PART ONE | PART TWO
Cardan’s tail swished at his feet. From across the room, he watched as you danced with Jude. A smile tugged at his lips. His wife and his best friend. What luck he had been afforded for the two incredible women in his life to get along so well? He knew, of course, that you would. In your time at school, you often admonished Cardan for any cruel tricks he played on Jude. She didn’t deserve that treatment, you’d always say. Be better, because I know you can be. You were the only person he would allow to speak to him like that. After all, you were the only person who thought him above the part he played. If all of Elfhame thought him cruel, you saw him for he truly was. Jude, eventually, came to see that too—both your kindness and the mask Cardan wore.
You caught his eye and smiled. Cardan watched as you took Jude’s hand, gently urging her out of the swarm of dancing fae. She smiled appreciatively at you. It was difficult for humans to find their way out of these revels. If you were not watching out for her, Jude might have danced until she died.
“You didn’t have to stop,” Cardan said as you approached him. Jude slipped away to the refreshment table.
“I cannot stand to be apart from you. I’ve had enough of a fill of that for a lifetime,” you said. Cardan’s heart soared. Your arms wrapped around his waist, and your head came to rest against his chest. “Besides, I think Jude was beginning to tire.”
“I do not plan to let you stray from my side for a long time.” Cardan’s tail wrapped around you and pulled you closer. If Cardan could achieve it, he would mould you against him so that you never could leave again. “I am glad you and Jude are friends now. She has so few she feels she can trust.”
“As am I.” Your smile faltered for a moment. So quick that Cardan might not have noticed it if he hadn’t committed himself to memorizing every part of you. He reached up, thumb tugging at the corner of your lips so that the smile might remain in place. “May I confess something?”
“Anything.”
You took a breath. You did not speak immediately. Instead, you took the time to straighten the crown that rested against his brow. “I left because I thought Jude was the one you cared for. After you were crowned High King, you were seldom from her side. It broke my heart to think that I had lost your favor. I would step aside for your happiness, but I could stand by and watch it happen.”
Cardan’s tail wrapped tighter around you. You would not run again, but he couldn’t stop the fear from sinking deep into his veins. “I was scared that you would not like the crown I wore. Jude took a liking to tell me how ridiculous I was acting. Truthfully, I think she liked that too much because it was the one thing that we could always agree.”
“Why did you wait so long then?”
Cardan laughed. “I may have agreed with Jude that I was being ridiculous, but it did little to quell the fear that you would not want me.”
“Well, whatever she said to convince you to act, I am grateful. Even if it did send me running.” You pressed a soft kiss to his lips. Cardan smiled. “In some ways, I think we both needed it. Who knows how long we may have skirted around our feelings still.”
He combed your fingers through your hair and pulled you in for a searing kiss. He loved this. He loved being your husband. Cardan no longer had to pace the floors of the palace, wondering if he could confess to you his feelings. He no longer had to dream of what it would feel for you to be in his arms, for it was now his reality. And as you moaned against his mouth, Cardan decided he would commit every moment of his long life to bringing you as much pleasure as you have already brought him. It was his duty as your husband after all.
“Let us retire,” he said, parting from you long enough for a breath.
“It is our wedding celebration. People will talk if we leave too soon,” you said, but your voice was filled with enough lust that he knew you didn’t truly mean a single word.
“Let them talk, and let Jude run them through with her sword for disrespecting their Queen and King.”
You smiled up at him, and Cardan stole another kiss. “Whisk me away, my love.”
The entire walk up to your shared chambers, Cardan’s tail swished behind him in excitement.
Sex and nakedness are not regarded the same in Faerie as it is in the human lands. Yet, watching as Cardan undressed before you had you positively giddy. It had you even forgetting that you were supposed to undress, too, until your husband was reaching around you, skillfully undoing the laces of your dress with his nimble fingers.
“You are beautiful,” you whisper, running your hand down his chest to his stomach. “The most beautiful person I have ever seen.”
Cardan grinned. “And to think you tried to deprive yourself of such beauty,” he teased. He kissed your brow, dragged his lips down to your ear. His breath was warm as he whispered, “I should be quite upset, you know, that you tried to deprive me of your beauty.”
Wordlessly, you sank down to your knees. The wood was cool against your skin. A nice contrast to how warm your arousal was making you. Cardan watched you, his mouth falling open to release a shuddering breath as you took his cock in your hands. “Shall I repent, my husband?”
His throat bobbed as he swallowed. Any sign of his teasing had disappeared the moment you touched him. You wondered if he had always been so affected by you. You wondered how blind you must have been to miss it for all these years. “You may do to me as you please,” he breathed out.
Your tongue darted out, wetting your lips, before you took him into your mouth. As you looked up at your husband through your lashes, Cardan looked as though he might just fall apart under your touch. Pride settled in your veins. Neither you nor Cardan were strangers to pleasures of the flesh, but you were certain that no one could make him feel as you were now. You released him with a pop! and began to kiss down his length.
Cardan’s fingers found purchase in your hair. His grip tightened as you ran your tongue up the underside of his cock, taking time to flick over a rather prominent vein. But before you could take him fully in your mouth again, Cardan was pulling you away, gently nudging you back to your feet.
“Was that not to your liking, husband?” you asked, though you already knew the answer.
“I will not allow you to steal all the fun, wife,” he said. Cardan gathered you in his arms, carrying you the short distance to the bed and laid you down. He settled between your legs, which he had hiked over his shoulders. You reached down, brushing stray curls from his eyes. “It is my wedding night, too, after all.”
“Ah, yes, but what is that the humans say? Happy wife, happy life?”
Jude had been quite happy to share that one little line with you. Having grown up in Faerie, there was little she remembered from her time in the human lands. But she remembered that, and she shared it with you so that you could add it to your arsenal of things to make Cardan putty in your hands.
“Oh, I fully intend to make you happy,” Cardan declared before diving in.
Cardan ate your cunt as if he were a starved man. His tongue lapped at you, collecting your arousal as if it were the sweet nectar of an everapple. Just as he had you, your hand found its own wound through his silky curls. But where he had pulled you away, you drew him in closer. You could feel his smirk when he took your sensitive bud between his lips.
You breathed out his name, chanted it as if it were the most precious oath. Recited it as though it were your vows to him. A cord deep in your stomach began to tighten, tauter and tauter until it finally snapped. Your chants became a scream.
Your husband emerged from your trembling thighs with a triumphant smile. He crawled up your body until he was draped over you like a blanket. Safe and secure within his arms. Cardan’s forehead rest against yours. His breath tickled your face, but you found delight in the sensation. His every breath was yours, and so yours were his.
“I feel as though I am in debt to you,” you teased. “How can you let me finish, but not allow me the same pleasure?”
Cardan smiled. His tail dipped between your bodies, wrapped itself around your leg. “Your debt shall be paid soon enough,” he swore.
You barely processed Cardan pressing his cock into you until the gasp escaped your lips. It had been a long while since you laid with anyone. You had forgotten how delicious that stretch felt. Acting of their own accord, your legs locked around his hips, keeping his thrusts shallow as he began to move. You pulled Cardan in for another kiss and did not let him pull away.
His moans melted into your own. “I love you,” he chanted. His fingers intertwined with your own. “I adore you. I am yours to command.”
“Mm, don’t stop,” you said. And as though he were yours to command, he did as told, his thrusts beginning to grow sloppy. “I love you.”
Cardan gasped, and you felt him finish. He continued to thrust into you, one hand leaving yours to press against the still sensitive bud. He rolled it between his fingers, urging that taught cord to snap again. As though you were his to command, it did, and the tidal wave of ecstasy washed over your once more.
“I love you!” you shouted, because nothing better encapsulated this feeling than those three simple words.
Your husband came to rest against your chest, his ear pressed against the spot above your heart. He nipped at the skin of your breast until you scratched your nails against his scalp. His tail had unwound itself from your thigh, taking to swish softly in the air above you.
“I am glad I came home to you,” you said. “I am glad you did not let me stay away.”
Cardan lifted his head, a sleepy smile tugged at his lips. “I would run after you every day if it meant I got to have you in my arms for even a moment.”
“I shall never run again,” you swore.
“But then whom shall I chase through the palace?”
“I may run then,” you conceded.
Content, Cardan rested against your chest once more. His breaths soon turned shallow, and a quiet snore echoed through the room. You followed soon after, because there was nothing in this life you would do without your husband at your side.

Is this Love?
A/N: So I wanted to do an an enemies to lovers and I thought: What better character to start with then Cardan Greenbriar. I really hope this is okay I know that @aroseinvelaris love the cruel prince so this is for you love <3
Summary: The king is the most infuriating person alive. But every time he looks at you, you feel your skin burn and your heart skips a beat. You hate the way he makes you feel alive, but you especially hate his obnoxiousness and horrible addiction to partying. However, after a night of drinking and reveling, what will you do when the King of Elfhame seeks you out?
Request: N/A
Pairing: Cardan Greenbriar x noble faerie!reader
Warnings: !!!Disclaimer!!!This does not follow the actual storyline, I’m kinda just winging it since it’s been some time since I’ve read the books and also I wanna get comfortable with the character first!!! Enemies to lovers, a bit toxic, intoxication, physical contact, being held against ones will
~*~*~*~*~
You wanted to kill him. “What. Did. You. Say.” You asked again, glaring at the King you were supposed to respect. You curled your fingers into a fist as they dug crescents into your palms. The king lazily smirked at your frustration, the papers you had given him falling out of his hand onto the floor.
“Your idea is dismal at best. It lacks any intellectual reasoning at it is also by far one of the worst that your family has ever presented me. You may be the representing noble, but honestly this presentation is just sad and pathetic,” You gaped, rolling your eyes as you snatched the papers from the ground, storming out of the room. That asshole. How dare he!? How dare he insult your ideas like that, knowing that you and your father had worked hard on those proposals together. How dare he insult your intelligence when he can barely even go a day without becoming intoxicated and doing something stupid at those parties he holds!
Fury bubbled within you as you stormed to your home. Waving your hands in the air as you ranted and raved about the King, you mumbled strings of curses and insults to yourself. That- That arsehole. That empty headed, intoxicated, narcissistic, egoistic, think-skulled arsehole. Start praying that he becomes sober because one more word out of that mouth will get him killed, either by your hands or some pissed-off royal from another far away powerful land.
Slamming the papers onto the table of your office, you sighed heavily, collapsing onto the armchair behind you. Being one of Elfhame's few females that is a representing noble for her family was far from easy. Especially when that lazy dumbass king that sat on his ass and drank all day already had prejudices against you since you were both children. You might have to reconsider killing him because, well, why not? Cardan Greenbriar is one of the most incompetent people in the entire kingdom and he still dared to insult YOUR intelligence. A scholar, the same lady who literally saved him from being murdered at the coronation. The absolute audacity!
You growled impatiently as you ran your hands through your hair. Sure, you might not be the oldest noble, but he hadn't even spared you a thought before tossing your ideas down the drain. What was so terrible about giving free education to poorer families in Elfhame? Was he so narrow-minded, so spoiled, so entitled, that he didn't realise that there are still fae out there suffering!?
"I guess it's back to the drawing board huh!?" You whipped your head around to your father. He smiled at you, crows feet appearing at the corners of his eyes, his hair white, his skin sunken and wrinkled. Human. Your father was human. Your mother had been the fae one, though she died at birth. However, you never felt her absence as your father had never let you doubt for one moment that you were absolutely loved. You softened at the sight of your father. He was old, weak. Definitely not things that were valued by the fae. And if it hadn’t been for your fae heritage and your father’s deep-rooted connections, you could be living a very different life.
“I’ll worry about that, you just rest, Pa,” Prompting your father gently to go to bed. He nodded, pride shining in his eyes, as he walked out humming a simple tune. Your heart broke at the thought of living a life after he dies, but it was inevitable. You had to figure this out on your own. Lest, Mr. I-hate-everything, would be breathing down your neck.
Sighing, you turned to your desk, riddled with stacks if loose papers and books. You had to figure something out, present something, you promised yourself. You would not let the king trample your idea of a better Elfhame.
~*~*~*~*~
You were…..so tired. Well that was one way to put it. How did some humans do this their whole lives? You had pulled an all-nighter to rewrite the reports that the King wanted and you couldn’t believe how truly exhausted you were. When you heard from your father that some humans do this from the time they are in middle school, you wanted to faint. You could barely hold it together as you changed clothes into a formal gown.
Regardless, it was done. Thankfully, you were finally done with the piles of work that you had delayed for so long. If you were lucky, the King would give you a day off. Trudging to the Palace of Elfhame, you let out a sigh as you smoothed down your skirts once more. Approaching the doors, you flinched when you heard laughter and the cacophony of a party from the inside.
“When will someone finally have a vendetta against me and murder me in my sleep,” You mumbled as you pushed open the doors, faltering slightly as you noticed the insane amount of people dancing and laughing under the influence. At the centre of it all, Cardan lazed on his throne, grinning as he held a goblet of what you guessed was a mixture of his favourite alcohols.
You were about to turn around and leave, however Cardan spotted you and promptly called out your name above the loud and jarring music. Realising that he was probably drunk and wouldn’t remember this anyways, you continued walking, huffing to yourself when you heard footsteps following you. Cardan’s footsteps.
“Wait! Would you listen to your King and just wait!?” You ignored him, despite your efforts, he still caught up to you, stepping in front of you to block your path. He reeked of alcohol, and….was that substances?
“Are you high!? And drunk!? It’s not even a weekend Cardan!” You yelled in his face. If he was both of those things he wouldn’t remember this anyways, so might as well get it off your chest. “You are so infuriating, you are not responsible, you barely make right judgments without your advisors, you are always a little bit drunk. You are not fit to be King. Let’s not even mention the fact that you always look down on me for being half-human! I hope yo-,” You couldn’t finish your sentence as you kept trying to shove Cardan, because as you tried to continue screaming at him, he caught your wrist and pulled you in roughly, meeting your with a kiss.
~*~*~*~*~
A/N: I don’t know about this….but eh. No harm no foul in trying. Honestly, I don’t think this is the worst fic I have ever written. So- I hope you had fun reading this. I had a little fun writing this. See you next time <3
(ALSO THANK YOU GUYS SO MUCH FOR 400 FOLLOWERS)

Comments and reblogs really appreciated 🥰
This wasn’t happening.
It couldn’t be. There was no way your father - who treated you better than any son he might have had - had agreed to this. Your body shook as a rage slowly spread its way through your veins. “You can’t be serious about this? Father, daddy, you know how I feel about them. About him. And now, what? I’m expected to marry him? Never. I won’t do it.”
Your father, who was currently seated at the head of the table sighed deeply, his shoulders slumped, his chin resting in the palm of his hand. “I’m afraid you don’t have a choice. Y/N, you know I love you dearly and if there were any other way I would take it, but there isn’t.”
“Ugh!,” you shout as you stand, pushing back the chair and storming over towards your father. “This isn’t fair. I always thought I’d have the opportunity to marry for love, not political gain.”
With a roll of her eyes, your mother finally spoke up. “Oh enough of this Y/N. You should count your blessings that the Greenbriar family has agreed to this union. You will be Queen one day. Ruling the entire kingdom of elfhame.”
“A title I do not want. I would quite happily live my days on a pig farm mucking up shit for a living.”
“Watch your language, you ungrateful little…”
“Enough!” Your father shouts as he stands abruptly, his gaze flickering between you and your mother. “You will marry Cardan. You will become Queen and you will fulfil your duty and give him an heir.”
“Fine.” You bark angrily through gritted teeth. But like hell I’m making this easy.
***
The following day you’d spent your time out in the training grounds, letting out some of that pent up anger from last night. You take a deep breath in and exhale as you swing your sword, feet moving in synchronisation as if you’d been doing this all your life.
There’s a shift in the air and you turn quickly, blade pointed to the neck of your intruder. “Nice to see you too, future Mrs Greenbrier.” Cardan jeers as he looms over you, lips curving into a smile and his eyes sparkling with mischief.
Your eyes trail over his form, taking in his tall stature and slightly disheveled hair. His features are accentuated by the outfit he's wearing. Black leather slacks that hug his thighs perfectly and allow his tail freedom to move, paired with a white shirt that cuts into a V exposing his chest. The black jacket he wears has flecks of silver running through its seams. His fingers - which are currently running along the length of your blade - are adorned with silver rings.
He’s quite handsome, you think as you finally meet his gaze. Not that you would ever acknowledge it publicly. You’d rather die first. “Don’t call me that,” you growl as you pull the blade away from his touch. “What are you doing here, anyway?”
Standing mere inches apart you can feel the heat of his gaze and sure enough, when you look up at him his eyes are roaming the length of your figure. “Believe me,” he says, his eyes finally meeting yours once again, “I’d rather be anywhere else, but unfortunately my brother thinks we should spend some quality time together. So, here I am. And now I’m leaving.”
With that he turns abruptly and leaves. You are standing watching as he retreats from the grounds and an unexpected anger takes root, urging you to run after him. “What?” You shout, stopping him in his tracks. He doesn’t turn to face you and so you move around him until you are face to face.
A devilish smirk edges its way onto his face, a single eyebrow quirked in amusement. “You must be hard of hearing, I said I’m leaving.”
“Yes I heard you just fine, what I meant was why?”
“Missing me already? I suppose I do have that effect on people, especially humans like you. Your kind seems to always be enamoured by me. It’s flattering really, but I have no time for your kind. I prefer my women of the Fae variety.”
Your nostrils flare and you stomp your foot as you grip the hilt of your sword. “My kind? The only reason you and your family of inbreds have anything is because of my kind. My father has helped you politically and financially and without him and his contributions you’d be nothing.”
Your breathing raggedly, trying to quell your anger and all he does is stand there towering over you. And then he laughs. He fucking laughs. “What are you laughing at?” He stops laughing then but the smile is still spread wide across his face as he begins to circle you. He watches you like a predator does his prey and a shiver runs down your spine as he stands behind you.
His breath is hot on the skin of your neck causing your skin to pimple. His tail wraps around your leg and he slides an arm along your hip and around your waist, pulling you back into him. He leans down to whisper in your ear. “Oh Y/N, I’m going to enjoy being married to you, even if I despise you. Now, look up and smile won’t you.”
His thumb grips your chin, lifting your head to face the window in your father's office. There, gazing down at you both is your father and Cardan's older brother Dain. Through gritted teeth you smile up at them hoping they will turn away.
They don’t. They continue to stare and so you decide to give them a show. Turning around in his arms, you don’t miss the look of shock on his face when you reach up on tip-toe and press your lips against his. God I hate this.
Cardan does nothing at first, too stunned to do anything but then, oh then, he slips his other arm around your waist and moves his lips in sync with yours and he kisses you like a man dying of thirst drinks water. Like you somehow hold all the answers to the questions in the world.
He’s really good at kissing. And you can feel a heat beginning to build and a moan slips out. His tongue runs along your bottom lip and you shudder. The taste of him on your lips is intoxicating. It’s too much.
Pulling away you leave the grounds and rush inside leaving Cardan flustered. You don’t notice but he touches his lips with his fingers as he stares after you.
Turning a corner you lean back against the wall trying to calm your breathing and racing heart. You touch your lips, dazed, the feel of his lips moving against them, his taste, lingers. What was that?
***
“I think this was a mistake,” your father says as he watches you and the Prince of elfhame squabbling. “Nonsense,” Dain mutters as he takes a sip of wine. “They will grow to love each other. If not, at least to tolerate one another at best. Besides, my baby brother needs a woman like Y/N, keep him in check.”
“If you say so.” Dain’s gaze is fixed on you both, a smile spreading as he sees you both kiss. He turns away then with a clap to your fathers shoulder. “See. Nothing to worry about.”
***
The following week you spent the majority of your time avoiding Cardan at all costs. He was a cruel prince and you needed to remember that. Not that his chest was firm beneath your touch, not that you liked the feel of his tail wrapping around your leg or that he tasted of wine and honey.
No. You were definitely not going to remember that.
You wandered into your home library - likely for the last time - and ran your fingers along the edge of the books. So many stories, so many happy memories. Most of course you’ve read at least ten times. “You do realise that we have a library at the palace? No need to look so miserable.”
The book you’d been holding drops out of your hands, startled by the appearance of your betrothed. His tail whips around him, catching the book before it hits the ground, carefully placing it back on the shelf. “What do you want now, Cardan?”
He smiles. That devilish smirk plastered across his face and it takes all your strength to look away. “Someone’s been avoiding me and I don’t like it. Not one bit.”
“Well, darling, you will have years to get used to my coldness. Unless perhaps you’ve decided to marry someone else? Jude perhaps?” The smile falters and is replaced with a wicked scowl. “Don’t. Mention. Her. Name,” he snarls as he stalks towards you, pushing you back against the bookshelf. The air shifts and an unspeakable tension rises as he cages you in with his arms.
His eyes bore into you and you gasp when you feel his hand grip your hip pulling you close. There is a heat in his gaze that has a wetness pooling in your panties and oh gods the feel of his hand on your hip and the smell of him is intoxicating. I think I could get used to this.
His eyes flicker to your mouth briefly and then his lips are on you. Your body is being pulled and then your right against the firmness of his chest. He groans into your mouth and you begin to lose yourself to him once again. What the fuck is happening?
You can feel his hardness against your thigh and that ache only intensifies. No. This can’t be happening. I can’t allow it. Suddenly you're pushing him off you and he stumbles back slightly. “How dare you. Do not touch me again. I despise you and I wish my father hadn’t agreed to this.”
“How dare I? You were very much into that kiss, little human. And you forget, it is I who despises you.” You both stand mere meters apart, chests heaving, sexual tension sizzling between you. Then you’re on him. Lips crashing together, tongues fighting for dominance. “Oh,” you gasp when he lifts you, his arms holding your thighs as he carries you towards the dais.
His mouth devours you. Kisses a path along your neck and across the tops of your breasts. You pull at his shirt, inching it off him when the door to the library swings open. “What are two doing?” Your mother asks as she takes in your disheveled appearances.
Cardan doesn’t move. His body is still very much pinning you down and you try to push him off but he doesn’t budge. “Leave.” He commands, his gaze still set firmly on you.
“How dare you tell me what to do in my own home.” His gaze is fierce as he turns to stare your mother down. “How dare you speak to your Prince like that.” He stands then, his lean frame towering over your mother as she begins to cower. “I should have you imprisoned, it would serve you right. Now leave. I won't ask again.”
She rushes out the door - no doubt on route to inform your father, and when you look up at Cardan he is standing beside you, hand reaching out towards you. “Here, let me help you up.” You rest your hand in his and he gently pulls you up, wrapping an arm around your waist as he holds you.
He stares down at you for a moment, his gaze intense and then without a word he removes his hand and leaves. Leaving you shocked and seriously frustrated. What game is he playing?
***
It’s strange looking at yourself in the mirror all done up for the ball. Your hair is curled dropping over your shoulders in ringlets. The light grey dress fits snuggly on top and flows at the waist. The lace detail travels down the sleeves and stretches to your fingers and you feel like a queen.
Tonight is your engagement ball. Most if not all the kingdom will be in attendance and you haven’t set eyes on your future husband since the incident in the library. Maybe he has changed his mind? The thought of marrying Cardan is less repulsive now than when your father first shared the news. As matter of fact, the thought of being his wife and maybe even queen, excites you.
“Y/N, we are leaving, the carriage is here,” your father shouts from the bottom of the stairs. With one last check in the mirror you take a deep breath and make your way downstairs and out towards the carriage. “You look beautiful, darling.”
“Thank you daddy,” you say with a slight hint of nerves in your tone. Your father clasps your hand in his. “No need to fret. He will think so too.” With a smile and a wink he turns his gaze outwards to the passing trees. Am I that obvious?
***
The room is full of people - some human, mostly Fae - and yet you still haven’t spotted the one person you’ve been looking for. “Well look at you playing dress up.” With a roll of your eyes you turn around to face a sneering Nicasia. “I’m not in the mood for…”
A hand slips around your waist startling you a little. Your eyes flicker to the figure beside you and there he is. Your future husband. Staring at you with eyes full of adoration as he takes you in. The warmth from his hand permeates your skin as his fingers squeeze you slightly. “What was it you were saying Nicasia? That my fiancé is playing dress up?”
“Oh no I….I was just….”
“You were just insulting my future wife. Do I have to remind you of your place?” She cowers under his intense stare and apologises quickly before rushing off into the crowd. His hand runs along the curve of your ass before resting on your lower back. Cardan turns to face you. “Shall we dance?” Words fail you as you take in a shaky breath so you simply nod your head.
The music and the noise from the crowd filters away as you take in your future husband. The outfit he’s wearing fits him snuggly and the colour brings out his eyes. He looks regal. Of course the crown on his head adds to that. He holds you close as you move around the room, all eyes on you. The Prince can move, you think to yourself.
His tail has wound its ways around your leg, the tuft of hair on its end tickling slightly. His eyes trail over your form and a devilish smirk plays across his face. “They are all jealous.”
“Yes yes, of me because I’m with you,” you say sarcastically with a roll of your eyes. “No. They are jealous of me.” He says it so matter of factly that you almost trip over yourself, his arm tightening around you. When the music stops you both just stand there staring at one another.
You release a shaky breath when he reaches out his hand, tucking a strand of hair behind your ear. His fingers brush gently against your skin and you shiver at the contact. “You look devastatingly beautiful tonight.”
“I…thank…” Then his lips are on yours and it’s soft at first. Two shy lovers embracing for the first time until he runs his tongue along your bottom lip and you have to control the moan that threatens to slip from your mouth. It’s hungry. It’s raw. It’s so full of passion and you both stay like that until your future brother-in-law clears his throat.
“Hmm, sorry,” you say as embarrassment creeps up your neck and settles on your cheeks. “We’re leaving,” Cardan says as he slips his hand in yours and pulls you along behind him out of the ballroom and into the hall. “Where are we going?”
“Somewhere we won’t be disturbed.”
***
His room is huge, not that you get to take much in before he pushes you back against the door, his hand grabbing hold of your leg and lifting it over his waist. His mouth is leaving a trail of wet kisses along the bare skin of your neck, travelling down to the tops of your breasts. Oh, you gasp when he bites the soft flesh, marking it, marking you.
You hear the click of the lock before his hands grab hold of your thighs and lift you towards his bed. “I don’t want to be interrupted this time,” he breathes out, his hands working the dress off your figure to lay in a heap on the floor. “You truly are beautiful.” His mouth is on yours again, devouring you and in this moment you want nothing more but to give him everything. Give him all of you.
He kisses down your body, pulling the buds of your nipples into his mouth, suckling and biting until they pebble from his touch. His mouth moves down over your stomach and straight to your aching cunt. Ooh! You moan as your back arches off the bed, hands finding purchase in his hair. He moves your legs over his shoulders and buries his tongue inside you. Fuck he knows what he’s doing. He alternates between licking and sucking and shoving his tongue inside you that you are a complete and utter mess on the bed below him. Writhing in pleasure. That heat begins to form and you can feel yourself getting closer to that edge and you shout his name as the pleasure from your orgasm consumes you.
“Cardan.”
His tongue licks around his lips as he moves above you completely. You reach up and kiss him, tasting yourself on his tongue. He pulls back quickly to shed his clothes before his body lays flush against yours. You can feel the tip of him nudging at your entrance but you push him onto his back. He looks up at you in awe as you lower yourself onto his thick length.
Oh! His hands grip your hips as you begin to move above him - hips rocking over him. Sitting up he pulls your nipple into his mouth as he grabs you tight, pushing you down onto him. His tail wraps around you as he fucks up into you.
“Oh Cardan I’m…I’m gonna..”
“That’s it my beautiful little human…come on my cock. Want to feel you soak me.” Fucking hate when he calls me that.
“Fuck oh fuck!”
You shudder in his arms as your cunt clenched around him - his trusts becoming erratic- sending him over the edge. “Where?” He groans into your breasts.
“Inside…please!”
“Ngh! Fuck…”
He comes hard coating your walls with a cry of your name. He brushes hair off your face and captures your lips in a soft kiss before laying back - pulling you with him. His soft cock slips out of you and you nestle into his side.
“That was amazing,” you breathe out as you run your fingers along his sculpted chest. “I aim to please.” You hit his chest playfully and he laughs before grabbing your chin gently, turning your lips towards him. The kiss is soft and you think - not for the first time - that you could live the rest of your life like this. “Oh, I almost forgot,” he says as he sits up and reaches over to something behind you. “This,” he says as he opens a small box, “is for you.”
You gasp at the sight of a beautiful ring sitting inside the velvet box. It’s copper looking with intricate designs twisting around the band in the shape of moons and stars and a beautiful diamond sits in the middle. “Cardan, it’s beautiful. I…”
“It just reminded me of you and I saw it I thought, this is your ring. Do you like it?”
“Cardan, I love it,” you say through tears as he slips the ring onto your finger. “I guess this is actually happening.”
“Oh it’s happening. And I’m going to despise you for the rest of our lives.” He kisses you again. “I despise you too.”
“Hmm,” he says with a wicked smile, his eyes slowly closing. He pulls you close, his arm and tail wrapping around you, then he drifts off to sleep. You stare at the ring now sitting on your finger and smile as you snuggle into him. “I love you,” you whisper into the night. He says nothing - you assumed he wouldn’t, being asleep - just squeezes you tight and then you let sleep consume you.

Thigh riding with pillow princess (any female you write for) Where the reader is tired and (character) is needy so Reader makes her work for it.
A/N kinktober day 7 (sorry it’s late again). This is Jude Duarte x reader.
You wouldn’t expect Jude, the High King’s Seneschal to be a sub, let alone a pillow princess. But here she is humping my thighs like a bitch in heat begging me to touch her.
“Please. Fuck please y/n. Touch me please.” She begs bringing a smirk to my face. She came to my room begging for me to fuck her but I was too tired after dealing with Cardan’s antics so I told her to get herself off on my leg.
“Aw, you want me to touch you baby? Want mommy to take care of you?” I tease, bringing my hand up and twirling a strand of her hair with my fingers. She nods frantically. “Words sweetheart.” I remind her.
“Please mommy. Want you to fuck me please!” Her movements are speeding up and her breathing’s becoming frantic. Her eyes are rolling into the back of her head.
“That feel good baby? My leg making you feel good?”
“Yeah. Fuck so good. Please can I cum? Wanna cum so bad.” I grip her chin with my thumb and index fingers and I lean forward to plant a soft kiss on her lips. I grin wide and look between her fucked out eyes and her almost drooling mouth.
“Cum baby.” I say and lock our lips in a passionate kiss, my tongue exploring her mouth as she moans against me. I feel my leg becoming wet with her slick as she cums on me. “Good girl.”
“Thank you mommy.” She mumbles almost incomprehensibly. She’s practically collapses on top of me, holding me tight.
“Mommy’s got you baby.” I whisper in her ear, stroking her back. “Such a good girl for me, did so well baby.” She whimpers, shuffling impossibly closer to me. “Got to get you cleaned up now ok?”
She nods but makes no move to get off me. I chuckle a little and move her around to a position so I can pick her up. I take her to the bathroom and clean us both up. She stays gripping tight on me which makes it hard but I make it work.
I bring her over to the bed and we lie down. She seems to have come back from her fucked out state now because she’s looking slightly annoyed and embarrassed all at once. I laugh seeing her pout. “Shut up.” She giggles.
“I didn’t say anything! Besides it’s not my fault you can’t get yourself off on your own.” She hides her face in her hands and leans into my chest. She moans and laughs. I laugh as well but it’s not long until we’re interrupted by her yawns. “Time to go to sleep I think love.” She nods.
“Yeah.” She shuffles in close to me and I wrap my arms around her. I know she’d never admit it but as she starts to doze off I see a small smile appear on her face.

The Cruel Prince Book Review
The Cruel Prince Book Review by Holly Black
I honestly have no idea of where to begin with this book. There’s so much to say, probably too much to even get on the page without alienating people. This book has a lot wrong with it, and yet, yet, it was a highly addicting, almost fervent read with an ending that left me trembling and wide-eyed. I guess there’s no other solution than to just jump right in. Holly Black is giving us a thumbs up so here we go.
Holly Black. I’m sure she’s a lovely person, helps old ladies cross the street and brings casseroles to her sick neighbors and everything, but she’s one of the few YA authors that have made it onto my X-list. While this may sound dangerous and elite-ooohhhh, an x-list, it’s really quite simple and judgmental on my part: I read a book I don’t like from an author and that author is banned.
It only takes one time.
That being said, I love books. If it wasn’t obvious with the whole reading and writing book reviews thing. It takes a gargantuan effort to get me to hate a book. Almost always I can find something good, a character I liked, a scene that was memorable, a charming line of dialogue. Almost always without exception do I finish a book. If, and only if all of these are missing, the author will make it onto my x-list and I’ll ditch the book midway through.
Holly Black was one of those authors up until this book. Honestly, I’m struggling with deciding if I should keep her on the list or not, but that’s neither here nor there. I only decided to pick up the book because of its position on the New York Times Bestseller’s List, because it deals with fairies, which I love (The Wicked Lovely series any one?), and because it’s been a few years and I decided to give Holly the benefit of the doubt. But enough about me, let’s get on to the story.
So, why do I hate it? And why do I hate that I kind of like it?
The biggest reason: Jude Duarte. Our protagonist, main character, and female heroine. Arguably. I don’t think I have ever read a YA novel centering around a main character with less empathy, connection, or conscious. She murders, fights her sister, fights her surrogate father, fights the other fairy teens, fights pretty much everyone actually and never seems to learn anything??
I was honestly baffled. She spent chapter after chapter making horrible decision after horrible decision and seemed to get rewarded for it at the end? She gets the boy (in a messed up very unhealthy kind of way), gets the power, and gets the recognition, but at what cost?
Maybe it’s because I’m a teacher, or maybe it’s simply because I’m a decent human being, but Jude is a monster. I cringed when my students asked me what the book was about because I didn't’ want them reading it. They learn nothing from it: no morals, experience, or difficulties. Jude just does what she wants when she wants and it’s awful (although you wouldn’t be able to tell from Holly’s expression in the picture below).
In a way, I think Jude is entirely how Holly Black planned her out to be. She mentions on almost every page how she’s broken, how something is wrong with her, and how she isn’t human, justifying all of her behavior on the murder of her parents and her traumatic backstory.
It’s horrendously disconcerting to read about a human being who is more of an abomination than a person. And she’s the only notable character in the book, you can’t get away from her if you tried. No one else has the same amount of attention, page count, or insight.
Outside of Jude, there are very few characters whom you empathize with or even like as a reader. There is one character that I liked throughout the whole novel and he’s still awful. The title of the book is named after him if that gives you any ideas. So with no empathetic or likable characters, what else could go wrong?
A lot actually. Quite a myriad things that are presented to the reader. There are several plot points that left me mystified and confused-who is Dain again? Why is he worse than Balekin? Or Orlaugh? Or Roiben? Black introduces you to so many political figures in such a short amount of time that it’s impossible to keep track of all of them without a chart and pictorial representation. Game of Thrones can pull it off with incredible storytelling and intricate meshing, but Holly Black can’t, and it gets frustrating not knowing what’s going on a lot of the time.
Another frustrating part is the world of Faerie as a whole. Holly almost expects her readers to know that riding toads is normal or what will happen to mortals when they make bargains, but most of this information is highly specialized and very uncommon public knowledge.
She also includes details that are completely ridiculous: I never needed to know what Jude does when she gets her period. Ever. It has no relevance to the story and it was more disturbing as a tidbit than a fascinating aspect of world building.
Lastly, the thing that bewildered me the most was Jude’s unflinching decision to stay in Faerie. It is a place that loathes her, wants her dead, and scorns her at every turn. It is a place that despises humans and everything they stand for (which also rankled. It stings to be be told how horrible and inferior you are as a human-which all of Holly’s readers are-at every turn of the page).
But Jude is adamant about staying in Faerie because it’s her home. Who in the f*** actually cares? I’d leave a home that tried to murder me every day, that was excruciatingly dangerous, and not all that great from what Holly has to say about it. So her decision to remain in Faerie over and over and over again even when she is given an out by her sister is truly insane. It’s lunacy that I cannot even comprehend and that bothers me (although it doesn’t seem to bother Holly. She looks like she sleeps soundly at night after all that grinning).
So. All that in mind, why was this an addicting read? Why did I finish it in a week? Why did I go to Holly Black’s book signing last Friday? The ending was very entertaining. The whole book was damn entertaining. I loathed Jude, but I wanted to see what happened to her. I hated Faerie and all the people in it, but I wanted to see how the political quagmire would unravel and unfold.
I care about none of the characters except for Cardan (begrudgingly-and only a little) and yet, the ending was this dark, twisted dystrophy of madness, bloodshed and scheming that I couldn’t help but be sucked into and spat out in the end leaving me wanting more.
Either this was exactly what Holly Black wanted, and greatly succeeded, or this was not at all what she was going for, and yet, resulted in anyway. I can’t make up my mind about it, but I suppose I don’t have to just yet seeing as books two and three of The Cruel Prince trilogy are in the works. I’ll bide my time in both agony and anticipation until then.
Recommendation: If you can stomach a vile protagonist, poor plot points, repugnant side characters, and confounding choices in order to experience a truly intriguing ending that promises more offbeat and gritty situations, then pick up The Cruel Prince and leave your regret behind (as I did before going to meet her and Susan Dennard).
Score: 7/10 (For now)

summary: and you didn't wanna hang around. she said it was just goodbye for now. he said he was gonna grow up, then he would come find you.
word count: 1,728
warnings?: dual povs, a little angst with a happy ending, not proofread
PART ONE | PART THREE
The local children were convinced you were a witch. Part of you wanted to tell them that you were worse than a witch—that you could turn them into animal of your choosing, that you could make them do things and think they liked it, that you could ruin their lives by virtue of existing. Perhaps that was the heartache talking, so you instead shouted “boo!” when you caught them staring for too long. You supposed, though, you fed into the rumors of your being a witch. You came into this town out of nowhere, lived far away from the rest of its people, and only interacted with them when you went into town for food or a new library book. No one knew who you were or where you came from. At first, you reveled in the solace.
Now, you were only painfully are of how lonely you were.
When you left Faerie, you went as far as you could from your former home. Traveled up to the mountains, found an abandoned cabin you could hole up in. There were few faeries in this area, mostly solitary fae that you would encounter while on walks in the woods, which had been the draw. Months later, you found yourself wishing you had set yourself up in one of the communities of fae who lived in the mortal lands. Would you be admitting defeat to leave the cabin now and join them?
It wasn’t all horrible in your little cabin. Being away from court and all of its expectations was nice. You didn’t have to worry about carefully mincing your words so as not to offend anyone. You weren’t dragged into dances you would rather avoid. And you certainly did have to let your heart break over and over again as Jude at Cardan’s side. No, instead, you could read and write poetry and tend to the little garden you had started. You could find your happiness, even if it was without the one person you truly wanted by your side.
You wondered how Cardan was doing. Had he even noticed you were gone? Did he care? He had seemed to miss seeing you when you danced with him on your last night in Faerie. But he had also not made any prior efforts to seek you out. Fae couldn’t lie, but they could manipulate. They could twist the truth to serve their interests. Few were better at doing so than Cardan.
“When I learned you left Faerie, this was not the sort of place I expected you to be.”
You stiffened as you rounded the corner. The basket you’d been using to carry the herbs you foraged nearly fell from your grip. You squared your shoulders, looked down your nose at the woman seated at your dining room table. “I did not come here under the expectation to be found.”
Jude considered the room. The dirty dishes in the sink, the wilted flowers in the center of the table, the open storybook at the chair askew in front of her. “So it seems. It was not easy to find you.”
“You should have taken that as a sign to leave me be,” you said. You crossed the dining room and went into the kitchen. Jude’s chair scratched against the floor as she followed you. You ignored her as you began to unload the herbs from your basket. “I left Faerie for a reason.”
Though you were avoiding looking at her, you knew Jude’s eyes did not leave you. If you didn’t know better, you might have thought Jude was fae herself. The predatory glint in her eyes, the way her fingers itched to grab at her sword. She was not still like fae, nor was she unnaturally beautiful like fae, but she carried herself in such a way that you could be convinced otherwise. By human standards, she would have been the most beautiful of all. It was easy to understand why Cardan would choose her. Gorgeous but lethal—the exact sort of woman he would pursue. First Nicasia, now Jude. It was just as easy to see that you did not fit into the picture.
“You ran in the middle of the night,” Jude said. You looked over your shoulder. Her brows were pinched together as she scrutinized you.
“Have you come here to chastise me for leaving without a goodbye?”
She shook her head. “I have come because you were invited to breakfast.”
It was hard not to laugh. Was that why she came all the way to mountains to find you? Because you didn’t come to breakfast? It was so ridiculous. Of all the reasons to seek you out, it was the silliest of them all. Your heart ached all the same, though. No one came because you were a friend. No one came because you were missed. Would Cardan have even known you were gone if he hadn’t extended the invitation the very evening you fled?
“If I have offended the King, then I extend my apologies.”
Jude lifted her chin. “Tell him yourself.”
Your jaw clenched and unclenched. No. You would not go to him. You would not drag yourself back to that palace and let yourself be reminded why you had to go. You refused to break your heart all over again. “I have no desire to return to Faerie.”
“You don’t have to.”
Cardan stood in your bedroom. It was different than your one in Faerie. The one there had been full of extravagant things—the finest things he could gift you. It was full of gold and pearl and opal, glittering as if it all needed to be housed in a vault. But this bedroom, it had been stitched together out of nothing. Threadbare blankets, smooshed pillows, books that looked like they would fall apart with one wrong look. Cardan listened to your conversation as your voice floated down the hall. Would you really choose all of this over being with him? Was he truly so terrible?
The floor creaked under his feet as he stepped out and walked down the hall. Cardan could only see the back of your head, but you still looked just as beautiful as he remembered. His fingers twitched at his side as he fought the urge to run up behind you, take you in his arms, and whisk you away to Faerie. When had you taken so much control over him? When had he given it to you so willingly? When had you decided you didn’t want it anymore?
“I believe I am owed an apology?”
You turned slowly on your heel. Your eyes narrowed, but Cardan did not miss the flash of surprise. Your tongue swiped over your teeth. Would it be wrong to take that tongue in his mouth? Did it matter if it was? “I apologize.”
“My, that was heartfelt.”
Your eyes fell to the tail that swished around Cardan’s legs. It was still unfamiliar for him to have it out, still hard to control it from revealing his base emotions. He tried to will it to stop, but it continued to wave around as his excitement of seeing you bubbled in his chest. “Would you prefer I fall to my knees and weep for your forgiveness? Kiss your feet until you are pleased?”
“Oh, there are few things that would please me more than you on your knees for me, but I would prefer to not have an audience for that.”
Your gaze flitted from Cardan to Jude, who was inspecting your collection of kitchen knives. Were you debating sending her away? He would enjoy that. He would like to get on his own knees and remind you why he cared for you so. He misliked the distance you were putting between him. Maybe if he begged prettily enough, you would forgive him for whatever cruel thing he did that sent you running.
“What are you doing here?”
“I don’t appreciate learning that you fled in the middle of the night after inviting you to breakfast. Is my company so awful that you would rather leave your home than spend a moment with me?”
A scoff escaped your lips. “I didn’t expect you to care.”
Cardan stared. Didn’t care…? He was so sure he had been clear with his intentions. He sent you gifts—he sent you a ring! The ring…Cardan reached over to his littlest finger and slipped it off. Ignoring your noise of protest, he closed the distance, grabbed your hand, and slipped the ring back on the finger it belonged. His heart slowed to a normal beat.
“Why would I give you this ring if I didn’t care?”
You stared at the ring. “You have gifted me many things.”
Jude stepped toward you. Your head snapped over to look at her, as if you had forgotten she was there. She tapped on the glittering gem on the ring’s center. “Allow me—Cardan is not good at professions of love, it seems. I told him of how humans would gift a ring as a promise of love. He wished to do that for you. Usually, there are confessions of how one wants to stay with their partner for all of their lives, but it seems he forgot that part.”
Cardan’s face burned as you looked back to him. “Is that true?” you asked.
“Do I need to get on my knees for you to believe it?” He ignored Jude’s remark that that, too, was part of the human tradition.
You straightened your spine. “I will not be a lover to the king.”
Of course you wouldn’t be. You deserved more than that. Cardan was willing to offer you more than that. All you had to do was give him the word. Without a thought, Cardan sank to his knees, captured your hands in his. “Then be my Queen.”
Your breath hitched.
“Come back to Faerie and rule by my side. Allow me to love you as I have tried for all these years. I missed you.” He lifted one of your hands to lips, then the other. “I begged Jude to help me find you and bring you home. I begged her to help me come here. Please, don’t let it all be for not.”
All you could manage was a single nod, and that was enough.

PART TWO | PART THREE
When she stood at his side, looked so…natural at his side, it was easy to find you comparing yourself to Jude Duarte. No one understood why Cardan made her his seneschal, not when they had seemed bitter enemies before the Blood Crown was perched atop his head. You didn’t understand, either. The most Cardan had confined in you was that Jude helped him get the crown. Everything else remained a mystery. You would pass gossiping fae, those who sought insight behind the High King’s actions, and not have a single clue what to say. You wished you could lie, if just to be able to say anything but cryptic excuses for why Cardan stopped confiding in you.
Once, you thought you might be the one standing at his side. Not as High Queen, of course—no one had ever dreamed that Cardan would sit on the throne. But he had been one of the few you would dare to call a friend. Before the crown was perched atop his head, you would’ve said he called you the same. Perhaps not in front of his other friends, or anyone else for that matter, but you used to be certain you meant something to him.
You weren’t sure why you were still here. The longer you stayed, the more your heart clenched in your chest. If you remained for just a moment longer, it would give out on you. From the corner of your eye, you could see Jude bend down to whisper something to Cardan. You didn’t feel in control of your hand as it snatched a goblet of wine. It was heavy in your hand, but it managed to ground you. To give you a reason to not collapse where you stood.
How had things changed so quickly? Just months ago, Cardan was sitting on your blanket during lessons, trying to see how many twigs he could stick in your hair before you would tell him to stop. You always tried to see how long it would take before he got bored of it. When did you become the one he grew bored of?
“Dance with me.”
You lifted the goblet up, your head tilting back, finishing your wine in a single go. You set it down on a table and stalked away. Cardan followed after you. You spared a glance at the throne, where Jude still stood. Exasperation was clear on her face. Whether it was directed at you or Cardan, you couldn’t say for certain. You knew enough of her skill with a sword, though, to stay away from her bad side.
“I am tired,” you said.
Cardan’s hand caught your wrist. Jaw clenching and unclenching, you were forced to remain at the ridiculous party. You should’ve stopped coming to them months ago, but these events were the only opportunity to catch a glimpse at your friend-turned-king.
“One dance,” he insisted.
“I would prefer to leave.”
His hand slipped to your wrist. Fingers intertwined. When you tried to pull away again, his grip tightened. Your eyes lifted to meet his. If you shut them, you could imagine all of your dreams were coming true. “I would prefer you in my arms.”
“You’re drunk.”
Cardan’s grip slackened enough for you to wrench your hand free again. “Would you deny your king?”
The nonanswer was answer enough. Fae cannot lie. Cardan cannot deny his inebriation. He cannot deny that the one reason he would talk to you now was because his senses were dulled. Cardan Greenbriar does not consider you a friend any longer, so why would he ever seek you out sober? You wished you were drunk, too. It would hurt less.
“Would my king force my hand?”
His tongue darted out, wetting his lips. The same lips a laugh fell from. You took a step back. He stepped toward you. “One dance,” he repeated.
By now, an audience had formed. You cared little for fae gossip, but if you tried to leave now, it would be impossible to escape those who wanted to know why you would deny the king. You held your hand out and let him take it. You ignored the way your heart stuttered as his thumb ran over your knuckles.
“One dance.”
The smile Cardan flashed you was enough to make your knees weak. For that, at least, you were grateful to lean against him as you danced. It was easy, then, to lose yourself to the music, to pretend that things were how they used to me. When Cardan was your friend, when you told each other everything. If you lost yourself enough, you could imagine a crown perched atop your head. Jude could still stand at Cardan’s side. She was a damned good seneschal. But you would be the one sitting on his other side.
Cardan spun you around the floor, a smile on his face. You pretended it was because he was happy to have you in his arms. “I only ever see you at these parties,” he said.
“To be a king is to have a busy life,” you said.
“I would make time for you.”
He would, but he hasn’t. Was he waiting for an invitation? Cardan never used to before. There were countless times you would awake to find him waiting for you at the foot of your bed. He never liked having to wait for you to ask for his attention. There was a time he freely gave it. Had the Blood Crown changed who he was? Did it force him to realize he could do better than you?
The song faded into another, and you slipped out of Cardan’s arms. His hands still chased after you, but you artfully dodged them. A lump formed in your throat that you were quick to swallow. Months ago, you would have dreamed about a moment like this. Now, it felt like Cardan was using as a placeholder. As a symbol for someone he would prefer to dance but would never give him the time of day.
You looked at the throne again. Jude watched Cardan. Her face was unreadable. It was no secret that fae looked down upon humans. You never fancied yourself that sort of person. Certainly not when it came to Jude Duarte. It took a special sort of person, fae or not, to capture the interest of a prince. If there was anyone who deserved it, it was her. If she was the one that Cardan wanted at his side, you would not stand in the way.
“It was nice to see you again,” you said, because you knew you would not see him after tonight.
“Have breakfast with me tomorrow. I’ll have the cooks make your favorites.”
You could not tell a lie, so you only offered a smile. “Sleep well, Cardan.”
Before he could say anything more, say anything that might delude you into staying, you turned and left. Not a single person stopped you along the way. Not a single one cared whether you stayed or left—least of all the one person you wished to beg for you.
By the time the sun rose again, you had left Elfhame.
Cardan Greenbriar drummed his fingers against the wood table. He had invited you to breakfast, hadn’t he? Wracking his still wine-addled brain, he tried to recall the conversation with you. Yes, he certainly said breakfast. Or had it been lunch? Cardan spared a glance out the window. The sun was nearly at its peak. Had he asked you to breakfast or lunch? Had he asked you anything at all?
At the sound of footsteps entering the room, Cardan jumped to his feet. When it turned out to only be Jude, he flopped back into his seat. He propped his elbow on the table, pressed his cheek into his fist.
“I didn’t realize my presence was so disappointing,” Jude said. Her eyes swept across the table, at the two place settings and the untouched food. The one thing that had moved was Cardan’s goblet, which had been refilled minutes earlier. “She didn’t come.”
Cardan gestured at the empty seat across from him.
“Are you certain you asked her?”
He nodded.
“And she said yes?”
Cardan began to say an exasperated yes, that he wasn’t an idiot, but as he replayed the events from the night before, he wasn’t so sure. “I asked her to breakfast,” he said, because he was certain of that. Jude arched a brow. “…and she told me to sleep well.”
Jude ran a hand over her face. “I knew you were hopeless, but I didn’t imagine you were a lost cause. Really, how did you manage to be with anyone?”
“I was a prince. They just fell into my lap.”
“Sometimes I wish you weren’t fae, because then I could believe that was a lie,” Jude said. She looked over at the empty seat. The seat that should have been filled by you. “I’m going to send the Ghost to see where she is. Perhaps she was too drunk last night to remember you invited her, or maybe her days are mixed up.”
Cardan frowned at the untouched food. “Maybe she realized she could do better than me.”
Jude reached for his shoulder and gave it a squeeze. Cardan lifted his cheek from his fist and pressed it against her hand. If he shut his eyes, he could pretend it was you offering him comfort. “Whatever her reason, we’ll bring her here. We’ll figure things out.”
“I don’t know what I’ll do if I lose her,” Cardan admitted.
“We won’t let it come to that. I won’t let it come to that.”
An hour later, the Ghost returned. The words still echoed in his head. She’s gone. She’s gone. She’s gone. He had gone to your home and found it empty. Everything important to you had been packed and taken away. The Ghost lied to him, of course. Well, perhaps it wasn’t a lie, since the Ghost didn’t know its importance. But you left one thing behind.
Cardan stood in your bedroom, staring at your vanity. It had been cleared of your favorite jewelry and other pretty things you adorned yourself with. It was empty, except for the ring that lay on its marble top.
Jude once told him, when he admitted your feelings for you, about how some humans would gift their beloved a ring as promise of their love. One ring as a promise of monogamy, another as a promise of marriage, and a final ring as a promise of eternal love. Cardan had taken great care in selecting a ring for you, bearing in mind your affinity toward certain metals and specific cuts of stone. He thought it was perfect. When he presented it to you, after he had been crowned High King, he told you he picked it especially for you. You smiled and slipped it on your finger, said it was perfect.
If it was so perfect, why did you leave it behind to collect dust?
Cardan picked up the ring. A part of him wanted to fling it across the room. If you were rejecting his love, then that was the least the ring deserved. He wanted the stone to shatter and the metal to warp. He wanted to reduce it to dust. He offered you his love, and you left it, and him, behind. But Cardan couldn’t find it in him to throw you away.
He slipped the ring onto his littlest finger. He was going to find you. He was going to find you, and drag you back to Elfhame and put that ring back on your finger where it belonged. You might have left him behind, but he wouldn’t let you stay away.
By the time the sun set, he had given orders to bring you home.
