Was reading a collection of folk tales today. Odd text all around, because it's clearly made by and for academic enthusiasts who have little interest in doing any literary polishing on the translation. Like they were just going, "look, you get the point. this is just an appendix to the original text up at the front of the book anyway. don't think this translation has enough creative flair? learn Mongolian like the rest of us and read the original."

Any type of graphic design was apparently also considered unnecessary frippery. It was clearly just composed on a typewriter then photocopied. There are even pages where words the typist missed are inserted between lines, and at least one spot where you can tell white-out was applied on the original.

It's very charming. This is a genre of material culture we just don't get anymore in the age of digital design. Like a scholarly zine.

Anyway, the reason I'm telling you all this is because I wanted context before sharing this particular gem in the middle of a paragraph:

...best I can think, from how you captioned it, is that it might be a play on "parrot" and "Perry"? But also the combination of "those particular eyes" and "that particular beak" leads to a facial expression that's amusing in its own right.
