The year was 1982 . . . this was the PCT monument at the Canadian border. Lots of cotton represented in the clothing choices. This cast of characters from left to right - Rees Hughes, Amy Uyeki, Howard Shapiro, and Steve Gustaveson.
In 1988, a more elaborate monument was installed. This classic photo does an excellent job of capturing the border scar.
Tumblr media
The monument has been significantly upgraded (as have the clothes) since. In 2018 the North 350 Blades retained the 1988 design but built and installed a new version.

The Canadian Purge
America decides to have one night a year dedicated to lawlessness. The rest of the world, however, doesn't really notice. Canada hardens its borders for 24 hours, but everyone not on the border just sort of lives their lives without focusing on the chaos going on in the U.S.

Canada is a closed country. Not even the British (the place that owned us) can just show up and be let in. Your country is free to close its borders if it wants to. Canada did this because of the massive amounts of human trafficking that happened through us. Oddly enough countries can make whatever laws and policies it wants.
tourism entry agreements for many countries are completely unbalanced and unfair. did you know that people with a canadian passport can go to malaysia without applying for a visa / obtain an automatic tourism visa upon arrival, but if you have a malaysian passport you have to apply in advance for a tourism visa to go to canada? sometimes months in advance? any canadian can just show up to malaysia unannounced and they'll be let in, but my malaysian family has to beg the canadian gov for permission in advance (and get DENIED) just to come see me for a couple weeks. this is what it's like for most western passport holders in general, just because you are allowed free entry to the global south does not mean people in the global south are allowed free entry to the global north.

Quebec Premier François Legault wants Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to appease Donald Trump by tightening border security and clamping down on the illegal drug trade in response to the president-elect's threat of imposing 25 per cent tariffs on Canadian and Mexican imports. Legault held a news conference in Quebec City Tuesday afternoon, telling reporters tariffs of 10 per cent, as Trump had previously threatened during his campaign, or 25 per cent, as he threatened Monday, would have disastrous effects on Quebec's economy. "Twenty-five per cent tariffs would mean tens of thousands of lost jobs for Quebec and for Canada so we have to take it very, very seriously," Legault said.

Question for Americans who genuinely will not be voting or are choosing to vote third party, what do you think will happen to you if the Republicans win? You cannot realistically fight for others if you yourself are in a bad situation. Genuinely, what do you think will happen when protections for marginalized people are rolled back?
Do you think you will actually be able to protest anything, let alone stuff not happening on US soil like the war in Gaza? We already see heavily armed police at protests and it's just been getting worse. I'm struggling to find the logic in not voting for the only viable option that won't kill you. I'm aware it's maintaining a shitty status quo but that's better than the alternative, isn't it?

i love From because they'll obsess over where the wires go and why the phones and radios don't work properly, but none of them mention the biggest red flag that this is Someone Doing This To Them which is that every person in town was transported there from somewhere in the contiguous United States
