful,” you whisper, running your hand down his chest to his stomach. “The most beautiful person I have ever seen.”
Cardan grinned. “And to think you tried to deprive yourself of such beauty,” he teased. He kissed your brow, dragged his lips down to your ear. His breath was warm as he whispered, “I should be quite upset, you know, that you tried to deprive me of your beauty.”
Wordlessly, you sank down to your knees. The wood was cool against your skin. A nice contrast to how warm your arousal was making you. Cardan watched you, his mouth falling open to release a shuddering breath as you took his cock in your hands. “Shall I repent, my husband?”
His throat bobbed as he swallowed. Any sign of his teasing had disappeared the moment you touched him. You wondered if he had always been so affected by you. You wondered how blind you must have been to miss it for all these years. “You may do to me as you please,” he breathed out.
Your tongue darted out, wetting your lips, before you took him into your mouth. As you looked up at your husband through your lashes, Cardan looked as though he might just fall apart under your touch. Pride settled in your veins. Neither you nor Cardan were strangers to pleasures of the flesh, but you were certain that no one could make him feel as you were now. You released him with a pop! and began to kiss down his length.
Cardan’s fingers found purchase in your hair. His grip tightened as you ran your tongue up the underside of his cock, taking time to flick over a rather prominent vein. But before you could take him fully in your mouth again, Cardan was pulling you away, gently nudging you back to your feet.
“Was that not to your liking, husband?” you asked, though you already knew the answer.
“I will not allow you to steal all the fun, wife,” he said. Cardan gathered you in his arms, carrying you the short distance to the bed and laid you down. He settled between your legs, which he had hiked over his shoulders. You reached down, brushing stray curls from his eyes. “It is my wedding night, too, after all.”
“Ah, yes, but what is that the humans say? Happy wife, happy life?”
Jude had been quite happy to share that one little line with you. Having grown up in Faerie, there was little she remembered from her time in the human lands. But she remembered that, and she shared it with you so that you could add it to your arsenal of things to make Cardan putty in your hands.
“Oh, I fully intend to make you happy,” Cardan declared before diving in.
Cardan ate your cunt as if he were a starved man. His tongue lapped at you, collecting your arousal as if it were the sweet nectar of an everapple. Just as he had you, your hand found its own wound through his silky curls. But where he had pulled you away, you drew him in closer. You could feel his smirk when he took your sensitive bud between his lips.
You breathed out his name, chanted it as if it were the most precious oath. Recited it as though it were your vows to him. A cord deep in your stomach began to tighten, tauter and tauter until it finally snapped. Your chants became a scream.
Your husband emerged from your trembling thighs with a triumphant smile. He crawled up your body until he was draped over you like a blanket. Safe and secure within his arms. Cardan’s forehead rest against yours. His breath tickled your face, but you found delight in the sensation. His every breath was yours, and so yours were his.
“I feel as though I am in debt to you,” you teased. “How can you let me finish, but not allow me the same pleasure?”
Cardan smiled. His tail dipped between your bodies, wrapped itself around your leg. “Your debt shall be paid soon enough,” he swore.
You barely processed Cardan pressing his cock into you until the gasp escaped your lips. It had been a long while since you laid with anyone. You had forgotten how delicious that stretch felt. Acting of their own accord, your legs locked around his hips, keeping his thrusts shallow as he began to move. You pulled Cardan in for another kiss and did not let him pull away.
His moans melted into your own. “I love you,” he chanted. His fingers intertwined with your own. “I adore you. I am yours to command.”
“Mm, don’t stop,” you said. And as though he were yours to command, he did as told, his thrusts beginning to grow sloppy. “I love you.”
Cardan gasped, and you felt him finish. He continued to thrust into you, one hand leaving yours to press against the still sensitive bud. He rolled it between his fingers, urging that taught cord to snap again. As though you were his to command, it did, and the tidal wave of ecstasy washed over your once more.
“I love you!” you shouted, because nothing better encapsulated this feeling than those three simple words.
Your husband came to rest against your chest, his ear pressed against the spot above your heart. He nipped at the skin of your breast until you scratched your nails against his scalp. His tail had unwound itself from your thigh, taking to swish softly in the air above you.
“I am glad I came home to you,” you said. “I am glad you did not let me stay away.”
Cardan lifted his head, a sleepy smile tugged at his lips. “I would run after you every day if it meant I got to have you in my arms for even a moment.”
“I shall never run again,” you swore.
“But then whom shall I chase through the palace?”
“I may run then,” you conceded.
Content, Cardan rested against your chest once more. His breaths soon turned shallow, and a quiet snore echoed through the room. You followed soon after, because there was nothing in this life you would do without your husband at your side.

Cardan glared sharply across the room as some man stood before y/n. He’d noticed the way the man had approached her, the man’s hungry eyes scanning her body. It was enough to make Cardan want to charge across the room and have him arrested over just looking at his queen that way. But Cardan forced himself to behave and instead glared as intensely as he could.
Cardan watched y/n try to excuse herself from the man. His eyes scrutinizing the way the man stepped around her to keep her attention. Cardan rose slightly from his seat until he saw y/n give the man a fake smile and step around him. He slowly lowered himself back into boss seat, but his eyes never left the man. Not even a as y/n made her way back to Cardan with their crystal glasses in her hands.
As yn reached the table, she saw the way Cardan was shooting daggers at someone. Following his eye sight, yn noticed the man from the counter was still standing where she’d left him. Yn spun back around and slid into her seat beside Cardan, grabbing his closest hand in hers. “Honey?” She questioned softly as she set the glasses down.
Cardan glanced over at y/n briefly before his gaze snapped back to the man. “He looked at you funny” was the only thing Cardan was able to mutter. He heard y/n sigh softly as she squeezed his hand. Cardan sighed as well and shook his head as his willed his eyes to leave the man.
“I’m sure it’s nothing” y/n stated calmly.
“It looked like he was trying to check you out" Cardan huffed, once again glaring over at the man in question.
Y/n shrugged, hoping her nonchalant response would make him calm down. “Okay, so?” She asked softly, playing with his fingers as she sipped on her drink. Y/n knew he wasn’t giving up that easily when she saw he still hadn’t touched his own drink yet.
“So, does he not know we’re together?” Cardan asked, his lips pursed as he clenched his jaw. He knew y/n would never betray him. But, Cardan couldn’t help the fact he was mad the man didn’t seem to know y/n was with him. After all, Cardan wanted everyone to know that. So it suggested he wasn’t doing a good job of showing how proud he was that she was his and he was hers.
Y/n hummed softly, setting her drink down as she turned to face him. “Cardan,” she whispered, playing with the loose curls hanging by his right temple. “You don’t need to worry” y/n promised, letting her fingers trail down his cheeks as they slipped from the curl. “I told him that you and I are together as soon as he asked me out” she swore, stroking his sharp jawline.
Cardan leaned into her warm and comforting touch, his tense features relaxing slightly. “But, why didn’t he alr-“ he began, cutting himself off as he stiffly straightened his posture suddenly. Cardan’s storming eyes rushed over to y/n’s face , “wait..! What? He what?!”.
Y/n nibbled on her bottom lip and sighed, “Cardan-“.
Cardan shook his head, his varying emotions flickering in his wide eyes. “He asked you out” He muttered, still in disbelief. Was this man truly that ignorant or moronic?
“I said no, obviously” y/n calmly spoke, fingers dancing over his face again.
Cardan huffed and stood up, glaring across the room again. “How didn’t he know we were together?” He asked aloud. However, just as y/n was about to respond, Cardan continued. “Do I need to show you off more?” He wondered, his leg bouncing under him.
Y/n watched Cardan as his brows furrowed as he continued to stare harshly over towards the man she’d met earlier. She’d never seen him this upset over something like this. Although, to be fair, most people knew her heart belonged to Cardan and didn’t try to change that.
Nevertheless, she couldn’t believe he was so impacted over the man asking a single question. Y/n suppressed a smirk as she moved to block Cardan’s view. She shook her head playfully as she placed her hands on his chest. “No way... you're actually jealous” y/n pointed out, watching the emotions bouncing in his beautiful eyes.
“Jealous? Me? No” Cardan huffed loudly, squinting at y/n.
Y/n raised a questioning eyebrow at him, “right… sure.”
“You know I cannot lie y/n” Cardan reminded her, before sighing. He shook his head and wrapped his arms around y/n tightly. “I’m not jealous, I'm territorial. Jealous is when you want something that's not yours. Territorial is protecting what's already yours” Cardan explained, staring into her y/e/c eyes.
Y/n frowned slightly, “you don’t trust me to stay yours?”
“It's not you l don't trust” Cardan admitted, tucking a few wisps of her hair behind her ear.
“He doesn’t matter. I love you and only you, Cardan. Nothing will ever change that” y/n promised, smiling as she leaned in to place a tender kiss on his cheek.
Cardan grinned and used his thumb to softly guide her chin closer to his mouth. “I love you too” He whispered lovingly. Cardan then crooked his head and placed a needy kiss to her lips. His grin grew as y/n kissed back with just as much passion.
Tumblr media
“Please, let it go” y/n groaned, running her hand through her hair as she stared at Cardan. She knew he was still jealous territorial. But he was overreacting and it was starting to become tiresome.
Cardan grumbled, “oh come on, you and I both know what he was doing”. His mind replaying the event in his mind. He couldn’t believe the man had tried once again to get y/N’s attention. It hadn’t worked, but Cardan was still pissed.
“It’s not a big deal, just ignore him” y/n argued with a shrug. She couldn’t care less what the man wanted, said, or did. Y/n’s only concern was on keeping Cardan calm and happy. Yet, the whole ordeal was making it difficult as Cardan wouldn’t ignore him.
Cardan silently paced back and forth before his throne. He was trying to form a way to end this man’s attempts. Usually y/n handled the punishments and sanctions for the kingdom, so this wasn’t Cardan’s speciality. “I could have him beheaded” He spoke in a monotonous tone.
“Cardan no” y/n scolded, standing up from her throne and making her way to him.
“Yes, I could. I’m the King, love” Cardan argued, turning to face her.
Y/n chuckled softly, “I’m aware of that. But, that’s overkill”. She reached up and tenderly began rubbing his tense temples with her thumbs. Y/n smiled to herself as she watched Cardan start to crumble at her touch.
“That’s the point” Cardan mumbled weakly. Despite his frustration towards the man, y/n’s touch was making him soften. His eyelashes batted against his cheeks as he felt himself grow tired as she massaged his temples.
“Cardan” y/n whispered very lowly, thumbs still working on his temples. She leaned in and placed a kiss between his brows, “He doesn’t matter”. Y/n lowered her hands from his head and grabbed his hands, “can you come to bed now?”
Cardan huffed at the mention of the other guy but quickly switched gears. He nodded and let y/n lead him to their bedroom. “I’m the only one who gets to, right?” Cardan sleepily asked, his hand holding hers tightly. He smiled widely and hummed when y/n responded with her beautiful laughter and a soft ‘yes’.
Tumblr media
Cardan pulled y/n to his chest, his lips in her hair as he breathed deeply. “I’m sorry” He whispered Cardan pressed a quick peck to her scalp, “I got protective…”.
Y/n hummed and giggled. Shaking her head, she snuggled into Cardan’s embrace, “that’s an understatement”. Y/n tilted her head up to look at him as she teased, “I've never seen you that mad before."
“I’ve been mad over foolish men making advances towards you before” Cardan argued, pulling their blanket over her shoulders.
“No Cardan, not like that. Not even when I was being hit on by that weird guy that was one of Locke’s friends” y/n pointed out, raising her brows knowingly at him.
Cardan sighed loudly and shrugged. “They at least knew that they didn’t have a chance” He defended quietly.
“Neither does this guy Cardan, you know that right?” Y/n questioned, sitting up so she could look into his eyes.
Cardan gave her a gentle smile and nodded, “I do. Doesn’t mean I like him trying so hard”.
Y/n nodded and lowered her head back to his chest, “he’ll stop soon enough when he sees it’ll get him nowhere. Now get some sleep handsome”.
Cardan hummed and kissed the top of her head again. “Yes darling, goodnight my love”.
Tumblr media
“I’m warning you, you’ll want to stop” Cardan spoke. His voice was professional despite his burning desire to throw the man before him into a lake and tie him to a heavy rock.
“I’m afraid I do not know of what you speak” The man argued, a smirk on his lips as he watched Cardan closely.
Cardan rose from his throne, holding his head at the precise angle to cause the sun light to glimmer of his crown and into the man’s eyes. As the man shaded his eyes with his hand, Cardan held his head high and neared him. “You would be wise to stop making advances towards y/n” Cardan advised.
The man huffed loudly as he lowered his hand to his side. “Why is that?” He questioned, tilting his head mockingly at the King.
"She’s not up for grabs” Cardan all-but growled. “Keep your dirty hands off my crown” he ordered. He was quickly losing his patience with his man. Cardan had promised y/n he’d handle the matter civilly. But if this man kept up his behavior, Cardan wasn’t sure he could keep to his promise.
“I’m not interested in your crown, I’m after-“ The man argued. “
“I know what you’re after” Cardan barked as he glared sharply at the man. “She is my crown, you fool” he spat. “If you think I’m going to just step aside and let your filthy hands try to touch her, you couldn’t be more wrong” Cardan proclaimed, stepping even closer.
“All due respect your Highness… Maybe you should pick your battles. I fear this is one you’re not going to win. Perhaps you should realize it’s not worth the fight“ The man smugly stated. Despite his lower status, it was evident this guy saw himself as far superior to Cardan. But, that wasn’t what truly set Cardan off. Instead, it was the notion that he suggested y/n wasn’t worth fighting for.
Cardan stalked closer, his piercing eyes now mere feet from the man’s. “See, that’s where you’re wrong” he declared confidently. “I may not be worthy of her, but I’m not afraid to continuously strive to be” Cardan admitted, t’sking at him.
“She's not the kind of woman you choose your battles for. Y/n is the kind of woman you fight to the death for” Cardan stated as he stepped even closer. “You would be wise not to doubt my willingness to throw my life away to remain by her side” He concluded, his hot breath hitting the face of the man standing before him. Just as Cardan was about to give an official order for the man to leave his town, y/n’s voice sounded from across the hall.
“That will not be necessary” y/n stated loudly, making her presence known. She’d been watching from her secret spot above them; a place Cardan and her spies had shown her. However, as she saw the situation going sideways, she quietly snuck down and landed behind the curtain that hung at the back of their thrones.
Cardan’s flushed face turned towards her as she stepped into view. His eyes showed his deep sorrow that he had slightly deviated from the formal proceedings he was to be doing. But as Cardan watched y/n approach, he noticed her focus wasn’t on him. Instead, Cardan noted the way her eyes stared sharply at the other man.
“What seems to be the problem?” Y/n questioned formally, showing walking closer to the men. She didn’t let her eyes deviate from their intense glare at the man who had been upsetting the person she loved. “Your King has advised you on how to behave, and yet you remain here. Arguing?” Y/n questioned with pretend intrigue.
Cardan felt his cheeks flush as his lips formed a bashful grin upon hearing y/n’s words. He wasn’t sure what the final straw was, but he could tell his girl was now pissed as well. Cardan couldn’t help the smirk that took over his grin as the man slightly trembled as y/n towered over him from their raised dais.
“Don’t” y/n ordered, cutting off the man’s stuttering. She tilted her head as her left eyebrow rose. Y/n spun to face Cardan and raised her other eyebrow, “you didn’t make him kneel?” Her voice was quiet enough that only Cardan could hear her.
Cardan shook his head. “I swore to you I’d keep it professional” he reminded her, his voice matching hers. Cardan instinctively grinned back as y/n shot him a loving smile.
As y/n turned back to the man standing in front of their dais, she sighed loudly and t’sked. “This is how you greet your King?” Y/n asked, waving her hand at the man’s stance. She smirked as the arrogant man glanced over at Cardan before kneeling. “That’s better, don’t you think?” Y/n hummed, looking over at Cardan.
Cardan nodded in agreement. He gave y/n a loving gaze before his eyes turned cold as he looked back at the man. “I will not issue another warning, you are to make no further advances towards y/f/n y/l/n, is that understood?” Cardan commanded.
The man glanced between Cardan and y/n. When he saw both of their gazes were serious and furious, he nodded silently. He watched with newfound fear as Cardan looked him over and smirked.
“One last matter before Roach removes you from this conference hall” y/n amended, stepping back. She walked over to Cardan, making show of her taking ahold of his hand. “If you are to ever disrespect your King, you will be rewarded with a private conference to address such matters” y/n warned, shaking her head stiffly. When she felt Cardan’s hand stiffen at the idea of her alone with the man, she decided to continue her explanation. “And while that seems to be what you’ve been after, I assure you, you’re wrong. The only way you and I will speak again is if you injudiciously try to disrespect your King. And heed this, that is not a context in which you’d like to meet with me” y/n cautioned, waving for Roach to remove the man.
Tumblr media
“You're honestly really freaking cute when you're jealous” y/n smirked as she removed her earrings. She then moved her hair to the side in order to unclasp her necklace. Y/n suddenly felt Cardan’s breath hit her exposed neck as he moved behind her and sighed loudly.
“I'm not jealous! At all! He just gives you that.. weird, flirty look, and I don't like it!" Cardan grumbled, helping y/n unhook her necklace. He reached around her and set it on her dresser before spinning her around.
“That’s practically the definition of jealous,” y/n teased, tapping his nose with her pointer finger. “Truly though, Cardan, you haven’t anything to be jealous of.” She promised, moving her finger from his nose over to his cheekbone. Y/n smiled at him as she rubbed his sharp cheekbone silently.
“The Ghost said he only has one full bookshelf anyways” Cardan mumbled, trying to point out any ways in which he could best the man.
Y/n rolled her eyes but couldn’t help but be surprised that Cardan went as far as to ask The Ghost to look into the man. “Cardan,” she shook her head softly, “I do love books. But even if he had more, it wouldn’t matter. I love you”.
“He also-“ Cardan began, recalling another detail The Ghost had informed him of. He remembered muttering “pft, that’s it?” to The Ghost countless times earlier today during their conversation on the matter. Surely Cardan could recall those details so he could point out many ways in which he was better than the man.
However, y/n quickly caught on to Cardan’s attempts and shut him down. “Cardan, stop” she stated firmly, reaching her other hand up to cup his face. “I don’t care about him. At all. He could have every woman in Elfhame falling for him, and it wouldn’t matter. I’m yours, and you’re mine” y/n reminded him, squeezing his cheeks.
Cardan’s cheeks flushed as he smiled. His feet shuffled nervously as he pulled y/n to him, his arms tightly wrapped around her. ”You love me and only me, right?" He confirmed.
”Only you Cardan,” y/n promised, pressing a long kiss to his delicate lips. “In fact, I was thinking it might help if I prove it to you” she smirked as she leaned back to catch her breath.
Cardan’s eyes widened briefly before they darkened and he nodded rapidly, all his earlier concerns and doubts erased. He hungrily tugged her hand as he quickly made his way over to their extravagantly decorated bedroom. Cardan spun around and smirked softly back at y/n, “I’m territorial, not jealous. I shall show you the difference”.

HOW DO THEY REACT TO THEIR S/O SMILING GENUINELY FOR THE FIRST TIME?
(GN!Reader)
(Izek, Cardan Greenbriar, Apollo, Edgar Allan Poe)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
IZEK (How to get my Husband on My Side):
You were known as one of the coldest people in the Empire. It was ironic since your husband Izek was also known for being unkind and unfeeling. Yet both of you sparked an odd romance. As soon as Izek gave his first smile after you had done something caring for him, your heart thumped.
Though no expression was seen on your face since you were just like that since childhood.
Izek had given the idea of a date in the street's night market to have some genuine bonding time since he was always so busy as the heir to the Omerta.
“Are you enjoying the bread?” He murmured out smiling down at you as you stuffed your face in the bread, the flavours exploding in your mouth.
“Mmmhmm..” Your voice was muffled as you replied, making Izek flush and chuckle ruffling your hair with clear affection in his gaze.
“It's endearing how you get so happy over the smallest of things. Even if I can’t see it on your face-” He got cut off and hitched as he saw you smile down at the food. Izeks felt his heart race a million times per second. You were beautiful. Like a flower commencing its bloom for its first time.
You tilt your head as you see Izeks dazed expression and tilted your head confused.
“Something happen?”
Izek stared and kissed your forehead with a heavy blush on his face.
“You happened.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
CARDAN GREENBRIAR (The Cruel Prince):
Let's just say..you and Cardan meeting for the first time was NOT ideal. Considering you were mortal and he was Fae. Anything but lovely. And you had vowed to despise that man for as long as you lived. But that all changed as you two exchanged a kiss after you literally kidnapped him. And then they said love is dead.
Cardan was still that sassy and snarky boy you first met. Just softer and spoke his mind more often. It was nice.
You even got him to smile before yourself which was funny since he was known as being the Cruel Prince.
A quiet night where you sat in Cardans bed noticing him laid down, his tail swaying and his long fingernails tracing your round ears with clear love but heavy sass as he tilted your head up with a sly smile.
“You keep staring. Am I that breathtaking?” He whispers out holding your chin tighter, the nail digging into your skin. Not enough to hurt but to make you feel the pressure.
“Yes.” You say truthfully staring at him with an unbreaking gaze making him let go of your chin clearly not expecting such a blunt reply. His Fae ears go a tint of red earning a small genuine smile to appear on your lips proud of yourself for making the rude prince fluster.
His whole body stilled as he saw your expression. He stared and stared and you had to give a reply from how intense he was looking at you.
“Is there something on my face? Or am I merely that breathtaking?” You muttered out using his own words against him making a small scowl appear on his lips though it softened eventually.
“There is something on your face.” He went from tracing your ears to your now lifted lips.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
APOLLO (Record of Ragnarok):
Weirdly enough you and the narcissistic being Apollo became a couple! It was shocking when you accepted just expecting him to cheat right away but he remained..loyal? Everyday as soon as you’d wake up you would be bombarded with gifts, flowers, jewelry, all kinds of things any person would desire from a partner of theirs.
You just didn’t expect him to be the one doing such things.
You two were polar opposites. You were stoic and expressionless while Apollo brought in the dramatics. It was like a comedy show when you two had a conversation.
Currently you two were in Apollo very many hot springs casually bathing and you pinched Apollo everytime he tried to nuzzle into you in the water.
“Seriously..why not cuddle with a lavish man like me?” He crossed his arms sulking.
You sigh at his behaviour but before you can say more Apollo splashed the water right in your face expecting you to get angry so he could get his revenge. Though all that came out of you was heavy laughter and a smile.
At this point Apollo just froze calculating what he just saw.
His fingertips trembled and as you stopped laughing you gave a confused look to his quietness.
“Somet-” Apollo crashed his lips right onto yours. Your voice muffles and you flush gasping for breath after the kiss and glare at the man in front of you.
“What was that for..” You narrow your gaze trying to get your heartrate to a normal pace after that whole thing.
“Can’t I kiss my dear spouse?”
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
EDGAR ALLAN POE (Bungo Stray Dogs):
Being quiet and stoic and your beloved being an absolute fluster machine was oddly a contrast that went well. After Poe spilled his feelings outside in a garden you had accepted making the already red man redder.
Poe was an intelligent man at that and you always loved listening to his stories despite your face not showing much. Your actions showed plenty.
Currently Poe was vigorously writing on paper his Raccoon Karl sitting on his shoulder. You went behind him hugging him making the man flinch and soon redden as he realized it was you.
“O-oh darling it's just you..” He whispered out soon smiling as he felt you cling heavier and rubbed your head gently.
“You better not be overworking again.” You say leaning and picking up his hair to see his eyes.
“This novel is near due! I have to finish it by tonight!” Poe said his foot on the table with extra dramatic effects as he clenched his fist and continued writing.
“How about paying attention to me?” You drawled out, making him freeze.
You chuckle at his reaction earning a small smile to grace your lips.
If it was even possible Poe went into tomato mode staring at you hard as he saw your unexpected smile happen. His heart was screaming inside.
You notice his bashful face and pinch his cheek.
“You got even redder.”  You said in a hushed whisper used to him going a blushing mess over anything but this time it seemed just more.
“It's because of that smile.”

THE CRUEL PRINCE - LANDO NORRIS
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
PAIRING: lando norris x girlfriend!reader
GENRE: fluff
WORD COUNT: 419
WARNINGS: THE CRUEL PRINCE SPOILERS, the folk of the air canon violence kinda??, lando is jealous about cardan
Tumblr media
“What are you reading?” Lando asked as he entered the living room after he ended the stream.
“The Cruel Prince” she answered, not even looking at her boyfriend.
“That book from Tiktok? Didn't you buy it like yesterday?” he asked, seeing as his girlfriend had already read the ⅔ of the book.
“Well, I did,” she said and looked at him. “It’s really gripping,” she added. “I haven't read so many pages since, I don't know, I was reading The Chronicles of Narnia” she announced with a smile on her face.
She was happy because reading was giving her a kick again. She wasn't reading for a long time until now, because she was working and traveling with Lando and she was still in blind spot with Frank Herbert's “Dune” and she didn't want to read to be honest.
“Well, then what is it about? Who is the cruel prince?” he asked, sitting next to her.
“I don't really know,” she answered. “There are three brothers and each of them is a prince and each is cruel” she said, but judging from Lando's face, she knew that answer didn't satisfy him. “So there is a prince called Cardan and people from Tiktok think that he is that cruel prince,” she said.
“Why?” the guy asked curiously.
“Well, um, he popped Jude, the main character, and her sister into the river and they almost drowned” she chuckled a little.
“He did WHAT?” Lando was truly worried about what his girlfriend was reading.
“Oh, and he has a tail,” she added with pink cheeks.
“Don't even tell me you like him” she only covered her face with a book and he knew.
“You know I like Timothée and people are fancasting him as Cardan and you know, Lan” she said and bookmarked the page and closed the book. “My heart belongs to you and only you” she announced and kissed his cheek.
“And that main character?” he asked about the plot again.
“She's a human, has a twin sister and when they were seven their step dad killed their parents and kidnapped them to the magic world. Oh, and she hates Cardan and he hates her” she chuckled at his face after she stopped talking about Jude.
“You really need to stop reading this,” Lando sighed and hugged her.
“You know, Cardan’s style in clothing is extravagant so if you…” she started but he cut her off by kissing her.
“Remind me on Halloween” he said only and kissed her again.

Bad Idea Right
Y/N had wanted to be a knight her whole life but when she joins the Court of Shadows with her friend Jude some things happen between her friends and Prince Cardan.
Also she is a mortal.
———————————————————————
After training at the Court of Shadows, sparring with Jude and the Ghost I was so tired. I had to hide the bruises to not show anyone where I was last night.
By the time I arrive at my dwelling it is almost sunrise. I must get ready for school and deal with Cardan. I would show off my skills at him to scare him off but I can’t.
I arrive a Madoc’s Estate so Jude and Taryn can walk with me to school. “Waiting on someone” a voice calls out. It’s Cardan, of course it is. “And what are you doing here” I say.
“Oh nothing just walking around before heading to school and bullying you”. I roll my eyes. Jude and Taryn walk out and see Cardan and ignore the fact that he’s there and they walk to school unbothered.
Y/N sits next to Jude, Taryn, and the Ghost during Professor Kanes lecture about astronomy. Y/N was tired after last night and yawned. After she yawned she can tell someone was staring at her. She looked around and saw Cardan glaring at her and had yawned.
Had he been watching her this whole time, Y/N had thought.
Y/N didn’t give it much thought right after and looked forward.
After school Cardan and his friend group walked up to Y/N and their friends. “Leave us alone Valerian”, Y/N said. “Come on Y/N, your no fun” he said. Valerian and Nicasia hold down your friends down. “Hold on Y/N you have something on your face let me fix that” Locke said. Locke grips your throat and presses you against a tree.
You try to break free from him but there’s no budge. “Leave her I quite like the way her face is”. He releases her and Nicasia and Valerian released her friends.
We leave and when we are far from them the ghost ask if Y/N is okay. “Yes I am, I just hate it that he always does this to us”. “I don’t know Y/N I think he only has it out on you” Jude says.
Y/N and the Ghost have been dating a while. The Ghost cups your cheek and hugs you. “Don’t worry I promise you they won’t hurt you”.
“I love you” he says. “As do I” I say in return.

Weeping Heart (Part 4)
Part 1 Part 2 Part 3
Summary: a late night walk in the woods, bandages ripped off old wounds.
•○●⛦●○•
Word Count: 1477
A/n: AHHAHAAHHA I LOVE THISS like it feels so good to be writing 🥹
we getting our hearts broken folks, less goo 🥳
anyways, enjoy!
°•°•°•○🌑○•°•°•°
There wasn’t a knife at her neck.
That was the first concern Y/n cleared from her mind, her heart rate slowing in comfort before speeding up again.
Who the fuck-
"Y/n, my friend." Slurred a clearly drunk Cardan.
Thank god it’s this fool.
She knew it was mean to think of him this way, but Cardan had never been much of a warrior.
He was a poet.
Made to be a lover, born to be soft hearted, forced to rule.
"Cardan." She gently grabbed his arm, trying to push him off as she breathed deep, her racing heart slowing. "What are you doing here-"
"How are you!" She blinked as he stepped back, spreading his arms as if asking for a hug.
"I’m good, Cardan. How… how are you?" She mumbled, dreading the answer already.
She did not want to know how he was, because if he was not good- which she somehow knew he wasn’t- she would want to return, heartbreak be damned.
And that would end up with her not being good.
"I’m so glad you asked!" He cackled, swaying on his feet before Y/n wrapped her hand around his bicep and forced him to sit. "I am so sad, Y/n. You know why?"
Her breath caught in her throat, and she stared at where she could make out the outline of his eyes. "Why?"
She began moving again as he started listing off all the reasons everyone at court bothered him, the way this courtier wasn’t entertaining enough, the way that messenger was too stoic and would never laugh at Cardan’s jokes, the way Jude forced him to sit in the great hall and and just watch, prohibiting him from revelling like he had used to before he was crowned.
It made Y/n smile.
Everything had changed in the past year, with his family being killed, him becoming a king, his sudden marriage, but if there was something that hadn’t changed, it was him.
He kept whining as she arranged her pillows around him, and as he leaned back, she nodded along, just like before.
But then his voice lowered, and she had to strain her ears to hear, even with her advanced fae hearing.
"You left too."
She froze. "I know."
"I don’t have anyone to talk to now Y/n." It was dark, but not enough that she couldn’t make out the small pout on his lips.
"I’m sorry, but it was the queen’s orders-"
"Fuck the orders, Y/n. Come back. I am so lonely without you."
She pulled back from him, blinking away the sudden stinging that started in her eyes, but he was quick, his hand grabbing hers in a vice like grip.
Cardan really was lonely, because he was not one to curse so freely, and if he of all people was cursing…
I’m fucked.
"I was so excited to meet you again, but you haven’t talked to me at all since I arrived. And then I thought you would appreciate your soldiers being distracted so we could talk, but then you got mad and left me alone."
His voice kept getting smaller and smaller, like a child on the verge of crying.
It broke Y/n from the inside.
"Cardan-"
"Please Y/n, I want to talk. Just like we used to." He mumbled, and Y/n watched as his eyelids drooped over his glassy eyes, as if he was on the verge of crying but too tired and drunk to. "Please, don’t ignore me. I’m sorry if I hurt you but-"
She swallowed.
"I- Cardan? You want to talk right?"
He hummed softly, his eyes struggling to stay open as he turned on his side.
"Sleep, my love. We’ll talk tomorrow, yeah?"
He turned his head to her again. "You promise?"
She offered him a weak smile, knowing he probably could not see.
"Yes, sweetheart. Rest now."
He passed out before she even finished pulling the duvet over him, and she stared at him for a moment. It was a split second decision, but she hesitantly dipped down, pressing her lips to his temple.
Sighing, she stretched to try and get rid of the sudden pain in her lower back.
She looked around, wondering if she should go back to sleep.
She didn’t, instead stepping out into the crisp night air, her eyes drawing to the softly glowing embers in the middle of the camp, fighting to stay alive long after the fire had died down.
Quietly, she settled down on one of the logs closest to it, lost in her own thoughts.
It wasn’t long before someone interrupted her, though.
"Couldn’t sleep?"
She blinked, then turned to look at the newcomer. "I should be asking you that."
Herb shrugged, plopping down beside her. "I asked first."
Y/n sighed. "You could say that."
He was silent, then- "Why?"
Frustrated, Y/n tilted her head back, eyes fixed on the stars twinkling against the dark sky. "Because my bed is occupied."
He nodded, like he knew exactly what she was talking about.
"Why are you here?"
"Couldn’t stop thinking about all the things. Too much on my mind to shut off."
Y/n hummed.
Neither of them spoke after that. Surrounded by silence and his quiet company, Y/n felt oddly at peace.
In the distance, Y/n thought she heard an owl hoot, the quiet rustling of leaves, the crunch of snow. It calmed her.
Herb stood then, cracking his back.
"Come."
She blinked. "What?"
"I’m going to take a walk in the forest. Come with me."
She thought about it for a moment, then stood. "Not too deep, Herb."
He grinned his signature goofy smile, his canines glinting under the light of the full moon.
"Do you realise what you just said? I can make so many jokes with that."
Y/n shook her head, exasperated, shoving his shoulder as she began walking off towards the dense cover of trees. He continued cackling like a madman, his steps near silent as he fell in step beside her.
Unconsciously, the corner of her lips ticked up.
"So. His highness?"
Just like that, her smile vanished. "What about him?"
Herb was quiet, but she knew he was observing her. "You love him."
It was not a question. It was a statement, his surprise evident in his voice.
Y/n turned her head away.
But she didn’t deny it.
"And he’s married."
"I know." She snapped, making him raise his hands in surrender.
"Calm down, I’m not trying to offend you-" A look from her, and he stopped.
Moments passed, tense, filled with harsh truths swirling between them.
"Why… Why did you not tell him? From what I know, you used to be very close."
"I don’t see how it concerns you." Y/n closed her eyes, chest constricting. She exhaled heavily. "I… he would have never loved me back."
A beat passed, then- "How do you know that?"
"Don’t you know? He was a rake. Had everyone begging for a chance to spend a night with him. He wasn’t the type to settle down, at least not so early."
"But he did."
He did. And it wasn’t with Y/n.
"He would tell me everything back then, and maybe if I hadn’t left… he probably would still have told me everything. A few days before his coronation, he told me he liked Jude. I knew then that I never did stand a chance."
"I… I’m sorry-"
"Don’t be. It isn’t your fault that the heart loves."
He was quiet after that, contemplating. This Herb as new to her. This was not the Herb who was always goofing around, pulling pranks on people in the middle of important missions.
It made her concerned, to say the least.
"Are you sure he doesn’t like you back-"
"Herb. Please."
He nodded reluctantly as the camp came into view again, guilt and sadness mixing with something Y/n did not want to recognise in his eyes.
He came to a stop in front of his tent, glancing at her and opening the flap, his eyes unmoving.
"Get in, Y/n."
She blinked at the seriousness in his tone, the way he refused to break eye contact. "I- you want me to sleep in your tent?"
He rolled his eyes, letting the flap fall. "Unless you are planning on kicking his highness out of yours, where are you going to sleep?"
"Where will you sleep?"
He shook his head. "I’m not tired. I was thinking of staying up and keeping watch for some time."
Y/n nodded, searching his eyes.
She stepped forward, and so did Herb, his back to her.
Y/n hesitated for a moment. "Herb?"
He paused, half turning to her.
"Thank you-"
"Don’t." He offered her a small smile, then walked away.

PART ONE | PART THREE
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The local children were convinced you were a witch. Part of you wanted to tell them that you were worse than a witch—that you could turn them into animal of your choosing, that you could make them do things and think they liked it, that you could ruin their lives by virtue of existing. Perhaps that was the heartache talking, so you instead shouted “boo!” when you caught them staring for too long. You supposed, though, you fed into the rumors of your being a witch. You came into this town out of nowhere, lived far away from the rest of its people, and only interacted with them when you went into town for food or a new library book. No one knew who you were or where you came from. At first, you reveled in the solace.
Now, you were only painfully are of how lonely you were.
When you left Faerie, you went as far as you could from your former home. Traveled up to the mountains, found an abandoned cabin you could hole up in. There were few faeries in this area, mostly solitary fae that you would encounter while on walks in the woods, which had been the draw. Months later, you found yourself wishing you had set yourself up in one of the communities of fae who lived in the mortal lands. Would you be admitting defeat to leave the cabin now and join them?
It wasn’t all horrible in your little cabin. Being away from court and all of its expectations was nice. You didn’t have to worry about carefully mincing your words so as not to offend anyone. You weren’t dragged into dances you would rather avoid. And you certainly did have to let your heart break over and over again as Jude at Cardan’s side. No, instead, you could read and write poetry and tend to the little garden you had started. You could find your happiness, even if it was without the one person you truly wanted by your side.
You wondered how Cardan was doing. Had he even noticed you were gone? Did he care? He had seemed to miss seeing you when you danced with him on your last night in Faerie. But he had also not made any prior efforts to seek you out. Fae couldn’t lie, but they could manipulate. They could twist the truth to serve their interests. Few were better at doing so than Cardan.
“When I learned you left Faerie, this was not the sort of place I expected you to be.”
You stiffened as you rounded the corner. The basket you’d been using to carry the herbs you foraged nearly fell from your grip. You squared your shoulders, looked down your nose at the woman seated at your dining room table. “I did not come here under the expectation to be found.”
Jude considered the room. The dirty dishes in the sink, the wilted flowers in the center of the table, the open storybook at the chair askew in front of her. “So it seems. It was not easy to find you.”
“You should have taken that as a sign to leave me be,” you said. You crossed the dining room and went into the kitchen. Jude’s chair scratched against the floor as she followed you. You ignored her as you began to unload the herbs from your basket. “I left Faerie for a reason.”
Though you were avoiding looking at her, you knew Jude’s eyes did not leave you. If you didn’t know better, you might have thought Jude was fae herself. The predatory glint in her eyes, the way her fingers itched to grab at her sword. She was not still like fae, nor was she unnaturally beautiful like fae, but she carried herself in such a way that you could be convinced otherwise. By human standards, she would have been the most beautiful of all. It was easy to understand why Cardan would choose her. Gorgeous but lethal—the exact sort of woman he would pursue. First Nicasia, now Jude. It was just as easy to see that you did not fit into the picture.
“You ran in the middle of the night,” Jude said. You looked over your shoulder. Her brows were pinched together as she scrutinized you.
“Have you come here to chastise me for leaving without a goodbye?”
She shook her head. “I have come because you were invited to breakfast.”
It was hard not to laugh. Was that why she came all the way to mountains to find you? Because you didn’t come to breakfast? It was so ridiculous. Of all the reasons to seek you out, it was the silliest of them all. Your heart ached all the same, though. No one came because you were a friend. No one came because you were missed. Would Cardan have even known you were gone if he hadn’t extended the invitation the very evening you fled?
“If I have offended the King, then I extend my apologies.”
Jude lifted her chin. “Tell him yourself.”
Your jaw clenched and unclenched. No. You would not go to him. You would not drag yourself back to that palace and let yourself be reminded why you had to go. You refused to break your heart all over again. “I have no desire to return to Faerie.”
“You don’t have to.”
Tumblr media
Cardan stood in your bedroom. It was different than your one in Faerie. The one there had been full of extravagant things—the finest things he could gift you. It was full of gold and pearl and opal, glittering as if it all needed to be housed in a vault. But this bedroom, it had been stitched together out of nothing. Threadbare blankets, smooshed pillows, books that looked like they would fall apart with one wrong look. Cardan listened to your conversation as your voice floated down the hall. Would you really choose all of this over being with him? Was he truly so terrible?
The floor creaked under his feet as he stepped out and walked down the hall. Cardan could only see the back of your head, but you still looked just as beautiful as he remembered. His fingers twitched at his side as he fought the urge to run up behind you, take you in his arms, and whisk you away to Faerie. When had you taken so much control over him? When had he given it to you so willingly? When had you decided you didn’t want it anymore?
“I believe I am owed an apology?”
You turned slowly on your heel. Your eyes narrowed, but Cardan did not miss the flash of surprise. Your tongue swiped over your teeth. Would it be wrong to take that tongue in his mouth? Did it matter if it was? “I apologize.”
“My, that was heartfelt.”
Your eyes fell to the tail that swished around Cardan’s legs. It was still unfamiliar for him to have it out, still hard to control it from revealing his base emotions. He tried to will it to stop, but it continued to wave around as his excitement of seeing you bubbled in his chest. “Would you prefer I fall to my knees and weep for your forgiveness? Kiss your feet until you are pleased?”
“Oh, there are few things that would please me more than you on your knees for me, but I would prefer to not have an audience for that.”
Your gaze flitted from Cardan to Jude, who was inspecting your collection of kitchen knives. Were you debating sending her away? He would enjoy that. He would like to get on his own knees and remind you why he cared for you so. He misliked the distance you were putting between him. Maybe if he begged prettily enough, you would forgive him for whatever cruel thing he did that sent you running.
“What are you doing here?”
“I don’t appreciate learning that you fled in the middle of the night after inviting you to breakfast. Is my company so awful that you would rather leave your home than spend a moment with me?”
A scoff escaped your lips. “I didn’t expect you to care.”
Cardan stared. Didn’t care…? He was so sure he had been clear with his intentions. He sent you gifts—he sent you a ring! The ring…Cardan reached over to his littlest finger and slipped it off. Ignoring your noise of protest, he closed the distance, grabbed your hand, and slipped the ring back on the finger it belonged. His heart slowed to a normal beat.
“Why would I give you this ring if I didn’t care?”
You stared at the ring. “You have gifted me many things.”
Jude stepped toward you. Your head snapped over to look at her, as if you had forgotten she was there. She tapped on the glittering gem on the ring’s center. “Allow me—Cardan is not good at professions of love, it seems. I told him of how humans would gift a ring as a promise of love. He wished to do that for you. Usually, there are confessions of how one wants to stay with their partner for all of their lives, but it seems he forgot that part.”
Cardan’s face burned as you looked back to him. “Is that true?” you asked.
“Do I need to get on my knees for you to believe it?” He ignored Jude’s remark that that, too, was part of the human tradition.
You straightened your spine. “I will not be a lover to the king.”
Of course you wouldn’t be. You deserved more than that. Cardan was willing to offer you more than that. All you had to do was give him the word. Without a thought, Cardan sank to his knees, captured your hands in his. “Then be my Queen.”
Your breath hitched.
“Come back to Faerie and rule by my side. Allow me to love you as I have tried for all these years. I missed you.” He lifted one of your hands to lips, then the other. “I begged Jude to help me find you and bring you home. I begged her to help me come here. Please, don’t let it all be for not.”
All you could manage was a single nod, and that was enough.

j j j j j !!!! cardan reacting to y/n wiping his kisses away as a joke hehe
Drama King : Cardan Greenbriar x Reader
Description: 2.8k wc, Cardan is a simp for his wife/reader and becomes very dramatic about her wiping away his kiss. Fluff
Warnings: simp behavior lol, Cardan drinking, minor angst if you squint
Tumblr media
“Darling, have you seen my notepad?” Cardan asked, entering their library.
Y/n placed her palm against the page she was on in her book as she looked around her desk.
“The one from this morning?” She wondered.
She recalled Cardan utilizing his forest green gold-bound and embellished notebook during their brief weekly meeting with some of the folk of Elfhame.
Cardan hummed and walked to her, resting his hands on her shoulders as he began massaging them through the material of her gown.
Y/n shook her head before she tilted it back to look up at him, “No, I’m sorry”.
He sighed but nodded, perching himself on the desk next to her, “what are you reading, my dear?”
Y/n silently lifted the book up from the desk.
Her hand now pinched between the pages to keep her place as she showed him the cover.
Cardan squinted his eyes and formed an exaggeratedly disgusted look as he was the title: The Archives of Elfhame, Volume III.
As she lowered the book back to the desk, Cardan scoffed.
“We have far better tales than that rubbish,” He reminded her, waving his hand towards their massive collection of bookshelves.
Y/n chuckled, “I agree, but as Queen of Elfhame, I should really know this information”.
Cardan gave her a smug smirk as he whispered, “I have a better way to teach you”.
“Hmm and that is?” She questioned, raising an eyebrow at him.
“You'll just have to trust me” Cardan winked.
Y/n bit her lip, and shook her head to clear the unfairly attractive sight before her.
“Me, trust you?” Y/n pondered teasingly, “mmmm…yeah, sure”
Cardan crossed his arms over his chest and let out a loud puff of air, “I'm very trustworthy...”
Y/n raised an eyebrow at him, because while Cardan -like most of Elfhame- cannot lie, she knew her husband.
He was more than capable of twisting his words so they were vague enough or otherwise easily misinterpreted.
He chuckled softly, “well, when it comes to you”.
Y/n smiled and nodded.
It was true, y/n could always see through his lexicon manipulations.
She smirked and pretended to think about his offer.
Leaning back into her seat, she sighed, “perhaps when I begin to learn about trickery or the royal lineage, you can teach me, but for now I've got to learn this quick if I want to not make a fool of myself”.
“You couldn’t do that, you’re far too intelligent for that my darling” Cardan tsk’d.
Y/n chewed on her bottom lip as her eyes fluttered bashfully, “mm, I appreciate that gorgeous”.
Cardan blushed and stroked her check delicately, grinning at her.
Y/n hummed softly, leaning into his touch briefly.
She sighed as she pulled back, re-opening her book, “I really do need to focus though”.
Cardan pouted, swinging his legs against the edge of the desk; visually bored.
“Why don't you see if Roach or Ghost have seen your notebook?” Y/n suggested, giving him a small smile.
He seemed pleased at the idea, jumping up and giving her a soft kiss on the cheek before running off.
——
Y/n had finally started to get into a good pace, actually retaining some of the information when she heard her husband enter the library again.
She tried to ignore him, her eyes boring down at the detailed history on the page before her.
Cardan smirked to himself, silently approaching his wife and leaning his head down onto her shoulder.
Y/n suppressed a smile as he placed a kiss to her collarbone and left his lips there for a moment.
She took a deep breath to clear her head and then turned towards him.
“Cardan,” she sighed, “I need to focus”.
He groaned and frowned against her skin, “you can take a break”
“You know I can’t do that. I need to learn this before Friday” y/n argued.
His eyes skimmed the material and he whined, “but it’s boring”.
Y/n nodded, “I know, but still”.
He pouted but gave her a quick kiss on the cheek before leaving to find a way to kill time.
——
A few hours had passed when y/n heard him enter again.
She rubbed her eyes, feeling them becoming exhausted from the constant strain.
Y/n waited quietly for Cardan to announce himself as she stretched her limbs.
But he didn’t say anything, just came up and wrapped his arms around her, over her chest.
She let herself sit like that for a few moments before the text on the page caught her attention.
As she tried to lean forward to resume her reading, her husband softly held her in place.
He smirked and placed a sloppy kiss on her cheek.
“Cardan” she whined playfully as she lifted her hand to wipe the slobber off her cheek.
He whimpered faintly, removing his hands from around her and stepping back.
“I really need to focus, no more kisses” she joked, still rubbing at her cheek.
Cardan pouted to himself and left silently, sulking out of the room.
Y/n turned to watch him leave, confused that he wasn’t trying to banter with her.
However, as she watched his overly dramatic exit, she lovingly rolled her eyes and returned to her reading.
——
Y/n slid the book backwards on the desk as she stood up.
Her limbs were strained beyond belief and all she wanted to do now was find her husband and curl up beside him to rest.
She grabbed the book and placed it back on the shelf, dragging her hand down the spine as she hummed.
She was finally done, she’d obtained what she needed from the book.
And now she could spend time with her husband, as he had wanted to earlier.
“Hey, have you seen Cardan?” Y/n asked Roach as she entered his office space.
Roach chuckled loudly, “your husband has been drinking”.
Y/n rolled her eyes, uncertain what was so funny about that, “what’s new?”
“Fair enough your highness,” Roach replied, chuckling when y/n groaned at her friend referring to her by her title.
“He’s been mopey and pouting whilst drinking” he added, a humorous glow in his eyes.
Y/n frowned slightly, knowing Cardan had been bored.
She knew it wasn’t her responsibility to cure his boredom.
Yet, she wished he’d have found something other than just pouting and drinking to keep him busy until she’d finished.
Nonetheless, y/n gave Roach a knowing look as this still wasn’t unusual behavior for Cardan.
Roach laughed and shook his head, “y/n, he doesn't really do that unless you're out of town”.
Y/n giggled softly as she recalled the times her husband would become exceptionally clingy when she’d return from a trip away.
“I’ll find him and see what's up, thanks” y/n responded on her way to check the dining hall.
——
Y/n suppressed a giggle as she entered the parlor and found the state her husband was in.
Cardan had his favorite gold-leafed wine glass in his shaky hands, the deep maroon liquid sloshing out from the rim.
She stood in the doorway, watching him curiously.
He seemed to be writing -or attempting to write that is- something important; his focus clearly displayed on his face.
She smiled, he evidently found his stationary at some point today.
“Honey?” Y/n called out softly, leaning against the frame of the door.
Cardan didn’t answer, just kept writing and accidentally dripping wine onto the table and papers as he did.
Y/n pursed her lips and made her way to him, bending down to see the notes in the candle lit room.
Much to her surprise, y/n found her name written at the top of each letter.
There were countless handwritten letters, and they were all addressed to her.
“Car, what’s going on?” She asked softly, placing her hand over his as he lifted the tip of his writing device from the paper briefly.
“You’re mad” he mumbled, setting his glass down before using that hand to softly move y/N’s off his other one.
“No, I’m not” she argued, pulling out the chair beside him.
Cardan didn’t answer, he just kept writing.
Y/n sighed softly, “Cardan, love, why do you think I’m mad?”
This time he finally looked up at her, his eyes glassy but it was hard to tell if it was from the copious amount of alcohol he’d consumed or his emotions.
Nonetheless, y/n hated seeing him like that.
Especially if it was because she’d done something to make him think she was mad.
She frowned deeply, reaching over and pushing the wine glass further away from them before taking both of his hands in hers.
“Cardan, talk to me” she requested, staring at him worriedly.
Cardan’s lips turned downward as his eyes flickered from the papers, to y/N’s eyes, to her cheek, then back to the papers.
“You wiped away my kiss” he stated, his voice laced with the tone of various emotions.
Y/n nearly choked on the smoke coming from the single candle on the table before them as her jaw dropped and lips parted.
“OH MY GOSH!” She exclaimed, dropping his hands and shaking her head, “you're so dramatic!”
“I am not” Cardan argued firmly, a weak glare sent her way as he crossed his arms over his chest.
“That's why you've been moping all day?” She clarified, laughing lightly.
She shook her head, “Car, you know when I'm mad, that's not mad”.
Cardan seemed to think over her words, his eyes shifting to the side as he bit his wine-stained bottom lip.
“Okay, I concede” he replied, looking back at his wife, “but, still, it was offensive”.
Her eyebrows raised as she dipped her head slightly, staring into his eyes, “are you serious?”
“Very much so, yes” Cardan affirmed adamantly, his chest puffed slightly.
Y/n rolled her eyes at his dramatics, “Ca-“.
Cardan stood from the table and kept his balance despite his legs being somewhat unsteady.
“I don't think you deserve my love or kisses right now, l'm sad to say” he declared in a rather formal tone.
She sighed, “Cardan,”.
And just like that, his formal behavior and verbiage were gone.
“Nope” he responded, dramatics back as he pointedly held his head high as he left the room.
Y/n massaged her temples with her thumbs before turning her attention to the mess of notes on the table.
“My dearest y/n/n,
I am terribly sorry for having annoyed you. Forgive me?
- Cardan G. 🖤 ”
“My Queen,
I know you need to learn of Elfhame’s history, but I need to give you kisses. Can’t we compromise?
- Your King”
“Y/n y/m/n y/l/n Greenbriar,
Okkkay so first, I loooove calling you that anyways, you cannot be mad at me for loving you. That is not fair. It’s also not fair to read all day and not be with me. I propose we find a way to make it fair
-Cardan Greenbriar, your husband”
“My dear radiant warrior,
I confess I don’t comprehend why you chose the book over me. I am far more interesting than it is. Am I not? I’m offended you don’t seem to think so.
Sulkingly,
-Yours”
“Y/n, miraculous love,
I forgot what I was going to write. Give me some time.
Oh, right. I’m disgusted that you dared wipe away my love. You could have yelled at me for bothering you. That I could handle.
I think.
But to throw away my kiss, that crosses a line. A line in my heart. And my heart. Oh you get the point.
I expect a formal apology to remedy this.
Expectantly Waiting,
-C.G. Your annoying husband”
“Oh Cardan” y/n sighed, giggling warmly at the letters that she would pin on their wall once the wine stains dried.
She rose from her seat, pushing it in quietly before doing the same with the one he’d occupied moments before.
Y/n blew out the candle, gathered the used and unused stationary, and drank the remainder of his glass of wine.
On her way to find him, she disposed of the unused stationary by placing it on his desk along with the now unlit candle.
She then set his sweet drunkenly written letters on the glass table in their bedroom to air dry.
One of their staff was passing by and kindly offered to take Cardan’s glass off her hands.
So now all that was left to do was to find her moping husband and try to console him; as dramatic as he was behaving or not.
She found him sprawled out on the lounge chair at the end of the hall.
“Cardan,” she whispered softly, “it was a joke”.
“My love is not a joke” he huffed, sitting up as his eyes landed on her.
Y/n sighed as she sat beside him.
Rubbing her thumb over his chiseled cheekbone, she clarified, “I never said it was Cardan. Me wiping away your kiss was the joke”.
He let his eyes wander hers for a moment before scoffing loudly, “it is disrespectful to your King, you know, to do that”
Y/n raised her eyebrow at him tauntingly, “and just how many girls are you going around kissing now your Highness?”
Cardan’s eyes widened as he shook his head vehemently, “I haven’t. None other then my heavenly wife”.
Y/n smiled widely as she felt her face warm, “that's much more like it”.
Cardan sat up straighter, grabbing her hand and playing with her wedding ring, “are you done pushing my love away?”.
She rolled her eyes but nodded, “yes, precious boy”.
Cardan’s cheeks flashed red as he grinned wickedly, “then let's go, my dear!”
Y/n felt him tug her hand as he stood up and began to stumble towards the front door.
“Where?” She giggled, following closely to keep him from falling over, “you’re half drunk!”
“Half sober you mean” he corrected with a smirk.
Y/n hummed moving to slide her arm around his torso to stabilize him more, “and where am I following your half sober bum to?”
“You'll see” he responded simply, a shimmer dancing in eyes.
——
After following him for a few minutes, y/n saw a picnic had been set up beside her favorite pond.
“Cardan?” She asked, tears forming in the corners of her eyes.
“Yes darling?” Cardan questioned, tenderly removing her hand from his toro so he could guide her to the blanket that was resting on the viridescent grass.
She looked around, her eyes taking note of all the little details he attended to, “what is all of this for sweetheart?”
Cardan sat down on the powder blue blanket, tugging on y/N’s hand to encourage her to do the same.
Her eyes wandered still as she sat before him and smiled.
“I know I was being bothersome earlier, so this is to amend that” he explained, opening the wicker basket beside him.
“Awe” y/n cooed, squeezing his hand as she looked away due to her eyes watering profusely now.
“I set it up before you were so disrespectful of me and my love” he commented, closing the lid to the basket as he pulled out one plate.
“So now I'm banished from it?” She asked, facing him again.
If it weren’t for the joking tone he could hear in her voice, Cardan would’ve -and still nearly did- leap over the gap between them to hold her.
“Of course not” he scoffed teasingly, his fingertips delicately dabbing the corners of her eyes as tears threatened to fall.
He wouldn’t dare joke about it if he thought the tears were anything other than happy ones.
But he knew his wife well enough to tell, and the fact that she was struggling to not smile in order to keep up her pretend offense didn’t hurt either.
“You’ve earned it back, for now” he smirked as he moved his hand and began setting some crackers onto the plate between them.
Y/n gasped dramatically, “oh thank goodness. I’ll do whatever I need to do to stay in your good graces, your highness”.
Cardan rolled his eyes, “and l'm the dramatic one”
“Correct,” she grinned, reaching over and squeezing the pointed tip of his ear before tapping the golden crown resting on his gorgeous curls, “my drama king”.
His jaw dropped and he shook his head but couldn’t suppress his wide smile, “I will take it”.
“Why's that?” Y/n questioned before Cardan slipped a cracker with a slice of cheese on it into her mouth.
“I am choosing to focus on only the being yours part” he admitted smugly, taking a bite of his own cheese and cracker.
Y/n swallowed the remanded of the snack he gave her and bent her back as she leaned forward.
“You're always mine and I have no problem fighting anyone I have to in order to keep it that way” she promised, grinning as his cheeks flushed.
“That won’t be needed my love,” he promised, arching his lower back to match her posture, his lips hovering hers.
“I’m fairly certain everyone knows I'm absolutely besotted by you” Cardan swore before closing the gap between their lips and pulling her closer.

Poison
Azriel x Reader
Tumblr media
Summary: At an event hosted by High Lord Beron, Azriel's closest friend Y/N seems to be incredibly wasted. The only problem? Azriel knows that she doesn't get drunk. Ever.
Warnings: Mentions of alcohol, poison, vomiting, a drunk love confession, a bit of angst but it is all in all quite fluffy
A/N: So this may or may not be inspired by the scene in Wicked King where Cardan gets poisoned... enjoy!! :3
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Y/N is, as always, on high alert as she follows Rhys into the ballroom. Something combined with her dislike for social events and her lack of trust for the High Lord of Autumn meant her eyes and ears were everywhere, keeping constant watch over everything. Azriel’s large hand gently splays over her bare back, the rough fingers a gentle reminder that he’s there, and possibly to tell her to stop being so tense. She shoots a glare at her best friend, who responds with a badly-concealed smile.
She’s dressed in black, they all are, as is custom in the Night Court. Her dress is floor length, the black satin offering a nice hold around her figure, the neckline a low plunge, and the slit on her left side allowing her some freedom. The fabric is littered with silver threads and diamonds, meant to represent constellations, and also to match the sparkly heels on her feet. She looks pretty. She feels it.
A servant welcomes them warmly, almost immediately offering the group a drink of champagne, which she takes. Cassian snorts, and teases her for taking the only glass that the poor servant had, but she rolls her eyes and takes a sip.
She rarely drinks. She doesn’t like it. She’s seen enough of the boys’ drunk shenanigans to be put off it for a lifetime. She usually stays sober, if not tipsy, whenever they go to Rita’s, opting for escorting a stumbling Rhys back to Feyre rather than being the one stumbling.
But one drink won’t hurt. Not tonight. Tonight, she’ll need it.
The Inner Circle split up around the room, Azriel hot on Y/N’s trails, scarred fingers just barely tracing her bare shoulders. She sighs, leaning against a wall, him doing the same. “Time check?”
Azriel snorts. “You’re the one with the watch.”
She clicks her tongue, and checks the time, leaning back with a groan. “Two more hours of… this.”
“Always a ray of sunshine.”
“Says the shadowsinger.” she grins. Azriel was the first person she’d met in the Inner Circle, and coincidentally, her closest friend. They’d been attached at the hip the moment she’d introduced herself. They know everything about each other, inside and out.
She’d never admit it, but her heart longed for the Illyrian. He was always so clever, so considerate. And, not to mention, his sharp features and hazel eyes made heat rise in her cheeks; hot, blissful, lovestruck heat.
“I think Cassian wants me for something.” Azriel muses, tipping his chin towards where Cassian was very unsubtly gesturing for him to accompany him. Y/N narrows her eyes at the redhead he’s standing with, and laughs.
“If I didn’t know better, I’d say that were Eris Vanserra. Good luck, Az.”
Azriel groans, playfully tugging her hair as he walks over to his brother.
All alone, now. She drinks her champagne, downing it almost immediately. She liked champagne. It never got you too drunk, never made you too irrational. “Enjoying the festivities, Y/N?” Beron’s voice purrs out from behind her. She forces a smile.
“I’d say yes, but it appears I’ve run out of champagne.” The High Lord cocks a brow at her words, and offers her another glass with a different, more vibrant liquid. “Try this. It’s exclusive to the Autumn Court. I believe you’ll enjoy it, it’s not too strong.”
She eyes the glass, before taking it, taking a sip. It’s a subtle flavour - fruity, slightly bitter. “Thank you, my lord.” His smile doesn’t quite reach his eyes as he walks away.
Cauldron, this drink is good. She drinks every last drop, and places it down on the table next to her, looking for a bottle of the same-
Oh. Oh. This is fun. Fun, fun, fun!
Why isn’t she having fun! Tonight is amazing!
An uncontrollable giggle tears from her throat, the sound throwing her off slightly as wave after wave of lucid dizziness hit her. She laughs, clutching her chest. This is so fun!
Where’s Azriel? Is he having fun? Oh, she loves him. Loves him so much. Where is he!?
-----------------------------------------------------------
Azriel cracks his neck, obviously not wanting to engage with the eldest son of the High Lord, who clearly would rather be anywhere else. Cassian is long gone, with the excuse of seeing Nesta, and now Azriel has been left to deal with Eris. This could not get any worse.
Until it does.
Y/N beams at him, tripping over her feet to get to him, stumbling as she slumps into his arms, snorting and giggling. He freezes. Eris chokes on a laugh. Her hands reach up to grab his face and tug at his hair.
“Y/N?” he murmurs, taken slightly off-guard by her strange behaviours.
“Azzy!” she squeals, laughing and kissing his cheek. Eris cocks a brow. “Looks like your little Y/N’s had too much to drink.” His words echo around Azriel’s head. No, that can’t be. Y/N doesn’t like drinking. And why would she get drunk here of all places? And why-
His heart sinks. Her pupils are dilated. Her body is trembling. Her skin is turning clammy.
This isn’t alcohol. It’s poison.
His eyes go wide as he pulls her form into his arms. “Y/N?” he mumbles, a little firmer now. “Y/N, what’s going on?”
“Nothing, silly!” she squeals. Eris laughs again, and Azriel’s head whips towards him. “What the fuck did you do to her!?” The eldest son’s eyes widen at his harsh, almost growling tone.
“Me? I’ve done nothing. She’s just drunk, shadowsinger.” He sneers at him down his pointy nose. Azriel clutches Y/N closer, ignoring all of her babbles as she squishes his cheeks and tugs his dark locks like a child.
“I love you!” she squeals. “I love you sooooo much. So much. I wish we were mates.” she slurs. Azriel takes a shaky breath at her words, and Eris gestures to her flailing form. “See? Drunk.”
“She’s not- she’s not drunk, she’s- fuck, where’s Rhys?” His tone is desperate as he searches for the High Lord. Y/N’s knees start to buckle, but he wraps her arms around her thighs. “Stay with me, sweetheart, you’re gonna be okay.” He manages to catch the attention of Rhys, whose eyes go wide at the sight of Y/N’s slumped form, and he rushes to them. “What-”
“She’s been poisoned.” Azriel chokes out, panic surging in his veins as he hugs his girl as tightly as he can to his chest. “We- we need to get her out.” Rhys takes a breath, and seems to send a message to Feyre, because she starts to round everyone up. “She’ll be okay, Az, just calm down-”
“I’m not going to calm down! She could die!” He snaps. Rhys backs off at the protective gaze in his brother’s eyes. “Get her back to the Night Court, I’ll sort out here.” Azriel hooks one arm under her knees and the other on her back as he closes his eyes, winnowing back to Velaris.
She squirms, shoving herself onto the cold floor of the Moonstone Palace, and she pukes, gasping and gagging. He shushes her gently, his shadows swirling around her and stroking her hair back as she retches. “It’s okay, you’re okay. Get it all out.”
As she vomits, his mind can’t help but flick back to what she said in the Autumn Court. ‘I love you!’ ‘I wish we were mates.’ His heart flutters at the recollection, but he silently growls at it to shut up. She’s been poisoned. Her head isn’t right. She was probably just saying words for the fun of it. She doesn’t mean it. She doesn’t mean it.
But still…
No, heart, stop it.
He pulls her up against his chest when she’s finished, gently rubbing her back. She sobs, slurring unintelligible words. He kisses her sweaty temple and carefully carries her up to her room, murmuring sweet nothings to keep her calm, but her body thrashes. Her eyes are rolling back. His hands are shaking.
He just about manages to get her writhing form onto the bed when Rhys arrives, Madja hot on his trails. “She’s been poisoned?” she asks. Y/N screams in response. Rhys winces at the noise, but the expression worsens at the fury on Azriel’s face.
“Azriel-”
“Go on.” He growls. “Give me one good reason I shouldn’t storm back in there and kill them all.”
“Because first of all, that’ll be a lot of paperwork for me, and second of all, I don’t think Y/N wants you to leave.”
Rhys is, frustratingly, right. Y/N has taken it upon herself to latch onto Azriel’s arm, clutching him and mumbling profusely, cheek squished against his bicep. He sighs, and gently pats her hair, shooting a glare to the High Lord of Night in the process.
He sits with her the entire time Madja treats her, his fingers tightly intertwined with hers. The healer concludes that she’ll be okay, but not without side-effects. She says he was clever to get her home so quickly. It wasn’t out of intelligence, it was out of fear.
She gives Y/N a sleeping draught, just so her aching body can get some rest, and then she leaves. Azriel stares at his best friend’s face, and figures he should do the same. He presses a soft kiss to her forehead, smiles at her fluttering eyes, and moves to leave.
Standing in the doorway, however, his eyes flit back to hers, the hazel of his irises connecting with her soft hues.
And then he feels it.
Like a string pulled taut, it snaps within his chest, flooding his veins with the pure bliss of finally having something to protect, to care for, to love. It roars throughout his body, his heart burning with the golden flames of the bond.
Mate.

In Faerie, it was uncommon for a half fae, half human being to be a princess in the court. Your father — the King of one of the many lands — wed a human woman, causing you to become the land’s princess. Of course many of the court thought that you were lesser than them; For such a creation should never hold that high of a status.
Ever since you were younger, you often attended lessons with the High King’s youngest child. At first, you sought out to befriend him and his group of friends. But you soon found out that they loathed you. Because how could a halfling ever be a worthy princess?
So you gave up trying to befriend them. You let the group taunt you for not being full fae, but what was the worst thing they could do? You still were a daughter of a very powerful king. The very king that was the closest with the High King himself.
You and your family were constantly invited to all their gatherings, and this one wasn’t an exception. It was the High King’s birthday, which meant all of Faerie was invited to Elfhame palace to celebrate such a day. The only issue with that meant your father and mother urged you to talk to Cardan and his group.
“Mother, they don’t like me.” You wring your hands together, fidgeting with your silver jewelry.
She clicked her tongue, “Nonsense. Prince Balekin spoke of how much Cardan talks about you when he comes home from your lessons.”
“Wait what?” Your eyes widen at her in disbelief. “Mother, I’m sure they’re words of hate.”
“Is it because you don’t like your dress? Are you afraid they’ll hate it?” She tugged you to stand in front of herself. “You look gorgeous, angel.”
You purse your lips at her compliment. You truly loved the dress. It was a beautiful sage color that complimented your skin tone completely, and the corset really did wonders. There were gorgeous lace details of butterflies that were a shade darker, with a slit running down one side of the dress. It was beautiful, but you feared that it was much too modern for Faerie, causing your thoughts to wander to how Cardan’s friends would insult it.
“No, I love the dress, mother.” You give her a tight lipped smile, squeeze her hands. “If you truly wish for me to find Cardan, I’ll go and be friendly so you and father can enjoy your time here.”
“Thank you.” She pressed a kiss to your forehead and a real smile etched its way onto your face.
“Be safe, alright?” Your father squeezed your shoulder before leaning down to whisper words your mother couldn’t hear. “If trouble comes, you know what I’ve taught you. You have your dagger?”
Your lips twitch in excitement, “Of course.”
“Then you’re all set then, kiddo.” He gave you one last look before resting an arm around your mother’s waist. “I’ll come find you when it’s time for us to depart.”
You nod before taking a small bow. You watched them leave and make their way to the throne, immediately engaging with the High King and Queen. They seemed happy, which made you glad that they accepted your mother as their own. Shaking your head, you took a deep breath and blew out the air in one go. Carefully, you made your way over to Cardan. Luckily, he was on his own for once.
“Cardan.” You nod in his direction, watching his dark eyes with flecks of gold suddenly gazing into yours. Without fail, his eyes roam over your body, tail whipping behind himself after gaining someone’s attention.
“Princess! Don’t you look absolutely captivating tonight.” He slurred, red wine dripping out of his glass. “Welcome to my humble abode.”
You raised a brow at the prince. From what you could recall, he didn’t live inside the palace walls. And there wasn’t a chance he could lie either. “You don’t live here.”
“I used to.” He tipped his glass up to his wine stained lips, taking in the drink whilst taking in the sight of you.
“Where are your—“ You use your hand to gesture in the air as you grab your own glass of wine from a server passing buy. Unsure of how to word your question, you sip on the wine, immediately hit by its strength. “Where are your friends, I should say.”
“Off to bother some mortal or do something stupid.” He smiles in your direction as you down your drink and reach for another. “What’s upsetting you, princess?”
“Nothing.” You tilt your head toward him, eyes flicking down from his strange stare to his stained lips. “Just want time to move faster.”
“How drunk do you want to get?” He leans closer to you, fingers itching to pull you into him.
You place a hand to his mouth and push him further away from yourself. He hums as he traces his finger over his empty wine glass.
“How many glasses have you had, Cardan?” You tip back your third drink, missing his smirk while he watches.
“Enough.”
“Enough to forget?” You turn toward the table and grab the strongest drink, carefully downing the drink.
His shadow towers over you as his breath tickles your neck, “Forget what exactly, love?”

“I hate you.” You say against Cardan’s lips, arms loosely hanging around his neck. “I hate you so much.”
He continues to push you backwards as he slams the door behind him, hands finding their place around your waist. “Feelings mutual, princess.”
Letting your hand thread through his hair, you pull him in for a more heated kiss, tugging ever so slightly at his roots. Cardan groans against your lips, pulling your body closer to his.
“This is such a stupid idea.” You unwillingly part as he drops you down on a bed — hopefully one that used to be his. You let out a small gasp as he litters soft kisses on your throat and down to your exposed collar bone. Your hands find his shoulders, pulling him impossibly closer. “Cardan—“
“Yes, love?” He slowly makes his way back up to your lips, pressing short kisses as you try to make sense of the situation. He stops attacking you with his lips, staring and waiting for you to continue.
You shake your head, eyes glassy with drunkenness as you meet his gaze. “Kiss me.”
“You’re too perfect for me.” He groans again, tasting the red wine from your lips as he kisses you harder. “God, I hate you.” Cardan mumbles as he lets his hands wander over your body, refraining from the more private areas at the moment.
Cardan allows you to wander over his own body, feeling you fidget with the hem of his shirt. Letting your hands slip underneath his shirt, you let out a small sigh before flipping the both of you over. You quickly toss your dagger onto the floor before meeting his lips again, the kiss heightening all your profound feelings.
As minutes turned into an hour more, you both fell into a pit of no return. The shared kisses were intensified, and without either party having a clear mind or being sober, neither could stop the motions that lulled them both to sleep very late into night.
It wasn’t until early afternoon that the pair awoke to the sounds of pounding at the door and a splitting headache.
“Your highness, your father is looking for you.” The voice called from outside the wooden doors, causing you to groan and bury your head into the warmth emitting from your bed.
A beat passed before the pounding occurred once more.
“Your highness—!”
“In a minute!” Cardan shouted, eyes shut from the dizziness and hangover. “For fucks sake…”
Your eyes widen at the voice, head rushing up before falling back down at the impact of a jaw. “Shit, that hurt.” You mutter, wincing when you felt the hangover hit you. Slowly, you remove yourself from Cardan’s arm, slightly frowning when you saw him rubbing his jaw. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to slam into you…”
“I think that’s the least of our concerns.” He grumbled, glaring at the door again.
He pushed himself up from the bed, eyes raking over your appearance. He smirked over at you before leaning against the headboard. You crease your brows before looking down and realizing whose clothes you were in — crossing your arms over the loose shirt.
“Princess, I think your father will be a little disappointed in you.”
“Why is that?” You roll your eyes at him, keeping one arm over Cardan’s shirt while running your free hand through your hair.
Your bored gaze meet his amused one, watching him tilt his head. You look away as you weren’t necessarily hiding the fact that you were eyeing his bare chest either.
He pulled you into his chest, despite your halfhearted protests. “Because you have hickeys all over your skin.” Cardan presses a kiss to your cheek, causing your breath to hitch.
All the memories from last name came rushing in, warmth filling your body at the thoughts. Your eyes flit to your dress and dagger scattered across his floor, still thinking of the punishment to come.
However, you did not regret him.
“I don’t think we drank enough last night.” You twist in his arms, lips barely touching his.
“I don’t think so.” He lands a soft kiss to your lips. “I still hate you, love.”
“Feelings mutual.” You straddle over his hips and rest your forehead on his, both your heads still pounding from last night’s activities.
